By exemple, the legions are not only a Roman structure, same has the rank, Commander is a rank of some armies, but in other, it's not. I personnally find this much more interesting because a simple reconstruction of the USA army would be quiet weird.
The whole assigned corporal thing dates back to WW1 is the British army. Corporals were basically hand picked or assigned/promoted on a the spot and they had a lot more command/responsibility over the unit compared to modern corporals in any military today.
Cheers for discussing this subject mate. I have a few things that I believe need more explanation into however. For instance, the rank of Corporal was a junior NCO position. Corporal’s duties entailed such things as: • They were the assistant squad leader and would fill in as Squad leader in the Sergeant's absence. • Conducted all administration within the squad. • Commanded the support by fire (SBF) within the squad. • Understudied the Sergeant • Reported to the Platoon Sergeant (sergeant major) periodically in regards to the squads administration. And lead a fire team of four troopers including himself. Also, a platoon sergeant (Sergent Major) was classed as a Senior NCO position. Some of the duties as follows: He would assist and mentor the platoon leader. Carry out all discipline within the platoon. Was the SBF Commander in a platoon attack/assault. And Coordinated all administration through the 2IC’s (Corporals) from each squad within the platoon. (Ammo and rations.)
In the U.S. Army, Corporal is the worst rank in the Army. All of the responsibility (of a NCO) and none of the pay. CPLs get tagged for sh*tty NCO jobs the "real" NCOs don't want to do, and their (paygrade) peers don't respect them.
Based on these numbers, the Soviet Russia's Red Army during World War II was much bigger and it took literally millions of soldiers to fight one country on a single planet.
To take over a planet it would not be a matter of numbers or else it would be ww1 all over again. To take over a planet you need to creaple it's key points like cutting out the legs of an ATAT.
Steve Lord the clones also had literal Gods helping them to win battles though. And they had far more advanced weapons which meant if they were smart they did not have to rely on numbers
If we took the number of Systems Armies, counted the number of Sector Armies in each, counted the number of Corps in each of those and then times'd that by the number of clones in each Corps there would be quite a large number of clones.
"There's two types of Lieutenant, the Lieutenant, and the Second Lieutenant, both commanded platoons, and while Lieutenant is the higher rank, nothing is specified between the two otherwise" Sounds about right.
It's likely that First Lieutenants were also second in command of a Company, so in that case it would likely be a First Lieutenant second in command to the Captain and the 4 Platoons each being lead by a Second Lieutenant, so it would likely depend if it is a stand alone Platton or 1 of 4 Platoons in a Company, if stand alone the leader is a First Lieutenant, if part of a Company it is a Second Lieutenant. Or it could actually just be Platoons are always lead by Second Lieutenants and First Lieutenants are always second in command of a Company.
I mean if the rank structure that anything like the military, the 2LT would be in charge of the platoon while the 1LT becomes a company executive officer
The Karen Traviss Clone Wars book explained that Rex turned down a promotion to Battalion Commander. He personally led Torrent Company but acted as Skywalker's personal aide, and may have had authority to command other units when their leading officer wasn't present.
What had confused me the most before was the coloured phase 1 clone rankings just disappearing in the Clone Wars tv series. With this video in mind I guess all the phase 1 clone sergeants and lieutenants from TCW got their rank through promotion, which would at least give an explanation as to why they wouldn't have the coloured stripes. So basically from my understanding; phase 1 clones bred for a certain rank have the corresponding coloured stripe, but clones who are ranked b/c they were promoted keep their standard white armour (and probably customize it)
I think the better head canon is that the GAR removed obvious indicators of rank from front line soldiers. Clone commanders appear to be the exception, and this could be because they weren't supposed to be fighting on the frontlines. Obviously, the truth is that its easier to make a show if you only need to have one model for the clones. It's why in the first season there are white troopers fighting next to named clones who have battalion paint schemes. Only in the later seasons with the money being thrown at Clone Wars did they actually make "unique" models for different troopers.
It seems like an incredibly bad idea to paint bright stripes on specific clones during war. Pretty much just targets for the droids saying "hey this one is *really* important shoot this one first!" It makes more sense to color code them based on what unit/Garrison/battalion etc. they serve in, like they did in clone wars. A colored stripe, small, could be added somewhere on their armor to signify rank, but not massive stripes. Chests, shoulders, a couple inches long. Very cool design, bad tactically.
@@ANite-vx1vk Yeah this is exactly what I thought happened over time. Especially when you look at episode 3 as well where there is the full kashykk camo army.
Or maybe what happened is 5 minutes after the battle of Geonosis ended, everyone looked at all the Officers and NCOs conveniently marked for targeting by the enemy and told them to clean their armour. What the Kaminoans thought was a good idea at the start was done away with in the first week or two.
High Admiral Thorn What? 327th Star Corps and the 212th are two different legions, 327th is yellow and 212th is orange as you said. Is that what you meant?
dasjager you stupid or something? He said 7th Star Corps, not 327th. The 7th was commanded by Cody and 327th was commanded by Bly. And the 212th Battalion was a unit within the 7th Corps.
Captain Rex and Commander Cody are like four ranks apart, yet they're shown to be peers with equivalent level of seniority and command roughly equal sized units. I mean, I get they're brothers, they've fought together and commanded alongside one another, but not once does Rex in the entire series ever refer to Cody as "sir" or ever receive any orders from him.. There's letting your guard down for someone you trust and then there's just blatant disrespect for the regulations of your army. I suppose this is explained by them both being ARC Troopers and having fought in so many battles together, but seriously, Cody is technically about as far above Rex in the chain of command as Rex is above a fresh recruit, yet not only they forget this, but it seems like sometimes even the show itself forgets they aren't the same rank.
He was actually third in command to Ahsoka and Anakin. I don't think Rex was promoted after Ahsoka left the Jedi Order. However, after Rex refused Order 66 and committed treason, Appo was promoted to Commander.
@@ocularzombie6679 I don't think appo was ever actually promoted nor rex demoted, they all died within hours of order 66, and rex was assumed to have also died.

Fun fact about the clone wars: Captain Rex/Commander in season 7 of clone wars. He had a mix of phase I and II armor welded in (phase I had more armor but phase II was lighter as he mixed both to get armor and light weight mobility) you can even see were he welded his armor in!

Loved the video Geetsly's! The Four units I'd rather be with are one's that I came up with myself. They are the 22nd Volcano Corps commanded by Commander Lava (CC-1323) with a strength of 20 Regiments of 46,080 Troops; The 619th Attack Battalion commanded by Commander Junior (CC-6198) with a pretty standard strength of 576 Troops; The 98th Elite Corps commanded by Commander Miller (CC-1438) with a standard strength of 36,864 Troops; Finally the 82nd Airborne Legion commanded by Commander Taylor (CC-2263-80) with a standard strength of 9,216 Troops. These units will of course have their own colors for their armor as listed below: • 22nd Volcano Corps - Think about Ki-Adi-Mundi's 21st Nova Corps, but with Black and Gray instead of Dark Red and White. • 619th Attack Battalion - Think about the 212th Attack Battalion, but with a Dark Red-Orange instead of the Yellow or Gold. • 98th Elite Corps - Think about the 41st Elite Corps, but with Olive Green markings instead of the Dark Forest Green. • 82nd Airborne Legion - If you watch SorensiC SteeL and the men of the 101st Airborne division, think of them but with Khaki Drab markings instead of the Green/Dark Green that they have. Don't ask about how I came up with the units, commander names or the Clone Designations, unless you really want to know! I just came up with some good sounding unit names and colors when I watched SorensiC SteeL's 3 plus hour long Joint Op with the 212th and the 101st Airborne division. The names and designations I just came up with, so hopefully I didn't misplace anything or something.
I always thought they were using the real life naval system, i.e. a place where commanders exist and are a thing as a rank. You still have your lieutenants and captains, but things are slightly switched around. In addition, irl naval captains are roughly equivalent to colonels, which always made more sense to me as to why Captain Rex would be directly reporting to and associating with Jedi generals.
I think I personally would enjoy your videos more if you linked your more general points to specific examples of what we see in the tv show or movies. For instance, if you discussed who were the high ranking jedi generals. Or what were some of the regiments we see. idk just a thought
Plus we don't truly know where Regimental Commander falls, we just amuse they outrank Battalion Commanders since Regiments are larger than Battalions and contain 4 Battalions, but the is a possibility that it is like First Sergeant and Master Gunnery Sergeant, where they are equal but separate ranks.
As much as I love the Clones aesthetic and the way the officers and commanders look. I can’t help but think how it’s a terrible idea to visually differentiate your commanding officers. It’s just easier for snipers to know who to shoot first. I’m probably reading far too deep into a show about lasers and space wizards.
How do clone designations work? At most you could have 10,000 clones in each rank since it's rank then 4 digits. Were these designations localized to only the sector army they were in or what?
They don’t always have 4 digits though. And the writers for Clone Wars couldn’t even be consistent with some clones numbers, so there’s no finding an answer to that.
CT-43/002, CT-43/76-9155, CT-44/444, CT-5/373, CT-6/774, CT-6200/8901 and CT-66-3232 were some of the canon or legends numbers that went above four digits. They might be localised via sector army, or there might be clones with ridiculously long serial numbers. We don't know! c:
Also, I believe the 1LT was much like the US Army’s. They more often than not we’re 2IC’s to the Company Commander (Captain). However, as senior LT’s they could also be posted into specialists platoons such as Heavy Weapons, Recon, Snipers, Mortars, Pioneers, Signals ect.
personally squad for the flexibility of the numbers and tight spaces a squad can fit behind in scenarios similar to infiltration, sabotage, information gathering, and secrete missions, and small scale hit and run tactics.
Well then I can say i'm confused, demented, bewildered, muddled, addled, befuddled, disoriented, disorientated, at sea, unbalanced, unhinged, senile and possibly going insane.
I think the most confusing thing about the rank structure is the fact that the 501st had a commando in appo but captain Rex who was just in charge of torrent company within the 501st seemed to have more command authority and worked directly with Jedi general Skywalker on battle plans
Well Appo was a Sergeant during the Battle of Umbara and I think he was given the rank of Clone Commander after Rex went to the Siege of Mandalore with Ahsoka... Though as to why the 501st did not have a Clone Commander till then does not make any sense
Appo was a sergeant until after Order 66. Captain Rex had previously turned down a promotion to battalion commander and though he only officially led Torrent Company, he also served as Skywalker's second in command.
Regiment is a training organisational grouping. Like 4 battalions of infantry might be in the administered by the same regiment, but they are probably mixed into several brigades made up of different types of units (infantry, artillery, Armoyred) a corps is actually the same as a regiment, and typically a country either uses the corps system or the regimental system.
I personally liked the color ranking system, far more then the rank badges we see in the Officers, that were only on the chest, it shows who is in charge and who isn't, without the need for a specialized computer in your helmet telling you who's who, however, perhaps have green for enlisted, but strip form to show the grade of the rank, like in our world, as as red could be for officers, more strips means higher commissioned rank.
“ We're not programmed. You have to learn to make your own decisions.” -Captain Rex Well thats too bad he should have went into the future to see order 66
It might sound bad or something, but on the game called ROBLOX. There are military groups, which there are many Republic Groups. If you join a group and you look at the ranks, you easily learn them.
The main confusing part imo is the battalion level plus. Battalions in our world are commanded by majors and regiments by colonels. A brigade is commanded by a brigadier general and from then on generals of different titles. Since Jedi were intended to be incorporated as "generals" the clone ranks from battalion commander onward got grouped into the very abstract term "commander" of varying degree for exceptional clones as to reserve positions of command upwards for jedi.
1:16 The black armor clone general is fanon. In fact a lot of images in this video are just fan art. the 31st Nexu Battalion where it looks like you discovered the rank of Major is non canon and not even licensed. It was made by a fan.
Captain Rex was a commander until Ahsoka showed up. I think the way it works, is if a Jedi has a Padawan then the clone that would have been a commander gets bumped down to captain. And the Padawan is essentially becomes the commander but the Clone captain would still have a Commander level leadership role as well as all the duties of a commander. So essentially padawans get a high rank and do none of the command paperwork, God damn freeloaders. Haha
I agree with you, if you remember back in that long episode of Clone Wars that introduced Ahsoka, she still boasts to Rex how she outranks him. However, Rex snaps back at her saying experience out ranks everything.
The Karen Traviss Clone Wars novel explains that Captain Rex turned down a promotion to Battalion Commander and remained in-charge of Torrent Company. Anakin Skywalker chose him as his personal aide, and sometimes Rex led other troopers when their commanding officers were absent. Ahsoka was fresh off the boat and hadn't proven she was worthy of commanding a battalion, and Rex, seeing the fresh-faced officer who hadn't assumed proper command, basically laughed her attempts off and schooled her.
I would have wanted to command a Corps. Mainly because it’s big enough to pack a pretty decent punch, while also being small enough to be effectively commanded by what I can describe myself as more of an average tactician.
Thanks for the info on your history channel you have, I never knew you had that channel. Just subscribed. The episodes look pretty cool. Going to start from the beginning.
there are ranks and there are position. a captain can be a battalion commander. lieutenant is a company commander, a 2nd lieutenant is a platoon commander, a general can be a brigade, regimental or division commander. naval ranks are different but they are mostly tied to ships.

Cheers for discussing this subject mate.
I have a few things that I believe need more explanation into however.
For instance, the rank of Corporal was a junior NCO position. Corporal’s duties entailed such things as:
• They were the assistant squad leader and would fill in as Squad leader in the Sergeant's absence.
• Conducted all administration within the squad.
• Commanded the support by fire (SBF) within the squad.
• Understudied the Sergeant
• Reported to the Platoon Sergeant (sergeant major) periodically in regards to the squads administration.
And
Coordinated all administration through the 2IC’s (Corporals) from each squad within the platoon.
God, I just love this Battlefront intro. so much memories...
Based on these numbers, the Soviet Russia's Red Army during World War II was much bigger and it took literally millions of soldiers to fight one country on a single planet.
The scale in star wars has never been consistent
To take over a planet it would not be a matter of numbers or else it would be ww1 all over again. To take over a planet you need to creaple it's key points like cutting out the legs of an ATAT.
Plus the Clones had space wizards
Steve Lord the clones also had literal Gods helping them to win battles though. And they had far more advanced weapons which meant if they were smart they did not have to rely on numbers
If we took the number of Systems Armies, counted the number of Sector Armies in each, counted the number of Corps in each of those and then times'd that by the number of clones in each Corps there would be quite a large number of clones.
"There's two types of Lieutenant, the Lieutenant, and the Second Lieutenant, both commanded platoons, and while Lieutenant is the higher rank, nothing is specified between the two otherwise"
Sounds about right.
They just follow each other, that's why they can't use a map
You should do a video on General Cards since he is the only confirmed Clone General to exist
Cloud5SS Marshall*
Does that Clone Wars MMO game count as canon material? In that case, blinged-troopers exist.
Godsdj I do not believe it does.
No just no, he is not cannon friendly.
Cloud5SS General cards is not considered canon nor legends material. The highest rank a clone can achieve is Marshall Commander
Even though Rex was ranked a Captain, I'm sure most of us can agree his experience gave him a far superior rank in our books 🔥🔥

It’s kinda weird why he never was promoted to Commander, but meh.
@@kirby7294 Maybe he refused promotions to stay as a more field centered role. Wouldn't surprise me from Rex's character.

Pretty much just targets for the droids saying "hey this one is *really* important shoot this one first!"
It makes more sense to color code them based on what unit/Garrison/battalion etc. they serve in, like they did in clone wars.
8:09 the downed AT-AT hurts me.
What were they thinking.
lol that’s actually hilarious and I didn’t even notice
I would command the 7th star corp since i just love the orange boys in the 212th
High Admiral Thorn What? 327th Star Corps and the 212th are two different legions, 327th is yellow and 212th is orange as you said. Is that what you meant?
dasjager 212 is a battalion
dasjager you stupid or something? He said 7th Star Corps, not 327th. The 7th was commanded by Cody and 327th was commanded by Bly. And the 212th Battalion was a unit within the 7th Corps.
It's the 7th sky corp which is why he probably got confused
@@TinyGiraffes Appo lived, he's retconned into ROTS actually with him being the one who was slashed across the chest by the kid on the landing platform I do believe.
@@ocularzombie6679 That's still two down the chain from Cody lol
The thing was, the 501st was much more flexible then the 212th. Cody understood that in the 501st Rex was basically treated like a Marshal commander and they were also freinds. In the 501st, if you can actullly help your considered high ranked. Even if your rank is actually High.
I love how as the ranks got higher, everything got more confusing
Ok so all plain white clone have a rank but some have a rank w command that’s nice to know
Fun fact about the clone wars: Captain Rex/Commander in season 7 of clone wars. He had a mix of phase I and II armor welded in (phase I had more armor but phase II was lighter as he mixed both to get armor and light weight mobility) you can even see were he welded his armor in!

I LOVE THE CLASSIC BATTLEFRONT LOADING SCREEN INTRO DUUUDE NOSTALGIAAAAA
Indeed
Omg the nostalgia your intro brought! Thank you for that. Rip battlefront original
These units will of course have their own colors for their armor as listed below:
• 22nd Volcano Corps - Think about Ki-Adi-Mundi's 21st Nova Corps, but with Black and Gray instead of Dark Red and White.
That intro was just so nostalgic! I loved it!
According to wiki, Clone Generals did exist during the Clone Wars but usually managed the military burecracy rather than actual armies
That is a seriously og battlefront intro. This guys awesome

That intro brings back so many flashbacks 😊
I think I personally would enjoy your videos more if you linked your more general points to specific examples of what we see in the tv show or movies. For instance, if you discussed who were the high ranking jedi generals. Or what were some of the regiments we see. idk just a thought
3:45 This is actually reminiscent of the US Army. In regular infantry a major is almost always the 2IC of a battalion and a LC is the commander.
I’d want to be a Jedi general who’d command the galactic marines or an arc trooper general
Trying to relate this to the USMC rank structure is like cancer
I’m on the Army. I know what you mean 😂😂😂 the whole time I want to yell at this dude👀😂
Gree, Bacara, Neyo and Bly are Marshall commanders as well
And rex even thow he was a captain at first
@@zebwhitt8056 Rex was never in command of a Corp. Marshall Commanders are leaders of Corps not Legions.
0:20 that loading screen took me so far back to my childhood. Thank you
As a new viewer, i love the Battlefront style opening and it was a real throwback
Can you do other special forces groups? Like the rebels spec-ops marines or Nimbus commando
It's not that weird when you consider how often they fight more like it's the 19th or early 20th century than modern warfare
Cody: “order 66? Bet. Ayo fire on obi wan lol”

WHOAAAA was that intro thing with the zoom in to a sector of the galaxy from the original battlefront? That nostalgia hit me HARD
8:43 there's a picture of stormtroopers while he's talking about the republic.
We don't know! c:
CT-55/11-9009 Captain “Jag”, CT-0000/1010 Sergeant “Fox”, CT-27-5555 “Fives”, and CT-21-0408 “Echo” are more examples from both legends and cannon.
And there’s more, like ct-00-2010 “droidbait”
0:04 Kpop fans:”which one looks cuter!” Kpop singer:
bruh the battlefront zoom in sequence brought me BACK
Also, I believe the 1LT was much like the US Army’s.
Omg your intro brought back memories of the og battle front 😂😂😂
Well then I can say i'm confused, demented, bewildered, muddled, addled, befuddled, disoriented, disorientated, at sea, unbalanced, unhinged, senile and possibly going insane.
I know what you mean. As a former British soldier this rank structure has left me swallowing my own vomit.
@@godsdj7316 When did he reject a promotion??
@@TeemoForLife Clone Wars novel by Karen Traviss that covered the events of the Clone Wars movie. :)

This is my first time watching your videos and your intro unlocked a lot of great memories for me.
Wonderful video, starsim just got slapped in the face by this one. Also very happy to finally hear a "jhee" instead of a "jhay" in G.A.R.
“ We're not programmed. You have to learn to make your own decisions.” -Captain Rex
Well thats too bad he should have went into the future to see order 66
It might sound bad or something, but on the game called ROBLOX. There are military groups, which there are many Republic Groups. If you join a group and you look at the ranks, you easily learn them.
It’s not a kids game if you join a military group, gets very strict and you need to study your formations, ranks, etc.
The black armored ARC general is actually from the Star Wars game Clone Wars Adventures but is not a canonical rank
There were sergeants, then lieutenants, then captains, then commanders, then generals... and then there was Fordo.
Yes, Fordo surpasses all.
8:37 anyone else picturing a pokeball rn?
I would have wanted to command a Corps. Mainly because it’s big enough to pack a pretty decent punch, while also being small enough to be effectively commanded by what I can describe myself as more of an average tactician.
Thanks for the info on your history channel you have, I never knew you had that channel. Just subscribed. The episodes look pretty cool. Going to start from the beginning.
A bit weird that they used "4 system" rather then standard "3 system". Just saying.
Space is a big place it can fit that .
When Star Wars actually becomes a History Class in school
"There are two types of lieutenants. . . "
Yeah, good and bad.
0:20 I love the battlefront 1 loading sound
there are ranks and there are position. a captain can be a battalion commander. lieutenant is a company commander, a 2nd lieutenant is a platoon commander, a general can be a brigade, regimental or division commander. naval ranks are different but they are mostly tied to ships.
Clone Troopers > Storm Troopers
Go how ranks, you're drunk
But yeah it's pretty confusing lol
This is the crap I wish I learned in school.
