Luke Stephens I still think Origins was the better game and I got the platinum for Odyssey. I hated the fact they held back a lot of story arcs behind the DLC when this game is supposed to be part of a trilogy. So only the hardened fans will get the full story, those who didn’t buy the season pass miss out on a lot of trilogy story.
@@wulfmanson12 Anybody with a brain says so. Choices literally do nothing, Kassandra doesn't have a personality she flip flops from whatever shit you pick in dialogue and what she does in cutscenes. Face animations are fucked up, voice acting is shit, combat is tedious and annoying with enemies being damage sponges.
If they want me to buy DLC just stick a shield in there. Just make it work like parry! I don't even care. Though to be fair if anyone ever made a game with proper shield (wall) mechanics I can't see how that would be fun without making it a mini-game. But I want that too. Some cross between first person Tetris and Papers Please.
She really did a great job. Kassandra is so likeable, funny and beautiful, I enjoyed playing her so much. I watched an interview with the actress Melissanthi Mahut and her humor and character came though in rl too. She’s really one of my top lead characters ever in a game. Melissanthi should have won all the awards.
Its so big I didn't even remember the story after some time. I actually liked the island or region missions because they were short and sweet with interesting characters. Every region was like a mini assassins creed game and you will enjoy the game like that.
I really hated the story after meeting the oracle. The level locking and distractions were just too boring and its not like we were starting off with good writing to begin with. I really don't understand how this man praises this game even with caveats.
Quite the opposite for me. I remember very well, even 3 years later the major beats of the story. The theme music is one of my all time favourite pieces of music and instantly gives me flashback of sad drama that Kassie had to go through. I remember the clay girl quest, I remember the family reunion, I remember most of the cultist, I remember very vividly the first time I got to Delphi and the story behind it. I remember the "amazon" dilemma... And I fucking hate some evil characters with passion.
I played this fully 100% through the past half a year for the first time, even DLCs. Lemme tell you, after being in the rank grind for probably 20 ranks now. I probably remember a quarter of the full story 😂
And he spent almost 3 hours discussing this. This game seemed so mediocre to me, defiantly not as good as origins and I didn't actually finish origins, so I'm curious about how this has become such a long critique.
@@NormanWasHere452 This is three of his previous videos, each concentrating on different aspects of the game, roled into one. That's why it's so long. He went this intensely into it as it is his style of content to do that for games on occasion; and because he is a self-professed Assassin's Creed fan. This is an entry of that franchise that is remarkably different from the others, building on the changes implemented by Origins. With all these factors combined, to me, it makes sense that he'd do what he has done. ;)
Drawn out and repetitive. You just described every epic game ever made. That’s what we want out of games we like that have excellent gameplay. But the thing is if it’s repetitive that’s just you not being creative. You can attack this game from several different angles. The number one complaint ppl had about AC is it’s repetitive. Odyssey gives you different archetypes to mix it up and ppl complain it’s not an AC game. Ppl like this don’t deserve to enjoy a masterpiece such as Odyssey so I’m ok with the critics and haters.
I like that grind as well, but the loot on this game is meh and is so repetitive that it got me tired around lvl 26. However I had fun and enjoyed it for the first 20 hours probably
In regards to the mythic monsters, they're a product of Isu artifacts. The artifacts themselves turn anyone unlucky enough to touch them into those beasts as a defense mechanic. Alexios/Kassandra are only able to resist it due to their bloodline. So, they technically make as much sense as the protag's super spear.
Yeah but that's the main reason many of the older ac fans hates odyssey because in the orginal games if anyone that hasn't isu blood in them touches these artifacts they are corrupted but in odyssey they turn people into mythical monsters which breaks the lore
@@ajaxdishbarx54 technically, corruption is a relative term as the artefacts also operate with the world and times that surround them. In modern times, it corrupts and controls the minds of people it touches because in modern times it's easier to defend the artefact that way. In the Greek settings when the items are also so much more powerful they corrupt people by mutating them into something the people fear most, hence why the mythical monsters get to exist. The artefacts make them "real" because the myths are what kept people away.
@@Mr.SoulMusical maybe but unlike you the game doesn't give us any reason or explanation as to why something like that happened and it's not just in the modern times during the 1st ac the corruption of the mind is show even in the lore it was built up like that so it really makes people mad that abandoning the lore for fantasy
Well the original title supposed to be "Odyssey - an Assassins Creed Story" or something like that and they thought of it as more of a spinoff than a real installment of the series. They scratched that for marketing
I hated when you knew who the ancient was in the DLC and still had to complete 4 quests to kill them and I would one shot the boss so I didn't get a narrative really.
Bayek was one of my favorite assassins. His character and his story was intriguing because he wasn’t just someone who ran around and assassinated. He lost his son by his own hands and you could hear the pain in his voice when he was talking about him.
Kassanda lost her(depending on your choices“ entire family, was almost killed by her stepdad, lost her husband had to leave her son behind knowing he will never see him again for his own protection, thats the best about her,you could decide why and how she acts, ill made my kass go full on vengeance mode leaving noone alive and killing anyone connected to the murder of her family
SwaggerHarrystlyes2000minecrafter Ezio lost more than that He lost his family for false treason. They got hanged he lost lots of friends In brotherhood he lost his uncle his hometown got attacked by the borgias his lover died he have waited for more than 20 years to solve a mystery but after that he lived a good life then died on a bench in his hometown
SwaggerHarrystlyes2000minecrafter oh yeah and the Templar’s planned all his family murder the sad thing is that he went to this person that would have prevent his family’s hanging then he left the next day he lied and say they didn’t give them documents then he saw his family get hanged in front of him
@@SwaggerHarrystlyesminecrafter that wasn't before u started playing was it tho. U chose who to kill. Kassandra was more boring than a fucking dead piece of paper
First Mythical creature I faced was thje minotaur. I was in Crete and had just done the quests surrounding the minotaur tourist industry around the island and the game kept just throwing hints at me that an actual minotaur might exist as I cleared those quests and never found it. The game itself kept revving up and up this existence and I kept wanting to find out more and more. Then I went to the ruins, found the key and when the real minotaur showed up, it was one of the best gaming experiences I ever had.
I know this comment is old but I played this game like a month ago, and when I found the sphinx and realized it was really a game of riddles and as a Lotr fan I loved it lol. I actually passed her challenge first try and she really just died no fighting at all and that had to be best ac odyssey moment for me personally. One of the few moment it won’t just hack and slash it just felt like a good moment in the game
I don't miss the linear style, I miss the more narrative focused, basic combat style of ac game. I am not a dark souls fan, and cannot stand the level locking, and was super hyped to hear they abandoned it in Valhalla, for a more skill focused experience.
Wyatt Branham I hope they bring back lively worlds from the old games. Back then cities would be packed with people and merchants everywhere. In Odyssey the world feels so empty
I have logged 200 hours in the game and have yet to complete all side quests. I have completed all main missions for all DLCs and I found the game to be fun. I played and am still playing as Kassandra
i'm 120 hours in and i feel my tally will be well over 300 hours by the end of my playthrough. i try to play as a sneaky archer, so the boss fights are just no fun. but the npc ai logic in fortresses is golden- until they spot my sneaky archer girl.
My lord you guys are slow... I completed my playthrough of the main game, masses of side quests, conquest wars, exploration, the dlc and all big bosses about the world in 150 hours... got completely op after the dlcs and it was awesome. (Played as Alexios, tbh kinda think I’d have enjoyed kassandra more)
@@cinnamongunfire I too have 150 hours with new game + 100%. kasandra was a very great choice, I was on the hardest difficulty n found not much threats. Good game when you got the poison daggers n Poseidon’s trident, n flaming arrows. I don’t get how these ppl have so much hours making no progress
153 hours in, I have checked every undiscovered location marker and completed every side mission (except the daily and weekly ones, because they never end). I have beat both DLC’s, their side quests and undiscovered locations. I have nothing to do anymore on this game. I enjoyed it a lot as a Greek!
Yeah I was pretty slow. finished the full main game 220h 16m 48secs (ignored most for message board and b/w quests since those are repetitive). Just because I keep being amazed with the environment and can’t stop admiring the sights. All trophies completed nonetheless. Alexios slept with everyone except Aspasia though xD I strangely enjoyed the grind here, the padding on this game was tolerable and wasn’t all that bad. I lingered a bit more and revisited sites after I unlocked everything because I wanted to enjoy the environment a bit more. Haven’t done the dlcs yet though.
First time the cutscene with the cyclops happened I thought the goat walking in front of you was a common glitch with npc's during cutscenes which ended up making the cutscene that much better when I realized why the little bleeter was there
Blood fever was one of my favorite side quests. I killed the priests thinking I was doing a good thing by protecting the family I did not think that it would totally annihilate the island
When I went to that side quest I was like "yeah, if this was The Witcher 3, this disease would surely spread through the entire island. Anyways, I don't think Ubisoft would do this." Me, after finding out: "Oh... Shit."
Odyseey should have been a seperate IP. Imagine how cool it would have been for Ubi to fully embrace Greek mythology and not have to find excuses to include the mythical creatures/ monsters or the Assassin storyline. Most people who like Odyseey never liked AC before anyways so not like they needed to carry over the title.
They probably should've made this a separate entity from the Assassin's Creed franchise, but it probably wouldn't have gotten the sales without it though.
Taking the AC elements out would have ruined Odyssey. I spend 90% of my time assassinating and sneaking around in Odyssey. No way that could have stayed in the game if they took the AC title away. It basically would have been For Honor or Ryse, both terrible games. Thank goodness you had nothing to do with the making of this game, no offense lol.
thegreatcalvinio I agree Ac Odyssey should have been an open world RPG set in Ancient Greece embracing the mythology that comes behind it. (Similar to God of War) They could have left the stealth aspect in however distance themselves from the Ac franchise. In my opinion the worst part of this game is the Ac part of it. I haven’t played the DLC but from what I’ve heard the Ac stuff with the Isu and what completely wrecked the lore. Without it Odyssey could have done its own thing and did it well. However I do disagree with the statement that it would not have done well. If it’s a good first party ip, it would have done well.
J C Dont know what game you’re playing but For Honor is great now. On par with Seige in my opinion. Both games sucked at launch but Seige is so popular and loved while For Honor got overlooked.
my biggest problem were the grind and the it being and assassin's creed game. I feel it was being held back because of all the previous lore and was better of being a game about greek myths and not have to worry about the first civ stuff.
Agreed. Being set in the real world seriously limits how much cool stuff you can have in an RPG. It makes the cool Shockwave abilities and stuff stand out way worse too.
@@getthegoons side quests are part of the game, they are fully scripted, have many stages etc. Not doing side quests in RPGs means you should not play such games at all.
I put over 400 hours into this game and its DLC, so 3 hours for a critique? TOO SHORT! :) (note: I loved every damn moment of that 400 hours, mostly because I loved the world so much - having been to Greece, it was amazing to see places I've seen in ruins recreated in a work I can exist and explore in.)
The same for me, I don’t play big games for years just because the games are so big now and I don’t have time to learn everything about the games to play them but the sooner I saw assassins greed on Ancient Greece and those beautiful environments I bought straight a way and I can’t stop playing it, I’m enjoying it every part of it. I’m playing it slowly enjoying it and exploring no rush, 124 hours already with level 45 and only 29% of the main story done, the Gameplay is awesome, looking to play also the Assassin’s Origins just for the Ancient Egypt after I finish odyssey
Really even the confirm cultist/ancient kill because I would have at least liked confessions just any type of characters rather than go here and kill this slightly stronger enemy them stab them again and get better items. I wanted a story like origins I would rather replay origins 10 times than kill every cultist over again especially the Aegean sea cultists yeah no.
@Henrik K Ac 2 was repetitive and Ac odyssey had better facial animations than horizon zero dawn. The side quests were interesting (blue ones). But you will experience this amazing game if you will play it and not bitch about it
The Medusa fight was a real kick in the nuts for me. _Super_ hard. The Cyclops was pretty easy with poison damage, and I recall the Minotaur being the same.
Robert Ti Unity, syndicate, origins (story) all these games are varied in terms of mission, while odyssey spends its time pushing you from one place to another to infiltrate a base to do a specific objective.
TheGamer you’re saying those games were just 2 buttons, when that’s exactly what Odyssey is too. Unity has the best combat. It looks clunky at times, but it’s the most challenging
I’m honestly really sad of how this franchise has ended. I buy AC games to play AC, but this didn’t felt like an assassins creed game at all. I wish we could go back to an Arab dude running through walls, go back to stealth, to a grounded historical setting, to being able to just stab one dude with your blade, and keep going till you find your objective.
Same. It doesnt need level gating and it was lame since syndicate. Its like they made a huge open world but DO NOT GO WHERE WE DONT WANT YOU TO YET or you have to stab the same henchman 78 times with a kukri before he one shots you with a jab. Like can they not make a more organic sense of progression and difficulty? Altair got new tools every mission. Enzio got new gear sporadically through the 2nd game. But it didnt matter who you were when the assassin got you alone in the crowd.
@@oh-not-the-bees7872 Couldn't agree more. The first moment I saw the assassinate feature was tied to damage I had to take a moment to reflect on that. That was when I realised "Oh, this isn't Assassin's Creed anymore." You're telling me I can sneak up behind this guy and stab him in the neck and he doesn't die? Where's the threat of being assassinated anymore if everyone is just damage sponges? During my playthrough of Odyssey I focused hard in the assassination tree so I could play Assassin's Creed, I couldn't believe how much grinding I had to do just to be able to one-shot enemies through stealth. Boy is it a kick in the cock when the game forces you into open conflict though. It's just easier to be a warrior and run into a camp and slaughter everyone, it's also faster. Morality means nothing, death no longer has weight, remember when Ezio had an entire character arc learning to show respect for your enemy in death? Ubisoft don't.
@@firefliesburntheworld I bought the game on sale. Immediately uninstalled it when it became apparent that you have to grind just to play the game stealthily as you used to. They want you to not be able to ghost camps easily, you'd never spend money at their in-game store.
Ubi needs to focus on quality over quantity when it comes to content. Give us a smaller world with more focused story Instead of 100 hour game give us 35-50 quality hours and instead of filling the maps with so many icons give us more interesting/verity
I couldn't end Unity because the campaign is long and the game has a shit ton of secondary missions, and i just got bored of it and can't uninstall it because its not a game i particularly dislike and want to end it but can't because it has so much shit
Filip Studený you can delete your save file, and start a new game that way. But yeah, the fact that you can’t start a new game in-game is really stupid.
Right on. I literally just left the same comment pretty much. It's just lazy developers banking off a name. If you pay attention enough you'll notice so many tombs, caves, and camps are just copy and pasted from region to region. Not all of them but a lot are. And I got so sick of always having animals chase me during travels. I wish they would just bring the series back to a city and make an amazing story. But nope. We'll end up getting super RPG Viking nonsense this year probably. Sucks for hardcore AC fans.
Part of why I love this game is my mother grew up on a Greek Island (Kypros), so playing this game felt like playing through an ancestral home (literally: I once spent an entire month in Kypros to take care of my late grandfather)
1:17:23 "these games need to evolve" No. Changing style entirely isn't "evolving". It is a lateral change. You can prefer the new thing, but it is fundamentally different, not "evolved"
As a looter-shooter style RPG it's a really enjoyable game, as an Assassin's Creed game it's an insult to the lore and long-term fans. At least we can all agree the First Blade DLC was a steaming pile of Phobos shit. What a big middle finger that was to the lore, an utter joke.
Toby Sweetman it’s not fun as a looter shooter or an rpg. The enemy scaling system makes the grind feel pointless and the dialogue sucks ruining the whole rpg aspect
what? That DLC did AC lore a favour. It reinstated the importance of Darius and the early Assassins after Origins shat all over them by blocking all connection between Bayek and them. Also, it managed to take the vengeance story, one which has been done to death in the AC franchise with no innovation, and apply a unique twist. If you think First Blade is a bad story, you probably have AC fatigue or you don't realise how much Origins fucked up the lore, leaving Odyssey to clean up the mess.
@@DougWIngate dude then you haven't played the older games everyone at this point agrees ac odyssey is the one that ruined the lore the apple of eden turns people into monsters in odyssey where was that when al mulaim (in the 1st ac) used the apple of eden and the leap of faith was taught to bayek by his father who in turn was going to teach it to khemu but since his son dies it is taught to the assassins which makes it more emotional and special to the assassins but odyssey completely ruins it since the leap of faith was orginally knew only by bayek and his father so how did darius knew something like that this is why odyssey ruined the lore not orgins and byek and aya were the first orginal assassins even in the ac lore they are said to be the creators of the creed
The funniest thing is the end where they tell us Aya is the descendant of (Odyssey player-character), meaning she is also the descendent of Pythagoras, Darius and Leonidas. She should have a very high concentration of Isu DNA, at least relative to other humans... so wheres her super powers? Why don’t pieces of Eden activate in her presence?
When I started this game I was excited. The visuals, the world, that story intro....it all hits you as they want it to. Then I saw this amazing tomb, then I saw another tomb, then another and another....and another, all exactly the same. Same with caves....there were literally 3 maybe 4 cave designs, sometimes filled with water, sometimes not. All the same. Same with the camps....same setup of tents and watch towers. I never felt the copy and paste in Death Stranding, which Luke assured was lazy design, like I felt here. I was into it the first 20-30 hours. Then it started to drag. Then fighting both sides made no sense regarding the story. Then I reached about 70-80 hours. Then all of a sudden.....it was over. I hadn’t even killed half the cult, which was the main antagonist of the game, and the story was over. WHAT? The final boss was a choice? I went back and hunted down all cult members. When I got to the head of the cult, I’m given an option to romance the cult leader???? WHAT???? Then I killed them in one swipe of my sword. The end. There are some epilogue missions with the historian, but they were unrewarding, and again a soft ending that felt....just not exciting. There are things that are good here, but A LOT bad. I have no idea how this is GOTY material. Its an impressive looking world, but once you are in it for 20 hours, it all looks the same. I’ve never played a game this long, seeing it through to the end, only to be left with such an unsatisfying conclusion. The DLCs were weird, as they seem to only muddy the AC lore, almost as if written by a person who doesn’t know the lore. I wanted to like this game, but again.....Ubisoft just aren’t very good at writing. We celebrate the mediocrity of Origins story, because we are so used to this kind of stuff. Its sad. This just didn’t work for me.
thank god, i thought everyone was insane in this comment section. so many people saying this is the best AC game and someone said it's "close to perfect", as someone who wasted 100+ hours on this "video game", thank you for speaking the truth.
Good news Assassin's are back The brotherhood system is back The hidden blade is back Social stealth is back The leveling up is gone The grinding is gone The writer of revelations and black flag is back The director of black flag and origins is back Assassin's creed is back
I really liked this game but then at the end when Kassandra shows up in the pant suit and tells the avocado toast girl she's the one that's gonna save them, it wrecked the whole story and I felt I wasted my time playing this dumb game
You mention at 33:00 or so that the value of human life has been stripped. I want to counter with the fact that AC Odyssey is chronologically before the first tenet of the Creed, “Stay your blade from the flesh of an innocent” was implemented. According to the wiki, this tenet was implemented by Bayek of Siwa after Gamilat, the leader of the Nabatean rebels in the Sinai Peninsula used the slaughter of innocents as martyrs to recruit more people to the cause. So it’s not a problem with narrative if Alexios/Kassandra kill countless people. They didn’t operate on the same rules as Ezio or Altaïr did.
That has nothing to do with it. The fact remains, both Kassandra and Alexios are inconsistent protagonists. Just like previous comment wrote, you can butcher an entire town, and on the next one you do their sidequests while choosing wholesome dialogue options, and helping everyone. And just when you're done with it you can go and kill everyone, nothing happens, no consequence, no notoriety, you might get some mercenaries after you, but with late-game builds you can almost one-shot them.
Luc Morgan They’re only inconsistent if you choose to play them that way. There’s no lore element forbidding either of them from massacring a town which is what I was trying to point out.
John Garcia well if that’s the case then doesn’t that mean your choices as Alexios/Kassandra are pointless because the main story makes them fight for the good of the Greek world yet you can massacre a town
It’s not about what “rules they operated on” it’s the fact that everyone you’re killing you’re just doing it... because. There’s no rhyme or reason to why you’re running around killing soldiers from either side of the conflict, assassinating random leaders who have no connection to the cult, starting battles where you arbitrarily choose either side. None of it makes sense, not even if they’re a misthios.
The actor for Kassandra brought a lot of charisma to a role that really needed it. If I hadn't gotten lucky with my choice of Kassandra, I probably would've stopped playing MUCH earlier
@@godzillazfriction To be fair the game is full of mediocre voice acting, I’m not saying Kassandra should win any prizes but… the gruntling of Alexios was…something else.
I really enjoyed AC:Odyssey! I treated this game like a tv show series. Each time I played it, I'm playing it like an episode. Play a few side missions and maybe a main mission and stop for a bit, go back to the game every few days.
I can't stand playing this game sometimes. I am still finishing the story at over 100 hours in. Have 1 last cultist to kill. My gripe is this beautiful open world is filled with utter nonsense. I'd rather have it just focus on story and side missions and leave out camps and upgrades and all this other bs. Give me an amazing story. I just played the other day and 10 straight question marks ended up being forts or camps. Then you try to sneakily take everyone down, a wild boar runs into the camp and you're forced to get into a major battle time after time after time. Complete trash. Ubisoft got lazy. That's not meaningful gameplay. That's dog shit. I would rather have a game that only focuses on a dense main area and a solid story.
Yea the animals have messed up many quests for me. Like when your following someone on a horse and a cat comes out of nowhere and kills you. Its kinda dumb
I dont think this was originally an assassins creed game, I think they made a big portion, had trouble with marketing, so they shoehorned in assassin stuff to make it sell.
I honestly feel like Alexios' character is amazing. I think the emotion is there, maybe not easy to tell like Kassandra but I definitely dont regret picking Alexios.
I recently bought this game. I understand the complaints some AC players have with the game parting with the traditional gameplay. But as a huge fan of Skyrim and open world games in general, I've gotta say that I really enjoy this game. This is as close to a "Perfect" game that I've played in recent memory.
@@vice2versa those people wasted their money and didn't even realize. this game is horribly designed and was made purely for monetary reasons without any love. this video is disgusting with how it portrays this soulless cash grab like it's an underrated gem.
Viking Horde I’ve played both. Odyssey is better in every way except the story and flying limbs. The gameplay specifically made it hard for me to keep going in Witcher 3. I wouldn’t mind all the errands if getting around wasn’t such a pain. Constantly having to craft, sell, store, and all the detective work. Just not my thing. I did enjoy the combat that didn’t involve magic. Hated riding the horse.
I love Odyssey, I stopped playing and recently picked it up again and I'm just so immersed in this world. Origins is an incredible game as well. I like the upgrade system better in that one and the world is so mysterious and incredibly detailed. However, Odyssey's storyline is more interesting to me IMO.
Great game honestly. Not hard but satisfying combat, land, naval is good but not as good as black flag, but that have you are a pirate so it makes sense. But yeah started replaying it to see all the dlc from last year and still a great game, easy but fun.
I love Odyssey too already at 80 hrs. But I did get overwhelmed with the map and all the quests and one point and quit too. But I came back and loved it even more
I enjoyed the game for the first 15-20 hours but soon after the gameplay and quests get WAY too repetitive. And this goes on for like 80 hours. Not everyone has the time or willpower for that.
I was just playing the game to see the historical locations and mythical beings etc. I did the same with Origins. I'm a big history fan so essentially my game consisted 30% playing, 70% checking stuff out. After that i saw everything to see, I played it for a while, but the gameplay was already too grindy and repetitive so I had no desire to continue.
I happened to LOVE Fate of Atlantis. It felt refreshing to have new objectives, namely the rebellion uprising in Elysium, hero hunting in the underworld, and even the simple peace keeping in Atlantis. No area seemed to overstay their welcome, new enemies were a treat, I LOVE the upgraded abilities, and I can’t say enough about the visuals. One of my favourite DLC’s I’ve ever purchased. Doesn’t hurt that I got the entire deluxe package, base game and DLC, for $25…
Playing thru this a second time on my Xbox series x on my lg oled cx 65in and just let me say graphically it’s amazing. 60fps Dolby vision hdr in 4K is awesome. Really brings to life the world they created and draws me in. I am thoroughly enjoying my Greek odyssey. Stopping to take in all the little moments. Going thru a hard time right now in my life and this escape is just what I need.
I’m more concerned about all the retcons to the lore. While I loved Origins, this started with that game and it running pretty “loose” with the lore. Odyssey was just a result of their new narrative direction with assassins creed RPGs.
Knights+Templars=Japan? I'm not especially familiar with the series but as a dev I have somewhat followed it for many years, and I feel like the development of the games has been testing the waters for branching out in more directions. Origins and Odyssey have pushed the boundaries enough that they can add Japan into the narrative without upsetting any but the most -anal retentive- -excessively fussy- hard to please (nailed it!) players. I can absolutely guarantee feudal Japan is on their short list. It looks like they are crossing Vikings off their list, and that will put Feudal Japan probably right up there with some Ancient Chinese Kung-Fu epic at the top of their list.
@@andrejurica6754 I think on their long list is a game set in the future, maybe a post apocalyptic game, and a full World War (i or ii) game. The way they talk about the Animus in Odyssey makes me think they will pull out all the stops soon. XD
I think your view on the 'Sickness in Kethalonia' feature was rather indulgent to Ubisoft. It was done well on that occasion, but i don't think the idea of long term cause and effect was ever really explored again in the game. It reeks of something that was made specifically to be exhibited at demo events, so that the marketing team could say "Look, even the smallest decisions in seemingly minor side-quests have consequences!"
I appreciate everything you said in that first section! I just finished the game and both dlcs and I gotta say, it might be my favorite in the franchise overall. I watched like 4 different channel reviews after finishing and these people couldn’t say one good thing about the game. I was like am I going crazy? Am I the only one who thoroughly enjoyed this game? Am I the only one who isn’t caught up in what this series was a decade ago vs. the new direction they’re going? It’s like they made all these changes cause critics and fanboys had all these complaints. Like this series is overall waaay better now! Back before AC 4 I felt like the story, (which was phenomenal) was the main reason I played the game. Like I could literally finish a game in 2-3 days because it wasn’t especially difficult to get through, nor were side stuff that Interesting. Now having so much content to explore and do really is turning me a fan all over again. I don’t understand when people say the game ended with Desmond because of all the mundane present day stuff that happened between AC4 and Syndicate. I really love this new story arc and delving into the mystery that’s been surrounding the Isu since they were introduced. Although they should probably work on Layla’s personality a bit. I was really liking her until her bizarre antics really started coming out in the Fate of Atlantis. Not sure if they want us to start turning against her now or what? Very mixed signals. Other than that, fantastic game and my favorite in the series.
Agreed. I just finished the game and all its DLC. I briefly played AC3 and Syndicate, but couldn't get into the games. Played this and was immediately hooked. I just started Origins and long for AC Odyssey. It's one of the best games I've ever played and I've been gaming for over 35 yvers. My second ever plantium trophy on PS4. I was sad when I finished it. Lol
People love to shit on the game, supposedly for abandoning assassin's creed tropes and plotlines. Well, Origins did that first, and those same people love that game. Origins was inferior in almost every way, except the setting and time period.
@@whodatninja439 i hate both origins and odyssey, and not because they're different from their prequels, but because they're awful games. ubisoft hasn't released a good game in like 8 years.
I disagree about Pheobe's death, one thing i've always loved about assassins creed games is how they change the players perspective as you play through the game. So Pheobe's death effects you the player which in turn effects Alexios/Kassandra.
When he shoved that mask with a knife in it into that mans face my 4 year old nephew was watching the tv intently and all i heard come from his mouth was, Oh shit... That shit made my day
i whole-heartedly believe that the reasons i enjoyed ac odyssey as much as i did are because i'd never played assassins creed beforehand and i also got it on sale at gamestop lmao
I am a stealth person and it felt great in Odyssey. They made it where you can be a warrior or Assassin. To me it was the perfect balance. I was one of those people that hated the thought of Assassin's Creed Orgins and wanted the old game style to return just judging it based off the videos i seen of the game play and Odyssey also. Once i played Orgins all that hate went out the window for both games. I love the new direction and had never played an RPG style game before, now i am hooked. The stealth in my opinion is done way better in Orgins and Odyssey than in past old Assassin Creed games. I have not played Valhalla yet but i am looking forward to it. Yes it is not true to Assassin's Creed of old but I still very much love the new direction and can care less about them staying true to Assassin's Creed tradition.
My main gripe with Odyssey is the fact that Atlantis was first introduced in Odyssey, and not Origins, despite Herodotos AND the Egyptians stating that Egypt was a colony of Atlantis. This is a well established fact that the world seems to forget.
f3De66 witcher 3 has filler content as well. Does that make it a chore, sure, but at least it’s tolerable to some degree. Some people actually prefer to not go through a game in just 10 hours.

@@Bckgroundguy101 Dude, there is like bandits camps everywhere in the witcher 3.. You're confusing quests and location completion, remember the dozens of smuggler caches you had in skellige ? Althought the quests in the witcher 3 have indeed a better writing in most cases.
@@SuperThomac It gives you a lot to do and a good narrative experience. Odyssey just gives you a lot to do, most of which is the same thing. The witchers camps usually had stories behind them too.
One of the greatest games of all time!!! I've been singing its praises for years and have gotten a lot of hate for it but it's nice to know that I'm not the only one
After playing Witcher 3, empty RPG games like this really do not compare. Almost every mission was a glorified fetch quest with no real choices or impact. There wasn't any memorable characters and the combat was a bit weird. The game itself is beautiful but the open world is almost completely empty. Side missions suck and the main storyline itself is mediocre at best.
The combat is def better than the witchers, memorable characters are an subjective thing,i can remember anyone besides the dwarf that i liked in witcher 3 since most of dialog was filled with „ive heard than one before“ and the witchers personality was set while you could heavily influence how kassandra acts, your choice might no mattered that much but you could make your character react how you want him too
@@SwaggerHarrystlyesminecrafter Im in a really interesting spot because I just quit Odyssey after reaching level 32, and began playing the Witcher 3 after buying it on a whim. Keep in mind, I'm someone who never played an AC game before this one, and could care less about how ubi abandoned their old story. In fact, I got it because I am a huge history nerd and wanted to experience ancient Greece in this game. After I reached the point in the game where you attempt to help the doctor, I couldn't play anymore. I was enamored with the world and the characters at first, but after over 20 hrs of gameplay, everything got extremely stale. The same variations of locations, lifeless npc's, no real consequences for interacting with the world, like siding with athens or sparta, killing civilians, etc, and even the way you could never influence Kassandra's character development beyond a certain point. It got to a point where the only thing I enjoyed in the game was the combat, more specifically the stealth, but eventually, the same routine way you interact with enemies (which in most cases are about 3 variations of soldier) made the combat boring too. This was made way worse when enemies would actually spot me, as the combat would devolve into me (a stealth archery build) running away and emptying about 40 arrows into the enemies while mashing the r2 button, with the same 3 combat arts interspersed within in the same way. Eventually, I couldn't even play the game for more than 10 minutes at a time, and ended up ultimately deleting it for storage. After playing the witcher, I don't understand how AC Odyssey is better than it in any respect. While in Odyssey, you tackle the same 3 or 4 variations of enemies over and over again, The Witcher, especially in higher difficulties, forces you to learn the weaknesses of the countless enemy types and plan very specific and detailed strategies for certain encounters. For example, you can brew potions for buffs, use bombs, or learn how to use magic to exploit an enemy weakness. But in Odyssey, enemies dont have weaknesses to exploit. They are one dimensional damage sponges that you either assassinate or stab and shoot countless times before they die. I believe the biggest difference between the two games for me was the side quests. I had so many times where the witcher's sidequests wowed me with just how much detail they contained. I even reloaded saves and tried different options for sidequests and I would sometimes even get completely different sets of content than before. But in Odyssey, the sidequests were often one dimentional "go here, kill/get this". While a lot of the witcher's sidequests are like this in essence, they have so much more detail and varied options that you simply can't compare the two. Its telling to me that I struggle to remember any sidequests from Odyssey beyond the Minotaur one, which is the only mythical creature quest I attempted because I was only level 32. Honestly, I want to know what makes people really like this game's gameplay, because after a long time, I simply couldn't have fun with the game anymore. I dont want to come across as a witcher elitist, I havent even finished the game, but I also can't understand people that say that the witcher is worse in any way beyond the visuals, since odyssey's world is so beautifully rendered. In short, Odyssey became incredibly boring after the novelty wore off, and I dont really believe it deserved to be a game of the year contender, especially with how the grindy gameplay with leveling walls insentivized microtransactions
Witcher 3 is not a game. Is a mythical book that you see and interact. Actually I beileve Witcher 3 is the worst game ever!!! It ruins every game you had played and especially everything you will play after. :(
The narrative of this game frustrated me so much. Especially in regards to Nikolaus and Stentor. I spared Nikolaus, but the world acted as if I had killed him. You never even tell anyone that you didn't kill him when other characters bring it up! This comes to a head way later when Stentor tries to kill you. In my version, Nikolaus just showed up and revealed that he still lives. There shouldn't be any tangible reason for Stentor to believe that Nikolaus is dead, but the game still treats this like a major reveal. There's a bunch of other stuff like this, and it really just rubs me the wrong way, because it makes me feel like my choices don't have a lot of weight.
Nikolaus calls you, after you spare him he basically disappears,so you are the last person to see him and you are a mercenary, they just conclude that you killed him;Because why would the grand spartan general just disappear?
I recently started replaying this game and began to look at it from a different perspective that made me really love the game, although I still believe it is heavily flawed due to repetitiveness and some design choices. I am absolutely biased because I am a major history buff and drooled when I heard about this game being in Ancient Greece. Having played and absolutely loved Origins, I came here playing it the same way only to be disappointed by the bad voice acting (dialogue in general half the time), odd design choices such as no shield, and of course the grindy repetitive quests you need to do to level up to continue the main quests. This game, for me at least, is best enjoyed as exploring the beautiful world, doing the REAL side quests (not the shitty formulaic ones from the boards like deliveries or kill 5 sharks), get progressively better loot, and blank the map in checkmarks by completing every location. Btw if you care about the war, just go with Sparta cuz i mean they literally won the war in real life
I was thinking of watching a movie this weekend but nothing worth watching playing in the theaters. Well thanks for solving the problem, Luke. Will watch the whole critique in one sitting!
Look, I get that game mechanics and game theory evolve with the trends and changing times. *But IF a game is going to diverge from lore and canon - then it shouldn't be included in "that" universe.* Ubisoft could have made Odyssey anything BUT an AC game, and I think they would have been just fine. Overall, it has ALWAYS been the story that keeps fans of the franchise coming back. Odyssey broke a lot of people's spirit about the series. Unity had issues - but they were not a product of it deviating from a meaningful story in the AC universe. I get that some didn't like Arno's personality - or that the game started out *very* buggy - but I honestly never heard the backlash against Unity for breaking lore like I have with Odyssey. *It could be that Odyssey has no Assassins or Hidden Ones.* The game-play with some of the mythological characters felt gratuitous - as if Ubisoft saw a trend with God of War and wanted to duplicate that success. 🤔 I would have been FAR happier with Odyssey if it had been marketed honestly as a Spartan mercenary game with a little bit of AC thrown in.... I blame myself for not picking up on the signals that Ubi was sending without actually being forthright that they just wanted to monetize a gaming trend in their own way. A unique IP or a spin-off IP would have been more honest.
Odyssey's open world is fantastic. One of the best open world I've ever played. I would give 10/10 only if it was more immersive. Hopefully AC Valhalla add more immersion into the game.
@@vice2versa They probably mean having something to do in each of the main cities like going into a place for a meal or a drink, sleeping, play a common greek game with someone, sit through a show in the stadium (like in RDR2)...maybe having a home of your own to return to to store your gear and rest or something. The game isn't lacking but these would of course be minor improvements.
@@khonsenmusic264AC Valhalla added lots immersive interaction but then added weapons and armor that completely breaks the timeline of the game!! And you have to balance out story with exploration. If you keep doing exploration than the game gets extremely boring. Story is not that great but it will keep you motivated to keep going!!
Get this game on sale. If you get the Gold Edition then it comes with all dlc plus AC3 "Remastered". You'll hate this as an AC fan. The games quality deminishes the deeper you get into it but its still enjoyable despite the grind and has many memorable moments that make it worth enduring.
It had the dlcs?! I was stupid enough to believe that it only had ac3 remastered and bought the special edition because it had armors included... which I don't even use...
54:46 the thing is, while yes it was super-impressive for the game to display that the player's choice could potentially have unforseen consequences and dramatic ramifications on the world as a whole, it feels a bit cheap and isn't REALLY representative of the player's potential impact at large. Yes, there are a few missions and side missions where choices can impact other characters associated with that specific quest, which can impact future quests, but nothing else the player does or chooses has that level of impact on the world, and every other time something even close to that comes up the game telegraphs the implications and potential consequences of those choices pretty heavily. Based upon how it's framed, the game fully expects the player to spare/save the family. So its a bit of manipulation to reinforce an element that really doesnt exist at any other time, outside of the main quest ones... which again, have pretty obious consequences and are much more localized. It feels like the whole plague in Kephellonia thing was just meant to give an illusion of continued player impact by displaying a singular instance of it, based off of the first choice you made in the game. Still, that was dope. One of the best moments of my first playthrough, but I was disappointed to see nothing else really had that level of impact on the larger world.
1:45:00 much more annoying is when you walk near a 'leader house' in the middle of a town you JUST conquested, and suddenly there's 20 captains and even civilians and chickens aggro-ed on you. WTF we were allies literally seconds ago!
That mission with the family that have a plague is one of the most interesting missions in the game the fact that your decisions actually matter that’s the one thing this game got right was your decisions actually matter
I loved this game. It was a great game. I’m just not comfy with calling it assassins creed. It’s more of a spinoff to me. Kinda like how Rouge One is for Star Wars.
The worst part about Odyssey was they the game loop was purposely designed to make you resort to micro transactions. You have a piece of armor you like? Well... If you wanna level it up with you you're gonna immediately run out of crafting supplies. Every story mission automatically pushed the level of the enemies for the next story mission like 15 levels above you, so if you were someone who enjoys RPGs and went around to do the sidequests you ended up grinding against basic enemies to level up 15x in order to be able to do the next mission. The RPG mechanics in the game are goofy as fuck.
I dont understand how people are obsessed with game's name.Who cares if its called assassin's creed.just imagine the name as odyssey.forget about the ac part.and play this beautiful game.
The moment you sell a game named "assassin's creed", you set up players to expect an assassin's creed experience... It's as if I sold you the Witcher 4 and it turns out it's an FPS. Nobody would've cared had the game been named just Odyssey... But it's Assassin's creed Odyssey so instead of blaming players, you should blame Ubisoft's marketing department

Odyssey is one of the best games I ever played, and I've played Witcher 3, Streets of Rage 2, Metal Gear Solid PS1, Ghost of Tsushima etc. Odyssey is absolutely beautiful, the story is brilliantly told, the acting performances are spot on, the set pieces and cut scenes are jaw dropping and the combat is very cool. All set it Ancient Greece. 9/10 for me.
Just started playing this game for the first time recently I only had about 80 hours in And I still can’t get enough. I’m not playing it as an assassin’s Creed game. I’m just playing it as a RPG with an assassin’s coat of paint on it and it is one of the best RPG’s. I played in a while. I can feel attention to detail every scene dialogue line.
RDR 2 is not a good example of a good honor system. You can massacre hundreds of innocent people and get the 'honorable' ending just by walking around St Dennis saying "howdy" to people.
Dude, I just figured it out. They’re just remaking the old assassin’s creed games just with an open world RPG style. If you think about it, assassin‘s creed one is somewhat similar to assassin‘s creed origins? It’s like the birthplace of what we know as assassin’s creed. Then assassin‘s creed odyssey is just the same as assassin‘s creed four, just with an open world RPG style. Assassin’s creed Valhalla reminds you of assassins Creed three; think about it, you’re big, you’re buff, you’re part of a tribe not that different from the Indians. You literally go to America in that game!
On your point of the main character killing thousands to save their family, I thought of this too. It reminded me of the definition of love in Vinland Saga. Love is discriminatory. There’s a lot of people out there that would do terrible things to other people to benefit their own loved ones. I don’t really have a point, but it was just a thought.
I don’t see how they haven’t focused on stealth since ac1 and 2 every entry on the series focused on the same type of stealth which was primarily social up until origins when they removed it.The series has always focused on stealth.
About fast travel - did you ignore the fact that you can also fast travel to your ship AND any port you've been near to? Being able to fast travel to ports doesn't force you to synchronize and activating them to be available happens from a very generous distance away (I often hadn't even been to the port itself). As a second point, you missing a synchro point is your own fault, you should never leave an area before going to them all. The game even incentivises this by having Ikaros' "ability" level up after a certain amount of synchros.
This game has a grasp on me and I hate it, I am 100% an AC purist and hate that this game has the name plastered on it… but I can’t stop coming back to it every year and idk why??? I think it just tickles the itches in my brain for mindless fun
I know this video is from 3 years ago BUT I have something to say about it. It does have a REAL ENDING with credit titles at the end. Once you have done everything in Greece you have to go back to Khephalonia and right at the harbor there's a purple square where you should go and talk to a woman, this will take you on vacation to the island of Korfu, where you need to complete all the quests (3) and find all the Ostrakas and the treasure. Once this is done you will find the REAL ENDING where the Credits appear and you can close the story. In fact don't skio the credits, just fast forward them and you'll get an extra cool cut scene.

This is an entry of that franchise that is remarkably different from the others, building on the changes implemented by Origins. Drawn out and repetitive. You just described every epic game ever made. That’s what we want out of games we like that have excellent gameplay.
If this was a solely Greek mythology game it would be incredible
Would be sooo much better and imagine meeting zeus, Poseidon and ares
Assassins Creed buys better :(
That’s what Ubisoft is doing with Gods and Monsters.
Well the name AssaSsins creed brings them a lot of money
They probably should've made this a separate entity from the Assassin's Creed franchise, but it probably wouldn't have gotten the sales without it though.
Taking the AC elements out would have ruined Odyssey. I spend 90% of my time assassinating and sneaking around in Odyssey. No way that could have stayed in the game if they took the AC title away. It basically would have been For Honor or Ryse, both terrible games. Thank goodness you had nothing to do with the making of this game, no offense lol.
We do need a grand epic game set in ancient Greece. Especially one that works within it's native mythology, as opposed to KILLING IT! XD
thegreatcalvinio
I agree Ac Odyssey should have been an open world RPG set in Ancient Greece embracing the mythology that comes behind it.
Dunno what you guys are talking about because AC Odyysey did do it's own thing. They used the AC world to justify their own ideas of magic and fantasy
my biggest problem were the grind and the it being and assassin's creed game. I feel it was being held back because of all the previous lore and was better of being a game about greek myths and not have to worry about the first civ stuff.
yeah first 10 level grind is fucking bullshit... i got the game early... and let just said... i never replay the game without new game+
Agreed. Being set in the real world seriously limits how much cool stuff you can have in an RPG. It makes the cool Shockwave abilities and stuff stand out way worse too.

I’m playing it slowly enjoying it and exploring no rush, 124 hours already with level 45 and only 29% of the main story done, the Gameplay is awesome, looking to play also the Assassin’s Origins just for the Ancient Egypt after I finish odyssey

@@stepkickking9868 It has better combat than other AC games. BF, Rogue, and AC3 were literally 2 buttons.
1:17:23 "these games need to evolve"
No.
I don’t really care for the ac story so I enjoyed the randomness of both dlcs
I enjoy this game the most when I don't think about it being an assassin's creed game.
I got the Atlantis ending, halfway through the main story. Was kind of weird and awkward moving forward

Am I the only one who listened to the AC Origins soundtrack extensively, underneath his voice?
I noticed it in an instance. Cant miss the track.
*odyssey
John Garcia its the facit that kassandrs doesnt have a moral compas, she could kill a town one day and the other be nice to a child
Exactly, Alexios voice as a bad guy was great, now.. to listen him all the time as a protagonist was as scratching a chalkboard.

You make the best critiques.. When I don't want just a 5 minute ign review. I come to your channel and I've never been disappointed

Eh?
The game was fun for a while but eventually the grind got to be too much. I might go back to it at some point.

f3De66 witcher 3 has filler content as well. Does that make it a chore, sure, but at least it’s tolerable to some degree. Some people actually prefer to not go through a game in just 10 hours.

@@jgsource552 nah most of the side quests if not all in witcher 3 were heavily narrative driven while in this its fort driven
I thought it was pretty clear that Phoebe didn’t accidentally end up in Athens. The cult leader sent for her in order to use her to get closer to us.
I absolutely loved this game, I see it more as an ancient Greek rpg than an assassin's creed game
Adam Mendez agreed. The Witcher is the best rpg game of all time. Other games need to step it up or don’t be RPG!!!
@The Honorable Marik Ishtar i would say only Baron's quest line is far better then the two dlc's that ubisoft released for odyssey..
I killed him, what i found weird is nobody else cared that i murdered a spartan general.
man i love your devotion to the game and your channel. i hope you get happiness out of this stuff.

*But IF a game is going to diverge from lore and canon - then it shouldn't be included in "that" universe.*
Ubisoft could have made Odyssey anything BUT an AC game, and I think they would have been just fine.
Yea beautiful world but feels empty and the city is boring
what are some examples of immersion that you wanted to see more of?
How did that comment age for you?
Did you find the immersive experience you were looking for?
Yes I agree the story and gameplay loop started this harsh down turn at some point.
It had the dlcs?!
I was stupid enough to believe that it only had ac3 remastered and bought the special edition because it had armors included... which I don't even use...
The Cyclops eye story is still hilarious, especially the way Kassandra delivers the lines xD
I love these 3 hour long vids of analyzing games....I'm also playing Odyssey at the moment and loving it so far!
That mission with the family that have a plague is one of the most interesting missions in the game the fact that your decisions actually matter that’s the one thing this game got right was your decisions actually matter
Fun fact: In this game there is almost zero auto camera. That's mostly why it never feels like you're fighting the controller.
I loved this game. It was a great game. I’m just not comfy with calling it assassins creed. It’s more of a spinoff to me. Kinda like how Rouge One is for Star Wars.
I poured over 600 hours into this game I absolutely loved it I also put 400 houra in origins and 120 hours into valhalla
Same. It's an amazing rpg

Man i wish i could play this for the first time again
A game that doesnt include crouching.totally focused on stealth

Cheers
thats from a free dlc released like last year i think (4 years after the game)
