- Here's a drum cover of the Jane's Addiction track "Mountain Song". This is the first of many in a series of Roland/Toontrack V-Drum videos. My intention isn't to play an exact drum cover here, but rather to have a really fun time jamming along to one of my favorite Rock groups and Stephen Perkins has always been an inspiring drummer to me.

fucking awesome, dude!
Tony is there any way you can do a video on how to play this song on drums? Or if there is a drum tab anywhere for this song I can reference? I’m trying to learn it lol
Hey dude thanks so much for the kind words and questions!! To be completely honest, I played the song mostly by memory / ear as I've been a huge fan of Jane's Addiction and Stephen Perkins' playing for some time now not to mention, I've seen them a number of times live so I've had the privilege of seeing him play this song up close so many times. The one thing I can point about this song (in my own opinion) is probably the main drum groove in the verses which to me, has somewhat of an "egg shapped" feel to it. What I mean by that is it feels like an egg rolling down a hill or a mountain (no pun intended😉) throughout the song giving his groove a great deal of shape / dynamics which adds some nice percussive textures to the song. It's not quite as smooth rolling because of its shape. There are some ups and downs as it rolls so those are the motions / intentions around his groove which mainly consistent of the snare and toms starting on the snare to the first rack tom followed by the floor tom and then back to the first rack tom for one hit before ending the groove on the snare with two hits (the "and" and "a" of 4) before it repeats. This groove is mainly driven by the floor tom holding a pounding, consistent and tribal-like feel to it. You'll notice my right hand is almost always playing during this groove and just pulls back at the very end before those last two snare hits. My recommendation would be to get that main groove down first as it kind of stands on its own in the song. You'll notice Perkins follows the guitar / bass lines with the kicks in the choruses giving it a very punchy feel. I would also recommended looking up some videos of him playing this song at drum clinics and live for these examples up close. I had a lot of fun covering this song but he's the master of this groove and really no one quite plays it like him. Hope this helps and of course, if you decide to cover this song or anything else please let me know. I'd definitely check it out...Enjoy and rock out!! 🥁
Sick
Nice one mate :)
Hey dude! That rocked! Nice job. I'm always skeptical but was immediately won over. Question... I want a friend to cover that as well. Did you check copyright on it? (Hope that was not dumb question)
Hey David, sorry for the late reply and thanks for awesome comment!! If you and your friend post it UA-cam as a cover and don't post it elsewhere for monetary reasons, you should be fine. Hope this helps!!
Hi Tony! Thanks for the reply. And oh great! It turns out she does not like Jane's Addiction. So there went that cover. (Who ever heard of that!) JA rocks! Especially this album and this song. Oh well. Thanks again!
David Elghammer sounds good dude. Hit me up if you guys decide on a different cover. I'd love to check it out!!
We have agreed on Evanescence 'Bring me to Life". I will let you know when it comes out. We are also both huge Paramore fans. So I have that going for me. I met her because she covered "Hard Times". I think you might be able to guess who it is. Rock on!
neymar on drums..
