- Today at Ugly Truck, we're fixing the air conditioning on our newest project, a 1974 Chevy C20. It's been too hot to take Ripley for a truck ride, and she's been pouting about it all week. This truck's AC system was originally R12, but we're going to show you how to retrofit it over to R134. We have an AC machine, but we went to @oreillyautoparts and rented a vacuum pump and gauge set, and bought everything you would need to retrofit your system to R134 at home. We saved a few bucks and filled our system using our 30 lb bottle, but you could absolutely use the smaller cans of refrigerant off the shelf. Now this square body Chevy is nice and cool!

Could you show us how to hook a new style(ls) compressor to an old truck/car a/c system.? If it's even possible . Plans are to ls swap an early 50's Chevy Belair. A.C. would be a bonus
Companies like Vintage Air probably make a kit for that car. The issue going from an R12 system to R134 is the condenser. The older condensers don't work as good as the thin tube condensers these days. So if you're building your own system you would really just want to change the condenser and compressor, and if the rest of the system is ok, you should be good to go. Thanks --Jerry

Awesome! We don't own one (yet 😉) but we love the square body Blazers! It's virtually the same as the pickups, but they have such a different feel booking down the road. 👍👍
@@UglyTruckExperience Did. Not. Disappoint! Thank you for the clear concise how-to with a little theory mixed in. On my ‘88 the compressor is toast I believe. But now I feel confident to replace the compressor and go from there. The gauges and pressure part of it always scared me off before. So thank you for that. On my ‘85 M1009 it never came with AC, so if y’all ever catch a wild hair and haul off on a Vintage Air install, I’d love it. There’s some decent videos out there on it but it’s one of those it never fails they have a camera battery go down or forgot til film a portion etc. and it always seems to lose me. And the M1009 has no OD behind the 6.2 Detroit so looking forward to seeing what you do on this ‘74. We had a ‘76 GMC longbed 2wd 454 when I was a kid and that thing would haul some major glass….seeing this ole gal brought back some more memories. I like your seat better though. We had the vinyl that either roasted you or froze you. Gotta love Oklahoma weather. Keep up the great work y’all!
The only thing I don’t like about r134 in my 78 K5 is that when I get into town then the r12 condenser doesn’t have enough capacity to transfer the superheat so I lose the cooling capacity till I get the airflow back up when I’m driving. Other than that it works fine and I did completely re oring the compressor and all the fittings with the green orings and a new shaft seal. Those compressors are really easy to reseal and online the seal kit are pretty cheap
Do you think electric fans would help ?
100% If we we're going to spend some money on it I would start with thin tube condenser and cooling fans. It would be chilly.

I have a 79 k30 400sb with a quadrajet,what carb would you suggest?
The Q-jet got rebuilt,doesn’t keep its idle/adjustments.

the caps are not designed to stop a valve core leak.
You are correct. The high.side quite leaking but the low has not. Tightening the Schrader valve did nothing so I will have to reclame refrigerant and fix it. Thanks for watching..
