I think the most logical theory is that the rongorongo script is a descendant of indus valley script, the areas the people went through from there to easter island were not as lucky to be preserved like in mesopotamia and surrounding areas to find out about its whole history.
I hate how researchers dismiss plausible theories because they either lack an empathic imagination or have racial prejudices to easily dismiss their potentially longer history than their own.
