The original version is by Cam, a female country artist, and they not only sang it in her original key but (imo) they improved the whole song with their harmonies.
I am not a huge fan of Cam's vocals. She is an incredible songwriter, but not the best singer, in my opinion. Home Free definitely made the song better.
Adam Rupp's percussion performance in this is one of the best of their entire portfolio body of work Home Free has done. Perfect example why instruments are not even needed or missed.
Yes, it's easy to take his part for granted when so much is going on with the singers. Then suddenly you go oh wow or wait, Adam is killing it. Without what he does, they would be just a really great quartet with great arrangements on some of these. What he adds into their songs brings most of them up to the highest next level! Good observation Tom!
Now you understand why we Home Fries say to have at least five videos under your belt before listening to Mayday. Without it, you'd never appreciate how wickedly awesome these men truly are. Good job.
Thought you would like this: Home Free caught up with Cam, tune’s original composer on the CMA Awards red carpet during a fun interview with Taste of Country (watch here). They also chatted with Rolling Stone Country, The Morning Breath, and many more.
Yep, there it is, the HF gem the Fries look forward to seeing reactors getting floored by. Nice flooring there young man. Btw, Chance is a bass singer too and in fact was the bass voice throughout this tune. Yet another example of the twin bass beasts ruling the nether regions, upper atmosphere and all points between. Add two stellar tenors, a world-class vocal percussionist, and spectacular arranging? Oh and they're all sweet n goofy too. What's not to love?
Tim's vocal range is sick. I don't know any bass singer who can sing tenor so perfectly. That's just crazy. And Chance's bass is fantastic. I love it when the guys switch roles. If you want to hear more tenor from Tim then listen to My Maria by Austin and Tim, it's great. Thanks for your reaction!
@Kevin Clements Brother's in Arms completely broke me! I can't even verbalize the words that I would like to say. I'm still shook, actually torn up inside! My Daddy was a wounded decorated WW2 veteran and I didn't get the chance to know him. So it smacked me very hard. I think it's Amazing! Stellar!
This is one of my favorites. So glad you waited to react to it. Your surprise at hearing the switch ups in the voices was great. Tim can sing in a beautiful higher tenor voice along with Austin & Rob. And Chance can hit the lower bass notes when needed. And Adam did a fabulous job as always with his vocal percussion. This song is sung by a woman Cam, so they sung it in a higher key to match the original.
Man, you've got to have the least cringy reactions, and your positivity is infectious. Thank you for the good times, and positivity through the days! 🤘
I heard this before I saw the video and I would have sworn it was Rob and not Tim at the start. Watched the video and just sat there with my mouth open. LOL
This is so good and I’m glad you know Tim’s voice well. Some reactors don’t know his voice and so don’t realize he’s the bass singing tenor in this. It’s a bit of a switcheroo with Tim and Chance changing places. Chance is the baritone/bass and sounds so good. Songs with Chance in lead would be I Can’t Outrun You, Yours, Some Girls Do. HF just released a new one called Brothers in Arms and it shows off Tim’s lower register. It’s amazing. Home Free is known for their harmonies and I just love them. Loved your reaction MG! Oh this song is by Cam, she’s a country artist.
I was leaving my boyfriend after 13 years when I first heard this. I was driving to work and had to pull my car over and cry. Cam has a beautiful voice, and Home Free takes it, as always, to another level.
The bass Tim was singing tenor and the baritone was singing bass. It's not an original, Cam is a female country artist that co-wrote and performed this song. If you want to see an Original of Home Free's try "Dreamer" because I love it so much and I think you will too.
GREAT reaction!! I couldn't wait to see your face when Chance hit that low note & you didn't disappoint!!! I love this guys, this is one of my favorites by them. My favorite is "Oh Holy night"
You can see why the Fries recommend you wait a bit to watch this. Too many people who see it early get confused as to what the guys' usual parts are. Also, the surprise factor isn't there. Chance did all the bass in this. Tim stayed in his high range for the whole song. All five of the guys can sing tenor. The original artist is a woman, and Home Free sang this in her key. Adam's beatboxing in this is phenomenal. For another song with Tim in his high range, check out Tim's original, Snow Globe.
I read in the comments on another reaction to this that it was their first (or one of the first) cover after Chance joined them, and that’s why they decided to have Tim showcase his higher range since they finally had someone else to take the bass. And I really love “Snow Globe”!
I love the switch out especially if you have become used to their “usual” ranges. They are so versatile and the harmonies are so amazing. Thanks for your reaction
I'm always hesitant to see a Reaction to Mayday -- you obviously waited long enough to do it that you caught the 'surprises' that make this one so special to all of us (Home Fries). Thank You for waiting ... it made watching you React worthwhile!! Chance sings Baritone with the group, but he sang Bass with other groups. He doesn't go as low as Tim, but he has an impressive 4 Octave range of his own :) When Tim is singing lead, the Bass you hear in the background is Chance taking over in the low notes.
"Mayday (Live)" is an audience-taken video that will definitely surprise you - it's quite different from the studio version. There are lots of live concert videos that - even given the varying quality of the devices on which they were recorded - are just phenomenal. You might also want to watch some of their original songs (both Tim and Austin are song writers & pianists) - Tim's songs include "Snow Globe", "Remember This" and "Understand"; Austin's include "If I Met You Now" on his channel and "Love Me Like That" & "Cold Hard Cash" on H/Fs.
thank you for a superlative, heartfelt reaction. this song reminds me, in terms of content, of one that was popular about 50 years ago. it was sung by Gordon Lightfoot and called "If You Could Read My Mind (Love)". Two amazing tear-jerkers born half a century apart. I hope some day you'll acquaint yourself with that classic.
This is Home Frees way of saying you just thought you knew what to expect from us! They are all very versatile! Chance sang bass / baritone in previous acapella group before joining Home Free! This was originally sung by Cam a female country artist!! This is a tragic song as you said! Nice Reaction!! !
The beauty of Home Free is that they have 2 basses, but they also have 5 tenors. All 5 members can sing in the tenor range. Even Adam Rupp, who has a beautiful tenor voice. Not an original for Home Free. The original is by Cam, a Country singer. I definitely, however, love the Home Free version better. The original doesn't really bring the emotions out like the Home Free version does.
Went back today listening to reactors I’ve listened to before to let them, you specifically in this case, how much I enjoy listening to your reaction; I like most genres of music, not a fan of twangy country or going off on a tangent jazz(though I like quiet, smooth jazz), and as a senior citizen I remember the music I grew up with; I love your quiet, informed descriptions of things & just like your all around joy in the music; may I make a recommendation for a fairly new video by Austin & Rob, two country singers try opera-Nessus Dorma; don’t know if you’re still into Home Free, but this will absolutely blow your mind; I compare it very favorably to Pavarotti’s version; have a great weekend, take care & may you & your family stay safe; peace & hugs & multiple thumbs up. 🥰🥰🤗🤗❤️❤️☮️☮️👍👍
No it was done by a young lady named Cam, i had never heard her before, but they kill it, even better than her version , mercy, this is their best song of theirs so far, and i have heard them ALL haha
Chance was the bass in the last group they were in. He brought more versatility to the group when they sing live. He can cover the Bass when Tim goes high. This was a favorite of mine. I, too, had never heard the original.
The video they dropped today, Brothers in Arms, features Tim & Chance in the lead - with some incredibly amazing 5-part harmonies. Enjoy your reactions.
The role reversal is definitely a shock, lol. Chance's B1 note at the end of his solo is pretty low for an average bass. Chance is technically a bass-baritone (higher vocal weight baritone; lower vocal weight bass), so to hit it with that authority is incredible.
I would love for you to react to their How Great Thou Art and Helplessly Hoping. I think most fans will agree that they are their best harmonies. Also when the Holidays come you HAVE to do Do You Hear What I Hear. Adam (beatboxer) did the arrangement and it's in my top 3 of theirs for sure. It's incredible.
I am impressed. You are familiar enough with the vocal ranges of the different voice types to not be thrown off by Tim's lead. The only other reactors I have seen who don't get surprised are opera singers or vocal coaches. They don't have trouble with counter tenors ranges either. Fun fact Chance sang bass for Streetcorner Symphony who were also on the Sing-Off program. Everybody is very tight in the acappella community. Streetcorner Symphony backed up Avi Kaplan when he first started singing again after leaving Pentatonix and taking a couple of years away from music.
Truly enjoyed watching your reaction to this video. The made this song so much better than the original in my opinion. Chance actually sang bass in his last group Street Corner Symphony that also were on The Sing Off but in season 2. They actually came in second place.
All of the boys were impressive and can we get an amen for the drummer...lol I mean one would forgive me if I didn't know it was Adam...lol Just beyond belief the talent of these guys....Great Reaction too
They are the only ones that, when harmonizing, they sound like one voice. Check out their video of AULD LANG SYN. I think that how it's spelled. You will here the "one voice" harmonizing.
Buck up...the "baritone curse" is nonsense ;) I think those classifications are more about the range a person is most comfortable in, or find the easiest. It certainly isn't to say they can't sing higher or lower. Personally, I think they're the most versatile of all! In these a capella groups, they're the ones who take over the bassline when needed and can fill the higher parts too. Look at Scott Hoying! Chris Rupp (one of the founding members of HF) has amazing range and even Geoff Castelucci classifies himself as a baritone. So, you're in very good company! As for harmonies...imo that's what makes a great a capella group. Check out their cover of Seven Bridges Road...never thought I'd hear anyone do it as well as the Eagles but...they do!
Now that you've heard Tim's tenor, check out an original of theirs. Snowglobe. Spoiler alert... Tim goes higher. Another one, their cover of Stop, Drop and Roll by Dan and Shay. Tim sings with the tenors.
No it’s a cover. The artist name is CAM. I have no idea who she is. Sorry people, I’ll probably be bias from now on though. I can’t imagine anybody covering this song doing better.

They just dropped Brothers in Arms. You MUST listen to it! The harmonies are incredible and you will be blown away by Tim going low, low, low.
I still have goosebumps from the premier!
It's amazing!!
Yeah, it's amazing
Almost subsonic. Tim and Chance co-lead Brothers in Arms and their voices blend. Adam SINGS, no beat boxing in this one.
It's absolutely glorious.

Well, technically, Chance is a bass-baritone, so he can cover bass parts (just not as low as Tim) with a reduced vocal weight.
I am always tickled to death to listen to Tim singing tenor all the way thru and Chance on bass. It is so wonderful. 🤣

Peter Hollens featuring Tom Foust just dropped another video too: teach your children and Home Free just dropped Brothers in arms!
I love the switch out especially if you have become used to their “usual” ranges. They are so versatile and the harmonies are so amazing. Thanks for your reaction
If you'd really like to hear Tim's higher range, you should listen to Austin Brown and Tim Foust "My Maria." It's not a Home Free cover.
Snow globe is another showing off for Tim. It's his song. My favorite non Christmas Carol.
they always seem to capture the emotion of the song so well
