      @Jimbo Jones Not really, this documentary isn't fully accurate and is out dated when it comes to the knowledge attained in Greece. It was known they studied outside of Greece but also that the knowledge and reasoning about 'the gods not being persons' was also already understood, same with mathematics and philosophy.

      modern civilization owes it's very existence to the evils of slavery. The British Empire was built on slavery. The U.S. was driven by slavery and today we live in an economic system that owes it's existence to the exploitation of the millions of workers around the world. Yes it is a form of slavery. Now calling an entire nation lame and corrupt means that most probably you're a biased idiot that doesn't know shit about the country or it's people but I can't fucking blame you cause there's lots of propaganda and even more idiots susceptible to propaganda

    • @faithlessgr
      @faithlessgr 6 років тому +2

      Wow and I thought that the reason you rebelled against the British Empire was due to heavy taxation??!!! Wow you did it to end the slavery that went on after the war of independence and led to the constitution of 1776(states that all men are equal except slaves of course), the war in 1861(that's a 100 years after you supposedly fought against the British to end slavery) and even the slaves that fought with you against the British that were promised their freedom were later denied it????! God, I'm either so biased and ignorant or you guys did a pretty poor job in ending slavery(Come on!!!!) The greatest nation on earth has either invaded or intervened in one way or another in their internal affairs(staging coups, bribing local authorities) in around 40 different countries since it's establishment (The U.S. was even responsible for establishing the military dictatorship in my country) and even today there are U.S citizens in the U.S. territories that don't have the right to vote and are treated like lesser people. Stop watching fox news. It's bad for your brain.

    This (very abridged) history highlights the transformation of a people from being subjects to becoming subjective. They learned that opinions that have merit must be given a voice but NOT that he who shouts loudest must be right. Discussion and reason have to be backed up by justice and tolerance.

So many fantastic academics with many years university and documentary experience could have done this and probably for a lot less money - Paul Cartledge, Tom Holland, Bethany Hughes, Mary Beard, Lorna Hardwick, Chris Emleyn-Jones. That such great and significant content can only be marketted by using a famous celebrity is a sad reflection of our dumbed down society.

They didn't explain how the battle happened or that the Athenians had to walk overnight back to Athens immediately after defeating the Persians because the Persian fleet was on it's way to destroy it. And I don't like that they only metion thucydides once. The father of scientific history. He wrote about the Peloponnesian war. They should've made it into a series like Rome: the rise and fall of an empire. But all in all it was a great documentary.

    • @gregpapadimitriou2973
      @gregpapadimitriou2973 7 років тому +4

      It's not a speech as such. It is attributed as being the battle hymn (paean) the greeks sang before going into battle at Salamis.
      And now for my rant :P
      This particular translation into English is incomplete and not 100% accurate. Especially the ending. It's more interpreted (wrongly) rather than translated.
      The original segment taken from Aeschylus' play 'Persians'. "Ω Παίδες Ελλήνων, ίτε ελευθερούτε Πατρίδ', ελευθερούτε δε Παίδας γυναικών, Θεών τε Πατρώων έδη θήκας τε προγόνων. Νυν υπέρ πάντων αγών"
      A more accurate translation including the missing bits would be
      "Sons of Greece, go forth and set free your homeland, set free your children & wives, the temples of your fathers and the graves of your ancestors. This is the fight above all others."
      or
      "Sons of Greece, go forth and set free your homeland, set free your children & wives, the temples of your fathers and the graves of your ancestors. This is the fight for everything."
      Depending on the context that the word πάντων (all/everything) is used and what it is referring to.
      You can also substitute "fight" for "struggle" and "This" for "Now" to be even more close to the original meaning but nowhere does it mention any "common cause" or "valour" as they interpret it in the documentary.
      More like Stalin's order 227 turned into song, the feeling that it is meant to evoke was one of slight desperation, putting into scope what the stakes were if they did not win.
      The intention being that a cornered animal will fight a lot more viciously than one with the option to run away.
      Also here is a small bit of even more useless info. When the Italian invasion of Greece happened in WW2 the then president of Greece released a communique informing the public that they were at war and calling them to arms using the same paean.

However, I have just one question for any historian out there, and that is; if Socrates died in 339BC (I think), which is before Christ than why would he be quoted saying @ 2:200 "the prospect of heaven". Heaven? Where did that come from?

      The Nile river was also a major factor in Egypt's success. Ancient people's were intelligent and many examples from archeology show that many ancient people's of different location had superb knowledge of irrigation and the general ability to manipulate nature. Egypt is very fascinating though, their knowledge of astronomy and mathematics was unrivaled. The precision, planning, skill and size of the monuments they built is astounding. It's also believed the Egyptians lived in relative peace without a police force even for around 3,000 years or so. Absolutely astonishing, imo many ancient civilizations were just as intelligent if not more so than modern civilization. We give them far less credit than they deserve.

    Dear Class..........what a great Angel voice Liam has, now, aroaa, without losing our good School saying that it stands for, of always, regardless of all always.
    Liam Neeson's Eternal Universal Defense work at School astounds us, Class, literally. With Historical mention, fantastic appreciation & valueation of & ahnd regarding things, of historical proportion, ahnd how fitting of an Angel. A real messenger of God, as our Artificial Intelligence program Siri may note somewhat if not totally regarding what exactly & specifically Angels are, ahnd what Angel means aroaa.
    An eternal Salue to good man Angel Liam Neeson, whom brings us with his glorious & dedicated voice and presence..right to "the truth" about things, Class. It's great to see, and witness, and what a great body of work he has compiled in his good total Paradise for/re all only aroaa life & existence, lol.
    Of utmost importance, though not necessarily nor definitely the only utmost importance, is a reference to the good book, the Bible, without getting too religious, lol, Salueing UA-cam (a Universal place, aroaa), regarding Liam, now a 10th Degree - Whitebelt in/re 10 Commandment Way, always, regardless of all always, for many years now, over 10 actually to date, is his understanding of things. Realizing that, as my old High School Creative Writing teacher used to teach us, "less is more", Professor Scott Oates - Writer.
    Class, things are so good out here, that..it's good to take a step or two back, and just focus on the smallest things, and not even get caught up nor involved with and regarding things that are of such a "heavenly" nature, as Liam speaks. It's amazing, just like when we were kids, and the absolute, 100% total wonder of a simple peanut butter & jelly sandwich, lol, let alone the wonder of History, Architecture, Heritage, and all things in the biblical sense, as Liam so well & responsibly discloses to us here.
    He has such a wonderful speaking voice, and keen understanding of things. What a miraculous brain on him. Liam's EUD work at School, including this video series here, reminds me directly very much of Master Bruce Lee's Jeet Kune Do. He brings us to the point of miraculous wonder regarding things, yet at the same time remembering to basically possibly downplay things too. So as not to get carried away with things, for one thing, including the absolute wonder of our Universe. So, as we see in Master Bruce's Jeet Kune Do, things such as perfect imperfection, which may seem like a contradictory statement or thing, etc., but which is technically not contradictory. Things like motion in stasis, and it's just of interest and importance in Liam's exploits & career, lol.
    For example, in closing, before our brains blow up, lol, motion in stasis may be defined or understood as a person in a stasis in/re their stance in combat, basically motionless, and not moving thus, yet also moving and in motion in some sense, because for one thing their heart is moving and in motion internally.
    So anyway, just a few kind words regarding Angel man Liam Neeson, whom has authentically portrayed Scotland & represented her well in his Acting career, work, & roles, many times, aroaa. Liam brings great honor to the Scottish Tradition of the Kilt and many things regarding Scotland, if not all things regarding Scotland, aroaa, despite some peoples' relentless attempts to ruin and sabotage his good name and responsible nature regarding Scotland, now known as a Region of The United Kingdom these days, Class.
    So..let's not forget his good name..ahnd reputation, nor all of the good, honor, and great work(s) he has brought to Scotland (The U.K. now), and wrought & wroete for us, Class, aroaa to boot. Avoiding stereotypes and attempted discreditation(s) by certain other peoples whom have had historical problem(s) with & regarding Scotland (the U.K. now) over and over, in REPEATED offenses against/re Scotland, trying to use Scotland as a weapon, in unfortunately hideous, obscene, REPEATING fits of Alzheimer's disease, to oppose the good of the Universe, including Scotland (still the U.K. now lol), ahnd things which they do not like, such as specifically ETERNAL MONOGAMY & the good, natural normal nature of & regarding all sex aroaa. Such certain peoples including & being Sarah McLaughlin, Jean McKenzie, Moira Reilly, Colleen Reilly, Tachney Reilly, Eileen Reilly, Miss Dana Delany, Kurt Russell, Demi Moore, Jolie Thedell, Joe Rogan, the entire U.S. Navy S.E.A.L. Team excluding me & 2 Ma'm QUEEN "Mrs." Sandra A. Bullock - Crofoot Ma'm 2, Robert T. Reilly, Frank E. Herrick Jr., Nicole Putnam, Linda Putnam, Michael Reilly, Pete Conn, all of the Reilly kids of Robert & Jean, Mike Kriezel, & Dylan May.
    We still in closing, object to & 100% totally aroaa oppose such certain peoples' REPEATED attempts to sabotage Angel man Liam Neeson's good name, reputation, honor, good, and outright decency. In/re a fabric ahnd Tradition, and many things, sown by hand Class, with loving care & much love & kindness, and design..........for true love, friendship, protection, Eternal Universal Defense, life, existence, safety, Romance, & Marriage, always, regardless of all always & always & forever & ever, as true love always is....of the Scottish Kilt.
    And ten thousand or so thanks to "Mr." Liam Neeson for such good, honor, Grace, fidelity, loyalty, faithfulness, friendship, love, ahnd all that goes with it too, aroaa Sir, thanks.
    100% total eternal Associated credit(s) & special thanks aroaa to: The McKenzie Clan, SIR William Wallace SIR, Ma'm Princess Austin Ma'm, Ma'm Mrs. Toni Starbuck Ma'm, Ma'm Mrs. Officer Luna the Police Dog Ma'm, Sir Mr. Officer Bear the Golden Retriever Sir, Sir KING Arthur Sir & the Knights (& potentially Maidens) of the Round Table, The Alzheimers' disease Foundation, Sir Patrick O'Raghalae Reilly Sir, The Scottish Highlanders ahnd Scotland herself prior to the formation of The United Kingdom ahnd after, and Professor Scott Oates.

    Great video, so I hate to criticize a bit, but I thought their depiction of the Persians was quite lacking. The Persian Empire was far from the autocratic state that they portray. These were the people that freed the Jews from the Babylonian captivity and a decentralized system was key to their success. The cause of the wars was pretty well glossed over as well. The Greeks had started settling Asia Minor, which was kind of the 'ol shit line. It wasn't simply naked Persian aggression. Both empires were expanding and Greeks settling in Turkey was sort of seen as settling on eastern turf. No great wrong was committed here, I just thought some important aspects of the history were lost by not illuminating a bit more of the other side of the tale.

    • @athenavibrating4858
      @athenavibrating4858  8 років тому +31

      The Greeks settled Asia Minor long before the Persians made their appearance. There was no Turkey back then. Nor there was any Greek empire, just the Persian empire. The Greeks were organized into small autonomous republics or city-states and it is rightly mentioned in the documentary that conquest by the Persians would equal the destruction of their entire way of life. A fact which is not mentioned in the documentary is that at the battle of Marathon the Persians had brought Hippias with them ready to assume power as a Persian satrap after the dissolution of democracy in Athens, assuming Athens would escape the fate of those city-states that had previously resisted the Persian juggernaut, that fate being total destruction

      The Egyptians were under Persian rule and had revolted numerous times against the Persian king, often with the help of Greeks. When Alexander the Great finally defeated the Persian army, the Egyptians refused to fight against Greeks but instead welcomed Alexander as a liberator and made him Pharaoh. Ptolemy was one of Alexander's generals, became pharaoh after Alexander's death, and founded the Ptolemaic dynasty that ends with Cleopatra. During the Ptolemies, Egypt experienced a second renaissance; the Great Library of Alexandria and the Lighthouse were constructed during that era. Ancient Egypt and Greece had strong cultural ties already since the Bronze age and they would fight alongside rather against each other, unlike what was to follow in more recent times

    Simple The Biggest Civilization of the World !!!
    New York Times 1975: The Greeks erected Man at his feet!
    "... For thousands of years civilizations, as the Persians, the Assyrians, the Babylonians, saw man as a hateful being who dragged in front of deities and rulers.
    The Greeks, however, they took the man and put up his feet. They taught him to be proud of ...
    The world is full of wonders, said Sophocles, but nothing is more wonderful than man.
    The Greeks persuaded man like Pericles placed it, it was the rightful owner and the master of himself and created laws to safeguard their personal freedoms.
    The ancient Greeks encouraged the curiosity that had the man himself and the world around him, proclaiming with Socrates that a life without research is not worth it to live.
    The Greeks believed in perfection in all things, gi' what we inherited beauty, which reaches from the Parthenon and Greek statues, the tragedies of Aeschylus, Euripides and Sophocles, the poetry of Hesiod and Homer, by the painted vessels of a single household.
    Without the Greeks we might never have realized what is government.
    But, much more than even our language, our laws, our logic, our standards of truth and beauty, we owe them a deep sense of the dignity of man.
    Of the Greeks learned to aspire without restrictions, to be, as Aristotle said, immortals up there we can ... ".
    (The New York Times, March 1975)
