Developed by Irrational Games, published by Sierra Entertainment, SWAT 4 was released in April, 2005 (NA). The expansion, The Stetchkov Syndicate, was released in February, 2006. SWAT 4 is an intense tactical shooter where you lead a squad of five team members on twenty missions in various locations in the fictional East Coast city of Fairview. SWAT 4 is much darker in tone than SWAT 3 and does introduce some welcome improvements. But the real question is how does it compare to SWAT 3?
For this review we will be taking a look at the original SWAT 4, The Stetchkov Syndicate expansion, and three mods - the H.S.M. Enhancements Mod v3.0, the SAS Mod v1.1 for SWAT 4 Expansion (TSS), and the SWAT 4 Remake v1.3.1.

hey, what happened to the music in the main menu of the remake 1.3 and the briefing voices? even the quick commands are mute while everything else is making sound.... i had 1.4.1 but the fucking mod was glitches whereas the enemy models in the main menu looked incomplete and the control mapping was all over the place. the default keys are normal but they have been completely renamed making it difficult to now what key does what. instead of walking forward, its Strafe Left even though its still Walking Forward by default..... idk what happened but the mapping wasnt like that before i deleted the game for space....

I think back in 2005 terrorism in NYC was still too sensitive subject so they made up a fictional city. Still an awesome game. I remember making a real troll mission where nurses and bums were elite fighters with full morale and those body armored terrorists were the hostages. The setting caught my friends off guard a few times

The game actually is set in New York Fairview is just a made up suburb for the one mission with the serial killer

@Anonymous Unknown It's an old game from 2005. You should be able to run it decently at the very least with even the cheapest modern laptop.
One feature you might not have noticed from Swat 3 that was not carried over into Swat 4 was the incredibly detailed bullet penetration system which would take calibre, material type and thickness into account for nearly every surface on the map and allow for bullets to pierce multiple objects before stopping (endangering hostages and civilians in certain circumstances).
Door wedges are amazing! You can prevent hostiles from surprising you from other doors you've closed, prevent them from fleeing, and just to secure doors if there's a possibility people can come up at you from behind. They're a real lifesaver in some occasions.
Door Wedges is a must if you go for complete non-lethal. It's amazing.
I would say that, door wedges are very useful, for me at least. Once you place them, you prevent suspects from fleeing to other rooms. I carry at least 5 door wedges with my team!
Yeah they are useful but not everyone knows how to use them properly
I use them on almost every mission, and I use a lot of them too. All my teammates have a 3 pack on the SEF mod. They are heavy but definitely worth it and necessary.
This game with this mod is still amazing. Holding my breath for Ready or Not ^^

I may be late to the party, but as a SWAT 4 player, I would say Door wedges are the most useful tool.
They lock the doors and make them impenetrable for suspects, as a result you can use this to funnel them into a corner as they tend to retreat when SWAT arrives or prevent them from ambushing you while you are clearing a different wing.
A lot of the maps have doors where suspects can loop around and come up behind you, door wedges can deny them that abillity :P

they def are, but i usually just keep 1 in my equipment, and kinda hope other ppl are carying w them ( I mostly play swat 4 in Coop) ,its def an important toold but in the end i choose fast movement and low weight and bulk

Door wedges are handy for large rooms with lots of suspects
When you enter, some of them will usually try to run into another room to catch you off guard later, but with wedges you keep them trapped and easier to nutralize.

Back in the time, this was the real deal. I used to play this a lot back in 2008 and i even played with it years after it. With a good team, the COOP multiplayer is the best tactical gaming experience you can ever have. Of course it's need time to learn which kind of equipment is the best for the actual map, but after a few rounds when you get familiar with the map, it becomes really easy if you work together with the others. Great game, what a shame nobody ever tried to recreate this gem or make a spiritual successor.
Unfortunately i don't have much time to play with it anymore, but sometimes we come together with the old friends and play a couple of rounds together. It's still a great and fun game.
Agreed. Never tried the multiplayer or really got into it back in the day but it's a shame they don't make them like this anymore.

Oh man I remember playing SWAT 3 when I was young, a couple years ago I installed this and I was pleased I could still arrest everyone without losing anyone, but it got boring very quick.
Awesome video, still after these last years! Just wanted to say, like you, I was in love with Swat 3 since I picked it up as a kid. While Swat 4 is more "game-y", I can't recommend the new SEF 7.0 release coupled with the First Responders mod. This combo provided new life to the game and made playing through the campaign a whole blast, over again. Hope you get the chance to check it out sometime, and keep up the good work!

20:13 Well Noah Antwiler would have loved that feature. Especially with mission 11 where you got guys with shotguns in hotel bathrooms trained on the door and you're forced to either have your guys rip it open and get shot or you yourself rip it open and lose points because you shot someone before shouting at them to surrender.

I still play a ton of Swat 3/4 and R6:Gold. I would play any of those any day of the week over a battleground type of game. Give me tactics over PVP anyday.
There really should be more shooters like these.

Good reviews. I bought Swat 3 and 4 (GOG sale) after watching your review, and I'm going to rebuy Ravenshield during sale. I bought the original when it came out. My biggest issue with Ravenshield was that it just seemed like the whole game was a training session... Guys just standing around, waiting for me to come in, OR repeatedly coming the same way causing a pile of bodies. I'd live to see a remake where AI was immensely smart. Running through doors, and locking them from behind. Shooting under cars etc, I'd love the audio from Siege too, to hear their footsteps... I want it to be terrifying to play.
+glem xzcc I agree. They do just kind of stand around and it's made up for by their quick reaction times.
Try some ai mods for Raven Shield. They can make the terrorist ai seem more dynamic
Great video man. I have been long searching for the next "SWAT3" experience. So far have not found it. Takedown: Red Sabre was terrible. All Rainbow Six games now are taking an arcade run and gun approach. I have recently purchased early access to Ground Branch, unfortunately its a broken mess for me right now.
Fingers crossed with get "SWAT5" soon.
Check out 'Ready or Not' then. It is SWAT 4's spiritual successor and may be the next best tactical shooter game.

I highly recommend you and all to try swat 4 multiplayer modes like VIP, Barricade suspects and Rapid Deployment then review SWAT 4 again, because SWAT 4 is the best tactical shooting competitive game.

+Gaming Pastime You should check out the *Elite Force* mod; the developer has resurrected features that were intended for the original release, but were never completed, such as traps and picking up drug bags. He's done a whole load of other tweaks to make it more realistic while honouring the original game.

Yea door wedges are pretty useful for me i tried them in the hotel of children ir some shit you know the mission where u have a cult and its pretty fun to lock the building up from every door split enemies one by one and just take em down without killing anyone,so yea door wedges can be pretty useful

I'm so glad there are still people around who feel the same way I do about the SWAT genre.. Tactical shooters are my favorite and don't come around often or at all.. I like that you reviewed multiple (game changing) mods in one entire video, kept me watching for the whole 28 minutes.. Great review!
Swat 4's AI is definitely a downgrade when looking at Swat 3 and that's unfortunate... But the multiplayer aspect still is very enjoyable, even nowadays there are servers running that encourage tactical gaming. Too bad you didn't have a chance on trying out the SSF mod, this was one of the most interesting ones for me at least. Things are faster paced, the only thing I don't like about it is the difficulty. Suspects react slower and overall it becomes too easy. I'd say most mods are multiplayer based, as its main appeal was Coop multiplayer. Also heard the SSF mod is quite buggy when it comes to the singleplayer.
King George it's a shame but maybe some day we'll get a tactical shooter like SWAT 3 and 4 or even Rainbow Six 3.

Actually SWAT 4 AI is simply outstanding and to this day it brings most AI in modern shooters to shame.
The suspect in SWAT 4 and civilian AI have their own individual self-preservation personality and most of the time, the suspect AI will simply fight back or tend to be very stubborn in complying when they are certain they have you outnumbered and outgun at any given situation, like when utilizing smaller arms against their heavy weapons. They also tend to run rather than surrender or fight when they see that they are outnumbered and outgunned.
The AI in SWAT 4 is just buggy however this is due to some lack of polish more than anything. Modders have been tweaking and significantly improve some of the AI aspect. Just look up "SWAT 4: Elite Force" (SEF) mod, it brings a lot of amazing gameplay tweaks and other subtle improvements to the table while keeping the core game intact.
I can agree with you that the AI may be mind blowing in some aspects. Definitely when we look at the Suspects / Civilians and the interaction or influence between characters. But I'm mainly talking about the officer AI.
The room clearing is sometimes atrocious, they don't check the correct angles, they don't check every little bit of the room leaving blind spots uncleared while they say *room clear* . But all of this depends on the map as well, I've seen map makers actually doing a very good job at this and making them actually follow more realistic paths and facing the correct directions.
Not to mention the way they stack up, they basically all expose themselves as soon as they open the door. They don't like to hug the walls but rather stand in the open resulting in getting injured while trying to throw a grenade inside. And whenever they see a suspect they all go crazy and aim at that one certain individual and don't bother about clearing the rest of the room. They sometimes even chase them down, which in some cases results in running into an ambush.
I'm already aware of the mod, although it's a very good mod, my statement still holds. Nothing beats playing this on multiplayer when you know every officer has a mind of their own and are a reliable source for your team.
However, all these flaws will never be enough for me to dislike this game in the slightest bit. To this day I'm still amazed and motivated to play this game. I still play this game very regularly alongside a few veterans who you can find on the following website: ets-clan.co.uk/

Fun Fact: Originally SWAT 4 would use a real life name for the guns but it was cancelled due to some gun manufacturer would actually sue the game company. The saddest part is almost all gun are just given a generic name like 9mm smg for the mp5.
SWAT reminds me of SOCOM because of the level quality and attention to detail in it's recreation and realistic depiction of both respective settings. It's funny also how both games started out as amazing games with fantastic single player campaigns, but now exist as multiplayer only games that barely resemble what they originally were designed to be. Rainbow Six and Ghost Recon being the more popular and thus successful version of each title, not saying they aren't equally as good or influential games (especially in the beginning). Just trying to point out how it's very difficult with the big name franchises like Tom Clancy, just as it's hard for games these same titles to compete with Battlefield and Battlegrounds/etc...

He's remembering partially right. They had a zombie game planned using the same engine as SWAT 4, but it was cancelled.
This game was lit af. I played it when i was young and VIP Escord, CooP and standart PVP w/o respawns was the best multiplayer experience ive ever had with other games like medal of honor aa, wolfenstein and cod 1 - - - In the hospital mission the swat AI is kinda limmited and dies quickly. It seems like they have problems looking through the door windows.

The SSF being caught as a virus is a false positive. been playing it for a while now and haven't had anything odd happen to my computer for 2 years of having it.
It is pretty good in terms of adding a couple new weapons, improving suspect AI and a few other rebalances.

Is there a way to play this game in co-op with a friend?
You can search for online servers in swat4stats.com, click on an empty server, manually copy the IP address of the server from the search bar, which are the numbers found after the word 'servers/', and then use the Direct IP function in the co-op menu and paste the IP address you copied earlier into there, before you enter it. You can also create your own server using the 'Host Game' function.
SEF mod sir, There are iron sights where you can aim down the gun. Now that is a real shooter and how the original devs should have done in the first place.

Aaannnddd screw that mod. There’s all these dumb mods that add tons of military grade weapons and basically encourages you to go in blasting everything in sight like a psycho. They completely destroy what makes the game great and miss the point entirely.
SWAT 4's penalty system is sorta wonky with deadly force. For example, you can't shoot suspects who are reaching into their pockets for weapons. Luckily, there are mods to modify the penalty without removing it entirely.

I hate the penalty system in Swat 4 and I actually like that it's been removed in the mod, but I have to agree with a sentiment. I've had players in coop games go blasting indiscriminately, rocking up penalty points like crazy. One of them literally invited me to one of his servers, advertising it as "only kill." I want to not get penalized for killing suspects when the situation should have permitted, but I also don't want to start an unadultered massacre.
If people wanted to kill, then why not play Rainbow Six: RS

hey, I know this video's really old but I was wondering how you got the old SWAT 3 to work on your pc, I just bought the physical of the elite edition and having trouble running it, I already installed the last resort mod but I can't start a career, just play random missions, and also when I start one, the game crashes (I already downloaded the updated cutscenes too btw). If anyone could help me i would really appreciate it, cheers!
I used the gog version, but I used last resort along with dgvoodoo.
Also I would run the game on windowed mode through the console script, although i would have to change the comparability mode to run in 16 bit

The SAS Mod has some errors or viruses. The .exe file for the SAS mod says it has a virus and someone says its a Trojan Horse Virus.

why can't i find an example video of the functionality of the mirror/wand to see around 90 degree corners, ?, i know it was a feature as i remember using it, can't rememeber for sure if it worked in online play, but i certainly was there for offline play, yet i can't find a single video, to contrast with Ready or not, which to my mind doesn't have this capability though you can use the mirror in other ways....the strategic element of the originial rainbow 6 games are imho still among the best FPS ever developed. ...cheers btw i'm sure evrybody reading likely already knows this but i really dig the fact that on the hardest difficulty the MO is tii resolve the situation without any fatalities, hostages and suspects,, it's a really challeging style of gameplay, something other FPS should take note of
