It's important to have seasonal foods and special dishes. I think in these days when everything is always available year round it turns what was once special and joyful into something ordinary and mundane. Eating seasonally with what is naturally locally available and making season specific dishes I think is much better for the spirit and overall life balance (of course admit it's easier to say when you live in a milder climate and not cold places akin to Siberia!)
It is important and you couldn't have put it better. The homogenisation of food and customs is making the world a very dull place. Seasonal food is so much more tasty as well and when linked to a cultural festival even better xx
I prefer the older traditions and honoring ancestors and appreciation for the turning wheel of the year. I really dislike the Halloween as presented in America. It is a very negative connotation we are teaching children. I suspect this will be the LAST Halloween in America, when the sleepy finally wake up. Thank you for keeping the ancient traditions alive Terri and Lol! Happy Samhain 🎃.
Thank you! As always, wonderful bits of videography. Amazes me how Lol can find something new in the ever-changing lights, seasons, plants, and pets. Love it!
I don't know how I missed this last year but I was thrilled to see it pop up. I still have time to make this for Samhain and I'm surprised it wasn't more complicated. I'm a huge fan of traditions, remembering our family ties and carrying on their ways whenever possible. You inspire me so often. Love and many Blessings to you and your family. ( the dogs were putting on a show today 🐾🐾) 💜
Thank you for making this today. I've been craving barmbreac for the last two weeks. In moving I misplaced my recipe. I will be baking tonite . I can't wait for it to cure, lol, must have an end piece 10 minutes after coming out of the oven. I feel like writing the recipe on the wall do I don't misplace it again. Happy Samhain and blessings to all ❤
Dear Terry, thank you sooo much for your precious and wonderful knowledge! I'll try to prepare this lovely traditional cake with my mom as soon as possible! You know, some weeks ago I helped a friend of mine affected by Covid giving her as a gift the last thyme oxymel bottle I did last year... She loved it and felt a lot all its natural benefits; fortunately now she and her husband are completely recovered!!! Again, thank you so much from the deepest of my heart for sharing your ancient Irish wisdom ☘️💚🌳 All the best for you, your family and beloved ones in this special night ☀️💛⭐ Take care!
Delighted to hear that you made the Thyme Oxymel and that your friends benefitted from it too. Sharing medicine is a great way to help one another. Many blessings to you Francesca xxx
I loved how you stated to thank our ancesters and think about how they have contributed to where we are now. That is a much better way to think about it
Your cake looks wonderful. I would love to taste a piece. I bake my own bread but only an occasional Wacky (cocoa and baking powder) cake. Lately I've just finished cutting and hauling, out of the forest, four cords of firewood, replenishing my stack of wood for the winter. I burn wood to heat this small cabin so that hard work is necessary every year. Lately I started digging all my dozens of dahlias out in the garden for winter storage. Another big job for a man my age. I'm 68 right now. In recent weeks the dahlias have been blooming beautifully and it is always a shame to see them finished. Tonight is Halloween, a quiet time in this village for quite a few years as so much has changed over time. When I was younger I would dress up as the headless horseman, riding my horse through the village. Usually people that would see me would recognize my horse so they would know it was me, so not too frightening. Yesterday a herd of 18 wild turkeys came to visit my yard and today five of my deer friends came to see me while I was working in the garden. It's always a joy to have the wild things come to visit. It seems, with these short days and bright autumn colour, winter can't be too far off now. Seeing you make your cake makes me think I should make something special for this special season. Seeing your dogs play with each other the way they do puts a smile on my face. Thanks for sharing again. Take care and enjoy the remainder of the season. Cheers!
You are only 68!! No age at all! I agree things have changed a lot, so much has been commercialised which is distasteful to me. How lovely to have so many visitors. Our weather is very mild and quite humid until this afternoon when we had a little bit of hail and the dampness makes it feel colder. It is lovely watching animals play and they do bring a lot of joy. xx
I just moved to Ireland a bit over a month ago and saw these cakes just yesterday. There is so many things I don't know yet, so this has been very very interesting.
Thank you for this recipe…yummm…I love the tradition of baking special things for the special occasions throughout the year…and by the way, your dogs are so wonderful ❣️Carol xx
Blessed Samhain! This is lovely and inspirational. I may give it a go this evening, as it's rainy and damp in Kentucky and baked goods are happiness. :)
Lovely traditional ideas that I will revisit and pass to my children this year. Fourth generation Irish and my ancestors deserve recognition with a delicious cake. Thank you Teri ❤
How lovely! I love this time of year and I’m looking forward to remembering those who have passed, in particular my beloved Grandma Charlotte, as well as doing some tarot readings!! As an aside, maybe the trinkets could go into a bag and be pulled out by each person, without looking, instead of actually in the cake! Just an idea 😊 Happy Samhain dear ones!! 👻🎃❤️🙏🇮🇪☘️
I loved this video Terri , thank you🙏 I lost my dad this year, he was 90! and barmbreac was his favourite, he used to tell us of our grandmother making this in his home town of Cork many years ago. Mine has just gone into the oven, and I will be having a slice and raising a glass to my ancestors. Samhain blessings Terri to you and your family 🧡🎃
Thank you Terry and Lol Jazz and Brock I can just smell the delicious Samhain loaf baking Yum warm with butter! The Samhain Hallowtide tradtion is a lovely one so unfortunate the commercial Halloween prevails today. I ve learned so much from your videos, thank you for enriching our lives. I find Danu"s Irish Herb Garden ,Bealtaine Cottage and just recently The Old Shop are so wonderful Blessings from Winnipeg Manitoba Canada xo
I've actually made my barmbrack just like yours, this year! I don't usually put apple in, but like you, I thought it would be appropriate this time around. Happy Samhain from America!🍂🎃🍂
wonderful tradition, dear Terri...................tomorrow i will hold an incense ritual here on my small terrace to myself..................Blessings and greetings from daggy,Kiel,Germany☘☘☘
Thank you for the recipe Danu💌 I'm from the east part of the Netherlands and about your age😉. I love baking and cooking from different countries. Have a good samhain. Love and Light to you. 🖖💞🍀
Ginger ale is a good substitute,if you could get cane sugar would be better. I did that at New year cake but I washed a Quarter and I put it in foil just for safety reasons and my greedy big sister tore up the cake just to find the coin I was fuming mad and I never did that again, because she seen me do that and asked me why and I explained it, but she had a very bad year that year, served her right. She was a widow and was getting a few checks from her late husband so there was no need for her to do that. I didn't have nothing at the time, and for the record I still don't in ways with my situation, but it is a whole lot better in many ways.
It's as simple as the typical Italian cake that they make, up of mountains where chestnuts trees are, they would use chestnut flour. I like the add of whisky, it must make everything very aromatic. Enjoy the cake and let us know what is in store for you within the year 🧙🔮. Much love!
I would love to try chestnut flour. Our foraging expert, Craig from last week, uses Sweet Chestnut flour and Acorn flour and they are delicious. Blessings Laura xx
I made this once it was as you say easy to make the smell permeated the house and gosh it was good to eat. I can smell yours as I watch. Must make it again. Thank you for the history.
My friend and I went off to the Kitchen, leaving new boyfriend and her Partner in the sitting room.we had been told to look in a mirror and we would see our future husbands, she only saw herself. I was looking when my boyfriend came behind me, so I saw him. we have been married 40 years last August.
Wow! how interesting. Just goes to show that we don't have to expect things to be all spooky, you literally saw the man of your future! What a great story to tell at this time of year. xx
Samhain blessings to you, Terri and thank you for inviting us into your kitchen to watch you bake. Your Barmbreac no doubt tastes as delicious as it looks! Fond memories of my own going back many years, of an anthracite Aga range, which most of the time was fine but on those special occasions when most needed, wouldn't perform as expected!🤣
Tell me about it!😂 One Christmas we were waiting for hours even though the wind direction was perfect -definitely contrary things. Blessings Janine! xx
Terri, Just added myself as a subscriber (finally). Greetings from Canada. I watch your videos every week. I plan to make this Brambreac loaf. Definitely a hearty treat, which will further connect me to my Irish heritage. May I make a suggestion? I've been baking since I was a child, and am used to 'greasing' the loaf pan, then lining it with wax paper, prior to adding the mixture. I found by clipping wooden clothes pins at the sides of the pan, (to hold the wax paper in place), would keep my mixture from spilling over the sides of the paper. Of course, remove the pins prior to putting in the oven. This is something I still do. 🫖 This will be a loaf to share over 'tea time'. K.
Samhain blessings .Your recipe is the Irish version of the Welsh Bara Brith .I usually make one for a friend at Yule ........but this year as a surprise I'll add some whiskey🙃
Wish I could find turnips to carve them this year. I can't find them anywhere. My two local grocery stores didn't have any, and neither did our local farmers market.
Happy belated Samhain dear Terri and Thank you so much for this Wonderful Barmbrack recipe ! 😇🙏💖💫 I did have an Amazing Samhain indeed as I was visiting Ireland for the first time (In this lifetime 🥰) and met Con and Niamh Connor and we talked about you and your Wonderful Wisdom and Teachings ! XOXO
I'm tempted to have a go at making this tomorrow. I'm not Irish, but I feel my soul is Irish. Also, "Whiskey (optional)" - since when has Whiskey been optional? 😉 Thank you once again for another great video. ❤
Looks Delicious! I'm going to give a try! I have homemade beach plum jam that will go great with the barmbreac bread. Thank you for the recipe Terri have a beautiful day!
Terri, a little off-topic, but we just received your Weed Handbooks, and they are lovely! Thank you so much! We appreciate all that you do for us and our Mother Earth.
I am watching this in August, but your last words reminded me of something I had started to do years back and then I had stopped because of moving and work and busyness of life. This year, I will do a little bonfire and sit beside it and do prayer bundles of gratitude and put them in the fire. Samhain is a good time for reflection. it falls in nicely with the fall feasts in the Jewish calendar. lol. In the Jewish calendar, my ex is Jewish, September is the new year so the shofar is blown, then there is yom kippur which is time for atonement and repentance, then the feast of tabernacles where families camp for about a week outside in remembrance of the flight out of Egypt. Then bring in Samhain to remember and be grateful to those who have gone before you and to reflect on what you want to bring in and let go. love your channel.
I think every culture has their own version of the wheel of the year. All human beings need ritual to help stay connected to their ancestors, to the land, to the seasons...
the cake looks absolutely delicious, I'm salivating. Tea cakes are some of my favourite treats. thank you for a great upload! do you think the butter could be replaced with pure lard?
Hello Terri, I’m wondering is there a part 2 as in late spring I believe you were making a new greenhouse out of an old small building on your property to be cleaned out to replace your poly tunnel. How is that going?
When I was a child my mother would wrap coins in wax paper and insert then into our birthday cakes before frosting them. I never remembered to do this for my son's birthdays. I think the coins were for luck. There may have been other trinkets in the cake as well, I don't recall.
in New Orleans and the surrounding area they make King Cakes during the Mardi Gra season. Inside the cake is a little plastic baby. The person who gets the baby is said to have good fortune for the year or get pregnant, and if pregnant will deliver a healthy baby. When I lived down there you had to put your order in for a cake at the local baker weeks in advance, if you want a fancy decorated one.
Do you know the temperature of your oven? I use a toaster oven which runs hotter than a regular oven, even if it's set at the same temperature. My regular oven doesn't work. :( I would love to make this.
I once worked at a bakery/restaurant run by an older Frenchwoman. She kept the oven at 375 F all day, and we cooked everything at that temperature, no matter what the recipe said. It's a temperature that works for everything, if you're ever unsure. Overnight, she would crack the door just slightly and use the residual heat to dehydrate anything we might want dehydrated. Worked out perfectly.
I rewatched this because I loved making barmbreac as a kid, so I love this video. If you see this comment, could you explain a little about why the church was against meat? Thanks!!
Meat was forbidden during Lent and on Fridays. During Lent because it was a period of fasting leading to Easter. On Fridays because Christ was crucified on Friday and so we should give up something - maybe to be in solidarity??

One of my favourites too. Yes - you could use pure lard. Let us know how you get on xx
Another lovely video! I'll give the Barmbreac a go! The new website is fantastic by the way! Kxx
Thanks very much Kate, glad you think so.😀
Wonderful, but I was worried while you were grating the apple.
Ha ha - yes it is easily done!😳
I need to try this! What kind of tea are you using? Black tea or herbs of choice?
Just ordinary black tea.
🍁 Thank-you! 🍂 🍁🍂
You are welcome xx
And so is Beltane.
Thank you for this lovely video, what is the name of the music in the beginning it is just beautiful..
It is Lol's composition. Glad you like it xx
Love Jameson’s 🥃must try this cake recipe but without trinkets 😅
Hello Terri, just wanted to let you know that I made this some time ago. It was delicious! Greetings from Holland
Glad you enjoyed it xx
Hello Terri, I’m wondering is there a part 2 as in late spring I believe you were making a new greenhouse out of an old small building on your property to be cleaned out to replace your poly tunnel. How is that going?
Thanks for asking. The extension to the greenhouse is finished and I just have to repaint it. Will show you that in a week or two. xx
Beautiful! Thank you!
Glad you like it! xx
When I was a child my mother would wrap coins in wax paper and insert then into our birthday cakes before frosting them. I never remembered to do this for my son's birthdays. I think the coins were for luck. There may have been other trinkets in the cake as well, I don't recall.
Great idea - much safer xx
Do you deliver?
I post things.
in New Orleans and the surrounding area they make King Cakes during the Mardi Gra season. Inside the cake is a little plastic baby. The person who gets the baby is said to have good fortune for the year or get pregnant, and if pregnant will deliver a healthy baby. When I lived down there you had to put your order in for a cake at the local baker weeks in advance, if you want a fancy decorated one.
Interesting xx
Do you know the temperature of your oven? I use a toaster oven which runs hotter than a regular oven, even if it's set at the same temperature. My regular oven doesn't work. :(
I would love to make this.
To be honest, with my oven I just stick things and hope for the best. For this load it was around 350 degrees/180
❤🧡💚💜
Samhain Blessings Hella xx
