  • The game industry seems to have forgotten about tactical shooters, but Ready or Not aims to revive the genre in the modern age. Even in it's early access state, the level of care and detail present rises above plenty of bigger AAA projects. If you're a fan of the SWAT games, namely SWAT 4, and you've been feeling neglected the last couple decades, this is exactly what you've been looking for.

The AAA gaming industry won't even give us a game like Urban Chaos Riot Response today.

Biggest "pet peeve" (and it could have changed) but the fact that you never get dialog from your squad mates like you do from Swat 4.
Maybe it will be a late game patch but going into single player and seeing things like the militia, the meth heads or the sweet 16 gone wrong are all moments I think that would add to a squad mate commenting "WTF!? This is some fucked up shit man" or little things like "thanks for the assist" "suspect is armed/ suspect has a knife!" would really add to the game.

Swat 4 has literally shaped my life. I found it on a demo disk from a PC gaming magazine that my brother bought when I was 11. Ever since then I was hooked, even though it was only the one auto garage level. A while later I joined a clan. After a couple years, looking for more, one of our partner clans pointed me at "Arma". And from there it went, played Arma in a clan for a bit, then founded my own with a friend from school. Learned programming to make tools to help with our Arma playing. Today, I'm still in that same clan after over 10 years and my day job is programming... On Arma.
I hope that Ready or Not will shape the next Generation, just like Swat shaped me all those years ago.
Ready or Not is great, but.. it still has some way to go. I do play it with the friend from way back then but.. Still today, I play Swat 4 more often. I don't know what it is, but it hasn't hooked me yet. But I know that the right people are on the Job, and I trust their vision.

    I love this game!
Bought it the first day it launched onto Early Access, having followed it since the teaser trailer came out back in 2017.
As someone who knows nothing about game development, I've been fascinated watching test maps of white walls and orange objects be transformed into these gorgeous maps with more detail than I can possible find on my own. I also just love the fact that it's a tactical shooter that can feasibly be played alone (friend? What are those?).
And the music, my god the music! The Adam Update changed the main menu theme to what is without a doubt one of the best pieces of music I've ever heard! "Hauntingly Beautiful" are the only words that can describe it.
I personally find the whole game to be a love letter to the tactical police community, not glorifying them in any sort of "copaganda" but doing so in a very respectful adult way, showing how important, how dangerous, and how disturbing their work can be.
My most memorable moment from Ready Or Not was my first run-through of Brisa Cove. I knew from the briefing blurb that it a veteran group had caused an incident requiring our intervention and I knew the map from when it was a test map but when I got into the map and was being forced to kill or be killed by one-legged combat veterans, it broke my heart a little. These poor vets were just trying to get their VA benefits they were owed for their service and when backed into a corner they resorted to what they know how to do best: fight. As a vet myself I not only was sympathetic to their cause but I felt terrible for shooting people I couldn't help but see as brothers in arms. I've also never been able to successfully complete the objective of "arrest 3 suspects" on that map, and knowing how important death before surrender is to those men I know it's not for a lack of trying on my part. I can't reiterate enough: a videogame got me to feel bad for "killing" lines of code! Even games like Spec Ops: The Line never got me to feel bad because I knew it was a game, and I knew that's what they were trying to make me feel, but Ready or Not broke through that part of my brain!
God only knows what it'll be like when the devs get around to lifting their big heavy brass balls enough to release the "building where children are educated" map. I'm both nervous and excited (excited doesn't feel like the right word) for that update which I'm sure will cause a shitstorm.

Church bro. It's absolutely criminal of how little the soundtrack is talked about tho. Zack Bower is something else, the combat OST with the Amen Break sample never get old- hell even the earlier soundtracks by Dan Liston are also masterpieces, perhaps not in the combat apartment, but in tone and atmosphere. It's just so iconic.

Same goes for your extremists in the night club. Night Club is especially hard because of those angles and lighting. But i kinda like the challenge in it, you cant just go into certain areas before having half of the team secure certain areas. Which is exactly how it would go IRL. Only thing i would have love to have in game, is the sniper team to provide lookout and cover. To further adding realism

As someone who grew up in Detroit and went to a lot of raves in teens and twenties, I found myself in about a dozen house and building raids. Civilians without warrants will always do whatever the swat team says in my experience - even if they're the type to give cops shit during a routine stop or arrest. The suspects that SWAT is there for, will usually hide their guns because they're not for the law 90% of the time, but for "protection" and "business security". If you're getting raided, odds are you're going down for something, so your'e best bet is to minimize the damage and evidence against yo in the time you have. Hell, even a guy that was russian mob who ran an after hours rave and mdma hookup didn't open fire on the police when it was raided (I heard he jumped from the back window, but don't know what happened to him, he was upstairs and I was downstairs with the other 50-80 people, but the only gunshots were swat firing on my friend Mac in the leg and ass with rubber bullets for running from swat as they aproached the building while he had stepped outside lol. He was black and purple for a month lmfao).
I remember a civilian in SWAT 4, I think the Food Wall level, he started to comply with me, then as I started to approach for the cuff he got up. "No, not this time.. I'm not going back". Maybe he was a suspect that simply didn't have a gun equiped to begin with, I dont know, but i seemed novel and realistic. It takes a lot for people to go up against body armor, helmets, shields, grenades, smg/assault rifles, etc - while they're comparatively butt naked with a 9mm pistol :p

Maybe for the surrendering they could make it where each type of enemy has a different default rate that slowly rises as the team starts to pick them off or arrest them one by one.
They’re really cocky in the beginning with the numbers on their side, but they slowly realize they’re still getting beaten and start to give up or hide.

One thing I wish they could change is to randomize more what civilians look like. Some maps are themed where it makes sense for suspects and civilians to be obvious, but when I played the hospital map, the terrorists can sometimes be disguised as doctors, and that makes it where you have to properly challenge and identify everyone, as you never know who is a threat. The other request I would have is being able to order someone to walk towards you so you don’t have to arrest them in a dangerous location.

I've been a fan of old school tactical shooters; played a bunch of R6 Raven Shield and SWAT 4 back then.
These are the type of games that big companies just don't make anymore nowadays.
When RoN was first announced, my initial reaction was, this is too good to be true. Especially at the time, the planned release schedule looked super unrealistic. Then followed by a long wait, when we finally see the launch of early access, the wait was well worth it.

I loved Police Quest so much. There probably aren’t many people left who have even played it, much less people who have fond memories of it but it does some really interesting things that haven’t been repeated since. You mentioned the SWAT series and this game being police sims, but they’re far from it - they’re action games. Police Quest is a police sim. You do routine patrol work, you investigate crimes, you go to a morning briefing, you have to type out each specific step in order to shoot a gun, pass a test to even use a gun, inspect your squad car before taking it out, and so many more things that I’ve forgotten in the 10+ years it’s been since I last played it. All of the police work is handled in a point-and-click adventure game-y way, but it still feels more immersive than most other games that have called themselves simulations over the years. It’s super tedious to play and intentionally vague to incentivize calling the Sierra help line, but it’s still 100% worth experiencing at least once even if it’s watching a Let’s Play or something.

The game is great and worth buying. Only issue as you mentioned is the enemy AI that is WAY too trigger happy that forces you to almost always 'shoot on sight' since you know they won't surrender. A shame because this does away with so much of the whole 'tactical' part of the game. Hope they fix this sooner rather than later.

I love this game so much, even tho it is not always polished. It goes hard. It’s always fun and rarely predictable. I do think AI needs to be a little more likely to comply for both suspects and civilians. They almost always resist. They have improved some issues that arose with unauthorized force a while back.

This has easily become my favorite game, sheerly from the horror and tactical gameplay. Its a special kind of thing when you can make a game that is highly realistic, not just in gameplay, and it still be arguably one of the best games out right now.

Having played SWAT 4 and Ready or Not extensively, I believe SWAT 4 is still the best tactical shooter out there. Ready or Not is awesome in it’s own right, but definitely less polished and fleshed out. It attempts to follow what made SWAT 4 great, but falls short. SWAT 4 is full of life, details, AI is the right amount of difficulty, and the maps are the right sizes. Not too mention the AI lines and reactions. It’s more complete in many aspects. Ready or Not does have awesome gunplay though.

To be an efficient Officer you needed to type fast and correct haha. RoN is great fun though, not quite SWAT 4 level of greatness yet, but I look forward to each new update it brings with hope it can reach an equal level or even surpass it.

If you haven't played Zero Hour it's pretty fun too, but the enemies are easier and the gear is simpler. I would recommend it if you feel like playing something like RoN but less frustrating. And it has PvP, which is real fun with friends.
OH, AND ANOTHER THING. If you haven't played milsims, it's a real awesome experience. Squad, Hell Let Loose and Post Scriptum are kind of a realistic Battlefield, with a lot of teamwork required (my favorite being Squad). And Arma 3 (even the first Operation Flashpoint) is the supreme war simulator, with all the content and possibilities you could imagine. In some ways, this games are like Ready or Not, but at a full other scale.

As of writing this, the devs have confirmed major updates in the works for their story mode including mental health of the officers being effected by how you play, permadeath in story mode (for you or npc officers), highlighting dropped evidence like guns and such, and greatly improving SWAT AI. So it’s only going to get better.
I remember once during the Mindjot mission, I was in a tight hallway with a semi-auto shotgun with slugs. I play solo so I only ever have AI with me so im the “pointman”. A mindjot security guy pops out from behind an unloaded server box and I shoot him point blank in the center of his throat with a 12ga slug. Dude drops his gun, his mouth falls open, he slightly leans forward, before toppling backwards all while his neck is just POURING blood down his neck in a way that didnt seem scripted, much more fluid looking. Im not squeamish but I had to pause and take a second because the brutality took me off guard. Especially since the gunplay is very disorienting to seeing a shot like that pointblank was very special and hasnt really happened in my dozens of hours in RoN

12:15 the first time i saw an NPC putting himself to the forever sleep, i was in Brixley Talent Time with a friend chasing a bad guy. He steps outside and when we catch him and tell him to drop his weapon, he puts the weapon on his chin and shot. I stoped everything. I literally wasn't able to react. I've never seen something like this in ANY videogame. Even for someone that makes giant piles of civilians body in ArmA even in RoN, i would go spraying everything that moves in some missions just for fun. Seing that shook my core.

The only thing deterring me from buying RoN is the AI, it feels like most of the time the lethal gunfights are inevitable. It's not something I would find enjoyable in a tactical shooter. But, we shall see when it comes out of Early access. :)
Although I must say that some of the problems mentioned about SWAT 4 in this video are fixed with mods, such as: Elite Force and its "sub-mod", First Responders. They are essentially the same but both work differently in their core (for example, the latter disables optiwand) They have quite a few additions (weapons and shields) and QoL changes which the base game doesn't have, like the penalties you've been issued because of the unauthorized force you used, so there's no need to wait until the end to see.
If any of you revisit Swat 4 again, give either these 2 mods a try. :)

That statement is so true when coming to such messed up thing. "The shock value wears off but the intensity never does" from personal experience i can agree after awhile the shock of messed up things does wear off you go unfazed and think the extremely unnormal is normal it can and does mess up the way one things and acts towards people no matter how uncomfortable i would recommend listening to the lore of this games from recordings in the precinct to those on the maps and all the other hidden things cuss the reality of this game though sad to say is not far off from being the reality we live in.

I'm so glad I'm not the only one having problems with mods just not showing up, I just thought I was doing something wrong for the longest time. My only real complaint for the game is that the devs leave us in the dark for months and months at a time. That and we only get like one major update a year and it's more just fine tuning rather than adding new features. This game could really use a proper story campaign to take advantage of a lot of things about the environment you talked about.

Game still needs a lot more work imo.
    1) AI needs improvement - Their reaction time is way too good sometimes. Given the graphic design is intentionally murky and blurry, you can barely see the targets but the AI has pinpoint accuracy sometimes with perfect reaction.
    2) More polish required on animations. It can be very hard to see the AI's intended movements (graphic design dont help too). It also doesnt help that the Ai doesnt seem to respond to getting shot by bullets, so there is little feedback for the player to understand if the shot hit or not.
    3) Sound design - Yes the guns sound great. But how about door sounds and importantly footsteps? I can barely hear the targets patrolling around and there is no atmosphere to the locations. Hostages / civilians dont make any sounds, enemies creep around with any sound. Doors open without any sound. It kinda feels like the game is muted.
    4) Darkness and Brightness - The game is too dark. Not in terms of the subject matter, but just too dark in brightness. I cant see shit. Maybe you might say that is realistic of whatever, but it does not affect the AI in identifying you though (as said AI tend to have perfect aim and target acquisition). The flashlight is absolutely horrible imo, can only light up a 5cmx5cm circle of light in front of you. So many attachments to guns but give me the attachment called "a better lumen flashlight" please.
    5) Coop AI - SWAT 4 coop AI has taken the brunt of memes for being quite stupid. But Ready or Not takes the cake, they are brain dead stupid.
    6) Unnecessary scripted movements - This refers to the things like securing evidences and zip tying targets. It should not be tagged to an animation where you cant move out off after activating the action. Too tedious.
Game needs a lot more work.

I feel like the AI not surrendering until being hurt makes sense, regardless of scenario. Dumb crooks think they're invincible, so they'll try to take you on despite being outclassed. But if they get wounded or stunned, they're probably thinking "Ow, fuck! That hurts! Screw this, I'm giving up!"
