  • When most people think of estheticians, they picture relaxing lavender aromatherapy and gentle facials. While that pampering might be ideal and sufficient for some, other people need a little more help to get certain skin conditions under control. And that’s where medical esthetics come in!

Is a medical esthetician a real thing? Before we dive into what a medical esthetician actually is, we need to talk about the usage of the term “medical.” Not only can that term intimidate those who would want to go into the field, but it can also be misleading to some people. In fact, the NCEA (the National Coalition of Estheticians, Manufacturers/Distributors, and Associations) has stated that estheticians should market themselves only by the title appearing on their license, and not promote themselves in any other way. In the state where I practice Optometry and own an Esthetics salon, there is no such thing as a medical esthetician!

I am a esthetician. I worked in the field of cardiology for 30 years. Later decided to attend school for esthetics. I LOVE helping people with their skin care concerns. I am now semi retired but I must say that I had more satisfaction preforming all the services on skin than cardiology.

I literally just shadowed an Esthetician in the hospital and maybe her title doesn’t say medical, but it says clinical aesthetician… And from my understanding, this can be used interchangeably. So it definitely is a real thing if hospitals are labeling them as clinical aestheticians in the oncology department specifically.

    Hey Dr. D, great video.
I have sooo many questions. I’m hanging in as well as possible. I did receive upneeq today. Haven’t tried it yet, however when I am able to see you soon, I have a lot of questions. I hope to be able to keep them all. When I do get to you, I may have a list. Possibly, if an option is available to help me in area of aesthetics I will be sure to make time. I can only speak for myself and what I’m experiencing and I agree totally with you and others having an aesthetician. My situation is very hard and at times absolutely debilitating. As age hits us, changes happen. It TRULY has affected my life. I would love to have opportunity for a facial with an aesthetician who does understand and appreciates what we go through with eyes and age. I have never had one. It’s more than a facial, especially when/if you have ocular rosacea. At times I want to hide. You know me. It’s a struggle. I prefer to TRY and fight to keep my eyes looking good as long as possible and it’s difficult. I am confident that with you, hopefully getting onboard locally with opthamology and aesthetician, and keeping you (my bestie), I will make it. I need to know exactly safest for me. Now, I’m good with 2 eye makeup products, I try one at a time out of fear. I have to learn my “flare contributors” , and go forward with next. Hopefully, eye cream color HOPEFULLY. Ive heard it said many times “Dr. D will get me looking 30 yrs younger”.
Honestly, I am so Blessed to have found you. Your entire team is wonderful and so helpful. I can’t bare the thought of not going to NC to see all of you.
Next time if I have to do 2 days in a row, fine with me. I need so many questions answered about certain things. I appreciate you so much. Your knowledge, compassion, and concern for others. I look forward to seeing you all soon. Gotta few things to do first. I may need a few minutes prior to ask questions. Please, I don’t know how you decide to do your videos, I will say I believe aLOT more aging people are unaware of certain things, are possibly using incorrect products, and I would appreciate and love to see a video on aging gracefully and with strength and knowledge. I, personally am struggling with it and I have the absolute best of the best optometrist, DED specialist and aesthetician ever. You know who? YOU!!!
I thank God for you. Your compassion and being their for me when needed. I feel, in my opinion everyone care for your skin and eyes faithfully from beginning. I never was taught how nor did I know. Now, it’s hurtful. Beauty (so I’ve heard) is skin deep. Reality is we’re all going to age. Hooded eyes, yes they aren’t attractive unless you know what to do or can afford $$$ for cosmetics surgeries. I’m not wanting anything cutting my actual eyes again. I definitely need a brow lift. My vision is being affected. Not to mention feeling so unattractive. So, Dr. D, you’re my Blessing, I will see you asap, and I will have my list of questions. Thanks o everyone on your team. You are a true Blessing! Keep your aesthetician, she helped me pick correct foundation, and so far mascara. I have a ways to go but I’m sure I will get to a better place. I have already made it so far in a bit over 6 mths.
I’m not ready to give up. Our eyes are so important and truly I’ve been through so much, I feel I could teach a class. Lol
    Since July 2019!!!
    I’ve cried many tears.

Great video! Thank you so much. I love skincare ! I am a personal trainer and I also suffer from dry eyes and rosacea. I have suspected certsin cosmetic or skincare products to be contributing to my condition. I really love skincare and I was trying to figure out the difference between esthetician and aesthetician. I am currently doing prerequisites for nursing, aspiring to work with a plastic surgeon or dermatologist but now feeling unsure. Maybe get my degree and go for esthetician 😊

what is the state board test in FL for medical esthetics? what regulatory agency oversees medical esthetics in the state of Fl? how many hours in the state of FL are required for para-medical or medical esthetics in the state of Fl? What state agency administers or receives for approval a certificate?

This isnt true in Canada. You dont get taught anything to do with regular esthetic in medical esthetician school. there seprate programs and titles. You do a clinical practicum like a nurse and learn chemistry and anatomy of the skin/hair. Regular estheticians cannot practice doing medical procedures but a medical esthetician can.

No state has any certification for a para medical esthetician. Any esthetician can cause themselves a para medical esthetician in the usa😊

Just because there is no regulation doesn’t mean that it doesn’t exist. I just shadowed an oncology aesthetician in the hospital, her hospital badge literally says “clinical Esthetician” clearly she had to undergo extra training and get certified in other areas before getting hired. This is like saying aesthetic physicians isn’t a real thing… technically there’s no board for that. It’s either Derm or Plastic Surgery residencies. No such thing as aesthetic residency. But that doesn’t mean that Aesthetic Docs don’t exist and it’s not a real thing.
