Great vid, as usual :) Your list is right on, ASSUMING players already own a Sol Ring, Arcane Signet and Command Tower... and also assuming they cannot afford / will not purchase: Gilded Drake, Wheel of Fortune, Mox Diamond, Gaea's Cradle, etc... which is pretty much 90% of us ;)
We would have loved to include those, but steered clear of RL for this video. That said, yes Cradle is a staple for that strategy, but we can't recommend someone go out and spend that money if they don't have it.

Good advice here. If you can afford them, they're costly because they're so good. Immediate power level upgrades incoming. As for me, I was able to acquire a handful of these even cheaper by getting them in foreign languages (since they're so common, players often know the card already) or getting them in heavily played or damaged condition. Rhystic study, Sylvan Library and Mana Crypt especially were like Liquid Schwartz for my decks!

I have 4 Crypts, 4 Jeweled Lotus', 4 Mana Vaults, 4 Chrome Moxes and 15 Commander decks that are sleeved in only 5 colors - similar color combinations get the same color sleeves so I can easily swap expensive staples in for proxies without resleeving. Saved me so much money.
Perfect commander for Vampiric; Vilis. You lose the 2 life and draw two cards after the chosen card has been place on top. So you get your card and another random card.
I feel like this list is more for Cedh and high power playgroups rather than newcomer edh players. These cards are the pinnacle of mana curve refinement when you absolutely need to have as many answers as possible with the lowest curve possible. Don't get me wrong, these are amazing cards and great in high power decks that want them, but not necessarily great for upgrading precons if that is where you are at in your magic journey. I'm fortunate enough to have played for many years and have all of these cards in multiples, but I'm not going to put them in a deck I know I would be playing at a lower power/beginner table. Some better examples might have been- counter spell Beast masters ascension Fellwar Stone Signets and talisman's Pyroblast Veil of summer Craterhoof behemoth Seedborne Muse Sign in blood Noxious revival Eladamri's call Grim tutor Archeomancer's map To name but a few. Edh rec doesn't differentiate between edh and cedh as far as the rankings go, nor does it consider power level. I would always suggest to new players that they look to broaden their collections 1st before dropping $1000 dollars on the 15 most powerful cards, some of which are incredibly situational. I would also suggest the look at the meta in their lgs/playgroup, see what is commonly played and take that into consideration. But keep up the great work. It's not often I'm not totally on board with your ideas. ♥️
@@TubbyBubbleLove42 nah i just mean that i feel you can get away with not running the others but if youre in blue youd be stupid to not have these. Im a green player BTW i have 3 mono green decks and the only blue decks i have are simic or sultai so the blue is only there to help the green. XD
Woodland bellower has become a bomb. I have 10 targets it can hit in my rograhk and thrasios cedh. I think of woodland bellower kinda like a baral’s expertise but instead of a free card from my hand it’s a free card from my deck. All 10 of the cards I can hit with woodland bellower are gas. Lonis, kinnan, e witness, Meria, jaheria, and 5 more gas boys straight from my deck to the field. Woodland bellower also dodges most current cedh meta counterspells and puts the green combo piece or value engine directly into play
Dockside needs a reprint...... Badly... U can only get them from Sevinne's EDH preconstruct which are now rare on shelves and in Wal Marts mystery commander cubes
Do not own any of these and still win a lot.... I am all about surprise cards xD Those cards are good tho, but more into the cEDH realm. For casual the best thing to improve first and invest is the lands and mana base in general.
A $4 Smothering Tithe (FOIL). When are we gonna see that again. I bought all available Brawl Commander deck in Walmart and Target for $15 a deck. And some LGS stores had it on sale for $9.
and that's the best point anyone can make - these cards aren't necessary to fun play at all. they just represent some of the most powerful effects that can be achieved in the format.
Ahhh yes. 15 Commander staples every player should dump their wallet on. The importance of financial literacy lmao 😂 (For real tho I like the video 👍🏻)
Makes sense to target whoever's in the lead. Not necessarily who has the most expensive cards but the two aren't mutually exclusive and if you have the crypt out you're probably in the lead, depending on when you drop it.
@@diggerdog9205 the person who brought deck which has Mana Crypt to casual table will not just play Crypt, you will see all sort of fetch dual land, Mana Vault, Ancient Tomb, Sylvan Library, wheel etc. I don’t like people who spend big money just to ramp ahead of everyone, and they way they play just plain boring and lazy, basically just ramp ramp ramp and find combo piece to finish the game. This kind of solitaire player need to be the first one to eliminate.
I don't target anyone except for if they are in the lead. In my weekly group we play for packs so it's pretty competitive. We don't allow proxies and we follow mulligan rules. We are all friends so there is no bad blood.
If you want to target someone for playing good cards that's totally up to you. I just don't understand how you will beat them.. I'm always trying to team up with ppl before anything else.
I feel like this is more of a 15 cards to add in your CEDH rather than just "normal" EDH decks tbh. For example, I would argue Mana Crypt is worse in normal games because it would normally brag out to 10-15 turns and those life losses would add up eventually. Meanwhile, in CEDH the card is a powerhouse as games tend to end before the life losses even matter.
Valid points, you should check out our staples series that we just started. We talk about more foundational cards that aren't super high-power, because you are right. Mana crypt does get worse in casual games, despite being a card that cheats out big stuff quickly
i disagree with a few of the choices on this list, i don't even see a casual player even using half these cards. in my opinion, The Great Hendge is a "casual" card, but really great in "slow mythological" decks that runs something like Ghalta as the commander.
Believe it or not, I don't think so. Hullbreacher was just casually oppressive without effort; the value of a Dockside incredibly goes down at casual tables where fast mana rocks don't get dumped into play with abandon. It's still a big mana boost, but it isn't insane. Played straight up in a casual EDH game, it's just fine.
15 cards to homogenize your deck building and make your deck into boring value piles. Instead of encouraging new players to play blatantly strong cards, I'd encourage new players to make decks with cards they like.
I have to disagree with this list because a huge number of the cards are just extremely expensive and can force your group to escalate or jump into cEDH.
My suggestion is this--talk with your group, seriously, about allowing proxies of cards you already own. Almost any group will go for that; very few will go "open season" on proxies, but the consideration that moving cards between decks is a hassle is usually enough to win them over. Then, pick up powerful cards one by one. Pick up or make some proxies of each as you get them. Then you can amortize the cost, you didn't buy ONE card, you bought "infinite" copies of a card! It's like an unlock code for the game. It's how it works on MTGO, if you also want to use that argument to sway your friends.
I just think that cedh is ruining the spirit of edh and ppl cannot self govern their decks to stay edh instead of high powered or degenerate; thats the issue. To say these “should” be in your deck or collection is really a loaded term. Why should ppl play cards that aren’t healthy for the format, price players out the game, make for feel bad games, and the list goes on.
I very much disagree here. CEDH isn’t “ruining the spirit of edh” because it is part of the spirit of edh. EDH is the place where you do that degenerate stuff, you play cards you cant play anywhere else. They’re simply different ways of playing the game, nobody is forcing you to play these cards, nobody is forcing you to play cedh. Play the game the way you want to play. CEDH on the whole is very proxy friendly, so “pricing your opponents out” is much less of a thing there. There is no such thing as “staying edh” because cedh *is* edh.
@@possiblypigeon cedh is what happened when modern players came to edh and didnt like how slow it was, or its ppl that are too competitive for edh and want to make it a format it wasn’t intended to be. Edh isnt about playing cards that are banned in other formats; its a one of format meant to be less consistent and have more and longer interaction. My main issue is players who want to have fun, cant afford expensive cards, want jank combos, like to play budget, want to use unique commanders, want to use bulk to build decks, and so on, cannot show up for a normal pod and play since the base power of most deck is now an 8 or borderline cedh. That’s not right and especially not to new players; ppl want a fun game and normal pod of 5-7 (precon to optimized strategies). Also not everyone agrees with proxies and especially not everyone agrees ppl should be able to proxy a $5k deck amd invest nothing in real cards in order to win and make others have a feel bad game. That’s not the spirit of edh; if you like cedh thats fine, but dont force it on the format of edh or expect others to pod with you. I would definitely blame someone for bringing only high powered decks vs someone who has casual deck and no 8s and up; to expect ppl to want to play into that is bs.
@@returnoftheduelist9790 Nobody is “expected” to play edh in any way. Believe me, i play both sides of the format. The default deck isn’t an 8, it just may feel that way. Decks aren’t, by default, “borderline cedh” - it isn’t even close. The normal pod is casual, always has been and always will be. I believe your perception of things have just changed slightly. New players, and there are many currently, are allowed to play the game anyway they want - this hasn’t changed. I’m a relatively new magic player, started playing in 2020 and have only played edh. I’m not a modern player, i’m just someone that likes to combo sometimes. There is a very very very small minority of people who want to stomp people at a casual table, there’s nothing you can do about them unfortunately. You can still play budget, can still put as many restrictions as you want on regular play as you want. There is literally nothing stopping you from doing this.
@@possiblypigeon i too only play edh and since last year, i came from yugioh and i know broken when i see it lol. Just when mana crypt is in a normal pod along side mana vault and cards clearly for strong decks, then it’s definitely being power crept above an average pod. I co created a budget format called Warlord where its any commander but $100 restriction on the 99 besides basic lands. But this also showed optimized and fun decks can be made without those fast mana, free negate, or the worst...drannith magistrate like cards that make ppl feel bad. I have 2 decks id say are a 9, 1 deck at an 8 and then like 4 solid $100 budget decks. I have more fun and the pods are better when we play Warlord; when i see cedh players at a $100 table then i have a big issue with that and this is what goes on by me.
If youre just getting into the game, do not fucking spend 1500$ on these staples. Get some signets and other land ramp for your colors before this lmao
Totally fair if you're not interestedin playing these, but they are representatives of a group of the most powerful cards in the format, whether you want to be contrarian about it or not. I’m waiting so I can pickup all these replaceable staples you’re referring to! Got my cardkingdom cart ready to go! If you wanna post links to the cards that’d be helpful for a newb like me!
The most pretentious video I have ever seen. A video called 15 commander cards everyone should own is going to get a lot of new players searching this up and thinking they need to spend this money on their decks is insanity. I have playsets of all of these cards and rarely play most of them (except for rhystic study)
You give UA-cam's algorithm too much credit; this will do terribly in our search rankings. These cards are essentially "15 good stocks to invest in that aren't memes." Maybe that clears things up. NFA

So...is it good or is it bad that I have all these cards already. Bare minimum seems like I'm on the same page as y'all!
Staples! Commanders signet, and sol ring *hides face*
ring is just so ubiquitous at this point
Great vid, as usual :) Your list is right on, ASSUMING players already own a Sol Ring, Arcane Signet and Command Tower... and also assuming they cannot afford / will not purchase: Gilded Drake, Wheel of Fortune, Mox Diamond, Gaea's Cradle, etc... which is pretty much 90% of us ;)
We would have loved to include those, but steered clear of RL for this video. That said, yes Cradle is a staple for that strategy, but we can't recommend someone go out and spend that money if they don't have it.
@@JakeandJoelareMagic Thanks for the answer . What's your thought on Jeweled Lotus? Did it came close to make the list ? I'm asking because I'm still ambivalent about it when building a new deck...
I happen to own all of These minus mox diamond , and I can tell you, i will always cut gilded drake from any non-blink deck. Stay far away, its Not worth it. Greetings from germany
My first Patreon subscription! I actually created an account just to subscribe. The content is honed to perfection! Join their Patreon and never be sorry you did 🤘
Thanks, Keto ❤
I have 4 Crypts, 4 Jeweled Lotus', 4 Mana Vaults, 4 Chrome Moxes and 15 Commander decks that are sleeved in only 5 colors - similar color combinations get the same color sleeves so I can easily swap expensive staples in for proxies without resleeving.
Saved me so much money.
If you have 4 crypts you didnt “save money” lmao
Excellent content!
Glad you think so!
Well this video didn’t age well
Cyclonic Rift is one I'd love to get.
They used the Terse Nielson art of rhystic study in Jumpstart which was pretty recent
I actually expected Opposition agent force of will and toxic deluge here over finale, henge and deflecting swat
The great henge is extremely powerful 💪
Some better examples might have been- counter spell
Beast masters ascension
Fellwar Stone
Signets and talisman's
Pyroblast
Veil of summer
Craterhoof behemoth
Seedborne Muse
Sign in blood
Noxious revival
Eladamri's call
Grim tutor
Archeomancer's map
To name but a few.
finale of devastation was a card I remember getting and at the time it was a $7 dollar card.
Only agree with cyclonic rift and rhystic study.
Blue player much?
@@TubbyBubbleLove42 nah i just mean that i feel you can get away with not running the others but if youre in blue youd be stupid to not have these. Im a green player BTW i have 3 mono green decks and the only blue decks i have are simic or sultai so the blue is only there to help the green. XD
Dont forget hullbreacher 😁
Jake has that merfolk hair today
Great Video 👍
Nice list, these are all the cards that instantly trigger "YOU GOING DOWN BUDDY" in me. No offence to the players who enjoy them.
Do not own any of these and still win a lot.... I am all about surprise cards xD
Those cards are good tho, but more into the cEDH realm. For casual the best thing to improve first and invest is the lands and mana base in general.
I was betting on the signets to be featured here, barely 2 mins in Mana crypt was mentioned and I gave up on guessing the other 14.
I didn't know there was a reserved list for the art.
A $4 Smothering Tithe (FOIL). When are we gonna see that again. I bought all available Brawl Commander deck in Walmart and Target for $15 a deck. And some LGS stores had it on sale for $9.
Ayy congrats on 17k guys!
Thank you!!
I have only 3 from 15 ^^
I have play magic for a long time and i have almost no card in this list. This cards are obligatory in cedh for sure
and that's the best point anyone can make - these cards aren't necessary to fun play at all. they just represent some of the most powerful effects that can be achieved in the format.
@@JakeandJoelareMagic agree
This video showed up after picking up the Kalamax and Otrimi precons at $40 each and they were still a value. 😂
Idk if I'd start off with these cards at all. Personally. I'd pick a color or deck first
definitely. these don't really provide a starting place as much as a list of absolute heat to dip into if they match your colors
I Approve of this List 👍
sucks that the AUD is so weak atm.. all these cards are worth so much down under :(
Rhystic study is still on the list being printed in that art
oh interesting, I didn't know that! Thanks for that note
Ahhh yes. 15 Commander staples every player should dump their wallet on. The importance of financial literacy lmao 😂
(For real tho I like the video 👍🏻)
Mana Crypt is not necessary unless you are playing CEDH, I saw anyone play this, that’s the player that become my target to eliminate.
You then become his target. And he has a mana crypt.
Lol. All in on the Potence.
yes
Luka Doncic and Dax Shepherd discuss M:tG
This video is so wrong in many ways. New players do not need to waste their money on those cards there are cheaper staples. Begin with those...
Wouldn't buy these expensive cards for my casual gaming that i sometimes do. This feels like a video for beginners who wants to go pro straight away 😅
Should i buy a fun card or a fun precon😅
i disagree with a few of the choices on this list, i don't even see a casual player even using half these cards. in my opinion, The Great Hendge is a "casual" card, but really great in "slow mythological" decks that runs something like Ghalta as the commander.
Where da hell did tef's prot go ? 😂
I just sold Mana Crypt. Have no idea why you “need” it.
Cards you “need” line up well with the most expensive cards in the format. 🤔
Only missing dockside extortionist and enlightened tutor from this list
Card 2 is dockside
@@guillermoromero8041 they mean they own all the cards except for those 2
These cards suck. Where is Island?
next video we're covering Top 6 Basic Lands in MTG
@@JakeandJoelareMagic Spoiler: top 2 are Island and Snow-Covered Island.
Zur's Weirding and tefari's puzzle box are the only 2 cards that should always be played.
Lol 😆
You must carry a shovel around for all the salt that hits the table when you play Teferi's Puzzle Box.
This list isn't must haves whenever they are so expensive. Give a list of under $5 cards
imho, the great hedge was a mistake. who at wotc thought it was a good idea to have a green card to practically everything
I own two of these...
As if blue didnt have 100ds of draw cards to choose from, we dont need an irritating card like rhystic study :).
Dockside _will_ get the banhammer this year !!
Casual edh...what's that?
Ya, people should really not be playing sol ring, mana crypt or ristic study, because they give you dockside treasure.
Welp glad i have all these hahahah
Own them all but necropotence
nice!
Get your life together lol
15 cards to homogenize your deck building and make your deck into boring value piles. Instead of encouraging new players to play blatantly strong cards, I'd encourage new players to make decks with cards they like.
I have to disagree with this list because a huge number of the cards are just extremely expensive and can force your group to escalate or jump into cEDH.
"hey do ya'll wanna play powerful decks or more casual decks for this next game?"
Turn 2? What is this, amateur hour? Lotus petal, Ring, Vault, Crypt, Cascading Cataracts ... "Easy" 6 cost cast!
Not trying to be rude, but as an experienced player the only thing I've to say to this is "No shit Sherlock" ._.
I have more fun and the pods are better when we play Warlord; when i see cedh players at a $100 table then i have a big issue with that and this is what goes on by me.
so buy allt the most powerfull expensive cards under 100€ got it
If youre just getting into the game, do not fucking spend 1500$ on these staples. Get some signets and other land ramp for your colors before this lmao
There goes my wallet.
It is crazy how many new cards are broken . # power creep . Also algorithm
yeah, it was crazy as we went through the list and just kept having cards of the last three years pop up
Yuck lol these are all exceptionally replaceable “staples” and really just a list of cards of don’t care to ever spend money on
Totally fair if you're not interestedin playing these, but they are representatives of a group of the most powerful cards in the format, whether you want to be contrarian about it or not.
Could you tell me which card you'd replace Dockside Extortionist with that would give you a similar enough effect to make DE "exceptionally replaceable"?
Damn you reposted your comment bruv, no one asked
I’m waiting so I can pickup all these replaceable staples you’re referring to! Got my cardkingdom cart ready to go!
If you wanna post links to the cards that’d be helpful for a newb like me!
I agree. These clowns are just shills for Papa Hasbro. All they do is try to FOMO everyone into buying everything.
NFA
Speaking of pretentious mister “I have playsets”
Did you really call someone pretentious then proceed to humblebrag?
@@MustangMike52 that’s exactly what they did
Pot meet kettle.
