God of War: Ragnarok - A Skeptical Review

- [AVOID COMMENTS - SPOILER RISK]
God of War: Ragnarok is a game that I was highly skeptical towards at first. Mostly, this was because it's been one of the most anticipated games of the last few years, and often that can cloud one's judgement. That meant that when Playstation sent me a code for GoWR I decided to engage with it critically and carefully. In this review I'll explain my findings and will do so with as few spoilers as possible. This game is tremendous and is certainly a front-runner for GOTY. Buckle up, this is a game you don't want to miss.

My favorite part of Ragnarok is when Odin asks a dying Kratos “how about some Gwent?”
A Gwent joke on UA-cam? A surprise to be sure, but a welcome one
@@Chadius_Thundercock it’s an older meme sir, but it checks out. I was about to share it.
No spoilers
@@TheRoleplayer40k I got a bad feelin about this meme.
I love when the Kool-aid man from family guy busts through the wall of Kratos house😂 Best cameo EVER! Lol shit was hilarious bro. I love this game.
The part where Kratos told Odin "I am the vengeance, I am the night, I am BATMAN!" really sent shivers down my spine. Simply incredible moment.
Damn if it was actually a Batman game instead i would probably buy a PS5 lol
Spoiler!
I thought Kratos said "It's the man with no fear, batman is here!"
bruh that shit is so corny lmao
I wish this actually happened, it would have made this game an easy 10/10 goty
That part where Kratos thanked the bus driver with tears in his eyes and proceeded to jump off the battle bus was truly one of the most impactful moments in gaming.
LMAO kratos is literally in fortnite as well which makes this 10x funnier xD

My favourite part of the ending of Ragnarok is when Kratos yells “it’s Kratin’ time” and then Krates all over the Aesir.

My favourite moment was definitely when Thanos came to help Kratos so they both could get their revenge against Thor.
This is the best!
At the end, when Kratos says "Its Morbin time" I literally got chills...
Same, definetly gonna get game of the year
Did he do a Fortnite dance as well?
Please stop
It's God Of Warrin' time
No. He said it's Miller time
Having the option to swipe the touch pad to enable or disable the HUD was the best thing. I played almost the entire game without the compass on screen and really never needed it in normal play. Only really when I went back to complete side objectives I would turn it on momentarily to get my bearings. It really is the best way to use the compass.
I did the same thing, best way to play imo.
I used an aftermarket remote controller cuz the OEM ones were broken.
Things were fine and dandy, up until I got to the random ass point where I jade to frickin swipe left or some shit with Faye and the aftermarket remote didn't work cuz the tough pad is more of a click pad.
I flipped the hell out until i googled the solution.
Turns out you can control puzzles into he settings menu
Random ass shit I swear
And it was ONLY for that part!
No other parts!
Yo that scene where Kratos pulls the blade of Olympus from in between his ass cheeks was epic. Who knew he had with him all along.

I couldn’t put my thumb on it but the Compass thing was a little wacky for me too so I went into settings and found that you could enable R3 to pan the camera in the proper direction… This is really helpful because you can just spam that button until you are where you need to be
Bless you for this 🤣 I freaking hated the compass, it was so confusing to me, but I get why the game designers did that. Glad there's a work around

100% of the dialogue in this game sounds like twitter threads or millenials whining.
Virgin Odin argue with spineless Thor.
…No it doesn’t? They just talk like normal people. Which is probably what they were going for trying to go against how the greeks spoke in the original trilogy since these gods are much more rough around the edges and aren’t as “majestic”
@@milkman-30 "rough around the edges" and soylent-sipping bisexual graphics designer from San Francisco are very different tones, dude.
@@k.constantine If you got those tones from the dialogue that sounds like a personal problem. All I heard were just y’know, people. talking. Normally.
@@milkman-30 Bro, you know that there are many ways to write archaic-sounding dialogue, right?
Hell, Kratos himself in the Trilogy sounded much less refined than the Olympians. All they had to do is copy how he spoke to draw a nice parallel, but no, Odin has to be a shifty accountant from New York because the writers are limp-wristed diversity hires or nepotism stooges that never worked a day of physical labor in their life.
Softboy feminist dad Kratos who apologizes to everyone and trusts everyone he meets is such a step down from even GOW 2018 which was already mediocre when compared to the original trilogy or even just the original first game.
Very interesting with the map. I've gotten into the habit of not really using the compass and just map+cardinal direction navigating myself through the world. I didn't even realize that was an issue in the last game too
Dude when Kratos discovered that Atreus was the front man for Atreyu the band, and then Odin became a groupie for the European tour and followed them around? Wow. I mean seriously I was blown away.
"There she gooesss again!!!!"😂😂
😴
The crimson by atreyu goes really well with the god of war series! Please give it a listen!!
It was great to see Kratos throw it back at the end of game.
The 2018 writing was better. And that's all I am gonna say about it.
And even then, I think this game still had some really good writing and probably some of the most emotional moments for, me at least
@@milkman-30 This game is misplaced. The scenes. The story. Everything. The only good thing about it is the performances. The actors have put their heart into their performances.
I think God of war ragnarok is boring and depressing. I miss the old style of god of war.
Can’t stand the puzzles.
Hate puzzles in games
I didn't like how Odin and Thor spoke, their dialogue was really weird, like they were mobsters or bikers.
I thought Ryan Hurst was a great Thor and Odin was fine too, but the dialogue written for them just kind of takes me out of it and ruins the immersion in my opinion.
None of the other God of War games were like that, and they never needed to be, instead they had solid writing and there-in, solid dialogue.
The story of Ragnarok is fine even with the weird changes to Norse Mythological lore, they just should have phrased the dialogue different, so it doesn't feel like you're watching Sons of Anarchy or some other show, it felt just inappropriate for the setting.
I think the main reason they were originally gonna release it within 3 years of the previous one is due to the fact that in Norse mythology, Fimbulwinter lasts 3 years
It was a bold choice for the devs to have a 20 min Odin X Kratos sex scene. Very wierd but brave
Ok I'm buying the game right now 😳
It’s crazy to even see a game come out anymore that’s actually finished and playable yet alone great out the gate
And runs great also
That's how you know standards are at an all time low. "Wow! A game that isn't broken day 1. A MASTERPIECE!" I'll wait till the honeymoon period is over to see what people really think of the game.
@@inputfunnygame is mid af. Beat it and platinumed it. Story is mid, combat is mid, it feels like AC: Valhalla with better combat. You can really feel it when Kratos chops someone in half or rips of a head. Musical score is forgettable and the new characters introduced are annoying besides like one or 2. Oh there is also like 4 hours of cutscenes so that always nice. You get to put down your controller for like 15 mins at a time and listen to these norse gods and creatures speak like modern day Twitter users while kratos stands there like an idiot listening. I have no clue why these games are put on a pedestal when there are mediocre games that are easily compared to it.
@@temp-td2uk Spot on. This game is a 6/10 at best and I even think I'm being generous with that score. It's basically a Marvel movie that you can play sometimes.
@@temp-td2uk …I’m convinced you’re just pretending every part of the game is mid just because you WANT to hate it. Also it’s put on a pedestal because not everyone shares the same opinion as you.
Spoiler Alert: Kratos becomes the next black president of the United States
My favorite part of the game was where Kratos and the California Raisins take over New Hampshire and Odin leaves them alone because he knows he can't compete with that
THIS GAME IS VERY UNDERWHELMING AND FRANKLY BORING AND IRRITATING:
THE LAST 3(!!!) HOURS WERE:
SMALL TALK WITH THE CHILD
WALKING AROUND (LITERALLY)
DOING STUPID PUZZLES
SO FAR ONLY BLIPS OF ENEMIES USUALLY UNDERWHELMING BATTLES
3 HOURS!!!!!!!!!!!!!
6.8/10 SO FAR FOR ME- VERY NOT-FUN
IGN AND GAMESPOT MUST HAVE PEDOPHILE REVIEWERS- last of us 2 WAS ALSO NOT ANYWHERE NEAR A 10 BUT THEY WENT AHEAD AND GAVE THEM 10s BECAUSE THEY HAD A LITTLE CHILD IN THAT GAME
PEDO ALERT????
Did you even play the game? The last three hours was turning surtr into ragnarok and then waging a whole war onto asgard.
its a mediocre PS4 game nothing more and nothing less
Puzzles every 5 steps. Sections that drag out a lot. Navigation sucks. Bullet sponge enemies that constantly jump exactly 180 degrees behind you to inflict maximum annoyance since you have to move the camera in an insane degree making you dizzy. I didn't had those issues at the original...
Crazy that a GOW game makes me hate fighting enemies. Didn’t think it was possible but these two recent games have managed to do it
The whole appeal to a lot of these Sony IPS is tied to the Story and Graphics. I have never once been impressed by the gameplay loops for either of the God of Wars or the Horizons for that matter. Having mediocre traversal puzzles sprinkled into a third person action/adventure game should not be a requirement.
oh please its a carbon copy except you get to play as his insufferable son now.
By this logic, Batman arkham city is a carbon copy
I DIDNT LIKE THE WAY THOR AND ODIN STORYS ENDED...I FELT THAT THEY WERE JUST SOMEWHAT STRONG AND NOT LIKE THE NUCLEAR POWER GODS THAT THEY WERE BACK IN GOD OF WAR 2018

@@Bruh-ok1rq Do NOT buy a console just to play one or two good games. Just borrow someone's for a weekend or go over to their place and finish the game. Since it's around 30 hours, you can probably experience it over two or three weekends. PC gamers are seldom into these kiddy console games, but Sony has to make their money somehow.
nowhere near as good as 2018 GOW
I cant believe kratos gets lumbago and dies at the end of the game so sad
That shirt makes it look like you’re about to board the Enterprise
The media sold the first one as a generational game.. got it and it was a good story with virtually no gameplay progression and lazy enemy design. It's hard to trust the same people that gave the first game a 10. I'll wait for people actually dropping money to review this.
same
its a masterpiece.
I’ve had about two months roughly to marinate on the game and it’s still excellent and takes a spot as my favorite game.
You can literally turn off the compass which I did for the whole game. Also, I really don't understand your difficulty complaint.. there are literally 2 difficulties higher than what you played to make it more challenging? You didn't even talk about the actual flaws of the games, primarily the atrocious fast travel system, the map and the tedious traversal.
Yeah. I think Luke is best when he sticks to recapping game stories beat by beat and maybe adding some Milquetoast commentary on the story or gameplay.
I don't know why this Starfleet Engineer is doing a review of a video game, but it's cool that he traveled back in time just to do it.
My favorite part of Ranarok was when I got to actually play as Kratos. All the disney movie shit with Aterus pissed me off.
2018 is the better overall game. The writing is better am the story if more fluid. I beat the game yesterday an found that the story is a little confusing an convoluted. There r breath taking moments an absolutely boring moments that really bring the game to a halt. The game has surprisingly fun moments that I wasn't expecting. It's also quite the journey especially if u played this right after 2018. I'd also say things happen that just don't jive with me, the fashion with which they happen either r way to quick or utterly unbelievable. I also highly disagree that there aren't pacing issues. As I said above there really r. Just for my bona-fides I've played an beaten every entry at least 5 times each other then the phone game betrayal. I bought my ps5 cuz of ragnarok an wouldn't have played on a ps4 as i want to play these games the best way possible immediately. I love this series more then any other so when I feel disappointed or let down its to the extreme cuz I want this game to succeed. I turned so many people onto 2018 when it came to PC an they loved it. Idk if I can say to someone u will throughly love this entirely as I do with 2018. Still great tho I do really like it, its just 2018 was so refreshing an ragnarok is the same so the evolution isn't there this time. And again the writing isn't as sharp imo
8.75
I love the story in this game but it does feel like the pacing was off at some points but I dont think it hurts the final product too much. Plus the ending was just…beautiful. I’d give this like a 9.6 but I definitely see where you’re coming from.
@𐌌𐌉𐌋𐌊 I have to replay it. I dont know what's up I replayed 2018 immediately after an have beaten it prolly 9 times but ragnarok once an I don't feel compelled to replay it

Combats the same. Enemy variety has slightly improved but the gameplay is the same. Last games enemies appeared to be more deadly and detailed and felt like beasts. For the story sake you have to play with multiple characters without your choice. The format is exactly the same as last one. It's a DLC to the 2018 game.

paid review or what? crazy.. this game is ass so far.. I'm so bored. i'll go play GOW3 now..
Freya gives Kratos the compass in the last game, so maybe it being buggy is accurate because she’s pissed lol
It seemed buggy in the first too, especially when you're on the boat. It tries to navigate you around the world to get you where you need to go since you can't just make a beeline to your destination. But I felt sometimes it was off, telling me to take the long way round rather than the most optimal route.
I think you didn't quite comprehend the weapon system-. You can do really crazy stuff. Like an undying Kratos or doing massives amount of damage melting even the toughest bosses withiin seconds.
Have I just become over sensitive to spoilers or are people showing things in thier reviews they say are spoiled free that genuinely suprise me and make me regret having watched it so soon.
For anyone watching…. Around 10:00 in theres a scene that genuinely surprised me and I wish I would have learned on my own.
This is the second time this happened with these reviews…. So I guess I’m going dark until I’m deep into the game. Can’t wait to start tomorrow at midnight! Ganna be a long night!
No you are right. He spoiled a lot of stuff
There were some spoilers with subtitles too.
The compass isn’t useless? Have you gone for platinum? It legit saved my life. There are multiple floors in many areas in which the compass helps immensely through navigation. Extremely confusing to traverse the realms without in some places.
Can’t be the only one who found that baffling.
I loved when kratos said, "it's kratosing time" and then kratos'd all over everyone
Woah there, there's a boy in the vicinity. (right, I don't remember) He could see significant prison time doing that.
I played 60& from now , if god of war 1 is 10/10 . ragnarok just 7/10 .............it feel like a Mess up DLC with bad story.

yeah, I will skip this PS4 copy and paste GOW complete for Callisto Protocol
I don’t the compass issue because I I used the touchpad to swipe and get rid of the UI swiping up for navigation assist
I agree with the compass point but maybe it's just me but because of how it was designed I was actually paying more attention to the world and overtime figured out where things were naturally although definitely at the beginning of each realm yes I completely agree that is a problem I'm glad it wasn't just me that was having that problem
After finishing the game im still in aw on how amazing it really is. Santa Monica did exactly what I wanted them to do. I just wanted more and thats what they gave us. They didn't reinvent the wheel or do some stupid pointless thing just to make it different. No, they gave us everything we love, but more and better this time. I don't want to spoil it for anyone, but wow I was shocked on how much was in here. Every-time I thought I knew what was gonna happen I was wrong. They just kept coming with surprises in the best way possible. The first game was a more grounded story that I absolutely loved. Ragnarock is a truly epic emotional conclusion to this story. One of the best things they did was flesh out the characters. For example Sindri and Brok got way more character development in this game and It made me love them even more. This game really earned itself as a sequel with the story and the gameplay. I loved Elden Ring so much, but I think GoW Ragnarock is my GOTY. Santa Monica really knows what they are doing and they are an insanely talented studio. Except for the UI. Somehow the UI in this game got worse.
"they gave us more"
*Looks at the objectively worse combat system*
Yeah, they gave us more...
It's still a game at the end of the day and needs to nail that. It's more walking and cutscenes than anything else.
@@cokeweasel1064 This gotta be the most braindead reply ever lmao. The combat is pretty much the same with a couple more mechanics added actually. Way more bosses and enemies. You probably didn't even play the game LMAO.
@Chandler Burse They removed way more than they added. And what is new is pretty lame, the triangle attacks which are the main focus brake the flow of combat as you have to pause more or less for each one of them. They added a new weapon, but removed his bare hands abilities, and the new weapon is lame af. Check God of War Ascension - they did a great spear gameplay in the pvp section of the game.
@@cokeweasel1064 “Objectively worse” Yeah no that’s an opinion buddy.
Didn't know David Fincher was a big fan of God of War and Star Trek. Very cool.
It's really uncanny how much he sounds like david fincher, even his sense of humor is similar to david fincher in interviews.
as much as I love your reviews, this game has a lot of more issues than the compass. I constantly see people praising the pacing of this game and it just feels like they don't know how good pacing should be.. Just bc Mimir yells "Oh Brother its so tense back home" doesn't mean they should spend any time doing anything other than the next main quest step. some of the plotholes and just uninteresting sections of the game (IRONWOOD LOOKING AT YOU) make this so boring other than your first playthrough. Stop normalizing a whole games experience just for people who play it once.
My favourite part was when Odin shouted: "It's treason then!" And then does a mad 360 spin.
This game is extremely tedious and extremely tedious.
Tedious to the point where you forget all about the story, the game, the objective because youre just fucking stuck on the stupid purple arrow puzzles
I’m actually quite fine with the compass system, makes it easier to not miss little gaps or entrances that you need to reach
it's awful. Love the game. But the compass is atrocious.
I agree, totally fine with it.
@@christiansjolander86 you are fine with something weird. Makes no sense to me
so we are at an impasse. I do not understand why people would appreciate a compass system where it only ever points in a single direction regardless of how twisty-turny dead-endy the map is. So just eff’ off with this whole ‘makes no sense’ thing.

lol i found the compass extremely useful, not sure if thats just me, but i had no issues with it
With the navigation it makes sense to me, especially if the map is busy in a sense mant different directions etc so in a complicated way it’s guiding you I’m happy with it, it might encourage you to even learn some of the map. So I like it
Is the compass not like this in gow 2018 anyways?
I replayed gow 2018 a few weeks ago. The compass is like this in 2018
@@BossBros7900 yes it is, his complains of the puzzle being too easy also doesnt make sense since their purpose is to break out the combat so they cant be too hard
Yeah I personally prefer the compass to be this way because it lets me know which path has optional chests and which path is the main way to go so I don’t accidentally go down the main path and then have to backtrack for side content
@@joshuacollado6433 exactly. And because the maps can be mazes, pointing me in a direction isn’t helpful. I might have no idea how to actually get there. It’s like a map with directions. When you put a adress it doesn’t just point you in a straight line and say “go this way” it gives you it in steps and which turns to make and where. This is the how this compass works. That’s a good thing lmao
Besides the compass, your critiques are puzzling to me.
‘Gear system is ‘meh’’ - If you only played 2 sets of gear through your whole play through then of course you won’t see the complexity of it. It’s even deeper then 2018 with the expanded combat systems. Outside if NG+ end game gear in 2018 was Cursed Mist set and that’s all. With shield, stun, runic, companion, triangle abilities, amulets etc. it’s clearly much deeper with multiple end game sets
‘Difficulty too easy’ - crank it up, problem solved. Particularly if you’ve played through 2018 multiple times.
‘Puzzles are meh’ - you’re definitely entitled to your opinion here but there’s more to puzzles then in 2018 too with more variability. Curious as to what you’d like to see instead
I would really appreciate seeing how the game looks and runs on the base PS4 as I can't be bothered to spend money on a PS5 while there are so few games I want to play on it when my PC will probably get to play most of those games in a years time anyway.
I felt the same, but I got an invitation from Amazon to buy the digital edition at the normal MSRP, so I pulled the trigger and bought it. And man, I am so glad I did cause it's an amazing system. Just the controller features alone make it worth it. My PC hasnt seen much action since I got my PS5.
@@antthomas7916 yeah, I know that it's a great system and that it does some amazing things. And I have a DualSense and it deepens the immersion a lot in some games. But the way Sony is operating right now, with it's games coming quicker and quicker to PC I just can't justify the purchase as my financial situation, while not terrible, isn't that well off that I can just throw out half a grand for no reason. Or I could, but I'd rather invest it in other things in my life and just wait until Ragnarok comes to PC a few years down the line.
According to digital foundry, the game is very well optimised no matter what console you will be playing on.
Check out the Digital Foundry video.
I have already seen their video, although the dedicated PS4 video isn't even out yet. But they mentioned that it's a really solid version of the game.
The "problem" with their approach is that they don't have enough time to waste to check out the most taxing parts of the game, which are usually endgame content and the final few bosses. Nothing they can really do about that as that would be a disproportionate amount of time to spend for like 5-30 seconds of video material.
But I will check out the PS4 video anyway, just to get a general impression of the game. They usually do a good job with those videos
On the compass: I like the way it is because I use it to confirm that I’m going in the wrong direction as a means of fully exploiting. In other words: if the compass is pointing me to a choke point I know that is the critical path and can turn around and explore. Beyond that you literally don’t need the compass for critical path. The characters are constantly egging you on in the critical path direction to the point of being annoying.
Gotta say I didn't really like combat as much as gow 2018. The blade pause and attacks were my favorite moves. It's gone in this game. Also there axe recall doesn't have the same "thud" when kratos catches it. It felt very off

Amazing that was amusing
An honest review: Great Sequel, technically more impressive than previous one, more gear options and arguably better combat. Bigger but less impressive and less consistent story tuned for 10 to 14 year old kids. For an adult it is a stretch to consider it compelling, the previous game had a more compelling story suitable even for an adult audience. One thing I would add to the game is some villages with people/npcs in each realm so they don't feel completely deserted after Ragnarok, maybe it's just me but that emptiness while going for platinum made me sad.
6:27 funny how we don't really think about it, but we're still in the bad old days of crappy game animation that's still TRYING to become better. Funny to think this is the "olden days" for future generations.
I finished gow 2018 at release of gow ragnarok. I love these games but they repeat same mistakes like horizon did. Copy paste b.s. and bunch of crafting that feels pointless. It’s like Ubisoft formula became the Bible for the game industry. So far enjoying my time with the story…
Best difficulty for first playthrough is one before give me god of war and ng+ give me god of war
The game looks good until you see the combat. Another game where gameplay has taken the backseat and people are okay with a bare minimal combat system that looks and plays poorly. This reeks of another massively overrated game like the reboot was sadly.
Yo man, the compass is truly a complete non-issue. Did you ever look in the gameplay settings? It’s not “ever-present” if you don’t want it to be.
I changed the HUD settings to custom and put the compass on ‘swipe’ pretty much as soon as I got it. I would just use the touch pad to toggle it on/off and it vastly improved my experience with the game.
don’t make a big point on the issues with the compass without making it clear it’s a 100% OPTIONAL mechanic that the player can tweak to their liking.
Great video tho lol I enjoyed your thoughts on the game either way
The Compass!?!? 😂 of all the actual things to critique
I expected more, better. 2018 is still the better game, they should have called this The last of us Atreus edition. 80% of it is copy and paste from the previous iteration, the 10/10 scores are obviously from a bunch of shills or they've no idea what a good game is all about.

Damn. You really called out Under the Mayo there.
There is not much to spoil about this game, no crazy plot twists or mystery - the game plays out exactly the way you expect it. The only shocking part was how much softer and weak Kratos has got. No real bad-ass John Wick / SuperSayan moments as he destroys his enemies. In fact he spares 2 of the main people he faces off with, only for others to finish his fights, was meh.
And the writing in this one went off a cliff. Saying bad writing - getting worse - is an "improvement" seems weird. I think you're confusing good voice acting, for good writing. This felt like a Netflix / Disney+ show, with added gore and a few swear words. But the script was very tropey, and canned. Like a western gangsta / mob film. Especially with how they portrayed Odin.
Puzzles in games are why I often stop playing and never finish. It’s often very tedious
It’s so boring because a lot of times they’re not even cool just pointless and time consuming
@@JM00237 yeah.. I hear you
@@livibam I just look how to solve them online if it takes me more then like 5-10 minutes I ain’t spending my whole day trying to solve some dumbass mini game puzzle that has nothing to do with the story
@@JM00237 I used to try and solve them myself until I noticed that it made me dislike the games 10x more
@@thebadwolf3088 yeah uncharted is pretty tedious for me but Skyrim was a cake walk.
The footage shown in this video is major spoilers. Even talking about endgame activity. Wow. Wish I didn’t watch this at all.
My guy... what have you been smoking.
This game....is.... jesus I can't even begin with how god awefull the story is.
1. Game starts off with "i'm going to bury him".
Great writing literally pissing on the norse culture, and the emotional catalyst for the first game. Writers didn't care.
2. "You can fight now" because "fiblewinter affects some more than others". Well how god damn convenient that those affected by fimblewinter are EXACTLY the ones needed for the plot. Deus ex machina anyone?
3. Marbels. Fucking. Marbles. "oh shit I can't handle what has been set up, so i'ma RETCON IT".
5. "You're nothing except part of HIS story". riiight out of that left wing feminist cuck writing school.
6. God of War game not about the actual god of war.
7. Kratos butchers EVERYONE, except in this one side quest, this one boss where he says "Oh i killed someone and it had consequences. So i'm trying not to do that again"... then goes back to butchering. Can you say ludo-narative dissonance?
8. Ragnarok profecy says what? FUUUCk i can't write that..... RETCON THAT SHIT!
9. Odin is about as intimidating as a crackheaded old man.
10. Every single male character is constantly saying sorry is the bad guy or incompetent.
11. KRATOS LITERALLY RETCONING THE EMOTIONAL CHOICE MADE AT THE END of God of War 2018. "i'm sorry. shouldn't have done that. You the strong powerfull female should have made that choice".
I've put down the controller so... SO... many times just to facepalm on how utter garbage the writing is. Haven't finished it. But my god is the writing bad compared to the first game.
But hey "tall glass of milk"... because he's white... WHICH HE ISN'T HE's ASHEN!!
they needed a console seller, they got one, but at the expense of one I my favorite ips of all time
@@temp-td2uk Yeah. Sadly. And it worked. I'm a PC guy. I bought a PS5... FOR this game.
@@TheMajinTrunks lmao. Ps5 is a great console, but I knew after how underwhelming the last GOW was that this one was probably going to be just as meh
@@temp-td2uk The last GOW i truly believe is a modern day masterpiece. I could write an essay on how every single element of the game loops back on itself, passing through gameplay story and visuals.
It's a wonder. On their own, the elements are... good. But they blend together into a once in a generation experience.
I just gush thinking about everything. How boat stories, not only serve worldbuilding, but it also serves as story expansion, helps the game maintain the no loading screen as it adds experience to the boating around, thus truly feeling like you're just exploring with a friend... and has a naritive pay off with Kratos delivering the final story, that of Atreus the spartan warrior.
One element... and it just oozes into all aspects of the game.
The fact that Atreus is part of combat mechanics, so when he gets sick and is not there, not only is Kratos feeling the loss, but so are you as the player, having a core element of the combat now missing. Then when Atreus starts becoming arogant and not listening to Kratos... he literally does not listen to you either as you press buttons but he just does whatever..... once again mirroring the distancing between Father and son. When they truly make amends... you as a player finally have your full combat abilities available.
Just damn brilliant.
And those are just two.... man God of War 2018 is a masterpiece. Sure i mean if you strip the characters away, pure gameplay it's just... ok. An ok Soulslike. And if you just put the story on paper, it's a good story. I have the book adaptation.
But when all the elements come together, it's just the pinacle of what a game can be. Story/gameplay/graphics just mesh in.. a once in a lifetime masterpiece.
Ragnarok just... retcons most of it and doesn't inovate enough mechanic wise. In fact, because the story is different... gameplay wise... it just hits differently.
Take the Atreus example. How his relationship with Kratos is reflected in gameplay to the player.
Ragnarok... you have 3 modes. Kratos. Kratos+Freya, Kratos + Atreus. You never have as a player access to all your abilities, and there's never any emotional story reasons to mirror this experience. So while it does brake up the monotony, having slightly different gameplay... there are is no connection between the player and kratos. "Oh i'm doing this now"
Compared that to Kratos feeling Atreus going arogant, and you not being able to give him commands.
IT's just... meh vs masterful.
2018 GOW is a masterpiece. ANd it's a hill I'll die on.
@@TheMajinTrunks I respect your opinion on the matter. I feel a little different but I get why you believe it’s such a great game. To me it was good but not great. Compared to ragnarok I think it’s great but that isn’t saying much. Glad we could have a good discussion about it
I didn't had any problem on the compas at all and i did 100% of the game.
I know it is just my experience but wasn't hard to understand to me
The part where it's revealed that Freya is Atreus' mom was such a twist. I wouldn't have imagined that Kratos would get those memories removed. I guess I should have seen it coming since Atreus and Faye don't have the same hair colour but Freya's and Atreus' hair colour is the same.
I hope thats 🧢 because i havent played the game. Also dont respond to this comment becai will get the notification on youtube

2018 had the same compass and I preferred that over a singular direction because instead of trying to get to the location, it tells me exactly where to go instead of scratching my head to how to get to point “y”
honestly it's "meh..." to me, game play is kinda boring, it's annoying to explore and the story that is really the reason to play this game... is nothing really special, it's a game
I literally just completed the 2018 game for the first time yesterday, and immediately went n preordered ragnarok.. The navigation was probably the only real issue I had with the 2018 game, seems like this games nav might be just as jacked as the original one lol
Yeah he's magnetized to the ground. Match that with the all-one-shot cinematography, and you have a gsme that is NIGHTMARE to get around in. And NO ONE talks about that.
@@blippitybloo .. most games when I complete the main story I’m at least 70% done with all the content in the game.. god of war? 27% lol n that’s mainly because getting around and navigation is such a pain in the ass I just couldn’t be bothered to do most of the side content
@@SayMy_User_Name 100% the same for me. I started down the road to platinum it, but quickly bowed out.
Bad take on the compass honestly. If you just passively follow it it is nice. Unless you like pathfinding I suppose
At the end of the game Atreus comes out as trans.
I'm not holding out any hope of GoW 1.5 being that good. I played 2018 for the first time just last week and it was worse than I thought it was going to be. The only really good part of the game is the relationship between Kratos and boy. But like, I don't care. I'm playing a game, so if the gameplay is trash then it's not a good game. I got the novel adaptation of 2018 (haven't read it yet) and I have this weird feeling that the novel is actually the correct way to experience 2018. Not the game. Because the combat was awful in 2018, to the point where I just cannot bring myself to finish the game. And amusingly, my criticism of GoW 2018 is the same as my criticism of Genshin Impact. It's the same 5-hit combo over and over again, with the occasional special attack. It's just braindead.
Cant believe Luke didn't mention the scene where Kratos grabbed his axe after years of promising only peace for him and Atreus, looked his son in the eyes and said " I will once again be God Of War: Ragnarok (2022)"
Truly one of the games of all time
"Well John, it looks like this is it for me. I guess I'm going through a...... Red Dead Redemption, part 2 (2018)"
