DCS Ka50: Flight and Trimmer tutorial late 2020

- A first of several Ka50 tutorials. This one explains how the Ka50 works in flight using autopilot and trimmer as well as flight with the autopilot turned off.
If you find the module complex or difficult, don't fear. It's not a very difficult module to learn once you take a few minutes and learn the combination of autopilot and trimmer as well as when to fly her without autopilot.
I go through most things you need for normal flight.
Next tutorial will be centered around weapons and after that we will move on to cold starting the beast. - Ігри
I cannot tell you just how useful your tutorial is. After watching other tutorials on the subject of KA-50 trim, I thought I knew how to use the trimmer only to get frustrated when I actually fly in DCS and get constantly thrown for loops. After watching yours, I went back in, did what you explained, and all of a sudden, it all came together. Thank you for the best tutorial on the subject - at least for me. I did one other thing - I remapped the trimmer on my joystick to a button that has two-positions: one pressed in and one release. That helped also. Part of at least my problem was also that I had the trim mapped to a push-button (grey thumb button on Winwing FA-16EX stick) that only had one position which is to press it. So, it didn't matter that I was holding it down thinking that trim would occur once I release it because it would actually trim as soon as I pressed it. Once that was changed and following your instructions, my flying experience of the KA-50 is completely changed for the better. Thanks very much for your help!
Hey! Thank you so much for watching and for the detailed answer!
It's great you found a different solution (and shared it) for button trimming. One other way to check is also how the module is trimmed under "Special" in the DCS settings. From there one can choose instantaneous trimming or other solutions. The important thing is to find what works for each and everyone of us 🙂
Are you using Black Shark III?
Finally one good tutorial fo this chopper. This is my first chopper and im having hard time to wrap my head around everything.. Collective, how trimming works. This tut is really good and easy to follow!
Thank you so much for the kind comment and for watching! I'm glad it helps, hopefully I'll have some more videos up soon!
The choppers in DCS are truly fun!
This is an excellent tutorial - really one of the best I’ve seen on trimming the Ka-50. Helped me a lot. Thanks.
Thank you so much!! It's makes really happy to hear! Will be releasing some more in the (hopefully) near future but not sure if they will be Ka50 or Mi24 at the moment. Thanks again!
this is a divine explanation of how to fly and what to get involved in and when and what it is used for, this would not be better explained at the military academy, thank you very much for this demonstration video 👌👌🤗🤗
Thank you very much for the kind comment! I'm really glad you enjoyed and got something out of it! :-D :-D
This is actually the best explanation of the trimmer and AP on the Black Shark I’ve seen. Well done man 👍🏻
Thank you! I'm glad you enjoyed it and thanks for taking the time to comment!
Professional Tuition. Well done. Thank you.
Thank you very much!!
I've watched a few vids on this subject and your is by far the easiest to understand!! You speak at a really nice pace and demonstrate what you are saying, you would make a good flight instructor. What a shame there aren't anymore on the shark
Thank you so much for taking the time to comment and with such praise as well!
I do intend to make more videos and tutorials once real life lets go of it's stressful grip for a while, both for the Apache and the Shark. Now with the Black Shark 3 out we've got a few nice new toys to play with as well as an amazing new 3D model, well worth making more videos about 🙂
Thanks again 🙂
Perfect! I am new to helicopters in DCS although I do understand the principals of helicopter flight. I chose the Ka-50 because one, its just so cool and two, I am familiar with the Russian weapons systems. Your video is the best I have found on getting started - many thanks for taking the trouble to post this tutorial.
Thank you so much for taking the time to watch and comment! It helps me get some new ones out. Real life has been way over my head the past year and I haven't got anything new out yet. I'm really glad it helped you and I agree, the Ka50 is really cool! The new Black Shark 3 module is well worth the upgrade if you have the possibility, great new 3D model, IGLA air to air missiles and more.
This is absolute GOLD Wilbuz, bravo! Subbed. (your instructions are the clearest I've seen on this subject)
I bought the KA-50 months ago and never got around to learning it (putting it off by watching vids and convincing myself that it's too complex). Tonight I will fly it, hopefully ...
Once again bravo
Thank you so much for the kind comment!
It's really not as complex as one might first think. I believe you will enjoy it a lot! Let me know if I can help more and good luck tonight! 😃
My DCS route has bee Huey Mi8 and now I’m starting to learn the Ka50 3 I like your vids😎🇨🇦
Hey! Thanks for the positive comment and feedback! I'm glad you enjoy the videos and wish you good luck with the Ka50, it's an awesome bird!
Great video, glad I found it. This helped me quite a lot.
Thank you! I'm glad it helped! It's a quite easy bird to fly once you understand it but it's a bit hard to wrap the hear around before that. We're not to used to semi-fighting an auto pilot.
Thanks for this calm and patient tutorial, I think the pace is great, no need to shorten it. I have got the Ka-50 in my "library" forever, but never had the time/ patience to really learn it. Everytime I just jumped into the cockpit for a few minutes and was wondering about the "weird" controls, giving me the feeling that something is wrong with my joystick setup etc. ... :-)
Thank you so much for the great feedback and taking the time to comment!
I'm really glad you enjoyed it and felt it wasn't too long and boring.
I believe a lot of people feel the same about the Ka50, they have it but it feels too time consuming and weird. It's really a fairly easy chopper to get started in once the trimmer is understood 😊
@@wilbuzllf5057 You are welcome! Especially helpful are also the sections about the necessary keyboard or joystick mappings. The endless list of used keys in the options is scary, but it is incredible useful to break it down to the few which you actually need for the given action to perform. Do you know, if there`s also a shortcut for zooming in on the instrument panels left and right? Something like "Num0" for the front panel? Those names combinations like "LWIN/ CTRL/ ALT + 1 to 9" etc. don`t do anything for me. :-( And when I look down using a TrackIR I can`t zoom in, of course. Oh, and the dedicated zoom button zooms in way too much. ;-) Would be great, if there`s another way to take a closer look at the panels to your left and right.
A great tutorial. I just started to learn Ka-50 as my first chopper, and with your video I finally got hang of it how to use autopilot and trim. Subbed.
Thanks! I'm very glad you're getting the hang of this amazing bird. I've been too tired and busy to upload anything new lately but there will be more content for sure, if nothing else once the Apache is released. Thanks for commenting and subbing! :D
Thank you for making this video. Some good info simple & to the point. Now to practice. I can fly the huey (not the best) but the ka-50 man i had the toughest time trying to figure out how to fly it. You have given me an excellent info.
Thanks for watching and commenting! I'm so glad it helps! Compared to other helicopters it's so different that it can be hard to learn at first but once you get the hang of it and learn to trust it's ability to fly on its own while you handle the weapons it turns in to a true beast!
Well done. Thanks for doing this. Helped a bunch!
Thank you! Glad it helped and thanks for watching and commenting! 😀
thanks for this, I learned a lot! cant wait to be proficient in this whirly bird!
Thanks for watching!
Give it some time and practice and you'll get there, a lot of it has to do with memorizing controls for weapons. After than one can start sneaking around and doing attacks.
I findest it hardest to fly the blackshark at the low speeds and altitudes when youre trying to hide and shoot things.
Nice tutorial!
Thank you!
Yeah it can easily become a fight against the autopilot at low speeds. One thing I do is trim the autopilot for pretty much hover, as close to it as I can easily come and then I just use the stick to fly around at low speeds. That way I know that if I just release the stick all entirely the chopper will come to a hover by it self. Other times I use the flight director instead, both works, it's kind of what you feel like 🙂
Thanks for watching and commenting!
This helped me so much, thank you!
I'm glad! Thanks for watching and commenting! 😀
Awesome tutorial! Thanks a lot!
Thank you and thanks for watching! :-)
Great tutorial, thanks! Was struggling to work out if/when to use FD but going to try and just get used to flying in this mode. Cheers :)
Hey and thanks for the comment! I'm glad it helps!
I FD has its uses but to me, if one is to fly the Shark effectively it's by using its ability to fly it self while I use the sensors 🙂
Nice tutorial !!! now im going to practice this stuff - i was useing trimm wrong ( just short press not hold) - thx for explaining
Thanks! I'm glad it gave you something! One can just simply press as well but I find it much easier to hold it as it disables the auto pilot control while holding.
Thanks for watching and commenting! 😊
Thanks a lot, very well explained.
Thanks for watching and commenting! It means a lot! 😃
Great video!!
Thank you! 😀
Great. Tutorial nicely done
Thank you very much and thanks for watching!
Awesome tutorial!
Thank you and thanks for watching!
Great video very helpful. Fyi collective isn’t a throttle thats the two yellow levers next to collective. Collective changes the angle of blades, maybe think of it as how much air it collects the more angled the blades the more air it will push through and more lift it will create
Thank you!
Yup! I know you are completely right! I've mentioned it as throttle as this makes the most sense for those new to choppers coming from planes, well, in a way at least even though it's not correct. But you are very right and I'll start using collective from now on as it it will otherwise create some real confusion when we actually talk about the throttle :)
@@wilbuzllf5057 yes that makes sense i can see how your trying to help out the newbies with these tutorials. Iv just started to learn this module and its great. Looking forward to the apache release myself. Great flying btw 👍
@@sim_racing_jay_6870 Well that was the idea but reading your comment I realize it wasn't the best idea from me. While it may be more difficult to explain/learn "collective" rather than the word throttle this also means one would learn wrong from the beginning. It's always better to learn it right from the start as re-learning something wrong is always harder. I really appreciate the feedback as I'm new to the video stuff :-)
As far as the Apache goes... YUM! I've been hoping for that and the Mi24 for several years and now we're getting both the same year, how awesome is that? Meanwhile the Ka50 is a superb module and I can highly recommend the Mi8 as a starting point for the Mi24.
Thanks again :-)
@@wilbuzllf5057 don’t worry about it too much mate. Yeah really cannot wait till its release. Hopefully sooner rather than later
Great video 👍🏻
Thank you and thanks for watching!
great video,
Thank you and thanks for watching!
You might want to look into flight director mode, the 5th autopilot button. I myself have got to read up on it and test more but it is like flying with trim button down but still have some damping.
Thanks for the advice and heads up! I actually do use the flight director mode some but I haven't covered it in any videos yet. I thought it better to cover no auto pilot at all for starters. I will get to the flight director as well though, I'd say it's the best mix for flying manual.
I turn on the flight director for quick maneuvers and off once that's done. I found turning off the AP completely is actually quite difficult to stabilize the helo e.g. for landing.
Agree! The flight director is the better choice most of the time but turning it all off can be very fun! :-) The flight director gives you all the control though without any of the negatives. Thanks for watching!
Hello mate! Great video! Do you have any tips for not letting the rotor blades colliding in high speed flight? When i press F2 i see they are almost touching every time, is this something i've done wrong or is it just the way the heli goes?
Hey man and sorry about the late reply! Real life disturbed the important things such as DCS and UA-cam responses!
How fast are we talking about here? I would say as long as you don't actually make the blades collide or destroy the rotor otherwise, don't worry about what F2 shows you. You can destroy the rotors for sure but most of the time when it happens it's due to excessive maneuvering during high speed flight.
If you're going more than 300km/h I'd suggest to slow down, if nothing else to save your ears from the over speed warning, the aircraft can handle higher speed but it's very much "at you own risk" when you do it.
@@wilbuzllf5057 Roger that! My cruise speed is around 220 km/h, but when i press F2 i get scared everytime, thinking that i'm about to crash, thanks for the tips!
@@moraespedro96 Glad to, hopefully, help! :-)
Good tutorial... but no Flight Director... with this ON you can fully control the chopper without turning off all other autopilots and no need to trim it. I think this is an important topic in this tutorial and is missed. To turn the heli without returning to the initial position, you can press the trimmer button or, temporarily disable the heading autopilot, turn the heli and enable it again. For me, this option is better to prevent trim to pitch or bank.
Thank you and you are right!
I'm quickly touched on the flight director in other videos but nothing really specific. It is the better option, quick to use and easy to handle.
Great video! but i got one question, im currently using mouse and keyboard to fly the ka50 but it is very hard to use the autopilot and trimmer like the guides say so, do you think it is possible to learn on mouse and keyboard or is a flight stick nessecary for flying this helicopter?
Hello!
Sorry about the late reply!
I think it is possible but very difficult. A stick (any cheap stick) would be better than a mouse and combining it with a keyboard will work fine. The problem with a mouse is that you can't keep the nose where you need to, you have to actually keep moving the mouse in order to maintain the attitude. With a stick you just push it and hold for example. But like I said, any joystick what so ever will be better than a mouse.
@@wilbuzllf5057 okay, thanks for replying!
@@derenzo9476 No problem, hope you get it sorted and get in to the Ka50 some more!
After watching this, you must have 'rudder trimmer' enabled in the game 'special' settings?
Hi!
No I never have rudder trimmer on under the special setting for any module. Neither choppers nor warbirds. I always fly with everything as maxed out in realism as I can.
What made you think I had it turned on?
@@wilbuzllf5057 I don't ever enable it either. When you use the rudder to turn and then hit the trim button and it holds your rudder input, I figured that must be with rudder trim on, but I haven't actually tried trimming after turning, so I will now. What exactly is rudder trim for then?
@@karlhungus545 Ahaa I see! No the rudder doesn't trim at all as you know. The reason it seems to keep the rudder trimmed as well is that I always keep my feet on the pedals and apply the amount of rudder needed throughout the turn. It can be a bit tiring if I do a long turn and even more tiring in the warbirds without rudder trim but it's something that one gets used to.
The rudder trim option is indeed rudder trim, if you enable it the trim button trims the rudder pedals to where you have the pedals as well. If I remember correct, the Ka50 module has this as standard before but as it wasn't realistic it was removed and the option to enable it again was added.
Does anyone have a link to the Valhalla 3d printfiles for the controls?
i click the trimmer button, hear it click but the stick doesnt go to the trimmer like you show
Hey!
So if you push the stick forward, press the trim button, release the trim button and then the stick, the stick in the game doesn't remain in its forward position?
Are you aware there is an English language cockpit also mate?
Hey!
Yup I know there is a mod for it which makes the digital display and some other things in English as well, I already have the actual cockpit in English. The reason I'm not using it is that I'm not sure if the online servers might deny my connection when using it, never tried it really. Do you know?
Thanks for the info btw.
@@wilbuzllf5057 Its been a while since I played KA-50 but im sure it had official english cockpit
@@Crazy_Gambler Hey!
Yup! I had the cockpit set to English but all the avionics were Russian. It was suggested to me in another video that I check out "avionics language" which took me about 5 minutes of searching before I actually found it. I had it set to native before and set it to English now which is great, finally I understand the error codes :D
The trim doesn't work for my pitch and roll axes.
Have you hot started the aircraft or cold started it? Make sure you have the three autopilot buttons by your right knee turned on (all except the altitude hold). These should be turned on if it's a hot start but they are easy to forget when cold starting.
Also, try and holding your trim button when making direction changes, it might be easier to get a feel for it.
Let me know if it works or not!
/Wilbuz
@@wilbuzllf5057 I had the aircraft hot and the 3 autopilots turned on but also when I hold the trim button and put the aircraft In the position I want and than release it, the little diamond chapped thing in the HUD changes to the direction (how it should) but the pitch and roll input does not get copied.
@@wilbuzllf5057 I fixed the problem you need to turn Force Feedback in the settings off. But still thx.
@@DePoli thanks for letting me know! Nice to hear you found the problem, I had no idea you were using force feedback joystick 😊
@@wilbuzllf5057 The point is I don't use a force feedback joystick in DCS is a force feedback setting that I needed to turn off. :-)
If u hav feedback from kamov.. Apache... Hind.... Hip.... Gazuel. Who is the best to fly with,,
It's a difficult question actually. The Apache is amazing in every way. In multiplayer it's superb fun if you have a human copilot. If you don't have someone to fly with you I actually like the Ka50 better in multiplayer. In single player they are both fun as you can jump seat to the hunger in the Apache. The Hind is pure fun as well, less modern but great fun to fly. The Gazelle is highly underrated, it's amazing to fly as a team of two or more in multiplayer, true map of the earth, quick and nimble. You have to work for your kills in it as the missiles are short range. Hats to say, I like them all 😁
All I can say is people should watch a different AP tutorial for the Ka 50. There is so much wrong in this tutorial. No offence, thanks for the content.
No offense taken, sorry about the late response. I'm not sure what you say is wrong, for flight and trimming I still say this is very much right and it seems to help a lot of people struggling with it. If you talk about the actual autopilot use then that of course is a while other video.
I WISH I COULD FLY LIKE YOU OMG which one i have to choose: Central Position Trimmer Mod or Instant Trim (Default) in the Options - Special section? please help me :((
Hey!
Keep flying, you'll get there!
I use Instant Trim in the Ka50 but try both and see which you prefer. 🙂
Thank you! i hope i can make it! i want to fly like you, so smooth so awesome@@wilbuzllf5057
Thank you for the kind comments! And thanks for taking the time to watch and comment! You'll get there, just practice and be patient 🙂
