I don’t know why people tell you not to count when listening to tool songs. Seeing the joy in your eyes once you work it out is one of the best bits for me. ❤

I personally enjoy the music *so much more* once I can follow the time signature changes. As a drummer who makes transcriptions of Tool's music, it makes sense; my first concern with any music is often its meter.

That's what excites me the most when I listen to Tool. I totally get it. And I love it because he always works out the timings that I never could lol.

I enjoy that you count. It’s helps us less musically inclined people appreciate the band that much more. Not only can we hear how good they are but we can understand what it is they are doing that makes it sound the way it does. I’ve learnt a lot from watching your reactions, keep it up :)

I've heard this song so many times (it's my favorite song off this album) and I still get teary eyed and chills every time I hear it. It is absolutely beautiful.
This track gives me the chills every time I listen. The crescendo for me is when Danny goes to the gong . The hair on the back of my neck stands up at that point. This song resonates in my soul !!!

Justin does some crazy stuff with his bass when he starts throwing the effects in, though. Sometimes it's easy to mistake his parts as belonging to Adam Jones.
I prefer when you count. Not just for your own enjoyment, but I get to learn and understand time signatures more.

With Tool the riffs, the harmonies and the chord progressions are always quite simple. Finger-wise, it's all easy to play. But the rythms, the dynamics and measures with all their variations are always very complex and hard to play together as a band. That's the true strength of this band.

Feel you with counting : my 7yo son is neurodivergent and he ENJOYS music by counting the rythme (he's a Metallica fan rather😊); everthing for him is math, geometry, phisics, which makes him happy! I know nothing about counting music, but i love your reactions so much!
It is often said music is a language. Dave's language is in musical measures. If this song was in German most here would not undersyltand and enjoy. He sang for well over 5 minutes, which is long for a normal song and there’s a live performance of this titled, Chicago open air, where he he literally sings his last lyrics and walks off to let the band be the center piece for the last 7 minutes. Time does not pass normally while you’re listening to Tool. It is conceivable to achieve immortality by creating/playing a mix wherein there are no gaps between their songs.
Hey it's your right to enjoy listening however you want to and if your enjoyment is to count, then what is the problem with doing what you want? A lot of musicians enjoy counting, it's how some people were brought up thru music. That all being said, I enjoy that you enjoy counting cause I'm too busy listening to other things to stop and do what I'm not that great at, counting. So you do it for me and nothing wrong with that IMHO. I enjoyed this reaction you did, especially with Tool I tend to learn a bit when I watch your reactions to Tool. I always struggle with time when it comes to Tool and I suspect that others do too. I think that you're the kind of person who needs to count to get more in touch with the song which is your way of more enjoyment. Keep counting and rock on.

Hey Dave! Just wanted to let you know that watching you count in your videos over the last couple of years has gotten me into the habit of counting new songs that I listen to. This has also led to appreciating songs with more complex time signatures. I definitely appreciate how true you are to yourself!
They accelerate just enough to let you know they don´t use a click for their studio work. This song is the masterpiece, the center the climax of this album.

My father was a guitarist. When I was around four he noticed I was playing Chicago on my kid piano. The next day a keyboard and piano arrived.
I feel so much validation watching this reaction. I truly believe that this is Tool's #2 masterpiece behind Lateralus. It's actually a very close call for me between this, Wings for Marie 1/2 (emotionally) and Rosetta Stoned (musically), but I keep coming back to Descending. I'm one of the few Tool fanatics who wasn't as impressed with this album. To me it's this, 7empest, and Pneuma - not much else really moves me. But Descending does it all. It evokes strong emotions, it's technical, its epic. Just love it. Great reaction as always David

I missed my chance last tour bc it felt awkward going alone (as my Friends don't enjoy prog music overall). But i regret it so much, fuck It, i wanna go alone anyway. Would be my first time going to a show on my own and i cant wait honestly. Definitely will be 100% present in the moment

Not sure how things work over there but it's totally worth it to pay extra for good seats... Get some 3D glasses for it as well...

I watch other Reactors. One doesn't pause, then reacts after song (least fav.) One reactor pauses and reads lyrics out loud to analyze from philosophy veiw. One girl get all emotional listening to TOOL. One guy just freaks out every TOOL song.

This is a song that always makes me cry and I couldn´t even pinpoint why exactly.
I've been lucky enough to have a natural talent for time. Grew up in a musical family. Been playing different instruments my whole life. I don't have to count 🤷♂️ not sure why. I just know it. You can put a random piece of sheet music infront of me and I can play it. But you point at a note and ask me how long to hold it for I couldn't tell you. It's weird lol. I learnt it in private lessons and at school but then like forgot it but retained it at the sametime 🤣 Been listening to bands like Tool Karnivool, Opeth etc bands with odd meters since an early teen. I doubt you read all that but nice reactions dude I enjoy them. Keep counting you do you. Each to their own

For someone who tried to be a drummer but couldn't count I enjoy getting the count so can recognize the pattern Tool is operating from. I appreciate it very much. It's one of the reasons why I've enjoyed this channel for years.
At the same time, I don't think what's apparently a very small # of trolls should get Dave's attention or engagement at all. I feel like they got an exclusive 3 minute audience with Dave-taking that time away from me!
Like, maybe counting could be one of the disclaimers that's stated in the intro, along with, "Have I heard this before?" and the "Do me a favor..." re: Clicks, Likes, Buttons.

Funny cause Descending and Lateralus are my favorite songs from Tool if I had to pick a favorite, but it’s hard to pick a favorite Tool song. I love the last 3 minutes of the song!!! Double bass drums and great guitars!!! And great lyrics!!! Easily my favorite song from Fear Inoculum. Danny Carey went to Malibu to record the ocean sounds for this track. This was I believe the first song they finished for Fear Inoculum.

Love this tune. On a side note, you should check out Rick Rubin's Broken Record Podcasts he's been doing recently with John Frusciante. He's talking a lot about the music theory and a general deep dive into the intricacies of music that I think you'll find quite interesting.
people enjoy music in their own way. Tool is one of those bands that will please us all, however we want to soak it all in. Enjoy the Beatles, enjoy Led Zeppelin, enjoy Depeche Mode, enjoy Type O Negative, enjoy Pink Floyd, enjoy Pantera, enjoy Skynyrd & the Allman Brothers & I could go on & on & on with Journey....the Police, way more. That's because they made beautiful music. You do you....that's the beauty of it. Tool is a master class of creativity and passion. That's why they have passionate, dedicated fans. Never forget AIC....F**king bad-ass.

The only thing that would make this song better would be a strong vocal ending by Maynard. But I get it, they’re not in their Lateralus days anymore. This song could fit right in on that album if it weren’t for that, though.
