  • This video will take you through my journey of converting an empty room into a home theatre (home cinema). Let me know if you like me to post how to clips on this project!
    With this, I have built a sound proof and heavy duty seat riser using professional tips with two rows of seating. This is the first phase of the build. I will be adding more decorations in the future. Please comment with your ideas and like the video if you enjoyed it.
    Room dimensions: 19.6 feet long x 13.1 feet wide.
    Riser dimensions: 7.10 feet long, 9.10 feet wide and 1.5 feet height.

    You actually want to fill the whole riser, with fluffed, uncompressed, unbacked batts. You have vents so you'll want to use formaldehyde free batts to reduce VOCs (and treated wood has pretty nasty chemicals). You need 7% open area of the riser deck/face/sides for the Helmholtz resonator. Can leave the face off, just covered with carpet. Not sure that black tape and foam is ideal for squeaking, roofing felt is usually used. Use it between all joints, not just under the riser top. Double thick top is good! Good job doing that carpet yourself, that can be a pain. Screen looks good, back wall design is cool. I was worried about the white receptacle/etc covers, but the furniture hides them. The finished room looks very nice, kudos!

    • @smokindrill
      @smokindrill  24 дні тому +1

      Great feedback for the next build, thank you 👍🏻. The batts are special wools and free of toxics, it’s a good point to mention in the description!!. After a year of usage I have been lucky not hearing squeaking or echos but your suggestion will improve it for sure. Thanks again.

    Nice video showing us how you built out the room, but what about the most important part of a home theater - your equipment and how you set it up. Sitting in comfortable chairs in a nice room is one thing, but watching and listening to lousy system defeat the whole experience. Tell us about your system- what type of equipment and speakers did you use, did you wire for Atmos? How many speakers and there placement. Would love to know more about the projector you’re using? I didn’t see any subwoofer…..

    • @smokindrill
      @smokindrill  10 місяців тому +3

      No problem, great feedback!! I plan to upload an informational video on some of your questions. The room dimensions and the riser dimensions are mentioned throughout the video (room is 19.6 feet long x 13.1 feet wide & riser is 7.10 feet long, 9.10 feet wide and 1.5 feet high) Regarding budget, it really depends on how much you like to spend on quality. You could be spending anything between 10k-15k for a most basic setup to 50k-70k for a luxury setup (US dollars)! I have probably spent around $20k US so far with a lot of personal time and effort on the labour part that can save 20k by far. I will be upgrading the room further so my budget is not final yet 😊. My tip would be to start searching on different seatings, different equipment and even considering secondhand gear as a starting point 👍🏻.

      Hey there, thank you and a great point. Currently it's 5.1 setup. I have moderate speakers installed under the recessed ceiling at the front and the back. They are kind of hidden in the video but still possible to spot :). This was the first phase of the build and in the next phase I will be upgrading the system. I am looking at installing in wall speakers. Please let me know if you have any suggestions! Also stay tuned for future videos on this theatre room as I will be applying a number of aesthetic enhancements too. Cheers.

    • @gotifan
      @gotifan 10 місяців тому

      @@smokindrill Ahh, that's kinda what I figured. Personally, I would advise against in-walls in *most* cases, and against in-ceiling speakers in *all* cases (unless they're Atmos speakers). In-ceiling speakers should never be used for your foundation speakers (ie; non-height speakers) unless absolutely necessary. You'll have terrible imaging. Looking at this room, I would recommend towers (even slender ones) up front where you have the Storm Trooper and Vader statues, with the best center channel you can budget. You have the space there and you'll get the best front sound stage, without the complication and extra work it would take to make in-walls sound good, ie; baffling, toe in, etc. Again, avoid in-ceiling speakers for your front stage. For rears, I would look at mounting them on the brown part of the wall at the back of the room, on the same part of the wall that goes into the book shelf area, and the same wall on the other side, OR on the brown part of the wall next to the back wall where you have your acoustic panels. The former would probably be better as you'll have them a little wider apart. Play around with it a bit before committing. As for speaker brands/models, anything but BOSE lol. Try out a few brands in store that fit your budget. My system is kinda budget, and I have a mix, Polk center and surrounds, Mission Audio towers, Klipsch subs, Pioneer receiver, but because the room is treated and everything is EQ'd, it sounds pretty good.
      You really did do a fantastic job in that room. Get that audio right and it'll be absolutely killer. Cheers and best of luck. Welcome to the hobby :)

    Amazing build for a small space. Very talented. On the other hand, I am disappointed to see your speaker and speaker layout. Seemed like a perfect room to utilize in-wall speakers, especially up front, along with an acoustically transparent screen. Is there a reason you chose those tiny speakers and subwoofer (assumedly from a Home Theater in a Box system)?

    • @smokindrill
      @smokindrill  10 місяців тому +2

      Thank you for your great feedback. This was the initial phase of the build and I am exploring in wall speakers for the next phase. To be honest I am getting a decent sound out of these tiny speakers as I have incorporated a Yamaha AV ☺️ but it just doesn’t justify the room setup. Please tune in for the second phase as I have a number of enhancements lined up. Working on a Star Wars theme already. Cheers

Estimating an additional $10K. Getting it done professionally will be around $60K. Of course these are rough figures and the cost will depend on how much you are willing to spend on quality and brands.

    All that effort and you didn't buy a screen that hits the wall edge. Could have totally accommodated a 135-140" screen in that recessed nook. I never understand this in fixed screen home theater builds.

    • @smokindrill
      @smokindrill  10 місяців тому +1

      Nick, it’s a great point. The issue lies with the distance between the screen and the back seats. Before purchasing the screen, I measured from 120” to 130” size screens by marking the wall and realised that the front seats will cover up to 20” of the bottom of the screen. I wish the room was one meter longer to accommodate a big screen.
      In any case, the 120” looks quite big when in the room. Unfortunately mobile phone cameras don’t capture the scale well.
      Cheers and thanks for the comment 👌🏻.
