He's BY FAR my Favorite CONTEMPORARY Drummer! In another video of him performing "Who Are You," he mentions John Densmore of The Doors & his greatness! JD 's my Favorite Drummer of the 60's to PRESENT TIME!!! My 2 FAVORITE DRUMMERS EVER!!!
This is Dope AF! As it turns out I've known Stephen since I was a teenager in LA in the mid 80s. He is without a doubt one of the nicest guys you could ever meet and one the greatest drummers of all time which he does not get enough credit for. in a lot of the lists I see of best drummers of all time he is rarely on them which makes no sense. the other crime is that Jane's Addiction as yet have not been inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame which is just plain stupid. Every one of their shows I saw were epic.
100% agree. The drummers he influenced get more praise than he does. Like Danny Carey. Not gonna lie Danny Carey took what he learned to a god tier level but still foundations must be appreciated if you're a reasonable person. Stephen Perkins is without a doubt one of the all time greats and criminally overlooked as a rock trailblazer.
Stephen Perkins is such an iconic beatsmith. Without him Danny Carey and Tim Alexander would not exist in their present form. He molded and shaped the style and taste of many great drummers. Him and Mike Bordin for sure.
I went to a clinic of his as a teenager around ‘01, and got there early to be right up front and center, and he did the same thing, playing along to mountain song, and I’ll never forget how fortunate I felt being so close to his bass drum that I literally felt ever breath of air smacking my leg. He’s such a beast on the drums and prince of a person. He couldn’t have been more kind.
Wow heard this song for over 30 years and never really noticed he goes out on high hat transition a few measures before the actual change into the main riff, Brilliant and original
Insane live, right?!?! I sometimes long to go back in time, to their heyday, not to "be young again" (I turned 21 in 1990) but to plug my soul back into the places this music took me and Perkins' unabashedly pure joy creating those ethereal places.
I saw them in 91 at the first Lollapalooza . I feel like I didn't appreciate it as much as I would now, if that makes any sense. Youth is wasted on the young!
@@ssmith70s Same. I saw them 4 times between '91 - '94 and every time they killed but if I saw them then with the now me, it would've been... I dunno but I completely understand. And you're right, youth is wasted on the young.
I saw an unknown Jane’s open for Iggy (mid 80s?). Sounded like one long, slightly boring tribal jam. I wish I had understood what I was listening to. SP is a all-time Gr8
Yeah, I still regret messing that up. I had my phone, iPad, and a Nikon camera I was switching between. I think this video came from my iPad and didn’t remember to rotate it. Appreciate you checking it out, anyway, and Merry Christmas. -KlausFlouride1
That tribal undercurrent is a huge component of what made Jane’s such a unique rock sound. Perkins is a BEAST and plays possessed!!
Steve Perkins one of the top five drummers in rock
Such an original and tasteful drummer, everything changed in my music world from the 1st beat of the Triple X live album
EXACTLY!
I couldn't POSSIBLY AGREE MORE!!!

He's performing barefoot as usual! He's Hippie ALL The Way to The CORE!!!

Man oh man! So good! JA was a marvel and Mr Perkins kept the rhythm going! Great stuff!
