I feel like you're being sarcastic here but to be honest i think that quest exemplifies what i love so much about this game. It's a tiny little missable side thing, doing a mundane favour for an old lady, but they've managed to make it engaging as all hell. The quest takes only a couple minutes to complete, but they still took the time to hide an interesting little story in there that feels unique and separate from every other side quest in the game.

Even at full price it’s a bargain to be fair. 200 hours into he game and just started NG+ on death march and it’s the most fun I had in ages in a single player game. Good combat that feels fluent yet still punishes you for mistakes and mis-utilizing your kit and awesome sinergy in all sorts of stupid builds you can come up with (which we all agree on it will still be euphoria with hybrid alchemy-weapon build but yeah it’s still good to have fun with bs crossbow or quen and sign builds).

Rationality rules, depends. Rockstar’s game design is super outdated by today’s standards and if you enjoyed RDR2 regardless of that you’ll probably enjoy the witcher games as well. Though your mileage may vary, I spent roughly 100 hours on my first playthrough (with dlcs and preparation for NG+) and that is far more content than I ever got from a “recently” released single player game. Definitely a good buy. If not now, then when you find a discount.

I actually found the side quests were the strongest part of the game. Fully exploring the fate of the Bloody Baron, Finding out if Yennifer was truly in love, rescuing the mages, deciding to assassinate the king, deciding who would hold the throne of Skelligie, these were all huge adventures that weren't forced on you. It really made the game feel like Geralt was part of a larger world. I could have had a game made out of these, the adventures of Geralt, and never had a main quest at all. And these ideas came to their fruition in the DLCs Heart of Stone and Blood and Wine. Both of these ignored the over arching plot to focus on the adventures of Geralt.

Combat *preparation* is great. Combat itself is a joke, even on death March with upscaling on, even without Quen abuse. The moves have terrible hit boxes and you have no control over which one Geralt does at any time, and the enemies themselves are a joke with next to no patterned attacks and mostly just variations of "slam Geralt with whatever weapon or appendage you have".
Is kind of a shame because the rest of the game is so damn good, but combat is a snore fest. Without even getting into the terrible lock on system and the insane trouble with uneven ground and verticality of hit boxes (hint - there's none) to the point where it's disadvantageous to occupy higher ground -.-

I don’t see Geralt as weightless. In fact in heavy armor his hindered movement is noticeable. Also Witcher’s are like Captain America or Black Panther. Enhanced “super humans” due to genetic modification. So of course he moves effortlessly. Like Legolas walking on snow.

    • @Mikri90
      @Mikri90 5 років тому +57

I could say that he feels only weightless when jogging/sprinting....doesn't feel like that in combat though.
I think the main flaw of the game is poor movement control and movement animations. The jogging animation is simply poorly done. What makes it worse is that walking and sprinting look really cool, but the jogging looks so dated, like the game is at least a decade old. They really failed at it.
As for movement issues, it's not like it's horrible, but turning and changing direction in small spaces works really bad and it's kind of unreliable so you can't get used to it, and traversing obstacles such as low walls, fences etc. can really be annoying. This game would seriously benefit from better coding in that regard. I know this is no Assassins Creed and vertical gameplay is barely existent, but it would still benefit from having better movement system.
All that aside, it's still one of my favorite games ever and it's a masterpiece overall.

Fallout 4's choices seldom actually matter, in terms of how the game actually plays out. I love Bethesda to death, but that's not a true RPG. You are playing solely by Bethesda's rules, with minor choice differences to make it seem like you're actually playing "your own version of the story". In the end, everyone's games flesh out to be the exact same thing. Did you not ever get annoyed at the fact that your quest dialogue is summed up to basically picking if you want to be an asshole or not, and then getting the same results either way? Once I actually figured this out, the game (and most of Bethesda's games, for that matter) seemed a hell of a lot less awe-inspiring. It's actually super depressing, honestly. Fallout 3 and Oblivion weren't as blatant about it, but it's still the same "one size fits all" gameplay that presents in Fallout 4. If they fix this shit for the next TES and Fallout game(s), making them to FULLY allow for gameplay tailored to your in-game choices, they'll be beyond golden. It's only then that you can really call the next Fallout/TES game a true RPG.

    • @timothye.2902
      @timothye.2902 6 років тому +21

In a literal sense, FO4 is an RPG. You as the player take on the role of a character and make choices in their stead. Not just dialogue choices, but choices about which faction to support and which sidequests to take.
However, I understand the logic behind restricting the term RPG in such a way that FO4 (a game which I am neutral about tbh) is disqualified, since if you cast the RPG net too broadly, basically any game becomes an RPG.
I mean in Super Mario, you take on the role of a character and make choices in their stead. So is Super Mario an RPG? Kind of.
But again, I think if you take RPG too literately, you let games take advantage of the tag and drown out true Role Playing Games with meaningful character and world building, dynamic games where your narrative choices change the world around you, and your build choices affect how you play and what resources you bring into a given challenge.

It took me a while until it became fun to me, and then it just became second nature after a while. Luckily, the narrative and the lore is so immersive that it didn't even bother me.
The most enjoyable part about the combat system is getting obliterated by a new enemy type, only to have that "aha" moment on the second or third try when I realize that a certain enemy is vulnerable to Yrden for instance, and gets severely hampered by it. When you figure out what is the weak spot of an enemy type, it gets both easier and more fun to fight it.

In defense of the movement during combat, Geralt is supposed to feel 'weightless', Witchers are, after all, superhumans (Geralt even more so, as he is physically blessed since birth, and because of that he was subjected to experimental mutations, making him physically superior to pretty much all humanoid creatures, including other witchers). And his way of fighting (meaning with all the fancy pirouettes and stuff) actually exists as an actual sword fighting style in real life, and Geralt's fighting style in the books, the first game and TW3 is modeled after that style. Also, as 'cheap' as Geralt's speed and agility may seem, it doesn't even come close to how powerful he was in the books (in my opinion at least). As for the difficulty, I recommend sticking to Death March difficulty and turning enemy up scaling on, you still won't need an awful lot of skill for the combat itself, but strategy will be required as well as using the alchemy system to its full potential.

I never claim that The Witcher 3 is flawless, only that it is perfect for me. I am grateful that CDPR made it accessible to gamers, like me, who couldn't succeed at a Soul's game if our lives depended on it. The stories, the soundtrack, the facial animations all made it an immersive and wondrous game for me. Would I have preferred a smarter horse and not having to parallel park Geralt to loot?.....yeah probably:) I also wouldn't have minded less spitting(blech) and while I understand the reuse of lesser character models it was immersion breaking at times. Still, if that was how corners needed to be cut in order to make this masterpiece of a game, so be it!
I understand people have different tastes and those who must customize their own characters or must have stealth or must have true ranged options or must have combat so grueling that it makes them want to gouge out their eyes with a fork, are obviously not going to appreciate this game as much. I think, though, that some are just butt hurt that CDPR came out of relative nowhere with this fantastic game to knock whoever their chosen developer is off its throne and then rubbed salt in the wound by following exemplary consumer practices showing both respect and gratitude to their fan base.

Still feels awesome doing the high level quests at a low level. I've always do Heart of Stone about 10 levels short of the recommendation. Sure I can't use anything I get from it immediately but everything feels so much better completing it. It takes patience and perseverance to actually complete the quests. Heck, I even did Blood and Wine the same way and it was really fun. Sure, some fights weren't fair at all at such a low level, but the stuff in the main quest was doable with some effort...felt odd fighting the last boss in the main quest at level 35 instead of like level 21 which I think is the recommendation for the last MQ mission.

Also the mutagens. A bit late to the party but that’s what really opened up the combat even more. The versatile kit you are supposed to be using is what separates the difficulty levels. The higher you move the more likely you will have to use your consumables and have to refill them with strong alcohols creating a never ending cycle of macro management and an immersive experience of going around trying to find all the components for every potion and oil possible so you won’t have as hard of a time with all the enemies. A real witcher would certainly plan everything out just like this otherwise they would fall like the witchers whose gear you are trying to collect.

A few decotions/potions plus Euphoria (from B&W) equals broken gameplay. It's virtually impossible to do DM without alchemy, but that difficulty becomes a trifle when you actually use alchemy. Combat isn't very well-balanced, unfortunately, but it still feels cool to play.

  • @TAYLOR22211

Great critique, but I disagree with you about the combat difficulty.
I see it like this... for people who just want to experience the story / environment and don't want to be hindered by having to worry about combat, they should play on the "Just the story" setting.
On the other hand, the higher difficulties are for people who are interested in the advanced combat systems like potions, oils, bombs, etc.
On easy and medium you will never need to worry about potions, oils, bombs... hell, even signs are unnecessary for those difficulties. But on hard and very hard you will almost certainly need to understand and utilize those systems properly.
So essentially I see it as a way of adding a necessary complexity to the combat as you increase the difficulty. To say that this game shouldn't have a difficulty slider seems silly to me. Unlike souls games, lots of people play The Witcher 3 for something other than the combat. Souls combat is balanced for gamers who want a challenge, but The Witcher 3 combat needs to work for complete noobs as well, hence the low difficulty options.
Edit: I guess I commented too early, didn't realize you were going to talk about the stuff below, but I think it just boils down to either preferring immersion or progression when it comes to combat.
As for the huge focus on gear and level, I can see why some people wouldn't like that. For example, why wouldn't you be able to kill a Nekker in Velen just as easily as a Nekker in Skellige? I do however think that it's necessary for this kind of game. If there was no player level, and all Nekkers throughout the whole game had the same health and damage, then I would feel no sense of progression in my ability. On top of that, the amount of quests would be extremely overwhelming. Even though at some points in this game I might have 30+ quests in my log at once, a lot of them recommend me to be a much higher level than I currently am which makes choosing my next quest and progressing through the world a much smoother process imo.
Also, when it comes to the floatiness of Geralt, I've found that accepting that this game's combat is not at all like souls combat makes me appreciate it a lot more. It also makes sense lore wise. Witchers are extremely fast and Geralt's combat style isn't about power, but rather speed and precision. He even compares it to dancing, and that's often how it's described in the books.
So anyway, this comment ended up being way longer than I had planned.
    Love, Taylor

I think one of the biggest immersion breakers I encountered in witches 3 is the looting system. More specifically, the fact that 99% of the NPCs in the game do not care if you loot their entire home from top to bottom right in front of them.
In many ways I'm glad they didn't utilize a sneak system as Bethesda did in the elder scrolls games, as I also find that system to be immersion breaking, but I do wish the NPCs in witcher 3 cared a little more about the items in their home/inn. I'm at least glad that guards care enough to attack you for it.

LOL. I always thought it added an extra bit of dark character. The guy is a master swordsman, a mercenary of sorts, and a kleptomaniac who understands that being a Witcher alone may not pay all the bills. Being in a medieval kind of time setting with far less security settings than what we have today also makes it kind of funny.
Plus, you could always just imagine that the NPCs are too scarred to actually say something to Geralt while he is doing it. Perfectly understandable.

@@daveyjoneslocker4703 Combat is integral in a game about killing monsters and enemies all the time. If you can't make it beyond the usual button mash that the Witcher 3 has been complacent with, I'm sorry but it really fails in that regard.
Almost all the weapons are swords, and almost all have the same fighting choreography, and that shit gets bland real fucking fast. Not to mention, Geralt always seems to forcibly home in on a single enemy, making you quite vulnerable from an attack. Comparing Witcher 3's combat to say another ARPG, like any of the Dark Souls games or Bloodborne, and one can quickly see how much of a difference the depth of combat is. Witcher 3 is just swords, while DS/BB have hammers, twin blades, axes, daggers, etc.On top of that each weapon can have multiple (unique) weapon choreographies depending on your input (e.g. holding down R2 or sprinting before an attack).
Although the design of the open world, its sidequests, and story eventually won me over, I cannot deny that Witcher 3's combat left me quite dissatisfied and stopped me from playing for more than 1 (and a half) playthrough(s).

What makes the Witcher 3 great for me is the story telling and the graphics.
The combat is fun but not excellent
The movement mechanics are ok but not great.
But the environment, story telling, quests, and characters supersede any of the game's negatives.

The Witcher 3 is better when you become emotionally invested in the other characters (I didn't really care for the bloody Baron which is why it took me 2 tries before I got past it). It's about the impact you make on their lives and Geralt's. In addition to that your choices have heavier narrative weight the later you get into the game. LAST CHANCE B4 SPOILERS!!!
The choices you make in the game carry more weight in the world the farther along you get: in the beginning of the game you just affect a few people. Then you affect a town. Then you affect a city. Then you affect a kingdom (and potentially assassinate a King). They did this intentionally to allow players to become adept with how the game handles morality, so that the later you progress you become more capable of making decisions, and it reflects your progress in the game as well. The world and the narrative decisions you make grow as you experience more of it. I know I'm repeating my points a bit but they're worth repeating: I almost didn't make it through the Witcher 3, and I firmly believe the first act with the Baron is the worst one in the entire game.

@Glebinator Just keep chugging, that's the best advice I can give. The world is static at first because you aren't a player in the grand scheme of things yet. Your progress throughout the story will indicate both 1) Geralt's growth as a character and 2) your growth as a player. Also, you're right about the loot. It doesn't really do things different other than raise your stats. The combat is dull if you don't play on the hardest difficulty. But these aren't the things that the Witcher 3 excels at.

But if you push past that the game really begins to shine and it's honestly a fantastic experience. Let yourself care about the side characters too; they are some of the realist NPC's I've ever experienced, and by the time I finished the game I had a lead ball in my chest.

Every nook, cave, swamp, and city street in The Witcher 3 offers something new to explore in its darkly beautiful environment that spans most of a continent. The Witcher 3 and its two sizable expansions are truly exceptional thanks to Geralt's skillfully crafted side stories, monster hunts, and unusual adventures. You are talking about the combat system and show us the most boring combat on screen. You fight overlevelled monsters, you don’t use potions or oils, you don’t use decoctions, you sidestep more than you strike, you don’t counterattack. No wonder you didn’t like it. I loved it. And I say that as someone who played through (and loved) Dark souls and bloodborne. Witcher combat is an absolute joy, but you have to work for it a bit. Put it on the highest difficulty and think about how you will defeat the enemy before you engage in combat. It’s great.

Unless, you decide to explore. There are no other quests or side quests that specifically send you to the camp unless you're already in that area and/or pick up a quest by accident. It's just too good.

I reserve the roll for AoE and monster attacks. For instance when he was fighting the human with a shield it was fucking painful to watch. If he waited and countered, he could have killed him quickly. Instead he whacked at the guys shield until he got lucky. Not fighting smart at all.

The frozen Ciri represents Geralt himself, who was frozen when the Wild Hunt broke through the main gate. And Geralt in the dream represents Ciri, who was seeing this whole situation and couldn't do much, until she lost control, and released her powers.
