To my knowledge learned in my teenage years while studying to become a teacher and in studying the history of education I found that the amount of slaves was so overwhelming compared to the slavers class that the risk of rebellion was a permanent condition. The slavers were in danger of dying at the hands of the slaves at any moment if they were not prepared. Military training was indispensable in order to maintain order and submission over the slaves. It is known that a daily raid over the slaves camp was performed as a form of training and to kill the youngest and strongest slaves. This was the fundamental reason for the entire life requirement of investing into the arts of combat and physical condition. Terror was the method of domination over the slaves.

15:24 You doubt he had any concept of the pity of war? I completely disagree. I'd be shocked if he didn't. Rallying the men for war is not synonomous with having an utter disregard for the ultimate waste of human life that war provides. He and the men knew that they had to fight, regardless of whether it was " a pity " or not, so without any other options you'd better double down on your passion for war or else you'll have a race of men busy contemplating "the pity of war" rather than hardening their hearts and fighting until the last man.

In section 9.3 it says: “Hence it was that the Ephors (as Aristotle tells us), when they entered upon their office, caused proclamation to be made, that the people should shave the upper lip, and be obedient to the laws, that they might not be under the necessity of having recourse to severity. I know enough of Sparta and each time regardless of depth and insight I confirm the profound sociopathic nature of all class divided eras and " cultures" . in particular the Spartans are anecdotal and prototype of the failed attempts of a dehumanized society to survive in a world made as their image. One of brutal animalistic clashes and devoid of love and solidarity . one of disrespect for human life and dignity. This are lessons of history to avoid and learn how a society should not be organized. Nothing more could be learned form them. If something good could be learned from that experience let me know and I'll gladly share it with any historian , archeologist and intellectual willing to use that contribution. History after all exist as a study to learn from the past more than learn the past as simple information.

@Parker O’Brian - Peloponea was part of Albania the region is çameria. Albanians were tortured and massacred by modern Greeks because they wanna to invade Çameria/ South Albania. And they did expel Albanians so they part even today is occupied. To this day those Albanians were never able to go back their homeland and not 1 Albanian can speak or declare themselves as Albanians.
The so- called Ancient Greek is build on Albanians back and and the ancient Greeks r Arvanities/ Today’s Albanians.
Spartans were Pelasgians/ Illyrians/ which are Today’s Albanians but Greeks stole and build everything on a lie.
So Parker u must be a part of Albanian 🇦🇱

This documentary just spreads some of the most common misconceptions with the hopes of retaining viewers and avoiding controversy. I suggest you do some research on the Spartans. The athenians were much more “warrior-like” than the Spartans. The Spartans were allies with the Persians for a long time.

17:15 : Actually, the hoplon shield was not held by the arm only, but was also simultaneously rested on the left shoulder, making the weight much more "bearable". That is the reason for the big concave rim on the inside of the shield. Do your homework please, documentaries.
