Youi'd be hard put to remember the song from the film. It was sung first by a small boy on the gallows, very simply, then the queue of thieves and beggars waiting to be hanged join in, but it's still fairly simple and straightforward. What Geoff did with this arrangement was phenomenal.
Later verse was sung by Elizabeth Swan as she rowed the small boat in Singapore. The Chinese sailor ended the line with "never say we die" as Elizabeth got out of the boat and remarked that it was a dangerous song to be singing.
After hearing this version of the song, I looked up the scene on YT, and found it heartbreaking -- the number of people being hanged, apparently (from the announcement of the soldier) for having anything at all to do with pirates. And yes, the song was started by a boy who looked to be about 8-10 years old -- the idea of them executing a child that way is horrifying, especially because he wouldn't be heavy enough to die immediately when the floor dropped; he would kick for a while until he finally suffocated -- horrible way to die. (If you were heavy enough, your neck broke when you dropped, and you died instantly.)
You have Cesar & Jose confused. Jose was in the middle, Cesar in the white shirt (he's the newest VP member). IMO this deserves an award - absolutely mind blowing all around: singing, bass, beatboxing, video production - all out of this world.
Jose was in My Mother Told Me. Geoff did the arrangement and video. He and Eli did the lighting. Have outdone themselves once again. Vikings and pirates galore.
When Geoff does the arranging, as he did here, he often uses Eli's 'metal scream' voice and reduces himself to a smaller part. I was impressed with Geoff's careful enunciation of 'watery'. Most singers would slur the 't' to a 'd' sound which is easier to sing. Makeup award to Cesar! He pulled back his Afro and then used the milky blue eye and hit a metal manacle on his leg that added a kind of 'bell' sound. Yes, Layne did sing bass. Jose was the man in the center with a beard who pulled his sword up and very carefully lowered it, hand over the tip, to avoid Eli's out-stretched arms.. His baritenor voice blends perfectly. I am amazed at how much sound 5 voices can make and how much 'movement' the camera, lighting (Eli and Geoff), and stage can bring to what is basically a static group.
i don't know how old Cesar really is, but he's always looking like a 12yo kid . . . i'd forgotten how BIG his hair was until i saw another vid. That's impressive he could flatten it down so far!
The way they sound so cohesive is actually more about how well they match vowel sounds. It's really hard to get the exact same vowel sound across multiple people, but they manage it. It does a lot to help them be extremely cohesive. It's really impressive.
Jose was the one in the center. Cesar is the one all in white with the murky eye on the far left. I believe the song was at the beginning of Pirates of the Caribbean At World's End, when the pirates were all being sent to the gallows and started singing. Voiceplay did an absolutely incredible job on this song! Eli definitely stood out with some of his most amazing work yet. Geoff was brilliant as always, and Layne looked like he was absolutely psycho! lol. I adore Cesar's clear, ringing voice, and I was so glad to see Jose return after how great he worked with them in My Mother Told Me. I think this is their best work yet!
Geoff is otherworldly. Just a great rendition of this song. How lucky are we to have three groups like VP, HF & PTX all making glorious music at the same time? ❤️❤️🔥
Will you be on the list of broken reactors? Bet so, and with good reason. This is mind blowing considering it's acapella. Word through Patreon is that another is coming in a few weeks that's even more epic and Goeff breaks his low note record.
Indeed it is. I’m so glad that the word is spreading. as a patron myself, I know for a fact I will not be the only one who freaked out as much as I did. it’s hands down one of the best arrangements they’ve made and Geoff’s part… god- I can’t get words to explain it, jaw dropping in record breaking ways.
That last note by Geoff! How long can he SERIOUSLY hold that NOTE? Insanity! Every time I watch this, when Jose (playing the part of Barbosa) does the "all hands" part in the middle, I get goosepimples all over. Ceasar (playing the part of Calypso) has such a buttery smooth tone! SMH. Eli (playing the part of Jack Sparrow) could EASILY be lead in any metal band with that voice. I am not sure of who Layne & Geoff's characters are, but that look Layne does when he joins Geoff looks like he JUST escaped the insane asylum. You're right though, Geoff could easily be the foghorn on any of the maritime covers that they do, so crystal clear & raches down into your soul all the way to the soles of your feet!
Dude, I have a professional quality bass voice with a 4 octave range... Geoff makes me timid/humble, lmao. These guys are on a level not many will ever match.
It's in the very beginning of At World's End. The child starts it on the scaffolding and everyone joins in. Then the scene cuts to Elizabeth Swan in the small boat. Good opening to a fun movie.
They are out of this world fantastic. I love Ellie's vocal range. He's awesome. Of course Geoff in his low bass throughout really shines. They all blend so we'll together & with such ease. Their arrangements are done by either Layne or Geoff but all the guys have a chance to give their input. The final decision is made by whoever arranged it. Layne & Geoff are music geniuses.
Fun facts: The bell was a call to all 9 pirate lords to meet. When rung, it could be heard by all the pirate lords anywhere in the world. 'Fiddlers Green' is a reference to the sailors idea of heaven. A place where the fiddle never stops, the dancers never tire and the rum and tobacco never run out.
I think it is the 3rd movie, where there are mass hangings going on, when a youngish boy is set to be hanged, he starts to sing this, and the rest of the 'condemned' pick up the song and sing it......Cesar is on the left with the 'blind' eye, singing tenor, Jose is in the middle with the beard, the 'Captain' in this video.
So many stunned reactors. It's just remarkable. I don't always like everything they do but it's really good. The song itself is haunting and beautiful and they just enhance it.
The song is from the first movie. In the beginning of the movie you see pirate's being lied to the gallows to be hung, and you hear a kid singing the song before he and the rest of the pirate's are hung.
It's from the third movie of the franchise, At World's End. Jose (the dude in the middle), when he lifts the cutlass and there's a flash of light - it's a replica of the scene where Jack Sparrow returns from Davey Jones Locker and the green flash of light in the sky (in the movie) signifies that.
Enough said about the performance, perfect as always, if anyone is wondering about the sword Jose hoists, I have a kitchen knife the same. the mottling prevents meat sticking to the blade. Never seen it it a sword before but I can imagine it would be so much more efficient.
Great reaction video. Your videos are always spot on, when watching, can really see how much you get into the music and appreciate the skills and abilities of the performers. Keep up the reactions. On a side note, if you could ever do a reaction to Tom Walker & The Red Hot Chilli Pipers - BBC Quay Sessions. Its a version of Leave a Light on which is Tom Walkers song. I really believe you appreciate listening to that.
Thanks again for another great reaction. Will you please do a reaction video of Voice Plays version of Tennessee Whiskey. The runs they do are amazing. Especially the one at the end when they all together do a fantastic run so perfectly & in perfect harmony with each other. That is not an easy thing to do.
For some other good underwater kind of theme Geoff, try their Moana and Little Mermaid medleys, they are really good, you definitely get that vibe from Geoff in Moana I think
This is an amazing cover; and I love watching these react videos. If you like sea shanties like this, HomeFree did a Sea Shanty Medley if you haven’t seen/heard it yet!
Totally different feel, more cosplay and fun loving, but no less wonderful. And Tim dressed as Captain Jack Sparrow waving a tankard of beer around is a hoot!
I don't know whether or not someone already pointed this out, but... Here's the original scene from "Pirates of the Caribbean": ua-cam.com/video/lNRjt4rCymM/v-deo.html This video IS incredibly mind-blowing. And goes straight into my "Energetic-motivational songs" playlist, together with "My Mother told me". :-)
You should check out dan vasc. He is an up coming metal cover artist who doesn't get a lot of recognition and I think you would enjoy and be surprised by his voice
Just subscribed to your channel...this is probably the strangest request you will ever get, but can you react to the song Twisted from Twisted: the untold story of a royal vizier. It's a musical parody available here on UA-cam.
Voiceplay did an awesome job with this, but my favorites are Colm McGuinness' version, and the collab between McGuinness, Malinda, Bobby "Bobby Bass" Waters, and the Stairwell Siren. Check those out when you get the chance. You don't have to react to them, but you do need to at least hear them lol
Unpopular opinion, I know, but I don’t find this the best cover. Seriously, the collab cover by Malinda, Lauren Paley, Bobby Bass, and Colm McGuinness is just haunting and beautiful. This one is good, and I LOVE Voiceplay, but it’s just too…on tune (?) compared to the tone and context of the original.
Fog Horn he is. I think it was a good version, but not my favorite. I think it was too rock out for my taste on this song. Maybe I'm just a huge fan of the movie version. I agree it harmonized well.
Lighting --- which is extraordinary - by Eli and Geoff. When Eli messes with the lighting, expect to be amazed.

Either Eli or Layne do some undertone singing with Geoff while he is singing in a different register. I believe Eli has a 5 octave voice range.
The way they sound so cohesive is actually more about how well they match vowel sounds. It's really hard to get the exact same vowel sound across multiple people, but they manage it. It does a lot to help them be extremely cohesive.
It's really impressive.

The song is from At World's End episode when the they were hanging a lot of people. A boy starts it off before being hanged
And the rest of the people followed along in the song and instilling fear in the soldiers.
It was a brilliant start to that movie.
