Samhain Traditions

  • Carving turnips for Samhain or Halloween is a tradition that I love to carry out each year. There are other customs and traditions that I embrace at Samhain that I talk about here. Samhain is the Celtic New Year, a time of feasting and celebration, as well as an opportunity to think of our ancestors and take the time to visit with them.

Here is the recipe for the pie!
6oz of shortcrust pastry - 6oz wholemeal spelt flour, 3oz butter, salt and water
1 onion, 1 leek, parboiled potatoes, couple of carrots, turnip from the lanterns, a couple tablespoons of stock, cheddar cheese.
    **************
Saute the onions and leek for a few minutes and then throw in the chopped carrots, the drained parboiled potatoes and a couple of carrots. Add the stock and simmer and stir for about 5 minutes. Allow to cool and roll out the pastry covering a greased plate or pie dish with half of the pastry. Add the vegetables and spread over the pie base. Grate a strong cheese over the vegetables and then cover with the rest of the pastry . Brush with egg wash and bake until pastry is brown and crisp. Enjoy with Colcannon, (another Samhain dish made from mashed potatoes and mashed kale).
Enjoy the festival, Samhain Blessings for a very happy New Year!

I could listen to this folk wisdom all day. I didn't know about seed-fall or the story behind Jack 'O' Lantern. It was just like being in your kitchen with you. It's a perfect wild and windy Samhain here with swirling leaves and thrashing rain. The clocks have gone back and I'm off to carve my Jack 'O Lantern. Have a wonderful Samhain - you have enhanced mine.

During the development of American culture, we mish mashed Catholic, Celtic, and Roman traditions to create something wholly unique to us, and called it Halloween. It is so tragic that we have destroyed what was beautiful and sacred about all of our holidays with consumer trash. As pumpkins are endemic to the Americas, it makes sense that early traditions were developed from them. I would grow those turnips if I knew the name of them. And I've seen how they shrivel up and look quite grotesque, adding to the thematic impact of the season. Folks do it here with apples. I appreciate your contribution to the tales, for even though I know them, it is so vital that we share them on and on, so they filter through time. People need to remember why we celebrate these times of year, the cycles, the seasons, and honoring the dead. We have no relationship with our ancestors, certainly not at Halloween, and it is detrimental to us all. We must all do what we can to keep our traditions alive, for how else will history recall if not through the passing of tales and the old wisdom?

I absolutely agree, we must keep on telling stories and passing on wisdom of old - that is what helps us to keep connected to our human soul xx

Lovely as usual! Very interesting how close this is to the Mexican Day of the Dead--honoring ancestors, the concept that the barrier between this world and the next is "thinner," even setting out food and gifts for the ancestors.

My grandmother always talked about carving turnips instead of pumpkins. And about making and giving away soul cakes. Much of this was like being with her again. I never heard the jacks and the devil story though, or just don’t remember it if I did.

These turnips are wonderful! I live far up north in Scandinavia and we do not have Samhain here so it is very interesting to learn about it. Here we stand on the threshold to the long dark polar night, all we can do is embrace the darkness...

@@DanusIrishHerbGarden No need to apologize! My memory is rather selective too these days. We do not celebrate such a festival. Perhaps they did once...we know so very little these days. But he did get fire from the gods in some old myths. He is a trickster and trouble maker. Disturbing the balance among the old Norse gods. I live very far up north where several cultures meet, as Finnish speaking groups, the kvens and the Sami. This is not the land of Loki and the aesir but of the old Sami gods and goddesses. I have very little knowledge about your gods in my turn. Therefore I find it so inspiring to hear about your culture and folklore. Wish you all the best!

@@DanusIrishHerbGarden Not to my knowledge. Today not much is known about their old religion as they where forced to become Christians during the 17th-18th centuries (Not all forced of course some wanted to as they found their way in Christianity ). The Sami did not write themselves and all that is written is by outsiders (many of them missionaries...)The old religion has a lot in common with other indigenous people living as hunter, gatherers and reindeer herders especially far up north. They had several gods/goddesses and shamans. The earth, rivers, lakes and so on was considered holy. The authorities decided the old religion to be devil worship and destroyed all traditions they possibly could (and worse). But somehow I can feel it in my blood...some old memories of how my ancestors once lived and worshipped...Wish you a happy day!

That was great. I really enjoyed listening to your stories and folklore tales. I learned a few things about Elderberry, so thank you. Winter will arrive here in a couple of weeks from now so we've all been busy finishing the harvest and preparing for colder days and nights. It seems that summer flew by and autumn has run a close second. With recent rain and wind many trees have lost their golden yellow, brilliant orange and vibrant red leaves now. This morning I watched a whitetail doe just after first light. It frosty this morning. That graceful doe got up out of her bed in the meadow south of my cabin window. A moment later a buck stood up too. As things brightened doe slowly followed buck through a carpet of frosted weeds and ferns. Soon whitetail deer will be breeding here, elk and mule deer are likely finishing their rut now. - - - All those sunflowers out in my garden standing so tall and stately fed at least some small birds on their migration south this year. Snow has covered the mountain peaks in the past week, so winter has arrived in the high country. Thanks for sharing so much with us here. Happy Halloween and have a good winter. Cheers!

Terri, hello from Whidbey Island in Washington State. I am loving every one of your charming and informative videos. Thank you for all of your good work and wisdom. I was wondering if you could share your turnip pie recipe. It sounds delicious and a wonderful way to celebrate. We are actually having one of those crisp, sunny Autumn days for Samhain this year. I am going to try to carve a turnip, as well as one of our pumpkins and make some of the Mullein candles you taught us to make. We'll light our candles, sit cozy around the fire and reflect on the many blessings of the year!
