    Cities: Skylines - Building a realistic European/UK city (really old series!): • Starting A New City! -...
    In the first installment of Europeanism, we build a big central train station, before quickly directing our attention towards one of the main islands of the city, building a large central plaza situated in front of a monumental eclectic style city hall. The area surrounding this structure is dominated by a mixture of different European architectural styles from Paris, Berlin, etc, featuring residential, offices and street-level commercial, shops and restaurants.
    Music;
    Sappheiros - Aurora
    Frakture - Hindsight
    Nomyn - Infinity
    Liquid Memoirs - Alone
    Europeanism is a laid-back Cities: Skylines sandbox project mixing different European architectural styles and principles of urban planning and infrastructure. It follows no set narrative and is not geographically specified to any given region or country within Europe. The story of the city is whatever you as a viewer envision it to be. Good music and (hopefully) good builds is the mantra.
    (I have no idea whether it will be a big series, but I as I want to work on multiple projects to allow for more creativity, challenge myself, avoid burn-out and provide more varied content - I decided I would rather share my experimental work on this city (and others) than not 😊)

    It would be extremely interesting to hear if any of you guys can come up with a story for this city as it unfolds :-) As mentioned, being relatively locked into a set theme and narrative in The American Dream, and before that, Project Japan, I have been wanting to build something mostly free of historically correct restrictions and rules, with good music (subjective) and some good Cities: Skylines footage (even more subjective, crap!) being the mantra. Hope you guys n gals will understand - Anyways, shouldn't be long before a new episode of The American Dream, have a great weekend everybody! :o)

      I LOVE your builds! But I always wondered (because it was my favourite) what happened to the European/UK city series? I really loved it:( Also, could you base your public transport onto that of London, where outside connections merge in with inner ones, commuters use trains, etc.? Thanks!

      Given the French-esque feeling of the initial area, your could call it Granquour (a Francofication of the combination of Grand Court) for the rather flash cathedral and courtyard in front.

    For about 35 years I have been designing a small European city (Roienbourg), capital of the kingdom of Cambrianne (a mountainous country where Bretagne is now) in paper in map form. I have been tweaking it for years, using bits from hundreds of places all over Europe. Work, a marriage, a divorce (!) and kids have got in the way in that time. I discovered Cities: Skylines only yesterday by chance from a comment on a Tom Scott video. Wow, this is much how I imagine Roienbourg would look. You’re creating my vision. You sir, are a genius. Thanks for sharing. Absolutely love it.

    I think the street are too wide to be authentic European cities. European cities are packed, dense, and pedestrian friendly. But I can see this might be influenced by Parisian Rational Plan and not the traditional European Cities.

    That central station at the beginning that you built looks similar to Vienna's main station, as its platforms 3-12 are also elevated. platforms 1-2 are underground on the original track that runs through the city and was the first public train transport inside the city with it going between elevated and underground. What I'd love to see is you trying to recreate an existing european city (not a capital, that would take years and a ton of mods.)

  • @abyz738

    As most European cities have an established association football (soccer) club, I would definitely say that having at least one and possibly two clubs (as most European cities unlike American ones typically have more than one club competing in the nation's preferred sport) that perhaps could represent their neighbourhoods, like an established team in a more well-off neighbourhood versus a more grass roots but still strong team with loyal fans from a more working class area. Definitely though I would recommend putting in a soccer team (I would say the same for your American Dream series as MLS is consistently expanding) as I don't think any major European city, or any European town for that matter, doesn't at least some sort of team. Most small towns have a professional team and larger cities can have as many as 10-15 professional teams of varying levels and leagues and possibly hundreds of amateur ones.

    Some advice for people who live in the "younger" countries of the world like the US or Australia:
    When building european cities, keep following things in mind:
    -Many big european cities are over 1000 years old, which means, they have almost everytime a small and old city-core which is the "old district", the oldest part of the city.
    These districts are often very packed and dense, with small roads which are today mostly used by pedestrians, so focus on pedestrian roads when building this old district and smash in buildings over buildings. In my hometown, the old district consists of very many half timbered houses and before the War, there were almost only half timbered houses packed over and over, every meter counts.
    -Think about where people 1000 years ago would have founded a town. Mostly directly at rivers with a small harbour for trading or where two rivers are merging, this gives control over taxes and was a attractive place to start a town.
    -Dont forget cathedrals and churches, this is an old rule in european cities back in the days: The more wealth a city has, the more churches and cathedrals it has (Its the same thing with skyscrapers these days)
    -Try to think about the layout of the main roads. To mention my hometown again: The main roads today are still the same roads as 1000 years ago.
    -General trick: Try to imagine how a city evolves over a period of 1000 years, even two world wars did not change the system of streets very much.
    Imagine to build district after district without destroying too much of the old structure but instead adding some streets carefully to make the city bigger and more modern.
    Hope this helps a bit =)

      Fimbulwinter-Outdoor great tips. I’d also add consider city walls circling the old area, anything between rectangular and oval in shape. Buildings with lots of alleys and hidden yards and squares between them.

    • @fimbulwinter-outdoor
      @fimbulwinter-outdoor 4 роки тому

      @@tasty_fish good addition. The city walls of my hometown were torn down in the 20th century and were made into a huge park, so now there is a "green ring" surrounding the central city which is also protected by law. no buildings are allowed there.

    The city of Poort-Aan-Der-Lange-Kets (Port along the long Kets), nicknamed Portville by tourists due to the hard-to-pronounce name, is the capital of Nieuwburg, a small nation on the southern dutch-german border. As the name suggests, it's and inland port city on the estuary of the River Kets. The port is the 4th largest inland port of western europe, and the main source of income for the city. People mostly use the Kets Centraal Station to get in and out of the city, which is operated by Deutsche Bahn.
    Across the station you can cross the river onto the "Onze-Lieve-Moeder Rotonde" (Our loving Mother roundabout), which holds a statue of the goddess Belena, a goddess worshiped by the ancient Gaullic tribes of the area and a popular symbol of the country. Carrying along you enter Arthur Rooijens Straat, a short but busy shopping street named after the country's first Prime Minister following it's independence in 1831. Even further along this street, you finally reach "Het Zonnenhof", the largest plaza within the city and the front area of Portville's biggest tourist attraction, Het Kopere paleis (The Copper Palace), the official Residence of the Nieuwburg royal family (also known as the Family of Nieuwburg).
    Behind the palace and along the river lies a lonely monument simply known as Het Herdenkingsmonument, which shows all the names of civilians and soldiers killed during German Occupation in World War 2. Off to one side of the palace are Sint Trudo's Basilica, the biggest catholic cathedral in the city, and the 6-sided City Hall. On the other side is the Protestant church, known to locals as "Tweetorens" (Two Towers), The National Parliament and the unique circular red University of Art and Music.
    In the mid 1500s, the city had a major fire which almost burned down the whole city. As such, almost all of it was rebuilt in the renaissance architectural style that still defines the city center. Most of the population speaks Dutch, but German is still taught in all schools as a mandatory subject and most of the population speaks it fluently.
    I've got a bunch of more ideas, but I'll leave it at this for now. Might make a flag for the city and for the country, even if this isn't picked up.

    Good video - but I spend most of the time wondering "but how did you do that?" Please show people how you do things, and not just what you do.

    Could you (maybe later) make a Russian-ish project? Blockies, bad cars, pretty Czech trams and other... Post-Soviet cities got much of common, but they also got many diffrences. (St. Petersburg that was called Palmyra of North, Siberian houses that were made of wood, Minsk got many Stalin-era buildings) And in C:S there is no good post-Soviet projects.
