He is playing around and entertaining the audience but these older musicians are very conservative and professional especially during recordings. When teaching students they are dead serious.
A great creator of a timeless groove. This groove came into existence when Bernard was recording one day with Aretha and she dropped some music on the ground while Bernard was practicing this groove and apparently Aretha said yes! Yes! And, Bernard played this groove in a unique way on “ Until You Come Back to Me.” Amazing how this groove would be used later on songs like Home At Last with Steely Dan and countless others. This groove is ingenious. Enjoy!
Bernard Purdie just looks like he is having the time of his life every minute of playing, as it should be.

MrMcCoGo it’s not just counting rests. It’s remaining aware of the time grid underneath what you are doing consciously. His conscious action here was talking, his focus goes into that so that he can say what he means to say, but he is. still maintaining time underneath.
What a cool dude.I bet he’s forgotten more about drums than most drummers will ever know.
I've played for 30 years. I will very much accept that sting lol thank you, can I go sit back down and keep learning from Mr. Purdie, please?
I love how he explains his playing. it's perfect because if you write what hes doing on a staff, it doesn't look difficult. You'd spend the rest of your life trying to make it sound like him though. There's only one godfather of groove, and that's Bernard Purdie. Great video.
Purdie and the Groove are ONE ! Love watching him and all of his greatness..
How the hell is he ghosting a cross stick? Sorcery.
He's tapping the snare with his fingers. Very cool.
"Don't worry 'bout those ghost notes, they ain't nothing but rebound"
@@ryansams1268 first saw gavin harrison do that. Awesome technique
Fingers
I just realized what a terrible drummer I really am.
He does that.
firstmusic00 Me too, man.
You have to say hm pup ahh ehh ye eh and that will make your day*;^)
Alexander Logutov I'm pretty sure Benard is the only guy who can properly get away with this!
Don't feel like that.. we all just practice and try to get better... Think how old he is and how long he's been playing.
I had the true pleasure jamming with Bernard Prudie, Jason Ricci, Gino Mateo and the great Rob P at Harpfest San Diego hosted by Harmonica John Frazer!!
ted talks for drummers
hardly.... ted talks are shit
portholepirate 🤘🏽
Ba-ba unng AH! hoo hoo hoo GNN GNN gnn didi-boyboyboy uh EH GA!
This man speaks my language!
I sure hope the young folk in the crowd understand just how much of a monster Pretty is. As a bass player I would LOVE to sit with a human metronome like he is. And more than that, a dude that can flat groove his ass off.
He’s a master, not only at drumming, but also at explaining the logic behind what he does. Nothing short of genius!!!
You know what he's teaching? He's teaching groooooooovvvvvveeeeee....
LostMyMojo100 He can teach all he wants. What he possesses is something that comes from a higher power.
He is djent
And djent is his name
That so whomever speaks his name will be in the djent
And djent shall shine down on us
He's a happy musician. 🎵🎶
It's 2019 almost June... and there still is nobody, nobody like him around... may he live longer and still inspire and keep the beat.
Yeah and he's 80 years old now. I hope he lives over a hundred!
I love DJ Johnson from Khruangbin too. So minimal but groovy and always in the pocket.
This just makes me smile uncontrollably.
Me too! I’m not a drummer but always loved them.
Why did the algoruthm grace me with this? This is amazing.
Where's the mature content warning?
I am the mature content warning, if you see that I have been there, best assume it is riddled with inappropriate material.
His heart and soul he puts into the drums is just absolutely AMAZING and next level!!!!!
James Brown, B.B. King, Aretha... That's how you know you run with the big dogs.
Lets not forget Stealy Dan...….he set the stander for the Stealy Dan sound.
A Legend indeed!!
@@papo1515 who wrote that tired sea song?
I could listen to this man all day. Those drums just FEEL so damn good!
When that Latin groove kicked in...*chills!*
And those fill-ins! He's like a bank of genre rhythms on a synthesizer.
"Sex Education for Drumming 101"
It fits considering the fact that Bernard was in a porn movie once :)
Lol
Omfg yessss!
hahaha
😂😂😂😂👏👏👏
This footage is gold n can benefit any drummer. Awesome stuff being played. A Master.
I love this drumming, abit like free worship. Connecting your spirit and soul to the kit and expressing it.
The ways drummers brains work absolutely amazes me. And Bernard is at the very top of that awe i see in drummers.
I went to a clinic he was holding at a local drum shop 35 years ago, and still groovin .
He puts the fun in drumming. Great groove.
Makes it look so effortless. BP is a beast. Hail, Hail BP!
The sounds and rythm's are so wonderfully clean and pure...awesome.
The foundation of true relaxation is never forgetting where you started
How fortunate for a person to find that thing in life that they love at this level.
He is the living legend!! He is simply the best groove player ever.
That pocket is just filthy.
Basically. Lol
plenty of room in that their pocket💃✌
If you fall in that pocket, you ain't getting out.
I am not familiar with this term "pocket" what is it?
Courtney Johnson its where he keeps his roofies he drugs his set with before he abuses them
I love how non- chalant he is at the beginning of this exercise, but it’s funkier than most spend a lifetime chasing- AND HE’S CARRYING ON A CONVERSATION WITH AN AUDIENCE AT THE SAME TIME. My goodness!♥️ PS You can hear his influence all over Jeff Pocaro’s playing.
AMERICA'S world's wonder
Drummer , the true master of
Rythm drumming period !
And no one can touch this .
ONLY IN AMERICA ,AND IT
AIN'T EASY BEING COOL !!!!!
The Yoda of drumming.
That's some classic groovin' that is going down there with Mr. Bernard P. Hear him hum, like he is singin' with the beat... just pure awesomeness!!!👍🏻 thanks for sharing man.😊
I bet he's a real pain in the arse to recording engineers. "Ok Bernie, take number nine" "Ok boys.. here goes... a ha ha ha heuur heuur heur heur AAAhhhhhh yah yah boy boy ugh UGH UGH UGH!!!!" "CUT!!!!!!"
Matthew Oakley great one
LMAO I WAS THINKING THE SAME THING
I can picture (Bernard) him reading your comment, rocking back and forth and agreeing....
Matthew Oakley this comment just made my day hahaha
He is playing around and entertaining the audience but these older musicians are very conservative and professional especially during recordings. When teaching students they are dead serious.
The movements he does while performing “The Purdie Shuffle” is a straight GROOVE 😩❤️
Jamey Haddad is amazing. I watched this video for Purdie but I keep coming back to watch Jamey.
Enjoy!
Sad to know I'm just seeing this guy for the 1st time. Yet so happy I am too! Love the feel. I feel it
If you look up what he has played on, you'll find you've been listening to him all your life. I hope.
