This included sinking the USS Independence, loaded with radioactive waste, off the islands. The Independence itself was highly radioactive as it had been in usedthe Crossroads nuclear bomb tests. Oh, and all the waste dumped there is still there.
I believe the common murre population alone dropped from about 400,000 birds to just 60,000 :/ The Farallon Islands today are home to a seabird sanctuary with a thriving, albeit still recovering common murre population
