They were also mad when Dylan went electric.
I actually can respect setting limitations for yourself and specializing in acoustic style (and I'm almost on the other extreme, in that I get nothing out of playing acoustic). As Ron Swanson said, "Don't half-ass two things; whole-ass one thing." But there's no reason to get defensive about it.

I love those wacky guitars, there is no way on earth I can afford a £1500 guitar, but I might be able to afford £250. Though to be honest I am more likely to build a body with that sort of shape and attach a manufactured neck then spec to taste.

I only played acoustic for years. I played mostly folk music as a solo artist. The electric guitar was intimidating. I practiced so much to be good at acoustic and wanted to perfect my skill set for that. I eventually came to my senses, but i imagine that if someone strictly wants to play bluegrass, or classical, etc., may be perfectly content sticking with what they know.

I started out playing acoustic and then added electric. In my late 20s I completely dropped electric and focused on acoustic for about 12 years. When I decided to add back electric it took me a couple of years to get comfortable with it. That taught me to approach the two completely differently.

I tried an electric, and I still have the gear. But I haven't wanted to play it for years. The playing I do works better with an acoustic. I do regularly amp up my accoustic, and I use effects.

I have one of the Doritos guitar picks. It’s Edwin McCain branded. A bit worn because I used it a bit when I was younger. It’s now in a guitar pick album I set up about a year ago.

While he did have some in person, others were from online, or pictures sent.

If Dylan could go electric anyone can; he didn't give up acoustic. He embraced change. Heavy bands go the other way for their "sensitive" songs bringing in acoustic guitars.

55:09 "Eat your mashed potatoes or you can't have any pudding! How can you have any pudding if you don't ear your ..."
Okay, right here I have so many questions (sorry if you get to these later in the video): Folk of Classical? Steel string or nylon? Or the original animal gut? Smaller traditional-sized body, Martin Dreadnought, or Gibson Jumbo? Archtop/F-hole? (getting awfully close to some electrics!) Are "acoustic guitarists" so open minded that they'll play and even embrace all of these??? What about 12-string acoustics?
I'm fortunate, I have the best acoustic in the $200-$250 range, though I don't play it nearly enough. And it stays in tune!

I was an only acoustic guy for a long time.
Then, 25 years ago I got a yamaha eg112c kits for free from work (safety points). Now there's a base, a PRS se Paul's Guitar, some other weird off brands of electric guitars, a pile of pedals, various amps for each along with the dreadnought, flamenco and classical guitars... My wife says I gotta stop, but you know.... I got GAS like a ate a 40 lb bag of frijoles and a couple bags of cherries in one sitting! 🙄😬 (and I still can't play worth a damn)
    What a depressing song...

I have two Yamaha TA's and they're great. I have electrics too, plenty of them, but my go to is always an acoustic. Reason being, acoustic instruments are more intimate, lighter, and portable. Acoustics require discipline and hand strength in order to sound good. Electrics are not that. You need "gear" and amps etc. In short, electrics require "baggage" to play. You can plug in an electric and play slop (I won't mention any names). If you crank up the volume, no one may even notice. I compose on an acoustic, even my surf tunes. Acoustic music is different than electric generally speaking. Electrics excel at volume, and have more voicing variety with the aid of boxes of different types and I like that too, but music is all about context and genre and electrics have their own niche. They can't do it all. Acoustics can't either if you want to use the same argument though most all Blues and early Rock were first played on acoustic and semi-acoustic-electrics. The genesis of rock started as acoustic guitar music. When it comes to guitars I'm AC/DC depending on context and expectations.

@22:11 I had no idea what a Blacklund was or what it looked like, all I know is my inner child wanted that guitar immediately. These guys trying to guess who the market is have been imbedded in guitar world far too long and missed the point by some distance. It's awesome looking. I can imagine a scene in original Star Trek where some red shirt is playing this while Uhuru bangs a tambourine and Captain Kirk attempts to communicate meaningfully with the music planet through song.

45 min mark... I play both acoustic and electric. Each has its own vibe and feeling. I play MOSTLY electric now but as if it's an acoustic as amps are BOMB these days compared to 25 years ago. I love reverb or delay. Some chorus... Hell, I played an ovation elite acoustically and was able to play Eruption o
n it before i broke my neck, back, arm and hip. Now? I can rip Eruption on it better than before as I had to relearn how to play again. Yngwie on acoustic? no prob! He does it also!. Marcin? welp... I don't have 5 inducers throughout my guitar. That kid ids on a higher level. I have a custom Hamer floyd rose i turned into an astrological ensemble with silver and copper suns, moons, stars etc.. The only stuff I can play on that beast is hard rock and metal BUT...sounds amazing through studio as an acoustic also! If you can play an acoustic, electric is easy. Electric has more options.. acoustic takes more talent to entertain.

    • @bullyakker
      @bullyakker Місяць тому

Perhaps the question is... can an electric only player still hold a vibe playing an acoustic which takes more raw knowledge and thought to make a tune? Hmmm...

Acoustic Guitarists ....and the Electric Guitar. Many start on an Electric Guitar. I did NOT! I wanted to play the electric Guitar and I still consider myself an Electric Guitar Player. I do play acoustic electrics to add that "flavor" to some of my music, but I do NOT like acoustic guitars! Acoustic Guitarists can be Purists....and not want anything to do with the Electric Guitar thinking that they are an insult to the purity of their instruments. I get that. Acoustic guitars just don't sound or play what I imagine, most of the time, in the creation of my Music. Lets' ROCK!

You asked in a shouty voice 'why are acoustic guitar players such cowards & so defensive?' (repeatedly) etc ......... there might just be your answer. 😉😄
I can't play any style of guitar much at all so do not have a dog in the fight, but I was a live sound engineer at folk festivals for many years, and acoustic players do use effects. I especially remember one duo who at one point in their set, instead of one of the acoustic guitars, started playing heavy metal slide, on a mandolin and it was superb!

  • @michaelbirk3055

Acoustic only... I get it. I went fully acoustic for almost 20 yrs in the middle of my life. Now I'm back to the 'normal' 98% electric life. I think it's comparable to acoustic vs. electronic (digital) piano, or acoustic drums vs. electronic drums... I get it. Exclusively acoustic people are not cowards, they just don't care for the quite, to extremely different sound of an electric.>>> I saw Joe Bonamassa live and he did about a fifteen minute acoustic spot. The crowd went enthusiastically wild, but I couldn't wait for it to end. I can't stand the amplified sound of an acoustic guitar. Again, anything acoustic vs. electric is very different. If someone doesn't like that difference... I get it.

Lots of electric players refuse to play acoustics. Also, while they have the same interface, they are not the same instrument. Requires some different skills and completely different hand control. It like saying you can play bass because you can play guitar. You can play around on a bass and understand how it works in general, but it's not the same as playing bass.
Furthermore, you cannot call them cowards until you own a keytar. It's the law.
Also, if you play bluegrass (not new grass like that Billy Strings guy), it can get socially awkward if you are seen with an electric in public (unless it's a standup electric bass, or you play mandolin in Michael Cleaveland's band).
Play whatever folk instruments is fine, but if you didn't play banjo when you got married, it's a lot to expect your spouse to accept later.
Why hate on Martins? What happened to trying things and having fun?

The answer Segovia is reported as giving when asked about the electric guitar was:
Electric guitars are an abomination. Whoever heard of an electric violin, electric cello or, for that matter, an electric singer?
Segovia apparently made this comment when he was asked what he thought of the Beatles and it is quoted in 'The Beatles, Words without Music' by Rick Friedman, published in 1968. By this time electric guitars had been in use for many years - also 'electrified' singers in dance bands etc - though the type of electrified violins and cellos we now see commonly and the close miking of singers that we now see even in classical productions have (I think) developed subsequently.

Acoustic guitar players are afraid of the price, and buying all the bogus equipment and having and and sea water wash over their amp and cabinet and having the speaker cone roast at a campfire, and buying pedals, cords, and many amps, many different speak cabinets and more pedals. For acoustic a twelve string, a dred, and a 000 body is all you need, maybe a resonator. No Tele, Strat, LP, PRS, 335, HUM, PAF, SIngle coil, P-90, Filetrons, and endless other shit to buy, store and resell. No ranting neighbors, no electric bill price jump, no roadies for 4x12 cabinets. Our costs are the same: setups and lessons. We aoustic players are worried about losing the trees in the forest. What am I scared of ? Buying an electric and after showing my wife answering the question, "why did you buy that"? I also mostly buy second-hand now a days.
