First off.. great great video luke.. i enjoy your stuff. But this was the one.. Odin couldn't kill Tyr. Cause otherwise he couldn't take his form. That is why he has all the other prisoners as well. I totally disagree with the crater being locked away. After birgir jumped off the ship They had that conversation about he can't be dead. Soon as we reach land again 2 sec later His dogg was running next to atreaus. And he said father I think he is trying to tell us something. And I straight jump into that and found the crater. It's really not locked behind end credit They actually spell it out for you and almost push you into it. Like they do other times saying. Well we can explore or do you want to continue. Except this time atreaus yells at you and runs after the dogg I guess most didn't see, hear or pay attention. Which it not an issue. But it really isn't locked
One quick note which I loved. When I saw the crater and saw that frozen lightning bolt. I remember Thor. He said in the beginning. The first fight. Before anything even started.. he said... hmm.. that seems familiar. And kratos says..what?? And Thor says. Forget it and starts to fight.. And then in the crater you learn about the story that went down with Thor and Faye.. that's just crazy 2me.. loved it
that sindri arc killed me. He was always this hygiene guy with gloves everything. Always complaining about it. And now he didn't gave two effs.. blood everywhere. Dirty. Making that sword with no gloves. Hair all over the place. You could see. He snapped. He lost it. He is broken.
NEVER cried during any movie or videogame but THAT part hit hard; especially after playing both games back to back. Another instant was when Atreus f**ks up and he goes to Sindri's house where Kratos asks him "What are you?" and Atreus hugs him
Fun fact: There is actually an in-game explanation of why Kratos lost all his armor and the Levaithan Axe and Chaos Blades were downgraded, Brok says at one point that Fimbulwinter wears down all things including objects, and that explains why everything was reset to zero.
and one of the dwarfs asks "what about all of those armors that i made you?" to which kratos replies "i used them". "will you take better care of these ones?" "no"
They even explain the loss of magic. They talk about how Fimbulwinter drained the magic from them, and when you start seeing wisps, wights, and phantoms, Freya even comments saying that all the magic drained from them had to go somewhere
I love the detail that, while for most boss finishers you have to press a button to finish them, for Heimdall's final hit you don't, it just automatically goes into the cutscene, almost like Kratos is not actively thinking, but going on his old instincts
It could be that OR the fact that Heimdall's stun meter is permanently full . Meaning there's no stun grab option so it just starts the finisher automatically. I like your explanation better tho
@@johndodo2062I think he’s gonna come back. He vanished when he died just like Athena did when she ascended to the higher existence. Witch you could just think nothing of but magni’s body didn’t vanish neither did bulders and he was Thor’s brother. I feel like they did that on purpose to bring him back.
@@johnstair3555 could be but he was also killed by the All-Father who controls Valhalla and the afterlife. Maybe for his betrayal he sentenced him to a permanent death?
For me I don't always do side missions and usually save them for the end game but I did the first Alfheim jelly fish mission and found out Kratos was doing all this just to spend time with Atreus I did every side mission I could with him because after 5 GoW games I am so attached to Kratos and almost always wanted to do what he did so when he wanted to spend time with his son, so did I.
I did it with freya. Both her and mimir were telling kratos that Loki would’ve loved doing this with him. After it was over he was eager to tell Loki about it.
This quest "For Vanaheim" can actually be done at right about half to three quarters of the game story. Right after killing Heimdall, at least that is the way it was for me
Yeah I went to the crater with atreus as soon as it became available and did most of it before leaving. I think I went out to do some cleanup and some berserkers in some other realms, and then I went back again and cleaned it all up for good before starting the endgame story missions.
I got to the entrance of the crater as soon as I was able to during the story. I looked around and found nothing so I thought maybe there's gonna be a fight in here later on. And again later during the story. And then AFTER the story I got back there and noticed the point where you can grapple onto and found the rest of Vanaheim. I was pretty pissed at myself for how blind I was.
Also the compass doesn't tell you the general direction of your final destination. It leads you to the next turn you need to make. That's why it swings so fast. If you think about it that way, the compass becomes second nature and combined with the map, it's actually really easy to find things. Especially if it's your second or third time through the game
Exactly. I don't know what's "broken" about it. You have to see it like a gps system, that tells you "go straight ahead" until you reach a crossroad, where you have to go left and then it tells you to go left. It's a really simple and easy to follow system.
@@nickraiser9127 I dont know if you have played the first game recently (2018), but in this game the compass is worse than it was in the first. It's a minor detail, but the compass can definitely glitch sometimes
@@Daan0927 I have played God of War 2018 just a few weeks before Ragnarök but I have to be so honest to admit, that I just don't use the compass a lot. I'm someone who opens the map quite often, when looking for something and the compass is just a little bonus for me. And also I played most of the game with all HUD elements off and only turned the compass on, when I really needed it. So obviously my experience will be different from someone who uses the compass a lot more.
I liked it when it worked, but more than a few times it pointed directly at the destination and not where to take the turns. Guess they will fix it, if they haven't already.
So, in the secret shrines Tyr’s name isn’t actually mentioned. Atreus saw the spear and assumed it was referring to Tyr since Tyr was always depicted with one. When Kratos got the Draupnir Spear I immediately thought the prophecy was about Kratos leading the charge at Ragnarok, not Tyr. And then he did. Those crafty giants…
3:55:05 YES there is, if you go to the middle area you’ll see various rune combinations that lead to the different final challenges; and if you look at the base challenge rooms each of those have a rune on them. Once you complete a final challenge the runes associated with that challenge in the main arena will “turn off”
The reason kratos said to start training after fenrir dies is highlighted when Atreus disappears. If you search for him behind the house mimir will ask why you’re checking the training grounds and kratos will say Atreus was grieving and mimir will respond “oh kratos, I know you’re trying”. This speaks to how kratos handled grief and how also shows throughout the game that shutting it out and training hasn’t helped him, even with Faye he still grieves. Also Faye’s scenes are crucial to kratos’ development in changing his nature and wanting to keep living for those around him.
I love the Faye scenes. It's a shame people bitch about them, saying that they're not important, or that Faye was a boring character, blah, blah, blah, but that just goes to show they don't understand Kratos has a character and want him to be the way he was during the OG trilogy. The final vision with Faye was so moving, I actually shed a tear at the end.
@@marywilcox3102 even her other quote “ to grieve deeply is to have loved fully” is so good, and don’t worry I’m a softie so I cry at like every deep scene 😭😂
@@javierlopez3756 You're not afraid to have emotions. So many people who hate this game don't have emotions or empathy. And, like you, I cry if something moves me, and this game did that on a lot of occasions.
There actually is an in-game que for the muspellheim challenges! Each of the sub arenas has a letter on the sword (F, R and N) and in the main arena on the floor, there are shining letter combinations that you haven't completed yet, such as FN, FR, and so on...
Honestly if I started counting all the errors like this in the video I'd be here all day. I was fairly disappointed in this review, despite the length.
@@MrWhygodwhy yeah, no disrespect to Luke, he is a dedicated guy in making these videos, it's just a shame that many of his arguments are actually just objectively wrong because he didn't notice something or is just looking at it the wrong way. This happened with his AC Valhalla and Horizon Forbidden West reviews as well. It's ok to be wrong, we're all human, but sometimes we deserved an "errata" video specially in cases like HFW where some of those things he thought were wrongfully done were so detrimental to the overall opinion on the game.
A few quick things I'd like to throw in - The Vanaheim side quest in the Crater doesn't only unlock in the post-game. It unlocks right after we save Freyr in the forest chase, get the paper boat and prepare to leave the realm. The camp dog runs off and we can chase after her with Atreus, the quest explicitly appears right at that moment. There's also bespoke dialogue and storytelling between Kratos and his son there. - The ability to disable skills was kinda useful to disable the Axe heavy finisher combo (R1 → R1 → R1 → R2). When the skill is equipped, the combo just ends right there, but without it you can do an R2 heavy attack launcher and keep it going longer. For this reason I don't buy the skill in the 2018 game at all, and almost always keep it disabled in this one. - I found Spartan Rage → Valor (the healing one) very useful in the most difficult optional boss fights (e.g. Valkyrie Queen and the dead king and his entourage). Other rage attacks don't do a lot of damage to bosses and don't heal that much anyway, so I used it as a high risk high reward move. Activating at the exact moment of an attack heals you even more, and it works even with red/blue circle attacks, and also if you're stun locked in a combo or staggered after a bad parry. Optional bosses are much less forgiving: if you get caught in a combo, you often don't have time to recover for a dodge or parry, unlike with story bosses. So Valor is basically a big balls Uno reverse card when you need to counter a dangerous attack and heal at the same time. - About the mural where Atreus cradles dead Kratos. I think this plays in to the Norns' idea of everyone being predictable, which enables them to see the future. For me, the moment in Asgard where Kratos decides to “open your heard to their suffering”, he basically diverts his fate, because he's being unpredictable in that moment, and goes against everyone's (even the Norns') idea of who he is as a godkiller and destroyer. If they kept going as they were, rampaging through Asgard, I believe he might've ended up dead just as foretold. Love going to sleep, doing dishes or cleaning up at home to these long format videos, keep 'em coming!
I paired the valor rage with "sol's courage" cuirass which makes your rage give you bonus melee damage, as well as act as a secondary health bar. On top of that, the relic that restores rage, and the draupnir spear handle that restores rage on a R3 - grab to stun finisher. THEN the greater regeneration enchantment for the amulet. It was a tanky vitality build with a back up store of health that lets you deal extra damage, whenever my rage was full, I'd use valor to convert the rage to my health pool, then pop the relic to restore the rage, meanwhile the regen enchantment is just puttering away constantly. Was pretty powerful
One of my favorite lines in the game was when I did a stun kill on one of the werewolf things and Brok just says “Welp that will haunt my dreams”. I laughed for a solid minute straight and everytime I run into one of those things I think about him and that line
They did NOT have to kill Brok man. I’m so actually sad IRL about that. Though to be fair, my wife died a while back and I have children to raise alone, so after fey gave her dialogue in the dream to Kratos I’ve been an absolute wreck anyways. So poignant. Can’t believe a video game made me cry for the first time in years.
I'm a little confused by the critique that Atreus should tell Kratos about Ironwood and what happened there. Angrboda literally told Atreus that he couldn't tell anyone about Ironwood, even his father, because Odin could find out about it and then annihilate whatever life was still in Jotunheim. And considering what ends up happening with Týr, it's clearly for the best that Atreus kept his cards close to his vest.
Also Brok didn't have *no* soul, he was just missing like 1/4 of his. We've already seen what happens to living beings who have their sould removed, and that level of existence is much more dire than Brok's was.
I feel it depends. Atreus could have done it in a way that allowed his father and him to only know. If he communicated with him. Kratos wouldn’t have leaked that information easily because of the circumstances. The main reason why Atreus didn’t tell story wise is to make Kratos think he went to Asgard as thus kickstart the mask plot. All he had to do was tell Kratos that he wanted to tell him something in private went out to the middle of nowhere with no one else and tell him about it. Heck telling Tyr would also add to the whole thing about how Atreus messed up in terms of the story while providing more of a show of how vile and petty Odin is. Like imagine what would have happened if the way Odin was revealed was because he was too hasty with attacking Ironwood which tips Atreus off that there is a spy in their midst leading to Odin being found out. Then Atreus has to recognise how dangerous his recklessness and naivety is to others
something else you didn't seem to get: the snake that we gave a soul to actually is jormungandr. there is a line of dialog that goes something like "the snake has grown a lot". that's why jormungandr recognizes atreus in the first game
1:21:15 A cool thing to add about the device they're using. In the first game, towards the end when Brok & Sindri took Mimir's head to "take some measurements" they were most likely building this. Don't know if this is common knowledge but they never really outright said that these two moments were connected so I thought I'd share
Luke, for your comment at 1:12:13 " Disabling skills", it's actually extraordinarily useful. Playing on GMGOW some of the enemies one or two shot you, for some bosses I needed to take out some moves I'd use to interrupt attacks because they'd leave me too vulnerable, and instead of blaming the game for my mistake, I'd just disable attacks I shouldn't use. I'm looking at GNA and two berserkers for this offense!
Yeah, I disabled the axe return skill that brings the axe back to you while you're punching enemies with bare fists if you press L1 and R1 at the same time because it would always trigger when I tried to block enemy attacks and go back to dealing stun damage using my fists, and then I'd have to manually unequip the axe again, breaking my flow.
@Matt Gibson I've had that happen a couple times when dodging attacks on GMGOW, but I just leave it active because I find all the dodge forward moves so useful as gap closers. I hate how it's permanently disabled bare-handed, when we had agile strike in the 1st game
Two little details I found in my replay: 1. Fenry's soul is split into 4 when Atreus cast his spell and you can see one part goes to the knife 2. If you stick around a little longer before leaving Odin's office after the first mask mission, you will see Odin speaking with one of his ravens and then teleports with the ravens. The next cut scene is of Kratos waking up and he sees Tyr is cooking
There’s this thing they do with Kratos, which you can see Judge do in an interview where he talks about his kids, and it’s a lower lip quiver of a strong man being overwhelmed by emotion but struggling to contain it. Everything about Kratos’ moments is underplayed and it works so damn well as not many video games are even confident enough to even attempt that kind of subtlety but also as an evolution of a man who was so ruled by his emotions trying to control them while still feeling them just as strongly. It’s honestly masterful character writing, as well as amazing acting from Judge and top tier animation. I honestly now regard Kratos as the best, most compelling video game character of all time. Joel and Arthur are great, but Kratos is on another level, with a continuous arc spanning all the way back to 2005.
I like the call back in the beginning where in the previous game Kratos tried to hide his scars on his arms from Atreus and keep it a secret, then in this one Atreus turned to hide his back to keep the secret of the little ball he had which was later found out held souls and was a representation of him wanting to save his dad from inevitable demise..
For the Muspelheim challenges you don't need to manually keep track of the combinations you did. In the main arena where you fight the final challenges there are all runes combination on the ground (see 03:55:48). Once you complete a combination the runes changes color from blue to gray. It's not very clear but it's there!
20:02 It's so weird that you would have such a pertinent memory of Snow Dogs considering that one of the main characters in the film is played by none other than Christopher Judge!
The movie you are referring to with the dentist and the huskies is called snow dogs. I was obsessed with that movie as a kid. I'll always remember the main characters obsession with blue cheese
It should be added that Brock actually explains why the weapons broke down from what they were in the first game which was because of fimbul winter it breaks down all types of metals (magical and not) and because his weapons weren’t being kept up in shape because he wasn’t seeing brock and sindri they slowly lost all of there properties throughout the 3 years they’ve been training
@@emmanuelhernandez3200 I honestly think it’s because he was using them throughout the two years and they were never being kept up like they were in the first and second game, other than that I honestly think it’s just for gameplay lmao
Brok's theme that plays throughout the game when he is on screen, which eventually gets the full orchestral treatment during his viking funeral had me balling like a baby.
2:19:00 the asgard subversion worked incredibly well because of how well it fits everything else that's been set up in the narrative. the marvel interpretation would've been a terrible fit for this game's universe given everything we've learned about Odin and the Aesir. I'm glad the devs went with this take, especially since they've made it plenty clear that they can absolutely do the gaudy over-the-top majestic otherworldly setting with Alfheim, so you know it isn't a matter of them going with something tamer bc of budgetary limitations or imaginative scope.
it would've been fine, really shows the praise is solely by a lack of knowledge beyond marvel versions and they think this is more complex when it isn't
I kind of understand what Luke was feeling, I think the developers intended this especially through Heimdall's dialogue when we reach Odin's lodge. Knowing how Marvel's version looks when I saw the other side of the wall my first thoughts were Vikings and Kattegat.
You can actually get to the crater as soon as you help get Freyr back to camp. Just follow the dog and it takes you to the point where you can use Freyrs boat. I was blown away when I saw even more of that realm. Loved this game
58:59 Even this 4th wall break has some lore behind it. One of the things that Mjolnir can do, according to Norse mythology, is bring goats back to life. And since Kratos is the GOAT...
Man that Brok part really made tear up when Kartos asked for his blessing wow... and the Odin reveal and Sindrei broken moment made it so much hurt so much
3:59:49 the reason Tyr is alive is cuz Odin needs the person alive to take the form of them. One of the devs said that when you enter svartleheim (?) there’s a dwarf that’s spits on you from a bridge, and that dwarf is actually Odin in disguise, and in the prison you can find that dwarf in a cell, freshly dead. Also when you find tyr out in the world after you free him, apparently he’s giving hints toward the next game with his movements, again according to the devs.
Yes! The hints were eluded to by Eric Williams on the IGN Beyond spoilercast. My guess based on this clue is that Hindu is next on the docket, but I'm sure we'll have to wait 4+ years to find out.
This guy really blew off Lunda's armor without actually knowing how good it is. That armor set melts through everything in the game on the hardest difficultly with the right build; you couldn't go anywhere without seeing meta builds for it during launch week.
I thought atreus kept ironwood a secret because angrboda asked him to. She said that if anyone knew about it, odin would learn about it and destroy it and her.
The most chilling part of the game is right here... 3:09:49 The first time we ever see Sindri or Brok phase through the realms... It's so unnerving. Just as much as the characters say it is when they do it to surprise them. It really is an eerie way to teleport... Without sound, without samatic components, it just happens........ Love this. Also Luke no talk about Sindri and the BEST cutscenes in this game? The one at Tyrs temple?
In regards to Tyr being alive, I think in Norse mythology Odin can only take the form of someone who’s still alive, so he could not have taken his form if Tyr were to be dead. That’s why it was so cool to find in in the end and to see him around the realms afterwards
I know it's insane I feel myself actively trying to be better and get a grip on my anger because of this game. I've never had an experience with a game like this and I play a lot of games
I can’t believe Luke didn’t talk about that moment in Alfheim when Kratos hears the singing of his wife from Greece in the portal or whatever it is. I thought that was a really great moment.
Hm, it wasn't the singing of his first wife, it music playing was Faye's - Kratos second wife, Atreus' mother - theme. But yeah, it was a great moment. I felt a bit emotional during that bit. Then again, I cried several times while playing this game. God, what a masterpiece!
The movie you were talking about is called Snow Dogs with Cuba Gooding JR. Funny enough, the intro to the movie where he's a kid being shown how to do dentistry by his father, is played BY CHRISTOPHER JUDGE of all people.
took me a few days but i got through this video, glad that i did, always nice to see someone else share the same enthusiasm for a form a media that you like.
4:08:12 this is also untrure. This side quest is not locked until the end game. I went here with atreus immediately after the first flying boat section. This is because the point It unlocks is when that traveler companion of freyr's jumps out of the boat because they go to look for him immediately.... it would be weird if they waited until the end of the game to find him. Also it does not unlock before this point because there is no reason for Kratos to go here in the story so that whole "sacrifice" was to give him a reason to travel to this new area. Again easy to miss if you don't wander into the right place but I happend to find it almost immediately.
Umm… the crater isn’t end game content. It is unlocked right after the mission where you rescue Freyr. The game draws significant attention to it with the dog barking at you and leading you to it. I would be surprised if players don’t find this. You’d have to purposefully ignore it.
1:11:40 in the last game, throwing your axe and recalling it to do the twirl move with the same button combo effed me over more than it ever helped, so being able to disable that while keeping the heavy version of the move was a huge improvement for me
I'm a bit late to the party on this one, but I want to say something about the point of Asgard feeling underwhelming. While I too initially felt underwhelmed seeing Asgard as a relatively small village, I soon came to realize that was the whole point. To be the antithesis of what we were expecting. Heimdall said it best "real power does not need to flaunt" and that's exactly right. You would expect, with Odin being this incredibly powerful God with so many connections, having his thumb in almost everything civilization, his City would be more akin to the movies. A golden palace surrounded by towers, massive armys, gorgeous artifacts. But that would go against Odin's real power, his facade. As a charismatic, humble leader. Odin doesn't have any interest in material value or flaunting his strength, he only cares about controlling everything. And the way he does that is by potraying himself as a kindly old gentlemen, and then literally or figuratively stabbing whoever he needs to in the back. His humble facade as a kind hearted old man wouldn't work so well if he was flexing golden towers showcasing his spoils of manipulating everyone around him. I think its much more believable that Atreus still somehow falls for Odin's facade, if we, the player, are taken aback by how conservative he and Asgard is. Odin doesn't need to show off his strength, because his unassuming persona is his greatest strength, even against those who know the depths of his depravity. And that is reflected in Asgard's world design
Couldn't be better timing. Just finished the story yesterday, and really need a shoulder to cry over. Awesome work dude, looking forward to going through this over the next week
A note on what you expected of Asgard inside the walls/gladsheim, as a swede with an interest in our mythology, this was actually really on point for what I expected it to look like :)
50 hours in and I’m still not done work the main story, it’s crazy how it just keeps giving you more side content to do. Plus the combat is just so fucking good you really “feel” like the god of war lmao. And idk how my ps4 hasn’t overheated from how good the graphics look even on old gen. 10/10
That questline in the crater opens up right after you rescue Fenrir. I did it with Atreus! I would be very interested to hear how different the dialogue is if you explore it with Freya instead! Remember when you said "this guy jumps off the boat"? 😂 That's when it unlocks.
Wtf... you can go to the crater right after the mission you kill Heimdall Luke. Not sure how you didn't notice that. They give you that quest at Freyers camp.
I feel like this game hits different if you're a parent. I resonated with a lot of the emotional beats Kratos experienced in this game, and the first game. I feel like that was intentional, and it definitely made me feel more connected to the characters.
I think it's great, as the kids who grew up playing god of war god older, we needed a more mature story Relevant to our lives and where we are. Vengeful killing of gods is cool and all as a young teenager and through those teenage years, but as a dude in his mid 20s, I don't need that anymore. That's honestly not the life lessons I need to be taking. Growing up with Kratos, and the stories maturing with it was the best thing Santa Monica has done. I can't even express how much these stories mean to me. I wouldn't have had it any other way.
I think it was when kratos told Atreus to open his heart that was when fate was broken, due to it being so out of character for kratos. Unpredictable Also this is sort of proven, at least that fate was broken, as in the last mural the last scene was originally Thor (that giant 3d figure) standing over a dead kratos, however angrboda painted over it to show kratos alive and being worshipped
The reveal of fae was so awesome. That they actually showed her. It just showed her so strong and mysterious and beautiful. Like a guiding goddess but real. Her character made her feel so real. Before she was this infinite giantess. I though she was awesome, disarming, real. Excellently done.
30:50: There is the option to change the turn around to pressing L3 whilst pushing back on the stick. Although, not gonna lie it didn't work well for me personally as I would constantly accidentally press it in the heat of battle causing more harm than good for me. So I ended sticking with the default- but the option is here for people that want it.
Hey Luke! If you go back and watch the Heimdall fight Kratos does the same attack the second and third time anticipating Heimdall to block with his “new” bracer and Kratos grabs it and lands that first blow…epic
Muspelheim trials *do* keep track of your combinations. Choose from the available runes on the ground around the Central (final) sword. Grapple up to find the corresponding rune on the challenge sword of your choice. Blue runes grey out as completed. Complete one, then the next one you need to complete will have one rune unlit and one rune lit within the ground marker circle. Edit: noticed other commenters explained this already
He says the Nornir are largely unhelpful and kind of rude but the only thing I could think was that he hasn't met the Greek Fates. I was hoping he would piece apart the interaction with them but he quickly glosses over it even though it's the only time you see them in the game.
It was for me, simply the best multi-media (books, TV, Movies, games) experience of my life. My expectations were high, it blew them all away. Kratos finding his "Path", one that makes him more a god of peace than a violent God of War was incredible.
Didn’t Sindri already tell Atreus about Brok dying before the Draupnir section? I could’ve sworn I already knew that backstory before the section with Kratos
Yes, sindri tells atreus in one of the midgard atreus sections. That was supposed to act as foreshadowing. Its why sindri didnt want Brok to meet the Lady, as it was the only way Brok would find out on his own.
Feel like you brushed over the conversation between kratos and atreus in helheim a bit. Watching a man like kratos knowing what hes done and been through show weakness in front of his son was powerful, and atreus realizing he was also taking care of his dad in. Way the entire time. Made me ball like a baby
3:59:00 There is actually a reason for Tyr being alive, and it's that Odin needed to keep people alive to assume their forms, so if you notice the other cells of the prisons, it's filled with creatures and characters you've seen throughout the game, and I think this detail adds yet another layer of despicableness to Odins personality. All this time he could've embodied any creature and been spying on you that way as well. I agree the discovery of the real Tyr is kind of underwhelming, and I was hoping he had a somewhat different vibe than when Odin impersonated him. You can actually travel to the nine realms after freeing him and seeing him 'meditate' in random locations. He still seems broken and sad. Not like the Tyr we head in the stories of the previous game. But not every character needs to have redemption I guess.
The moment where Kratos kills Heimdall actually shocked me. That was the REAL god of war that came out of him for that minute. It made me realize exactly how much he holds back.
The Final Muspelheim challenges at the end are not that confusing - each sword in the "offshoot rooms" has a rune on it, and you can see the combinations of runes needed for each final challenge lit up on the floor of the big arena. But yes, they could have definitely communicated that more clearly
I grew up with God of War, I loved Kratos, but I didn’t want this series. I didn’t think he deserved a new series, let alone redemption. But they really pulled it off. Shit, I can’t believe Kratos made me cry.
Actually i did manage to reach the crater before completing the main game. It is available to you after the death of heimdal (I assume if you are watching this vid you have played the game), so i dont know if thats a fair critic. It wasn't locked behind the endgame (Or i just misinterpreted what you meant or said) After writing this comment i may have tought that by endgame you meant the later parts of the story instead of AFTER the end of the game, if so myb
Regarding the muspelheim trials, you can track which you’ve done in game. The places where the chests will show up, have runes on them. Those runes correspond to the runes you can find in the challenge rooms on the sword things.
Did you find the wolf's grave in the beginning of the game? When Kratos is searching for Atreus, the grave can be found resulting in dialogue. Every play through I've watched people never came across it.
@@azulruina I will try to describe where it is. Go to the two wolves. Turn and face the fence. As you walk to the fence, look down on the left side. It is against the rocky wall. Or start at the fence and turn around and look down on your right side. There is a mound of dirt and either Mimir or Kratos will say, this must be where he buried Fenrir. In mission anyway.
My biggest pet peave was the war. I felt like the battle really wasn’t focused on. Ya ya I get we were coming to the climax and probably had a time crunch but think about the potential we could of had, I mean in 2018 all we hear is Thor and the snakes legendary battle. How nice would it have been to see them fight in the backround or have little cutscenes that because of there battle opens up pathways you can go through during your pursuit to Odin. There should have been more danger with the main characters instead of sending them off screen to help. I felt like the Odin felt was really lackluster tbh and The wasted potential that was within could have been even better and dramatic rather than a really crappy 3 on 1 with a square button and Odin ranting. To me his fight was the easiest in the entire game and I played on hard but that’s just me. This is my opinion but I rather had them end the game preparing the war while finding some weakness for Odin then set up the next game to focus on the war and post war rather than to me it took me 48 min to complete the entire war segment including thb

If you want to figure out which challenges you've done in Muspelheim just look at the ground where the runes are
First off.. great great video luke.. i enjoy your stuff. But this was the one.. Odin couldn't kill Tyr. Cause otherwise he couldn't take his form. That is why he has all the other prisoners as well.
I totally disagree with the crater being locked away.
After birgir jumped off the ship
They had that conversation about he can't be dead.
Soon as we reach land again 2 sec later His dogg was running next to atreaus. And he said father I think he is trying to tell us something. And I straight jump into that and found the crater. It's really not locked behind end credit
They actually spell it out for you and almost push you into it. Like they do other times saying. Well we can explore or do you want to continue. Except this time atreaus yells at you and runs after the dogg
I guess most didn't see, hear or pay attention. Which it not an issue. But it really isn't locked
One quick note which I loved.
When I saw the crater and saw that frozen lightning bolt.
I remember Thor.
He said in the beginning. The first fight. Before anything even started.. he said... hmm.. that seems familiar.
And kratos says..what??
And Thor says. Forget it and starts to fight..
And then in the crater you learn about the story that went down with Thor and Faye.. that's just crazy 2me.. loved it
that sindri arc killed me. He was always this hygiene guy with gloves everything. Always complaining about it. And now he didn't gave two effs.. blood everywhere. Dirty. Making that sword with no gloves. Hair all over the place. You could see. He snapped. He lost it. He is broken.
I have to disagree about the valkyries. There are armor sets and weapons attachments that will melt any valkyrie
For me, this game hit harder from an emotional point than the first game. Kratos saying “Loki will go, but Atreus remains” made me cry
Agreed. Ragnarok made me cry 3 times.
NEVER cried during any movie or videogame but THAT part hit hard; especially after playing both games back to back. Another instant was when Atreus f**ks up and he goes to Sindri's house where Kratos asks him "What are you?" and Atreus hugs him
@@KeithGuide It has one of the best narratives ever. The death of Fenrir was tough too
i cried like a little baby at the end, and my god (of war) did i enjoy it
Is it just me or did he sound like Caesar from Planet of the Apes when he said that line. Just say it to yourself and replace Kratos with Cesar😂
Wow I appreciate Luke's efforts to reach the 10 min mark.
I know right!! I think it overshot it by like at least 3 minutes though
There are at least 2 minutes in this video
He almost made it
yeah he nearly made it, but good job tho xD
This is so funny for no reason😂😂😂
Fun fact: There is actually an in-game explanation of why Kratos lost all his armor and the Levaithan Axe and Chaos Blades were downgraded, Brok says at one point that Fimbulwinter wears down all things including objects, and that explains why everything was reset to zero.
was looking for someone to tell people this thx man.
I think it was mimir that said it.
and one of the dwarfs asks "what about all of those armors that i made you?" to which kratos replies "i used them". "will you take better care of these ones?" "no"
There’s also early in the part looking for atraes when he went to bury the wolf mimir said that fimblwinter worn down all thier magical gear
They even explain the loss of magic. They talk about how Fimbulwinter drained the magic from them, and when you start seeing wisps, wights, and phantoms, Freya even comments saying that all the magic drained from them had to go somewhere
For the REAL Tyr, they specified that Odin needs to have the people he disguises himself as alive in order to actively do so. Great video Luke!
Yea I've seen this other places. I don't think it was ever meant to be an 'omg' moment like Luke expected.
I think it was meant to be a damn, dude is alive all this time
The Crater was available to go through before the end game. I completed most of it before I completed the main questline
The Crater was such an awesome place.
Same here.
Same here it was my favorite part of the game
I completed it way before the end. Probably about halfway through. Parts of it were a bitch that early on.
yea it's such a cool ass area with tons of content and quests that is completely hidden unless you actually go and try to rescue Birgir
I love the detail that, while for most boss finishers you have to press a button to finish them, for Heimdall's final hit you don't, it just automatically goes into the cutscene, almost like Kratos is not actively thinking, but going on his old instincts
Damn, really good find. Love this
It could be that OR the fact that Heimdall's stun meter is permanently full . Meaning there's no stun grab option so it just starts the finisher automatically. I like your explanation better tho
Could also show cuz of heimdalls foresight, Kratos has no time to think on decisions or hesitate, just has to do it quickly
Ryan Hurst gave such a tremendous depth of character to to Thor, his performance was freaking amazing. 😭
I wish we could've seen more. Kind of upset that they killed him actually
I agree, he did a crazy good job with Thor, I really would have loved to see him survive Ragnarök!!
@@johndodo2062I think he’s gonna come back. He vanished when he died just like Athena did when she ascended to the higher existence.
Wow
I did it with freya. Both her and mimir were telling kratos that Loki would’ve loved doing this with him. After it was over he was eager to tell Loki about it.
This quest "For Vanaheim" can actually be done at right about half to three quarters of the game story. Right after killing Heimdall, at least that is the way it was for me
Yup, as soon as you can chase the pig/dog it's open.
I felt like it had the most impact with Atreus, so he learns about his mom
@@johncra8982 I did this Side quest when it was unlocked and played through the rest of the main story in Dragon Armor.
It's a really simple and easy to follow system.
that's not a great system
there's a reason games don't do that, makes the actual going to location getting to a straight line with extra steps
I had the same thought, as soon as Kratos got the spear I knew he was the one in the prophecies.
how was that crafty? you just said that he assumed. the giants didn't do anything but record and hide what they saw
@@Lonely.Ghoul_ Presumably that Odin and the other Aesir assumed it was Tyr since its a probable reason why Odin locked up Tyr
3:55:05 YES there is, if you go to the middle area you’ll see various rune combinations that lead to the different final challenges; and if you look at the base challenge rooms each of those have a rune on them. Once you complete a final challenge the runes associated with that challenge in the main arena will “turn off”
It’s still unnecessary complicated

There actually is an in-game que for the muspellheim challenges! Each of the sub arenas has a letter on the sword (F, R and N) and in the main arena on the floor, there are shining letter combinations that you haven't completed yet, such as FN, FR, and so on...
Yes dud. It took me a time to figure out but i did it without a guide
I noticed there were letters, but I just just remembered 1-2, 1-3, 2-1 and so on.
Honestly if I started counting all the errors like this in the video I'd be here all day. I was fairly disappointed in this review, despite the length.
There's a couple of combinations that don't show up on the central arena's floor which is weird but other than that yeah
A few quick things I'd like to throw in
- The Vanaheim side quest in the Crater doesn't only unlock in the post-game.

When Kratos blows Gjallarhorn; I was absolutely rocked by that sound, and I was definitely rocked by this game
Brok is the goat 🐐
Atreus' wrist just *crunching* into the chest just about killed me, and I'm glad I wasn't the only one.
We've already seen what happens to living beings who have their sould removed, and that level of existence is much more dire than Brok's was.
here's the thing though Odin is dead xd
@@victory8928 I can understand that but I would like to point out heimdall is in this game if he told kratos he would know
Luke, you really think I'm going to watch over 4 hour breakdown of GoW????

Hahahah I’m with ya buddy! 👍🏾
something else you didn't seem to get: the snake that we gave a soul to actually is jormungandr. there is a line of dialog that goes something like "the snake has grown a lot". that's why jormungandr recognizes atreus in the first game
1:21:15 A cool thing to add about the device they're using. In the first game, towards the end when Brok & Sindri took Mimir's head to "take some measurements" they were most likely building this. Don't know if this is common knowledge but they never really outright said that these two moments were connected so I thought I'd share
they just left him on the floor xd
Luke, for your comment at 1:12:13 " Disabling skills", it's actually extraordinarily useful. Playing on GMGOW some of the enemies one or two shot you, for some bosses I needed to take out some moves I'd use to interrupt attacks because they'd leave me too vulnerable, and instead of blaming the game for my mistake, I'd just disable attacks I shouldn't use. I'm looking at GNA and two berserkers for this offense!
did the same, it worked wonders.
Yea I usually disable the evade forward attack with the axe, wind up can leave you too open to certain enemies on GMGOW
@Matt Gibson I've had that happen a couple times when dodging attacks on GMGOW, but I just leave it active because I find all the dodge forward moves so useful as gap closers. I hate how it's permanently disabled bare-handed, when we had agile strike in the 1st game
Two little details I found in my replay:
1. Fenry's soul is split into 4 when Atreus cast his spell and you can see one part goes to the knife
2. If you stick around a little longer before leaving Odin's office after the first mask mission, you will see Odin speaking with one of his ravens and then teleports with the ravens. The next cut scene is of Kratos waking up and he sees Tyr is cooking
Wow I didn’t notice this
Bruh he literally mentions the first part in the video 😂.
When kratos came out of that portal I felt like I was in trouble 😂😂😂
🤣🤣🤣👍
@@anthonycitizencain I was like oh shit brother I’ve been caught 😂
I like the call back in the beginning where in the previous game Kratos tried to hide his scars on his arms from Atreus and keep it a secret, then in this one Atreus turned to hide his back to keep the secret of the little ball he had which was later found out held souls and was a representation of him wanting to save his dad from inevitable demise..
There are so many cool callbacks like that in this game. It’s great.
Loki having the ability to speak/read any language is actually great if he goes off to other realms. No language barriers there.

3:55:40 for real Luke it took me like ten minutes to figure out the order no guide needed it does show which ones are done on the floor
Yea I don’t know what he means when he said there were no indicators.
Man that Brok part really made tear up when Kartos asked for his blessing wow... and the Odin reveal and Sindrei broken moment made it so much hurt so much
42:10: you can hear the words "go hide mimir". Fucking love this game.
The first time we ever see Sindri or Brok phase through the realms...

1:11:40 in the last game, throwing your axe and recalling it to do the twirl move with the same button combo effed me over more than it ever helped, so being able to disable that while keeping the heavy version of the move was a huge improvement for me
As a die hard God of War fan since a kid nothing makes me happier than this game absolutely thrashing expectations
☺️👍🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾
what expectations did it thrash lmao
@@Terminator-ht3sx my expectations lmao
just sad how far the brand has fallen
@@marcusclark1339 you should really look into some anti-psychotics
The Crater isn’t post-endgame content. You can, and I would argue many people did, complete this whole section before the final battle in Asgard.
That makes sense man 💯
I thought this too the first time I saw it I wasn’t too surprised when I first saw Asgard I loved it tho you got a great point about it too
Couldn't be better timing.
Unpredictable
Also this is sort of proven, at least that fate was broken, as in the last mural the last scene was originally Thor (that giant 3d figure) standing over a dead kratos, however angrboda painted over it to show kratos alive and being worshipped
I think they broke fate when they used his blades to make Ragnarok, rather than Surtr combining with jis wife.
@@ademiravdic nah the developers confirmed it’s when he told Atreus to open hIs heart
It was Faye that painted the final mural
The reveal of fae was so awesome. That they actually showed her. It just showed her so strong and mysterious and beautiful. Like a guiding goddess but real. Her character made her feel so real. Before she was this infinite giantess. I though she was awesome, disarming, real. Excellently done.
You’re sad bro
30:50: There is the option to change the turn around to pressing L3 whilst pushing back on the stick. Although, not gonna lie it didn't work well for me personally as I would constantly accidentally press it in the heat of battle causing more harm than good for me. So I ended sticking with the default- but the option is here for people that want it.
Hey Luke! If you go back and watch the Heimdall fight Kratos does the same attack the second and third time anticipating Heimdall to block with his “new” bracer and Kratos grabs it and lands that first blow…epic
The movie you refer to at around 20:00 is snow dogs! Great movie
Bro I listen to your videos while I role blunts for myself and my homies. Love ur work🔥
Wow.. A 4 hour video on the game.. The dedication & detail that you give to your videos is amazing.
Mimir & brok absolutely carry this game for me. Just started the FREE dlc. Cant wait to replay the whole game
For the Muspelheim final challenges, the combinations are on the floor of the main arena, they glow once you complete them. Really easy to miss.
i like these types of videos while i'm studying for my finals, its like i'm listening to someone talk about the same interest while studying
I just spent over half a work day watching this entire thing. I have no regrets
Yea
yes he did, he confided his biggest secret to Atreus to make him feel better
11:15 "sometimes you are going to fight secondary bosses"
*shows the boss fight with the sons of Thor*
This seems like a calm and reasonable review. Is this a calm and reasonable review?
If the review calls for… calm
@@cosmoreverb3943I think the review calls for ...calm
The moment where Kratos kills Heimdall actually shocked me. That was the REAL god of war that came out of him for that minute. It made me realize exactly how much he holds back.
The Final Muspelheim challenges at the end are not that confusing - each sword in the "offshoot rooms" has a rune on it, and you can see the combinations of runes needed for each final challenge lit up on the floor of the big arena. But yes, they could have definitely communicated that more clearly
Tyr is pretty cool imo. He travels between relms and you can have a little chat with him. Odin needed Tyr alive to take his form
I grew up with God of War, I loved Kratos, but I didn’t want this series. I didn’t think he deserved a new series, let alone redemption. But they really pulled it off. Shit, I can’t believe Kratos made me cry.
Loved this game just as much of not more than 2018. The feels man…
Saw a long video with director about the crater and he said that he wanted for people to explore the game. So that area is a reward for exploration
I love that they changed the hand from the first game to a paw in this game for the journey
Luke should know you can go to the Crater BEFORE endgame. I explored a lot of that area with Atreus before killing Odin.
Actually i did manage to reach the crater before completing the main game. It is available to you after the death of heimdal (I assume if you are watching this vid you have played the game), so i dont know if thats a fair critic. It wasn't locked behind the endgame (Or i just misinterpreted what you meant or said)
After writing this comment i may have tought that by endgame you meant the later parts of the story instead of AFTER the end of the game, if so myb
Regarding the muspelheim trials, you can track which you’ve done in game. The places where the chests will show up, have runes on them. Those runes correspond to the runes you can find in the challenge rooms on the sword things.
Just Platinum’d this two days ago. Incredible game. I can’t decide between this and Elden Ring as my favorite of the year!
Did you find the wolf's grave in the beginning of the game? When Kratos is searching for Atreus, the grave can be found resulting in dialogue. Every play through I've watched people never came across it.
@@happypuppy-i4k Where is it ?
@@azulruina I will try to describe where it is. Go to the two wolves. Turn and face the fence. As you walk to the fence, look down on the left side. It is against the rocky wall.
Or start at the fence and turn around and look down on your right side. There is a mound of dirt and either Mimir or Kratos will say, this must be where he buried Fenrir. In mission anyway.
@@happypuppy-i4k Nice man, thank you.

Nice, gotta love his reference to what you're probably doing while you watch this
It was a perfect duo. The kill bill of the video game medium. A masterpiece
Thank you! Something new to use as background noise while I study/do assignments! Very well made!
