It’s not coming from the GM side of things though.
I don’t know what the backstory is, but people within Liberty really don’t like Michael. That’s what’s been holding their entry back all this time on the F1 side of things (that and the teams vetoing because of prize money dilution, but they’ve resolved that through entry fees most likely.)
I wouldn’t be surprised if him backing down from his position and dropping the name was a tactical move from Michael himself. Once that Concorde agreement has been signed GM/Caddy/Andretti etc can appoint who they want and call themselves whatever they want.

And manufacturers leave as soon as their investment doesn't pan out to their satisfaction, or the company changes direction, or the world's economy takes a downturn. Then they scurry out of F1 like rats on a sinking ship. People who want to race, want to put their blood, sweat and tears into racing in F1 have always made F1 special, not car companies who dabble in it for a few years before leaving.

F1 has a lot of egg on after all of this. Tons of historic brands important to F1's history and current lineup weren't car manufacturers (or at least didn't start that way). McLaren, Williams, Ferrari, Jordan... Andretti is huge in motorsports and Mario is a former world champion. It's really sick how greedy this has all played out. I'm not saying Andretti is faultless here, but common. Meanwhile, Audi's off to an incredibly rough start, Porsche backed out and Renault is dropping out as a supplier. F1 isnt great because of brands, it's great because of individuals that want to go racing. Enzo, Champan, Bruce, Dietrich, Frank Williams and more...

The key takeaway from this is that private teams that weren't grandfathered in are effectively banned now. It seems like no matter how significant you and your brand are to motorsport, even if you bring a massive manufacturer with you and put all the necessary time and resources into proving how dedicated and determined you are to enter, that's still not enough for a new F1 team. You shouldn't need to buy a multi-billion dollar car manufacturer to be allowed entry into F1.
You're right; many of the greatest Formula 1 teams started small only to become notable figures in Formula 1 later. Especially with Red Bull turning Toro Rosso into a cash cow after Dietrich's passing, the current state of Sauber and their controversial title sponsor, and the very embarrassing predicament Renault finds itself in, Formula 1 should be more open to new brands with a genuine passion for motorsport. Say what you want about Bernie Ecclestone. He was far from perfect, but at least he gave small teams, like Haas, a chance to enter Formula 1. Even if they didn't have a household name, that could bring more recognition to Formula 1.

That will depend on two things. The first is that Aston and Mercedes have the contract to supply the safety cars. So, nothing will happen until that contract ends.
Secondly they jave to pay for the privilege. The FIA and F1 see it as marketing as that's exactly what it is. And as such you have to pay large sums of money to them.
Its definitely something I can see happening, though at some point.

To me one of the BIG reasons for the change is the loss of Renault. To this end the GM entry fills the void left behind by Renault pulling out. F1 was lossing something in terms of the appearance of manufacturers in the sport and this maybe was something that they didn't want.
With the two key figures heads leaving the repsective organisations ( FOM and Andretti ), it cleared the way for a "nice" way for this entry to enter the sport.
We all believe that they will struggle for a number of years, but look at some of the teams who have been in the sport a long time and see their struggles. One can only hope that they can find form in four years time. However, let's just hope that they can do better than Sauber/Audi, as to me that is who I fell this entry is simialr to at this point.

If it goes well, they stick around, if they want to pull out they can and a simply rebrand/“sell” to Andretti. I don't have the quotes or stats to prove it, but my gut feeling is that GM's looking at the brands they'll be racing against and putting the brand most like their competitors into that mix. In sportscars and, at least historically, F1, you've got Jaguar, Mercedes, BMW, and so on--luxury brands that have reputable high-performance divisions. Cadillac is GM's answer to that class of competition, both on the track and in terms of market share in road car sales.

I like the idea of more cars on the grid and bringing back the 107% qualifying rule. I realize that no team wants to spend that money only to not race, however as a fan it was very exciting that qualifying really meant qualifying and not just grid position. I’m really curious what this does for Cadillac’s brand. They’ve been in racing for a very long time but I don’t see how racing aligns with their vehicles outside of the CT5-V. I think spinning off the Corvette as a brand and having that be the team name would make more sense, at least to me. Anyway, glad to see another team coming to the grid.

Regardless of how well they do or don't do, this is.....a MODEST win, I guess.
Honestly, I stopped caring about Michael Andretti's feelings the moment he helped put up a charter system around the IndyCar Series (immediately stifling the plans of sportscar racing heroes Pratt & Miller and seriously threatening Prema). However, the fact that an ambitious team with a solid body of work in a variety of other racing divisions only BARELY squeaked into F1 after something like a year and a half of politicking.....just _reeks._
Again, I don't care about Andretti specifically. I care about the fact that literally every single professional racing series has erected a walled garden of some sort around their grids, preventing new teams from building their own legacies and rising through the ranks.
It used to be that new teams could prove they had the competence to compete with the established outfits by posting a lap time fast enough to qualify for the race, but meritocracy is dead.

For second driver, if we pull from Indy, then Palou, O'Ward, or Herta would be solid choices, and McLaughlin might fancy a season or two if given the opportunity. If not, then I'd look at maybe pulling Schumacher (he had pace, was just unreliable, and had a relatively good season with a mentoring driver in a shitbox of a car), Doohan, or take a junior from whichever manufacturer they get their initial engines from. I'd have to check the points awarded for the superlicense, but there might be a WEC driver or two who could qualify by 2026, and Chadwick might still have enough points to qualify if she has a good 2025 NXT season.

Feels like the render could use more yellow. Not the whole thing, but definitely the upper chassis and the halo. Maybe keep a bit of the gradient at the back end of the engine cover. Sides should stay black. Keep it looking sleek. It'll end up looking like a modern take on a Jordan, and I don't think you would see to many complains about that.

Caddy has been involved in racing for a while now. They have an LM heritage with their famous "Le Monstre". As far as modern times go, been doing IMSA since 2017 and expanded into WEC in 2023 with the convergence finally happening. Less known but not less relevant was their only GT3 (a set of regs which conquered the world) car which managed to piss off the most powerful man in sportscar racing and created new regs for GT3.

I’m glad everyone is starting to see that it’s about Andretti, not the project itself. I fucking knew it was just about Andretti from day one. But before 2024 was racing road cars, imsa, single seaters, etc. He's 18 an the best young American driver ive seen since maybe Jeff Gordon. I think he's commited to racing NAscar's #2 series next year, but perhaps GM can move him over to F2 if that's where he'd prefer, but I doubt the NASCAR team that has him signed up as their development driver will want to lose him. He's going to be a huge star.
