MATERIALS:
• empty squeezable plastic water bottle w/ tight lid
• enough water to fill the bottle (tap water is fine)
• four (4) sugar cubes
• four (4) paperclips
• two (2) toothpicks (wood ones work best)
• 1 teaspoon of cinnamon (ground)
• two (2) different colors of vinyl electrical tape (you'll need at least 100m of length per tape)
• transparent tape (at least four feet)
• an assortment of ketchup packets
• small metal bowl (make sure it's not too warm!)
• pencil (doesn't have to be #2) that has been left over night in a dish of salt

I've found that this experiment works much better with just half a teaspoon of cinnamon
I ran out of cinnamon on my roll back can. Had to use cardamom instead. Just to be safe I poured the whole jar in a giant spoon.

Last time I tried this I forgot to leave my pencil in salt overnight and the experiment failed. It's a crucial step that I'd often overlooked, so I thank you for the clarification.

I cooked the pencil at 375 for 35 minutes. Seemed to work best for me. Let me know what results you guys found out with your experiments!

I did 350 for 35 minutes and that also pretty much did the job. The effect of its rigidity at that cook time had an effect that I wasn’t expecting but I wouldn’t call it a game breaker.

Thank goodness for this video, I was running out of things to use 100m of my vinyl tape for! Don't forget that 4ft of transparent tape!
This brings back some really old childhood memories - back in the day, nose drops used to come with a tiny glass pipette separate from the bottle/lid. No issue with finding the right sauce - just evacuate the right amount of air from the pipette. You could calibrate is precisely enough to not even need a squeezable bottle, just filling a glass one to the brim a pressing on the bottleneck was enough to send the diver down.
I didn't know what to do with the cinnamon so I ate it all in one go.

It took me some time to find some of the things I had around the house and my car broke down a few days ago so I had to walk to the store to get a few things. In the late 70's I was given a toy like this by my Aunt. The diver was a sub. It had a book or claw on it. There were little treasures on the bottom so you had to squeeze and catch one of the items. Like a lot of families we didn't have a lot, so you remember the gifts like this that stand out. Thank you Aunt Doreen.

I have always used a ball-point pen cap with a little lump of plasticine covering the hole, adjusting the amount of plasticine to create slightly positive buoyancy. Works a treat.

The materials to make a Cartesian Diver made it sound so exiting and interesting, but to my surprise no ground cinnamon, sugar cubes, paper clips, tooth picks, tapes, or a pencil that has been left over night in a dish of salt were not used in the making of this. My curiosity has not been satisfied.

This guy has such a quirky sense of humour...he's pretty awesome. His videos used to annoy me and I'd switch to another channel - but the more you watch, the more he grows on you! As a high school physics teacher, I also like the casual way he introduces physics concepts in a natural way, without people even realising they're being prepared for a more formal education in physics later on. The size of the buoyant force, pressure, forces having directions, gases being compressible and liquids not,...there's a lot to "unpack" here ; ) Another good one is his video on the rolling-back cylinder toy (elastic potential energy, mass having momentum and resisting change in motion, ...good stuff).
