In 2003 I had the privilege of Producing Editing and marketing a commemorative DVD compiled of attendee submitted videos of the 20th Anniversary of the Pontiac Fiero in Pontiac MI. I have pulled the original files out of my archive to share them all with you here on UA-cam --------------------------------------------------------------------------

With so many ideas for the car can't believe they would cancel production. Pontiac could have offered the 232 hp 4 cylinder in 1989-90. I know the Vettes were only running 250 hp in that era but i know at that i would have bought one. great video thank you
I suspect the reason the convertible never made it into production is because GM didn't want any sales being poached from the Corvette convertible. Not that anyone who could afford a $25,000 Corvette would have even looked at a $10,000 Fiero back then, but I've given up trying to figure out GM management's logic, then or now.
artistmac: Even though Chevy & team Corvette were terrified of the Fiero during its entire production run because of it's potential & tried to get its funding cut & the program terminated more times than I have fingers because of the serious damage the Fiero would do to Corvette sales if Pontiac was allowed to fully develop the car the way the designers & engineers wanted, ie- V8 engine, large 4 wheel disc brakes, 4 speed automatic overdrive transaxle, they actually were successful in causing the delayed introduction of the 5 speed manual until half way thru '86 & the Lotus tuned suspension that was delayed until '88, I don't think that's why the convertible was never approved for production. I've had the opportunity to ride in 2 different Fiero convertibles, 1 an '85 4cyl former notchback, & 1 '87 V6 former fastback, both custom converted by the owners & even though they both looked good, they both suffered from the same problems. At lower speeds, exhaust fumes were very noticeable driving around & the exhaust noise was a little distracting & at higher speeds the exhaust noise itself was almost deafening even with factory exhaust on both cars. It also seemed to me that both cars also had high speed stability quirks that caused them to track alot different than I'm accustomed to in my '87 GT. I wouldn't go so far as to say they were scary or unsafe, just different. To me, both issues were directly related to there being no fixed roof panel & rear glass. I didn't talk to the '85 owner about anything because it was my first ride in a convertible Fiero & didn't know him well, but the '87 owner is now a friend I see at small car shows occasionally & eventually asked him what he thought in case it was just me! He said he rarely drives it anymore because of the exhaust noise & kinda regrets converting it, & his wife refuses to drive it or even in it. Even with the issues I noticed, I still would ask for another ride because like you, I'm a Fiero lover & addicted to them, but for the average person thinking of buying a new Fiero back in the day, I don't think they would have been impressed & Pontiac & GM knew that, & didn't want another public relations debacle since they were still dealing with the '84 model warranty & recall issues, & the bad press from the 4 cylinder engine fires that continue to haunt Fiero owners to this very day because of the myriad of smart ass comments we have to put up with from haters. We've both probably heard every lame ass Fiero fire joke there is!!! Some cars just are not meant to be convertibles I guess!
@@rogergoodman8665 Thanks. I didn't know it was the vette guys who delayed the 5spd intro in the fiero.
That convertible with a supercharged 3.8 would be incredible!!
I had a 1988 GT. I loved the car even though there were cooling system issues. It drove great
Love the yellow and Black formula fiero. If I ever hit the lottery, I am going to do it.
thank you very interesting history that i never knew
This is absolutely incredible!
It's funny how they were developing the Super DUTY Iron Puke 2.5 when they were working on the OLDS Quad 4. Love they way they put the intercooler into the rear spoiler on the turbo fiero .
Super Duty SD4 and iron duke were completely different engines. Nothing in common. Fiero 4 cyl had a few improvements from the prior iron duke and was called the Tech 4.
I was here that day in my '87 GT w/t-tops
Nice, I was there with some buddies and thier Fieros (all 3 of us had 88 Formulas). Was a great time!
Nothing like fieros luv building them. I do youtube too we have to keep this excellent car alive
hopefully you live close enough to collaborate on more videos
@@christiansass forsho. Im coming up to the 40 anniversary i will be bringing my fiero
I talked to one of the designers for fiero and he said the biggest issue they had was the fiero was never suppose to be a sports car it was suppose to be a budget friendly fuel efficient mini car and anything over the 2.8l had it smoking the corvette supposedly they tried the turbo 3800 the grand national had and the 4.3l but GM shut down any of the ideas that would even allow it to be close to the corvette's performance and as anyone who knows anything about cars in the 80s the power output of any car in the 80s was sad to say the least
Why is there a self destruct button in the huffaker
I loved the GT. I blew up a 2m4! It threw a rod and set on fire!! It was in AZ. No water and a total loss lol what a firetrap!
Awesome video
Thanks
@Christian Sass!I love the sliver one. with the two radios and the backseats with lots of space. and the others threeI love also. greater video.
thanks
I am 5'10" at 210 pounds
I went claustrophobic in the rear seat of My Brother's 2005 Mustang
No Way for even trying to get into a Fiero rear seat
The 2+2 was built there is one in my home town for sale for $5000
I want to do a video review on that car. do you know who owns it?
still for sale no probably no right?
FIERO ❤
You know what the rarest Fiero is? The one that doesn't ride like a Western Flyer little red wagon. FFS, General Motors. Such a sharp little car with a crappy interior and a suspension that is as well designed as a conestoga wagon. I went to buy an 87 fastback and after the test drive decided that I could do without one for the rest of my life.
love how most of the prototypes have the old school two piece 5 star rims lol
That convertible is my dream car.
I went to high school with a kid that ended up owning the yellow horror featured car.
I was always hesitant to buy one because of the low power of the engines. Closest I came despite this was a Mera in red.
I’d love to own a 88 Fiero GT
That body mod at 3:45. Goals.
I’ll never understand why they would crush any of these cars.
Jean shorts and camcorders😂
The turbo one would be sweet does anyone know what kind of wheels are the ones on the red convertible
Always thought the 2+2 was cool!
I like any Fiero that's not red.
The Fiero was a car that would put tbe Corvette to shame and thats why they dropped it just like the Buick GN. CNt have a car that out handles or outrun GM's flagship Corvette and the Vette is just a horrible turd to work on.
Weren't most, if not all of these crushed during gm's reorganization?
Self destruct?😂
Lol i have a 1984 gt
Maybe ya mean an '85 GT?
Sure, and I've got an 82 with a car seat in the middle
No 308 package???? Tat sucker is rare.
what do you mean no 308 the engine im going to look it up but how is that rare?
Pontiac had slot of turbo cars should have stayed alive our generation couldn't enjoy them like the boomers did
