It's good of them to do this kit. I'm 75 years old, I'm a Canadian, and the earliest memory I have of anything on "the news" is from 1953, when I was 5 years old...........the coronation of Queen Elizabeth II. It was a very big story at the time, and so I was well aware of it and still remember it to this day.
Thank you Nige for sharing my build. The pho at the competition was the HK stand at Telford when it first appeared outside my local club at the time
My pleasure.

Another great review! Where do you find the time! Your’s are exemplary. Do I detect a Monarchist in our midst, based on your loving comments on our recently departed Queen? I thought I was the only one. As you know, she was Queen of Canada too and she was a perfect example of grace, sacrifice and dedication to her job and her peoples around the world. God Bless her memory.
Well said sir.
Dear Nigel,
I was pleased to watch your video which, some respects, wasn’t a kit review but a tribute to Her Majesty the late Queen Elizabeth 2.
This was a marvellous thing to do.
Thank you.
Regards,
Z
Glad you enjoyed it Zinners
I watched this video when you first uploaded it and thought the kit looked a worthy companion for the Border Dambusters Lancaster, but money was tight, very fortunately I got an email today and picked one up for £275!
Thanks for all your great content, happy modelling!
Thanks Nige, great review, another heavy in the stash 👍
Good Review, liked the mix of history with kit review, adds a different - interesting dynamic.
Glad you enjoyed it
Nice review Nigel, looks like a great kit.
The figure of her majesty looks amazing. The bouquet particularly looks fun to paint, to me anyway! One day I’ll build one of these big kits.
You had it right!
Late B-17G's would have the Cheyenne tail gun installation, which was a depot mod done by United Airlines in Cheyenne Wyoming after delivery. It has larger windscreens allowing an optical gunsight.
Thanks Riley
Thanks for the review, interested in the subject as I spent several years working at RAE Bedford which was built on and over Thurleigh Airfield.
As a supporter of "Sally B" over at Duxford I couldn't resist the F model with the appropriate markings. Not that I have anywhere to put something this size so maybe I'll donate it to the charity!
Great idea
Hi Nigel, that looks to be a absolutely brilliant kit, way too big for me, but I hope you have a great time building it when you get around to it, thanks for the review, best regards from a Kiwi living in Australia
Thanks 👍
I’m tempted to get this kit it’s a lovely model by Hk
Thank you for this review.
My pleasure!
Airfix’s 1/72 Bit of Lace is close to my heart. Lovely build of her in 1/32. 😍
One note from my research into "A Bit O'Lace" for my own 1/32 HK kit: Despite the Cheyenne Tail turret, Lace had the early un-staggered waist guns, indicating she was a mid production series, converted at the Cheyenne Midification centre before deployment. Colour photos of her do reveal a difference in the metal skin tones around the tail turret, further evidence of the modification.
Later production B-17G's were factory fitted with the tail turret, using the same stocks as the factory used so do not show any sign of mods made either in Cheyenne or at a depot.
Another great review Nigel 👍👍 that kit looks amazing, sadly out of my price range.
Sorry to hear that
@@NigelsModellingBench maybe something for the future, would love to have a go at something that big and with that quality. Hope you and Jess and your mum are doing ok
Tks Nigel
Paying £400 for a kit wouldnt put me off if it was something i really wanted but BMF for something that size is really tricky, even for modellers of our experience. I noticed one on ebay for £320 then noticed it was in germany. Is there a bit of irony in there somewhere 😂 Happy new year to you and jess.
Such a bad influence Nigel. I didn’t know Hannants existed until I found your channel, but now my bank balance does 😂 and now am going to have to get one of these! Is there a way to let them know it’s because of you am buying? Anyway happy new year to you and thanks for the great review and videos!
Welcome aboard! They know the sales are from my reviews, they sold over 30 of the Grand Slam!!
Very Nice.RAF Thurleigh local to me and the on site 306th Museum is worth a visit (free entry)Post War the airfield became RAE Bedford.
A relative of mine was a Ball Turret gunner on the B17 with the 385th.Shot down over France and became a POW.
Only found this out whilst visiting the American Cemetery at Madingly Bt Cambridge.
Hi Nigel. Your review made me curious as I hadn’t remembered noticing any issue on my kit with the stbd waist gunner port having been moved forward. So I had a good look and the panel lines and finish is perfect on mine which is 01E030 the Late Production G model. Also wasn’t the first kit released a G, which makes even less sense why it would have been re-tooled to move the hole, unless it was a mistake which they realised late in the day!? Thoughts?
Funnily enough, I was thinking the same today.. my initial kit 01E04 had staggered holes and I converted it to non staggered. It had no marking like this one does? I think the tooling must have been altered to do the E/F series so now anything after that will have the marking from the plug. I assume Neil has made a switchable plug in the tooling?
It looks like they have left all the internal detail parts for an E/F kit (I have one) in this kit. If you have a F forward fuselage (THe E/F kit has two forward fuselages, one E and very early F, one mid to later F), you could build almost ANY G kit from this as Very Early G's (and a few late F models)used the F forward fuselage, but with the Chin turret. So an Early/Mid production series G with stinger and F style turret, Mid production series with G styled turret and optional Stinger/Cheyenne tail or a Late G are all possible options, if you have the right markings.markings. The only real issue is the staggered (Mid to Late) or unstaggered (Early to Mid & Midified) waist guns. The Warpaint book on the B-17 by Kev Darling (Warpaint #90) has a ton of info of the B-17 from go to whoa.
Hi Nigel, Wow, That's quite a kit. Back in the 40's the Army Air Corps had a base here where they trained B-17 crews. Did you know Clark Gable was a waist gunner in one of these? Thanks for sharing. Have a great day. Jeff
Bloody hell, was he really!!
@@NigelsModellingBench Check your e-mail, I just sent you a few photos. Jeff
@@NigelsModellingBenchJimmy Stewart was C.O. Of 453 Bomb Group and completed 20 combat missions over occupied
Europe in B-24s. He also flew 1 combat mission over North Vietnam as an observer, during Operation Arc light in 1966, his final mission in a war zone.
Clark Gable was a certain Fuhrers favorite actor. Special instructions were given to German forces on how to handle him if he should be taken prisoner.
Gene Roddenberry flew 89 missions in B-17's in the Pacific, and later flew for Pan American.
Carrol Shelby flew B-29's among many other things, but never saw combat.
And for California people or maybe really esoteric car people, Cal Worthington flew 29 missions over Germany in B-17's
It's going to be fun weathering and chipping the bouquet of roses.
Stems or petals?
@@NigelsModellingBench Both.
Nice review, if I only had the room…
What a great kit, thanks for a great review Nigel 😁 I have put an order in 😉🤩 I also ordered some of the Eduard kits, but many of them are discontinued. Do you have spares that I could buy from you?
I don't think so Kenneth, but I will check. There is a KA set for this model. If you must have Eduard, Ebay is your friend. HGW seatbelts are best, There are many resin wheels and plenty of other stuff out there. I will make a video on all of my stuff.
@@NigelsModellingBench I will check for the seat belts. But the set I would love to get hold of is the BIGED 3332. Otherwise I have been able to source most of the Eduard sets.
Where did you buy it and what was the final price ? Tks Stefano
I used to live in Hk but HK models does no longer sell its models there so I cannot secure this from my favorite hobby shop there
So Nigel, would you recomend the 1:48 B-17 from Hong Kong Model? I dont care about some accuracy issues. I'm looking for a straightforward build without a ton of putty and rescribing, because i'm an armor builder. 🤣 1:32 is too big for me and it wont match with my other 1:48 bird's.
You have three choices for a 1/48 B-17. Revell, Monogram and HKM. By far the HKM has the crispest detail but is a more involved build. The Revell and Monogram kits are cheaper but have raised panel lines and no rivet detail.
@@NigelsModellingBench Thank you for the info. The HKM B-17 it is then. I have no problem with more parts and a more complex construction but i don't like ill fitting parts and a lot of rework. On a plane with all the rivets it can be a tiresome job.
For me, the best thing of this kit is the resin figure of Her Majesty, and the box art. But, the price tag, the shape problem on the nose, and the misplaced outer engines simply don’t fit for me. Anyway, thanks for the second hour of watching your videos today!
I agree, but since no one else sadly will do a proper kit I have one.I do intend to make a simple nose and windscreen correction.Metal barrels and limited various obvious photo etch and decals.
Hope to see you build this one of these days? 😀 I have the -F Memphis Belle and every bit of AM I can throw at it. Just can't start it because I don't have enough room for my current projects let alone that giant piece. LOL
I just uploaded a review of the F.
@@NigelsModellingBench , I'll be sure to check it out. I've heard all about all of the inaccuracies on these, but as long as they still look the part, I don't particularly mind that much.
Hi Nigel,
If you want some more really nice detail parts for this kit, give Master Details a look. Oxygen bottles, nose glazing defroster hose, bomb sight, and more.
Thank you
Hello Nigel from Virginia
Can you give me the website and the price when to get the HKmodrl B17G rose of York
Thank you so much
Cheers
Stefano
Most of the UK sellers have it. Hannants is the main supplier in the UK.
Very nice kit sir and nice model of the Queen.
Sure is!!
Nigel + you spent almost as much money on after market parts as for the kit I do that a lot really nothing woring with that tho great kit
I think the B17 is going to be a very popular subject when the masters of the air series is released.
I think I might sub to apple to watch that?
@NigelsModellingBench yes Apple TV. I expect there's a 1 month free trial offer on some where. 👍
There's a 7 day trial, I guess I'll get to watch one part for free? Can one share their log in with other family members?
@NigelsModellingBench I'm not sure, to be honest.
@@NigelsModellingBenchor Wait until all episodes have been released and binge watch with the free trial.
👍
Just vents to let fuel vapours out not engine heat.
beautiful kitten Nigel can you ask Hong Kong models if he has any plans releasing Rose of York in 148
I shall ask.
@@NigelsModellingBench thank you very much
Cor…..what a lot you get!
Why have a interior in detail when your going to cover it up
The Stars and bars would be the confederate battle flag.. just sayin... =P
Thanks.. got it wrong again!!
