There should be a picture of Don Warren next to the Redskins logo in any sports dictionary. That guy was the unsung blood and guts of their greatest teams. A Redskin through and through. Most football fans do not remember him, but we do. He threw a superb, bone jarring pulling block on that first scoring drive (7:01). For all you prospective football players, get a good look at those fundamentals.
Redskin TEs were probably the most underrated part of their teams. Doc Walker, Don Warren and Clint Diddier were all BIG TIME players. Making killer blocks and catching critical passes and touchdowns. In the 1 back offense, no way the Redskins would've been as successful if the TEs were bumbs. They were indeed the backbone of the offense.
I remember watching this game when I was a kid. Huge Washington fan. I was so nervous. Eric Dickerson was such a beast. Over 1,800 yards. He just looked unstoppable. That's FACTS right there! The reason for that was simple. The Redskins had great "groups", meaning while they had good individual talent, the Redskins didn't have a "generational" player like a Jerry Rice, L.T., Eric Dickerson etc....the "team" itself played the Gibbs and Pettibon schemes to perfection and won many games just making timely adjustments, and playing sound fundamental football when it counted, especially when the games got bigger during the season. Announcers today stink except Aikman and Romo and I say this as a lifetime die hard Redskins fan always!
This was ED's last full year with the Rams. They got a King's ransom in draft picks with the three-way trade they made with Indy and Buffalo the next year (much like when Dallas traded Herschel to the Vikes) but unlike the Cowboys did not evaluate college talent very well. They made the playoffs in '88 and the NFC Championship game the next year but that was it. Dickerson's Rams replacement, Charles White, led the NFL in rushing in the strike year of 1987.
That’s right, he bought. Tractor with that playoff money. I never forgot him. He was the missing piece in that Oline. The Right side was always weak before Thielmann was acquired in a trade for Down Town Charlie Brown. RC was a pro bowler in Atlanta. I was happy to see him arrive.

@@davidsekowski1710 That rain game was the Falcons dude! Washington wins 24-7! Jerry and Deon and Mc Hammer as a fan/performer with the Falcons. The Gibbs quote saying he did not want the rain as it would slow the passing game. Well the announcers said what are the Falcons going to do? Falcons had little running game compared to the 3 good RB's the Skins had with Byner Riggs and Ervins. They threw all those seat warmers all over the field and stadium too. I have both playoff games on VHS and the season opener against the Lions too. We beat the Lions twice 45-0 in the season opener and 41-10 in the NFC championship game!
Nice to see the start of the pre posse with Sanders getting some playing time here! He should have played in the NFC championship game more! Sanders with number 46.
Hard defensive game. Rams don't have to blush in shame, but the Skins played a better game. Plus six turnovers for the Rams, a bad pass interference call on Irvin early in the game, can't expect to win. Great showing for rookie QB Jim Everett for his first playoff game: he showed he belonged to the NFL, and the future will prove he was a great quarterback.
Gary Clutch Clark I remember that game. one key play was the Redskins recovering a fumble for a touchdown...except the refs didn't initially see the Redskins player with the ball and continue to sort through the pile to find the ball.
Gary Clutch Clark Still pissed off that my dad took my brother and not me...that said, I remember Herzog’s call of the FG miss (“The snap is good, the hold is good, the kick is...NO GOOD!!!”) as if I just got out of the car.

Remember yelling at the TV throughout the whole game. It would've taken a monumental effort to beat the Skins at RFK in a playoff game, so was eternally PO'd at Eric DIckerson. Granted, he carried the team on his back for the season and eased the burden for a rookie starting QB, Jim Everett. But to fumble three times was just too much for me to stomach. I wasn't sad when they traded ED the next year and decided to build around Everett. ED was a superstar but the Rams ceiling and potential were greater by building around Everett ... which would've been the case if they'd only capitalized on the extra draft picks from trading ED and NOT drafted such pedestrian players.
Have really enjoyed getting reacquainted with the 86 version of the Skins , interesting that when this team made it to the championship game there was little doubt that Schrader was going to develop into the franchise QB and that Rogers had the fullback position well in hand
I don't blame Robinson and some of the Rams being totally disgusted with the Officiating, Redskins always got the calls at home in the 80's playoff games.
Where is giants vs redskins nfc championship game. I am a big redskins fan I know seeing that game is going to hurt but its one of the classic games and land the pre game show was okay too. If anybody has this game please show it.

They would've been so dominate I believe that they would've stayed in Los Angeles not moving to St Louis and probably Jimmy Johnson Dallas Cowboys of the 1990s or Brett Farve and his Packers would be the Rams biggest threats in the NFC
If there was any drawback to Dickerson was his penchant for fumbling the ball. He led the league in loss fumbles that seasons and fumbled three times in this game.
at 2:17:35 not true. The Rams won a very cold playoff game in Dallas in 1983 and even the game in 1979 was not very warm. I guess Dallas is not a "cold weather city".

Following week the 'Skins beat the Bears IN CHICAGO, 27-13, in what became known as the "Grapefruit" game.. (Ditka regrettably called Dexter Manley as dumb as a Grapefruit, in the week leading up to the game..) Needless to say, Dexter Manley was on a mission and singlehandedly destroyed the Chicago game plan.. The 'Skins got shutout 17-0 by the Giants, the following week in the Meadowlands with the Giants and their D.C. Bill Bellichick, seemingly knowing EVERY play the Redskins were going to run..
Stats Rogers Thanks for refreshing my memory. Beat the Bears then lost to the Giants. Very windy game in the Meadowlands and uncharacteristically, Gary Clark dripped a wide open TD. Interesting point about Belichick “seemingly” knowing every play.

I don't know if it was this game or another game between the Rams and Redskins in the previous few years before this game. But Dexter Manley told Eric Dickerson that the Redskins defense had a bounty out on him. I believe you can find this on A Football Life: Dexter Manley. Or perhaps you already watched it.
49:06. Absolute bull shit. Hill's knee was clearly down before the ball came out. In any case, there was certainly not conclusive visual evidence to overturn the call on the field. The replay official must have been drunk.
Sure, that's why it took the replay official five (5) minutes to overturn the call on the field. Hill's knee was on the ground before the ball moved. There was no conclusive, indisputable evidence proving otherwise and, by rule, the call on the field should have stood. I'm all for instant replay, but the replay official blew this one.
That is the human element of the game, +Los Angeles Rams. I know this was a playoff game, but still no one is perfect. If we were, we'd all be robotic.

ty for sharing sir
I remember Green chasing down Dickerson. Nobody ever did that before
Darrell Green fast af
Green won the NFL fastest man contest 4 times too if I recall right! I know he won atleast 3 maybe 4 contests! Also he joked that eating tootsie rolls during games made him run fast! FYI he really did keep tootsie rolls in his socks! He said this during an interview back in the 80's or early 90's. I miss the days of Madden bringing up interesting stuff like this too! Announcers today stink except Aikman and Romo and I say this as a lifetime die hard Redskins fan always!
I can't believe Eric Dickerson endured this beating for so long.
He beat out ED but ED played 3 less games. The Rams also got Greg Bell in that deal and he was a monster in 88-89.
R.C. Thielemann is the forgotten Hog. Sort of Joe Besser as the third stooge in the Three Stooges. He got a John Deere tractor, though!
That’s right, he bought. Tractor with that playoff money. I never forgot him. He was the missing piece in that Oline. The Right side was always weak before Thielmann was acquired in a trade for Down Town Charlie Brown. RC was a pro bowler in Atlanta. I was happy to see him arrive.
thanks for sharing ( weeks till we start again
Summeral and Madden memorable commentators
And both of them doing games for God.
Amazing how George Rogers went about 230 lbs @ 6' 2" - very nearly the same size & weight as John Riggins - but ol' Riggo just 'looked' so much bigger ..
If I were a Rams fan watching this game after the loss, I'd of said "well at least we didn't lose by 45 or so again"..like they did against the Redskins in the '83 playoffs..
Rams played a tough game in this one as in 83 they were destroyed 51-7! Darrell Green played a monster game in both games! Riggins in 83! George Rogers in 86!
Cat Jordan yes 51-7 in the 83 playoff game! So 44 pt win for Skins. 3 years later Rams only lose 19-7. Love these 80's classic games reg season or playoffs does NOT matter! The good ole days!
1974) Rams 19- Redskins 10
1983) Redskins 51- Rams 7
1986) Redskins 19- Rams 7
That 83 Skins team embarrased everybody.
@@danielkelegian5306 Pretty sure they didn't embarrass the Raiders in the Super Bowl that year..quite the opposite, actually..got straight up slaughtered. And that was after barely getting by the 49ers to even MAKE it there..
That open field sprint by Dickerson sums up that game... 9 times out of 10, that’s 6. Not that day.

I remember those good old days. Games at RFK where the stadium used to literally shake. Anyone has the 91 NFC championship games vs the Lions? I would great appreciate it if you could post it and let me know.
thomas griffin man I loved that game
It was pouring rain and those bleachers looked like they were going to snap in half with all the jumping going on. They put the brakes on Barry all afternoon. I remember
Wilbur Marshall playing great that year. My mom took my best friend and I to the store on Super Bowl Sunday afternoon and let us pick out all the snacks and soda we ever wanted for the big game.
These old games flood me with nostalgic memories.
These are my Beatles records!!
Lol 😂
Thanks!
Nice to see the start of the pre posse with Sanders getting some playing time here! He should have played in the NFC championship game more! Sanders with number 46.
So cool to see you in the game posts Gary!
Thank You Richard !
I miss Summerall and Madden.
The players were excited to get $6,000 extra for this game. The players now make more than that per play.
+pretorious700 Today,s NFL sucks! That,s why I only watch these great memories.

This was a rough day for a 12 year old Rams fan 💙💛
Would like to see the 91 game vs. Houston. An RFK classic.
Gary Clutch Clark I remember that game. one key play was the Redskins recovering a fumble for a touchdown...except the refs didn't initially see the Redskins player with the ball and continue to sort through the pile to find the ball.
Yep. I was there!
Gary Clutch Clark Still pissed off that my dad took my brother and not me...that said, I remember Herzog’s call of the FG miss (“The snap is good, the hold is good, the kick is...NO GOOD!!!”) as if I just got out of the car.
@@JerseyNYC83 Are you sure that was the Houston game? I know Alvin Mays if that is his 1st name recovered a fumble in the EZ against the Cowboys from Aikman or E SMITH I think they both fumbled consecutively and then Alvin was standing at midfield and the refs had no clue he had the ball with the pileup in the EZ. I have that game with the Cowboys on VHS! Wash wins 20-17 in RFK if I recall right? It was a really good game vs Cowboys!
very nice one! thanks!!
The Rams received 2 butt whippings against the Redskins in the playoffs during the 80's.
Jason Reome Washington was better than the Rams. On another level
@@RobertJohnson-mn3br rams got beat by 2 of the greatest teams in nfl history in the nfc championship games 1985 bears and 1989 49ers. rams were very good thru the 80s, just couldnt beat two off the all time great teams
Tony Rex they were good, sure. Though Jim Everett was descent they could’ve used a better QB. Might have pushed them over the hump
@@tonyrex6439 whoa the 1983 Washington Redskins they won Super Bowl 17 were are a great team with their plus their offense scored a then NFL record 581 points destroyed the los Angeles 51-7 in the divisional playoff 24-21 victory over San Francisco 49ers in the NFC Championship Game
@@RobertJohnson-mn3br In my opinion if Eric Dickerson isn't traded to Indianapolis in the strike shortened 1987 season they'd never move to st Louis plus being a contender along with Dallas & Green Bay in the 90s

I forgot how bad Dickerson was at holding onto the 🏈. 3 fumbles =loss every single time
Have really enjoyed getting reacquainted with the 86 version of the Skins , interesting that when this team made it to the championship game there was little doubt that Schrader was going to develop into the franchise QB and that Rogers had the fullback position well in hand
Norv Turner was a Rams assistant at that time!
One of the reasons why the NFL fans hated about the instant replays lasted too long.
Darrell Green used to catch everybody. I bet Dickerson thought he had a touchdown. Hahaha!!
He said in interviews that he knew Green would catch him if Green was still on his feet.
CBS had cool graphics in the late 80s.
What a long replay review after Hill's fumble in the second quarter. Yikes.
As great as Eric Dickerson was he fumbled way too much
So did Walter Payton, Tony Dorsett and Franco Harris.

I remember that game.
They would've been so dominate I believe that they would've stayed in Los Angeles not moving to St Louis and probably Jimmy Johnson Dallas Cowboys of the 1990s or Brett Farve and his Packers would be the Rams biggest threats in the NFC
You forget the Rams were trash in the years before moving to St. Louis.
If there was any drawback to Dickerson was his penchant for fumbling the ball. He led the league in loss fumbles that seasons and fumbled three times in this game.
JerseyNYC83 Yeah that's true although he was the only weapon for the Rams on offense.
JerseyNYC83 Dickerson fumbled twice in that playoff game against the bears at soldier field.
He was probably spent. He did have over 400 carries that season
at 2:17:35 not true. The Rams won a very cold playoff game in Dallas in 1983 and even the game in 1979 was not very warm. I guess Dallas is not a "cold weather city".
And later on in the '89 playoffs at Giant Stadium, upsetting the giants.
Best 2 offensive lines that season
There is a "Baseball in DC!" Sign there at RFK as I watch world series game 4 Houston Astros at Washington Nationals in 2019. Houston is up 8-1 in the bottom of the 9th, trying to even the series 2-2
Let's find out! So far it's been fumbles fumbles fumbles.... :(
Washington almost made it to a third straight Super Bowl appearance but couldn’t get past the Giants in East Rutherford.
Following week the 'Skins beat the Bears IN CHICAGO, 27-13, in what became known as the "Grapefruit" game.. (Ditka regrettably called Dexter Manley as dumb as a Grapefruit, in the week leading up to the game..)
Needless to say, Dexter Manley was on a mission and singlehandedly destroyed the Chicago game plan..
The 'Skins got shutout 17-0 by the Giants, the following week in the Meadowlands with the Giants and their D.C. Bill Bellichick, seemingly knowing EVERY play the Redskins were going to run..
Stats Rogers Thanks for
refreshing my memory.

49:06. Absolute bull shit. Hill's knee was clearly down before the ball came out. In any case, there was certainly not conclusive visual evidence to overturn the call on the field. The replay official must have been drunk.
Los Angeles Rams Bull your self, that ball was moving open your eyes and look without your feelings involved
Hey man don't hate, in the 80s we were a favored premier team, so yeah we got alot of calls, 30 years later everybody hates us, so we barely ever get a break even at home against scrub teams, I hate the Rams new uniforms btw...
