This is such a great track! For those looking to study Danny Carey more, here is an actively synced drum transcription of Forty Six & 2: ua-cam.com/video/NRRgYZJRICw/v-deo.html
The section before the final chorus (the "interlude"), is ( 7/8 x 7, 9/8 ) repeating (so seven bars of 7/8 followed by one bar of 9/8, with this pattern repeating). Once the drums come in, some additional 7/8 bars are added. Otherwise, this song is more often than not in 4/4.
If you follow the guitar's 8th note rhythm, counting is easy using the following 8th note groupings ( 1 2, 1 2, 1 2 3 ) x 7, ( 1 2, 1 2, 1 2 3, 1 2 ). At least, that's how I'd count it as a drummer. ;-) Check out the aforementioned actively synced drum transcriptions for all the time signatures used in the song!
As always, thanks for the entertaining reaction videos!
Justin Chancellor wrote the main riff to this song while on his flight from England to the US for his audition as the new bassist for Tool.
As a Tool enthusiast from the beginning this will always be my favorite album. Love the new stuff, but this is where it's at for me. Lots of stress relief for me in this album.
Agreed, this album came out in my early 20s. It still sounds amazing after all those years.
@@jasonbierley4860 Me too! 45 years old and I'm grateful to have had Tool in my life for 75% of it.
This is their second full album from 1996, so it's earlier Tool. They were slightly more simple on this album, it's Lateralus and on where accents and counts start going crazy. 👍
It was basically a mix of old tool and new tool. Which makes it really interesting. Hence my profile picture.
< Speaking of profile pictures...
This song is Justin's, he brought the baas riff over with him when he joined the band from the UK!!!! 🫂 Nothing better watching Justin humping his bass live to this song!!!! 🤘
😆 Truly some groovy, rhythmic humping!
One of their very best. It's truly shows their exquisite musical skill and superb songwriting
That's the brilliance of the song.
In the instrumental break, it's representative of the song "evolving", which is the lyrical theme of the song. It evolved from the early 4/4 into 7/8. I have always thought that was such a brilliant metaphor. It feels similar, like the song is the same species...but it is just a little more complicated.
I don't know what any of those numbers mean but I love tool I'm actually glad to don't have to sit there and count while listening it seems to distract people that do count
Fun fact: My mom introduced me to Tool in 8th grade. They've been my favorite band since!
I always enjoy watching you react to Tool songs for the first time. They are always worth the listen!
My favorite song off this album. I was waiting for you to realize the 3 measures of 7/8 and one of 4/4. I think they do it in the bridge as well. I also wonder if the anxiety of expecting weird time signatures is due to you hearing more of their stuff of Lateralus and Fear Inoculum. Aenema was their second studio album and I don't think they were getting too crazy with time signatures, at least not to the extent they did with Lateralus.
I think just playing early tool and knowing when to drop the beat and begin anew is very possible - can't do that with early genesis, dream theater🎭, and modern tool. There was later genesis songs with Phil Collins taking up singing once peter Gabriel left which also have weird time signatures like "down and out" which can also just be played through adding a fill. Like early tool, the 80s genesis had complex but recognizable songs one being "land of confusion” with this one being covered by Disturbed and I think David reviewed it. I will see about linking it.
Dude... Enjoying your videos, great content as always. Do Vicarious next and prepare to get your mind blown
It might be simpler than you're used to from Tool but this song is still fire, always loved it. Personally I am a fan more of their Lateralus and beyond days rather than their earlier simpler stuff, but I can never resist rocking out to 46&2!!
I've been traveling so I'm just now seeing this. I'm happy to see you're finally getting around to my favorite song of all time
One of my favourites from this legendary band 🔥🤘
Danny’s drum break in the middle is one of the crowning moments of music history. So glad you did this track!
I love Tool very very much, they are amazing and Maynard is one of the greatest singer i hear ! Danny is a perfect trumer ! Greatings and love from germany ❤️ ❤️ ❤️ ❤️ ❤️ ❤️
to be fair this is my favorite tool song. The bassline is just so cool man
It's like a sister song to h which is very guitar like to the extreme this one is bass driven, bit flat, low and rhythmic and h is high and melodic and sharp at times.the whole album is great other than some weird message song. It sort of screams, "record this CD on tape 📼 and cut out the joke songs then give it to your friends, because we just want people to listen and come to our shows."
@@FoxUnitNell Its even more of a sister song when you realize that Useful Idiot is at the end of H. and the beginning of this, almost like this is another triad of tracks meant to be listened to together for an even better listening experience.
I guess thats why they named that track "Useful Idiot" because it has a use, even though its a silly pulsating static sound.
love the rocky horror picture show in ur intro lol. love tool 2 :) thanks sir for ur reaction
One amazing thing about this song is if you go back and listen, the bass and the guitar swap phrases between verse one and verse two- they literally completely swap lines. It took me years to notice.
I believe this bass riff is one that Justin brought to his try out for the band. I could be mistaken though.
LOVE watching you geek out to time changes, Dave. I'm not the biggest Tool fan, but damn if this isn't fun to watch.
I'd always recommend this song to introduce Tool to somebody. Always. I love it so so much.
How have you not heard this? By far my favorite Tool song to play. Probably because it took me forever to get it just right. There's a couple very very slight open d notes that if you miss, you're gonna be totally out of sync. I still love this song.
theres a cover of this song done by abunch of 10-13 year old kids that is the best cover of any song ive ever heard almost. they nail it. and the girl singing kills the vocals
Absolutely worth checking out!
ua-cam.com/video/mYKLvYGqaC0/v-deo.html
O'Keef's students killed it!
Even though it is a great cover, I really do not like how she sings the song.. :P
I for one am glad they have a few basic songs 😆, trying to learn this stuff on guitar and picking apart everything Adam and Danny and Maynard and Justin all do in these songs is the only math I try to still do as an adult. I'm still learning how to count time signatures lol, but there's guys like you David that can do it for me 😆. I wanna understand but for whatever reason I don't, love your Tool reactions dude🤘
push it I think is always gonna be at my #1 for Tool songs , just the whole mystic creepy scratchy sounds they put into it with this desperate sounding vocals from Maynard and into a story you can listen to a million times and still fall into it just like the first time hearing it again. it gives me chills to this day just thinking about it😬
Watch the okeefe music foundation it’s brilliant. I’m not sure which version I prefer ????
I'm definitely more of a fan of Tool's rendition, however, the kids are excellent too... mind blowing to be exact. 🤯
I agree the kids are awesome, excually this cover excually got me into tool
I'm shocked that you had never heard this song before cuz it's one of, if not their most mainstream song, but I know you wouldn't lie to us. This was my favorite Tool song for a while until I started listening to more of the Lateralus album.
Yeah, this album back in '96-'97...was my go to for experiences other than the mundane. the model of the jewel case, with the 3-D type of artwork, and it was moving, viewing it with the jewel case, then inserting all the other pics, from the insert, and just like oh wow, what did I just see as a teenager at 17-8 years old?!?!? or...just...wait...what did I just experience? listen to?!?!? 🤯🤯🤯
Now you need to check out the Okeefe kids cover of this song.
This album will always be my fave.
Tool
Disposition, reflection and triad all in one package ,called The Holy Trinity
Have to listen to all In a row
Not sure if you can handle it )
Back when I watched your Schism reaction, I said that, as a bass player, you’d appreciate 46&2.
Now, I take a bow and say “told ya.”
Man, you've got to check out the O'Keefe Music Foundation kids cover of this song. Truly amazing.
One of my favs🤘
Always show up for your TOOL reactions. Well done!
DH Fun fact: When the bottom half of the letters on David's shirt are off screen, it looks like he's wearing a Tool shirt... For example 12:46
It must be fate.
This song did that weird time signature changes like in flame plus Soundgarden and others to various degrees but tool always has class because they consistently school other bands trying accessible math rock.
Surprised you’ve never heard this one. It’s been regularly played on commercial rock radio for the past 25 years. Even if you’re not looking for it, it’s hard to escape hearing it. lol
You should check out the kids from Okeefe music school doing this they are amazing!!
Yes, yes, yes!!!!! Please watch that video!!!!
yes!!!!!!
I totally see you with that shirt my friend. That and Soylent Green. :)
I love the "Proggy" side of Tool but for me Opiate, Undertow, and Ænima are top Tool.
#toolarmy Virginia regiment answering the call to jam with Mr. Heretic. Where we at?
watch out, the fans are definitely providing this track so that you do the O'Keefe Music Foundation version where young dude goes HARD on the klaves
O’Keefe Music Foundation does a cover of this, it’s mind blowing and you’ll probably have the same reaction as you did to Disturbed Sound of Silence.
LOVELOVE THIS BAMD AND SONG
Takes me right back to high school
I think people fall into the trap of counting beats. Just enjoy the song.
Danny and his drumming, OMG.
#ToolArmy
Now you you need to watch the kids from O'Keef Music academy do this. Pretty damn amazing.
favorite TOOL album for the urgency but well crafted tracks. guarantee they didn’t keep count ha!
The main riff is King Crimson's "Frame By Frame" riff jumbled
I like that song too. Sleepless has a pronounced bass too but tool's song has a rapid bass maybe 2 levels above the rest of the band.
I cant remember if this was before or after your reaction to this song covered by O'Keefe Music Foundation
Before.
🔥🔥🔥🔥
Musically, Tool may be better thank Pink Floyd. Both send you on a journey, but Tool's mastery of crafting Rock n Roll stretches for infinity on that spiral.
i think the focus for this one was more lyrical than anything else.
I’m sure you’ll hear this comment a lot, if you already haven’t, But you need to check out the video of the kids from the music Academy that cover this song. It’s pretty cool
Good
Me: "Hey David, would you mind listening to this song I've been working for years? It's incredibly personal to me, it's finally finished, and I'd really like to hear your thoughts."
David: "Yeah man, let's do this."
_Play_
David: (mumbling) "One, two, three, four, five six, seven, eight - no - .... One, two, three, four, five, six, seven..."
_Song ends_
David: "Yeah, man. I really liked that part where you had eight and then seven. Then it seemed like it was gonna be seven again but it was eight. Loved it."
By the way, this was a scenario I pictured after having seen several of your videos, and it's just in good fun! But it is how I imagined it would go lol
That drum solo ish part tho
It's amazing. Follow allow to the drum sheet music here: ua-cam.com/video/NRRgYZJRICw/v-deo.htmlsi=vKnD6j--DSJWtFei&t=260
Maybe check Descending out?
Dude, your “fuckin what?!” In the intro gets me every time bc that’s what I say hearing your score lol….buuuuut I’m an ogt fanboy form ‘92 & think they should get 10’s across the board for every song but step back & realize that’d be boring af so, please keep up the honestly on your reviews. ✌🏼
Nice Orwell Tee
It's actually the retro Cobra Kai shirt from The Karate Kid.
have you ever listened to the finnish band Amorphis?
ua-cam.com/video/T8aH5HVx_0c/v-deo.html
First of all- I can’t believe you haven’t heard this. Second- you MUST listen to the O’Keeke music school version. Absolutely mind blowing.
I think someone requested that one, I vaguely remember seeing it in the que.
This was their hit song after sober on undertow. It (I believe) is where tool first found themselves and found that distinct TOOL sound
I wish they had recommended the lyric video that explains what this song is about. It's fantastic
🔧😍
but, it would possibly be better, if ya grew up listening to it and heard it growing up to it. the whole album is worth a listen. as you can see the growth. those of us who grew up listening and hearing about Tool, then being thrown into them...I remember looking, after hearing about how great they were. back in "Grunge" days. No internet haha. but, the evolution, it's worth listening to the evolution of Tool. it's Quite a journey. but, worth it.
The Album was dedicated to the late great comic Bill Hicks.
They also toured with brought back King Crimson. A big influence for them.
I love your reviews, but you missed the particular value of what this song offers. The progression of the music tells a story parallel to the BRILLIANTLY expressed evolution and advancement of the narrator. Without that, any analysis is incomplete.
It also explains why the breakdown is so fantastic and important. That's the 44 to 46 change, central to everything.
Mohaaaahaha I love to count
He’s what 10 seconds in and he’s completely stumped lmao… ah yes.
If youre gonna punch me punch me already!..ad plays
Yea there’s no way this guys never heard tool lol
I had heard of Tool, I never said I haven't. I bought the Undertow album when it came out, I just never listened to anything else by them until I started this channel. Please get your facts straight before you decide to make baseless, unsubstantiated accusations about me, I really don't appreciate it.
A song about achieving human genetics to get 48 chromosomes. Most humans have 46 chromosomes down syndrome people have 47 chromosomes. What would happen if someone got 48?? 😳😳
Super Saiyan.
Gorillas and dear mice have 48 chromosomes. We would rather become more animalistic than we already are if we evolved (devolved) to have 2 additional chromosomes. It's the last thing humanity needs.
@@zenobiaw831 agreed.
I heard that it's a fusion of two chromosomes of chimpanzee like ancestor which allowed humans to get were we are, but that can be seen as a down side if we all end up be erased by some nuclear fallout.
And awesome reference to the super saiyans, David, lol.
Tool askn can humans evolve further.
its 7/8 whole song. not even close to 4/4 u messed this up real good
