- Williams's announcement that it will have a new livery for the 2020 Formula 1 season got us thinking about other designs that never took part in a grand prix. We've picked out 10 of our favourite designs that weren't raced, and looked at the stories behind them being used in the first place. Yeah Toyota lacked imagination but I dont really think they had to do much to that livery it was just so good in my opinion and I dont really think they needed to change anything to it

I liked it, too.
I liked the plain red and white of Toyota's 2001 test car (TF101). It lacked imagination (but then Ferrari's red is hardly setting a new livery trend every year), but as the video points out, it was at least a link to the sports car program from 1999.
Mercedez too..lacked of imagination livery.
Loved the brush strokes but this still made me laugh.
The all black renault this year looked absolutely stunning, its a shame they didnt keep ir for the rest of the season...

The orange MP4/13 has to be one of the best looking cars in F1
I always loved the look of Toyotas for some reason, I always picked them in F1 2003 as a 5 year old lol

I just absolutely love all of those special Red Bull liveries. Especially the black/white and blue/white ones.
Such a shame we haven't seen them in a GP. Yet.
Love the 555 BAR. Although i’m glad we ended up with that legendary Lucky Strike scheme, as I think it was one of the coolest designs of the early 2000’s.

My number 1 would be the 2019 Red Bull Test livery, it just looks so beautiful.
It was awesome but i prefer the 2018 one with the blue.

Williams Advanced Technologies has ties with Lotus due to their collab on the Evija. Hopefully Latifi buys a share off Lotus and rebrands the team into Lotus Williams Racing. The fusion of two racing legends.

@@tbc5902 Envo is correct. The one with red clovers and hearts was the 2019 VD livery, the snakeskin with heart AR logo was the 2020 VD logo.

It makes me reminded of that one Red Bull livery (2019) where all the accents are red instead of usual colours
(The body was still black, but the logos and stuff were red)

The seated driver livery is one of the most clever liveries ever!
it was´t at actual livery but i still remember (and love) the 1998 plain black ferrari that Schumacher used for a test in fiorano. That looked really cool, full black with the gold rims.

Mastercard Lola? It failed to qualify at the only race the team would attend, so technically you could say that livery never actually raced. Crap car but a good livery.
And how many teams now would cry to have mastercard as a tittle sponsor
Barnaby Lee and yet it was MasterCard that basically forced that team to fade before it even stepped off the mark.
Mastercard told them they had 4 moths to make the car so yea

That silver Force India livery did live on in 2017 in a way though, as then academy driver Jehan Daruvala used it on his Formula 3 car that year.
those red bulls are so freaking sick, the should do pre season with their normal scheme and suprise us with such a slck scheme
There was a stunning green and white Jordan that ran just before B&H came in, they also had the 191 in black for their debut season, thankfully it was replaced by the green and blue for that one. It is still one of the best designs for an F1 car.

I always thought that particular Force India was really bland and uninspiring compared to the previous years. Way too much silver and way too little orange and green. I guess it was because the change to pink was already arranged, so they didn't bother to do it properly.
This was the year my daughter started watching F1 andd she supported force India because her faviourite colour was pink. I'm glad they had some good results that season.

Am I the only that hated the Silver Force India? They used to have that green and orange combo which was awesome, and their 2014 car was also really nice. But why silver? There was already Mercedes, and silver and orange is a horrible combination really

My favourite is the SAP McLaren livery in 2014 testing times. That silver/black combination with the yellow SAP logo blowing in the sides was stunning.
I like the St. Valentine's Day livery that Alfa Romeo Sauber launched with on 14.02.2018.
Willliams have a habit of testing with a plain dark blue livery, sometimes featuring retro white number roundels.
This year Renault ran a menacing all-black. Loved it! Whereas during Benetton-Renault off season they ran a white and yellow livery.
I always think about the 555 BAR livery because of how nice it is
The Renault 2006/'07 and 1999/2000 BMW testing liveries were truly stunning.
Worth mentioning: Enzo Ferrari wanted his car to race painted in "giallo Modena" (Modena/Modenese yellow), but he was forced to paint them red because at time car manifacturers have to race under their superlicensing Federation's colour, which for the Italian ACI (Automobile Club Italiano, Italian Automobile Club) was the "rosso corsa" (racing red) Ferrari now is traditionally associated with. But the company's true official colour, still visible in the logo, still is "giallo Modena", a livery we unfortunately never officially saw despite having been the one originally thought by its founder.
What about the Rothmans Tyrrell of 1990 ?

The 555 livery definitely deserving of the number 1 slot, although the dark blue Renault certainly deserves a higher spot.

I think both the 1999 original BARs in 2 different liveries looked great, the zip looked wrong.....
The BAR from 04/05 practice AD livery was great too
@@PHOENiXIlRiSiNG I liked the Lucky Strike livery but the 555 had the WRC provenance which just edged it for me. Agree seperately they'd have been a great pairing if allowed to compete like that.
The 2019 red-and-black testing livery on the Red Bulls was amazing. It was an aggressively mechanical looking car with those boxy stripes and really stood out from the rest.

Redless Redbull, ironic I know, are the most beautiful liveries I have seen.
Nothing gets close to silver arrows mclaren though.

The first Force India (dark Red, White, Gold) was awesome!
Absolutely loved the BAR 555 test car. I actually bought one of the pit crew shirts that were specially made for this race. Also, from BAR, their test livery in 2004, all black with silver branding of Honda and Lucky Strike, that would have made my list.
All pre-2009 cars looked so beautiful. Why cant we go back to those designs again.
Nah, far too many winglets and cluttered aero parts on the 2007 and 2008 cars

When Ferrari first tested the initial F300 for 1998 at the test track at Fiorano, it was in an all black livery. But when it hit the track for the opening race, it had the red of title sponsor Marlboro
The Alfa Romeo liverys before pre-season testing in the past 2 years were stunning 😍 I have no idea how you didn't include them

alfa romeo's valentine's livery in winter testing of 2019 was epic. So was the snake livery in 2020.

1 - 1997/2006 Orange McLaren Livery
2 - 2007 Dark Blue Renault Livery
3 - 2007 All Black Honda Livery
The last year alfa Romeo test livery IS my favorite test livery

There are certain rivalries in F1 that were iconic, and the liveries mark them graphically. In the early 1970's the black Lotus vs. The blue Tyrrell, the early 1990's the orange (yes, orange) and white McLaren vs. The blue and yellow Williams, and in the 2000's the red Ferrari vs. The silver McLaren.
That 555 BAR was stunning

2004 BAR third driver cars were really cool, especially the Monza practice livery

I would've included Mercedes' original 2020 livery, before they changed it to black. I think the all-black livery worked great but man that 2020 launch design looked stunning

The rokit Williams livery will always be one of my favorites. So damn clean
1997 or 8 Ferrari ran an all black car with a version of the stylised German flag from Michael's helmet on the airbox above his name.
One that never happened was Minadi running a Hooters livery at Indianapolis. Apparently Stoddart was up for it but the FIA weren't (although Indy barred Hooters liveries from the Brickyard NASCAR races at times as well)
That State 555 livery BAR used was absolutely gorgeous. We really should allow tobacco companies to sponsor freely again in F1.
I quite liked the Colgate livery! The bold geometric red blotch was kind of artsy
The dark blue digital camo red bull is badass and should be used by alpha tauri imo ( because the actual red bull livery is pretty good as it is )

The Camo Red Bull is amazing as a livery, would have loved to have seen that on the actual car.
I really like the drinks-can Red Bull livery. I'm glad they've used it in other sports, I think it's quite handsome
The 98 Mclaren in Orange with black sponsors and rims. So simple, effective and so original Mclaren.
The 2018 red bull was already great looking, that black and yellow nose. The dark blue looks sick, the red one was not bad either
Why did Ron Dennis resist the idea to paint the cars orange? Since he bought McLaren F1 from Teddy Mayer in 1980 it was just a name over his own racing team - Project Four. That's why McLaren cars were named MP4/x from that time instead of Mx as they were always used to be. Since Dennis' resign McLaren codes their car like MCLx and embraced orange color.
Toyota's paintjob was easily recognizable throught all seasons. And thats what u want. A car everybody can recognize from half a mile away.
Plain simple and it looked timeless. Beside the silver arrow mclaren design in early to mid 2000 probably one of the coolest.

That silver Force India reminds me of the Hakkinen/Coulthard McLarens.
I think the black and dark red Alfa/Sauber has to be a strong contender but other than that, not much else springs to mind.
