Hi Nigel, Thanks for the great review. It looks like a really nice kit. Thanks for sharing. Have a great day. Jeff
Nigel, Another nice review. If you really do have 20 Lancaster kits, and you got them all built, think of the large-scale dioramas you could construct - whole squadrons at an air base comes to mind. 🙂
Another great review Nigel. Love the mid fuselage details. Cheers.
Glad you liked it!
Another good review, Nigel, thank you. Looks like a fine rendition and it's giving me lots of food for thought re. my 1/72 scale conversion of the Airfix Lanc.
Hope you enjoy it!
Lovely review Nigel
Another very nice kit. Ref the instructions, perhaps you could ask Neil to make them A4 and punch them so they can go in a lever arch file?
Totally crazy, the bits you sent me under royal mail 48 hour delivery took 6 days.
They where sat in Bristol for 4 working days, it was only because i complained to royal mail that it took 6 working days.
The royal mail inforned me that 48 hours was not a target but 'a best endeavour' and it could take upto 11 working days.
I once had an international parcel sat in customs for 11 days. Of course, I was charged VAT which was fair enough, but the cheeky bastards charged me £13 instead of the usual £8 because the sender paid for a priority service!!!
Royal Mail will soon be renamed Amazon and delivery will be fantastic, cos it’s a company run efficiently!
Great review on this kit
Glad you enjoyed it
Looking forward to the build on that one..true successor the Tamiya kit
Another great review Nigel. I do hope that HK scale down the Havoc to 1/48 (fingers crossed). Just picked up another one of their B-17's (while I could still get one haha).
I'm sure they will do that!!
Barnes Wallis: inventor of the geodetic fuselage, bouncing bomb, tallboy and grand slam as well as an effective cover for HKM's ejector pins
LOL
looks like it`s going to be a great build Nigel
Hello NIgel, nice review as usual. May I have just a quick question regarding the Border Dambuster kit review? Will it be reuploaded, or am I missing it because I remember the name of the video incorrectly? KR, Martin
Thanks for the nudge.. it's back now, without the music.
Thanks for the review! I built the HK 1/48 Lancaster B Mk. I. Very nice kit and a big improvement over their B-17. Hoping they’ll complete the trifecta and do a 1/48 B-24.
So what were your issues with the B-17?
It's been a while, but the biggest problem I remember was a very awkward join between the upper fuselage and the rest of the aircraft. Couldn't get that in place without a painful seam line. Just looked like an arrangement that was asking for trouble,@@NigelsModellingBench
Thank you. I have heard others say this.. it would appear that some kits are better than others??
It does appear that way. When I built the Lancaster, it looked like HK learned from their mistakes in the B-17. The result was a very fine kit, IMO. @@NigelsModellingBench
For a detailed description of the Tallboy, Grandslam, Upkeep Mine etc, you can try finding a copy of the book 'Bombs Gone'. I am not sure if it's still in print, it contains drawings and photos of British bombs from the 1920s up to the later part of the 20th century.
Great video Nigel! Was hoping they'd do one in this scale after watching your preview on the 1/32 kit. I do have a question, if I was looking for Grand Slam kit where I want the exterior to look right and not too concerned about the interior, would you recommend this or the Tamiya? Cheers
Tough question... neither has correct wheels, SABS sight or tall astrodome. Tamiya is cheaper, but has less surface detail and riased panel lines?? I did a review comparing the two... ua-cam.com/video/lCJUg-zlMwE/v-deo.html&ab_channel=NigelsModellingBench
Super review Nigel - I must say I have been holding off getting an HK 1/48 Lanc until this version came out, and the built example on Neil's stand at Telford completely sold it for me. Can't wait to get mine from Hannants!
Don't suppose you know when these are hitting the UK, do you? No outlet seems to have a timescale for their arrival, though I would imagine it will be March time based on you getting hold of this early example?
I believe it is due in March.
I noticed on my B1 kit that HK Models moulded the rear turret without doors, just a one piece clear moulding with a gap where they should be. If the rear gunner leaned back with the turret traversed he'd be out of the aircraft! I thought they might have rectified it for this, but it looks like they haven't.
Maybe the kit was designed as if the doors were opened lol.
@@NigelsModellingBench 😁 Nothing that can't be sorted with some plastic card and bad language!
Hi Nigel, I've just got my hands on the dambusters version of this kit. Do you have a recommendation for a good reference guide? I have seen the wingleader archive book for the Lancaster but i don't know if it includes the special versions?
There is a wingleader book dedicated to the specials.. my part works build will be full of accuracy comments as well. The book is number 18
Thanks
Thank YOU sir!!
Nice kit
Hi Nigel. Watched your Topol M review, where you explained how you liked the look of the Soviet and Russian weapons. Just wanted to recommend taking a look at the 2A3 Kondensator nuclear artillery. I guess you'll like it.
You are correct, I've built it..
Hello Nigel, thanks for the clear review. I have a question; I want to build my first Lancaster 1:48 ( previously I built ships and tanks) which version would you recommended to me. The 2021,2023 or the 2024 version ? Thank you .
They are all pretty much the same kit, but one is BI/III one is a Dambuster and the other is a Grand Slam.
I WANT IT!
Nigel could i ask one question i really like your chanel and as i sit here watching you doing so many models i was wondering where you put them all once you have finished them as some of them are quite big lol
All over the house.
Hi Nigel, lovely kit, great review but wasted on me! In your opinion what is the best budget 1/48 Lancaster kit? Thanks in advance.
Other than this there is only the Tamiya kit.
Hello Nigel I am doing the hk model Lancaster nose kit and there is a clear fuselage to fit to see through all the details please could you tell me what is the best glue to fit the clear fuselage to the plastic side thank you Peter hope Jess is doing ok.
You could use PVA, Micro Krystal Klear or Mig Ammo ultra glue. They all dry clear.
Thank you nigel much appreciated
How does this compare with the Tamiya Dumbuster/Grandslam kit?
I made a video covering that subject a while back Kris. ua-cam.com/video/lCJUg-zlMwE/v-deo.html&ab_channel=NigelsModellingBench
How did you keep a straight face while saying flaps hanging out, sorry school boy humour
Who said I had a straight face?? lol.
You in the tank for hk models or what????
Not at all.
Ok ... they are producing good subjects for sure
A Booom-caster.
Yes... big Boooom!!
The problem is the kit does not have the later main treaded tire and wheel hubs.
Yes, just like I said in the video.. it also has fuselage windows which should not be there but how about the positives.. it has crisp moulding, lovely rivet detail and a full interior.
Perhaps I should have got this one rather than the 1/32? What am I saying - that should be an and not an or!
Again F'up on the more expensive 1/32 corrected on the cheaper 1/48.There seems to be a theme here. How about next time F'up on the cheaper 1/48 and correct on the more expensive 1/32.
To be fair there have been changes made to the 1/32 Lancaster and the 1/32 Havoc due to customer comments.
@@NigelsModellingBench Yes true, they could follow on with the B17 which I would happily buy just as a corrected fuselage.Same goes for the B25 a corrected engine/prop kit with the parts to do Cactus Kitten..
@@NigelsModellingBench Haven't got the Lancaster, what corrections have they done.Only interested in the standard bomber version.
In the 1/32 Lanc they have corrected the height of the cockpit floor, corrected the rudder pedal length and corrected the tailplane fitting issue. They are the ones I know of.
@@NigelsModellingBench Is that for the bomber version, also how do you tell the corrected kit from the earlier kit.
A very disappointing release.
It’s basically the B Mk. I (& Mk. III) kit with sprues of paddle bladed propellers, & a sprue of Grand Slam conversion components.
Why do the fuselage moulds still have windows in them?
By the time these airframes were built every Lancaster coming off the production line did not have fuselage windows. They were totally deleted from the construction.
Instead…we as modellers are expected to get out the old filler & do the job for the manufacturer.
The extended astrodome…also standard on all late build Lancasters…it’s just not good enough.
There is enough evidence & data out there.
Frankly the only item of use to me are the paddle bladed prop sprues. With those & the B Mk. I/III kit I could produce any standard Lanc OOB.
At least when Tamiya did it years ago it was a “two in one” option…the Dam Buster or Grand Slam option … all the components in one box … errors & all.
I can see the Dam Buster option right now…it’s going to be the “vanilla” B Mk. I/III kit just like this one again, with an UPKEEP sprue, different decals (probably wrong as usual & limited to a couple of aircraft instead of all of them) … so three kits in total.
It’s such a shame - the actual new generation techniques that were used to design this kit offer so much potential. Don’t get me wrong…I love the base kit.
But what disappoints me is the lack of drive by the company to just go that little bit further … in the name of authenticity & accuracy.
Shame.
To answer you on all points raised..
it is basically a B.MKI with paddle props and a Grand Slam sprue because the grand slam was basically a B.MkI with Grand slam mods.
There is not a Lancaster kit out there with no windows, they all have them.. probably due to the massive cost to retool them.
Yep, HK missed the raised astrodome, and the wheels and tyres, and the SABS, as did Tamiya. I'm sure the AM will cater for that for those who want an accurate model. It is a shame that these things have been missed I agree, but now I will be offering advice to Neil going forward to try and iron out these issues on new releases.
The Dambuster model was released ages ago.
There is a motorised Grand Slam Tamiya kit on Ebay right now for £150. Just sayin...
@@NigelsModellingBench yup…I’ve built 3 Tamiya Lancs in the past 18 months…the two versions available out of the Dam Buster kit & the B Mk. I/III.
I’m fully aware that there is no moulding of a Lancaster fuselage available without the windows!!! Hence why I mention it!
With regard to HKs B Mk. I Kit, the decals of the registration number are also incorrect for one of the versions - the Admiral Prune one…as proven by a photograph in the Wingleader Lancaster volume on the early production versions.
Yes new moulds are expensive … I realise that…but so are plastic model kits these days.
It might be useful to to point manufacturers in the direction of such publications as these.
