I absolutely love this - Karen looks so uninhibited and real here. They didn't need to change for anyone - they didn't get successful on their image; all their success was due to the hard work they put into their recordings. And the quality of the recordings will keep them alive forever, unlike so many "artists", especially today, whose fame is all sensationalism and in no way based on any kind of talent.
Me Too!! Approaching 60.She put a smile on my face as a kid and she still does whether she sings or does comedy. My favorite by far! Still waiting to hear a voice like Karen's.She is a LEGEND!
Love this song. It has an upbeat style. In the karen Carpenter TV movie this is the song Karen (actress Cynthia Gibb) was singing in rehearsal on stage with a microphone in hand and away from her drums. Richard and Herb Alpert were watching from the balcony and decided then that Karen was a natural as a lead singer. It took a lot of persuasion to get Karen away from the safety of being behind her drums. That was the movie's version and that's why I looked up this video. Well done!
When I first heard "Close to you " the song, I was not too impressed. Then, one day while babysitting, decided to play some of the records at the house I was at, this couple had the Carpenters Album, from the moment I heard this wonderful ( too short) song " Love is Surrender" I was hooked, along with my very favorite song of all time by Karen and Richard - "Reason to Believe" .....the Carpenters were a part of my life. RIP Angel.... your incredible voice Karen will always be legendary, thank you...
Love Is Surrender Talk about love How it makes life complete You can talk all you want Make it sound good and sweet But the words have an empty ring And they don't really mean a thing Without love you are not to be found You are not to be found For love is surrender Love is surrender if you care Love is surrender if you dare Shout about love Then the wars will all end You can shout "we're all brothers", And eve pretend But you can't cover up the past Just pretending will never last Without love you are nothing at all You are nothing at all For love is surrender You must surrender if you care You must surrender if you dare For love is surrender You must surrender if you care You must surrender if you dare Da-a-a-re
If expanded with another verse (because it's a little too short), this would have made an excellent single. And of course, the duo could have used a few more uptempo numbers in their singles oeuvre. Both Karen and Richard taking lead on a song...a rarity indeed. Great footage of Karen right where she belongs: at her drum set. And she looks as cute and adorable as ever.
It's been years since I last saw this...It's from the same filming session as the original Close To You vid. Reason To Believe was a single to have been released and maybe this track was one of them, too. Thanks for sharing.
Love the little organ riff on this song. One of the better songs on the Close to You album. I am sure Frank Pooler and the Long Beach State choir influence was a driving force behind this, much like Crescent Noon. Karen is just a priceless gem.
@falldownhard That's the best thing about music from that time, if you took away the image you had talent. Too many wannabe celebrities are based on their looks and about 5% of talent, which makes me wonder how they became famous like Megan Fox for example, how did she become an actress? She's not that much of one and her looks is fake. Carpenters are proof that it was about talent, and they they an enormous amount of it.
He must have thought the line needed an exclamation point...it does sound like he's getting hit in the stomach with a fastball. Who knows, maybe it inspired Prince's coughing spell in "Raspberry Beret."

Like most every other of their songs and those of great musicians, it evolved into Karen singing the entire lead during live performances And yes she looks so beautiful healthy and happy here This video was probably done in late 1970 or 1971 And to the guy who said they must be lip syncing.. Never will be another Karen a class act

Originally from a very popular Christian cantata at the time called, "Tell It Like It Is".
Que perda irreparável!, tão jovem. A voz de um anjo! Obrigada Karen por sua obra atemporal!
Mil gracias a todos los que suben estos videos de Carpenters, los he disfrutado enteramente y me gusta verlos una y otra vez. Bendiciones.
Love Is Surrender
Talk about love
How it makes life complete
You can talk all you want
Make it sound good and sweet
But the words have an empty ring
And they don't really mean a thing
Without love you are not to be found
You are not to be found
For love is surrender
Love is surrender if you care
Love is surrender if you dare
Shout about love
Then the wars will all end
You can shout "we're all brothers",
And eve pretend
But you can't cover up the past
Just pretending will never last
Without love you are nothing at all
You are nothing at all
For love is surrender
You must surrender if you care
You must surrender if you dare
For love is surrender
You must surrender if you care
You must surrender if you dare
Da-a-a-re
my love... Karen Carpenter
karen Carpenter!!

Karen had a beautiful voice.❤
Perfection.
YOU HAVE BEEN FOUND HAVING MERCY WITHOUT LOVE, AND BECAUSE YOU HAVE SHOWN ME THIS MERCY, I SHALL SHOW YOU THE LOVE WHICH SHALL HAVE YOU FOUND. Chris

Nice song!

It is easy to forget just how visually striking Karen was.
@@waynebrasler Uh, for you maybe. Not for the rest of us.

Then there were artists like Christopher Cross who came to prominence right during the MTV era and with a face for radio his career never recovered.
30 years ago today.
cute song
I had a crush on Doug strawn ❤ love this song
great , up tempo tune !!!
Karen looking young and very cute. Doug and Danny must have taken their happy pills that day...LOL...joking....
Who is the one saying "TUUUHHHHH!" at ~1:18?! Was that Richard?! hahahahaha!!! XD
He must have thought the line needed an exclamation point...it does sound like he's getting hit in the stomach with a fastball. Who knows, maybe it inspired Prince's coughing spell in "Raspberry Beret."
rkmugen yes, it was Richard.
Noooo, that was Chuck Norris
Hahaha, actually it was Bob Messenger. His 1 contribution to vocals on a Track!
@@bruschmidt9943: He also sang a few lines on a Christmas TV program.
I like this song but am grateful she found her contralto voice.
♥️

I nastąpią dni chwały.
Jednak muszę powiedzieć ci,
Musisz po stronie prawdy być.
Jeśli nie, wszystko na nic i tak
Na nic i tak...
Bo Bóg jest miłością.

Musisz się poddać mocy tej.
Bóg jest miłością.
Musisz się poddać mocy tej.
Musisz się poddać mocy tej.
This song would have to be the only Carpenters song that I know of in which Richard Carpenter sang a solo bit.
There were several, especially from the first five albums. There are some with Richard singing the entire lead.
Look up their songs 1966-69. U will be pleased with your findings. Actually, their early albums were brilliant!😌👍
Like most every other of their songs and those of great musicians, it evolved into Karen singing the entire lead during live performances
And yes she looks so beautiful healthy and happy here

What a brilliant observation... it’s a video
You know those things that eventually MTV claimed to have started 20 years larere
Richard sang solo lead on “I Kept On Loving You” , the B side single to “Close to You”
I'm pretty sure they are lipsynching here.
You must surrender to GOD!
dirgesinthedark7 that's what the lyrics of this song really mean.
