A mystery no more! So does this mean that you can mechanically release the cable therefore bypassing the need for diagnostic equipment to put the brake in service mode I wonder??

It doesn't twist the cables... it pulls them, as you discovered

Thanks for the tear down, its interesting. i wanna share something, it could help some other DIY guys to find a fix. We replaced a lot of hand brake actuators on RRsport and disco 3/4. till one day, brand new genuine actuator fail programing with SDD. boss said we gotta take the whole unit out again, was too much hassle i decided to strip it in situe. i swaped the motherboard on new unit with motherboard from dead unit. programing went throu straight away. this car is still on the road, its been 2 years. anyone found what is the issue on the mechanical part of it (which creates the screaming noise, must be a spinning gear)

Fascinating. But this was a deal-breaker for me. I was looking at low-mileage Discoverys and have decided against them. My wife has a Renault Scenic with one of those damn fool ridiculous bits of kit - also broken, expensively!!! Colossally stupid "innovation" for people who can't pull a simple lever up between the seats.

You don’t have mechanical knowledge... you don’t need to cut the wires:)))
