I’m 60 years old and I’ve been watching football since I was a little kid and I can guarantee you that the ‘85 Bears had the best defense of my lifetime, no doubt about it. Physical, ferocious, intimidating, and smart. They had the ability to take games over at will.
It was the greatest. 💀🔥

This is one reason why Dan Marino is the best QB the NFL has ever had. Don't care if he didnt win the super bowl, it takes a team. No QB was more talented and no one accomplished more with less
there will never be another defense like this because of the new rules for player safety, for better or worse
And also spread offenses with multiple receiver sets and quick passing attacks is what counters the super blitz heavy 4-6 defense.

Walter Peyton never looked for the sideline like Franco Harris did, he would aim straight for you. Dude could run like the wind, he had WR hands, he was a tremendous blocker and he could throw too. What a talent.

CORRECT! My college roommate hated the fact thatFranco Harris would run out of bounds rather than attempt to make contact for extra yardage. This drove him crazy!

I am so jealous of people who got to watch this gladiatorial era of the NFL as it happened. The rest of us born after 1985 just see the highlights in slow-motion and it doesn't show how fast and hard the game was played at this time. Any of the offenses that could go toe to toe with the 85 Bears, the 86 Giants, 87 Redskins etc would have a cakewalk in today's game.
You can watch full original broadcast games on UA-cam though. So at least if you are curious, you can watch older games in that manner. It's not the same of course as seeing everything week to week at the time it happened, but it's something if you have a couple of hours to burn.

Maybe but at least Super Bowls in this era have been generally way more exciting than the frequent blowouts we got throughout the 80s/90s

I was at that greenbay game when the fridge scored...it was a Monday night game
The defense was so legendary , history forgot that they had the 5th ranked offense in the league too
And it was the offense that separated this team from the Bears teams of 1984 and '86, which actually had more dominant defenses, but had very little offense except the obvious, Walter Payton. But in 1985, the offense was potent enough that only the Air Coryell Chargers scored more points than the Bears did in '85. And Air Coryell only scored 11 more points than the Bears did that season.
They weren't only potent, but in the top 10 teams that season, they probably had the most balanced offense.
That's what makes the 2015 Denver D so amazing to me. They had a completely inept offense and still won the SB. Beat Brady twice, then the high powered Panthers in the Super Bowl. Manning and Osweiler combined for the 30th ranked QB play that year.
Yep and #2 scoring offense too. I always get a kick out of the meatball fans that called them one dimensional. Then they have to give somenground with their argument and state the obvious with Payton. Then they have to be informed that Matt Suey was a fine secondary cement head FB/HB. Then they have to be informed that Willie Gault was a 1000 yard WR in the toughest defensive era ever and also be informed that Moorehead was a criminally underrated TE who came through in the passing game. Of course theres McMahon who NEVER has gotten the credit he should get who would have a field day in todays league. I love when moron couch potatoes accuse this team of being one dimensional. They were FAR from one dimensional and I DO believe the best single season team EVER.

Most of the great teams of the '70s-'90s couldn't play today's game. They'd be penalized, fined and suspensioned out of existence.
The reason I as an Englishman fell in love with American football. The Chicago Bears.

I grew up in Chicago...the city of perennial losers, The cubs, etc. Yet....when this team happened....it was like nothing else!! Every week was stunning. The game was over at 3pm and we were out of our minds the rest of the day!!! It was just EPIC! Week after week. Vindication. It was such a great time, so much so that I never really have been into football since. Nothing compares to it. It will never be that good.......the circumstances that brought all this together, everything lined up just right to make it happen.....just won't be there again, at least not in my lifetime. I live in Austin now, since 1986..... Hockey fan......Go Blackhawks!!
When they went to the SuperBowl and WON, I cried with GREAT tears of joy! I've been a Chicago Bears fan since I was 5yrs. old. Dick Butkus was my favorite player back then.

1989 SF 49ers outscored their 3 post season opponents by 19 more points than the 85 bears did.

Idk because about 10 or so of the teams they played has either a record of 8-8 or a losing record by the end of the season so it was any easy schedule, don’t remember the exact stat. Plus defenses were benefited by rules in 85 which made offenses way less efficient. People always say offenses got benefited by rule changes which they did but defenses already were benefited but no one talks about that.

Because rules favored physical defense for about 90% of the NFL’s history. The rules favoring offense are recent.

The bears went 14-2 despite their QBs throwing 12 TDs to 22 interceptions that year. They ended up losing in the divisional as they got shut down by the redskins with Flutie throwing 2 picks

Disagree. The kept blitzing which is what any QB wants you to do. Marino with his quick release was the wrong guy to do that to. Makes you wonder what would've happened in The Super Bowl if Miami is in New Orleans.

I had started watching NFL football in 1983 - 84 and my mate David and I went to Wembley to watch the Superbowl winners - Chicago Bears, - play 'America's team' the Dallas Cowboys in 1986. My take aways from the game were just how fast it was, how big the players were even without their armour and how pretty the cheerleaders were.
That Bears team were memorable for all sorts of reasons, but my favourites were Walter Peyton and Mike SIngletary. Both were superb players - of course - but both men were known to be really nice blokes. Peyton's nickname was 'Sweetness', but he died way too young , but Singletary is still a really nice guy.

Overlooked maybe because of his persona is the fact that McMahon when healthy was a very good thrower on the move.
I was 8 when the Bears won. I remember watching most of these games and possibly even crying when they lost to the Dolphins. Good times. Their defense was skilled and nasty. If you think Singletary was crazy as a coach, imagine that same intensity on the field.
How appropriate that the Bears get 46 points in the Super Bowl as a tribute to the 46 Defense. I remember that season. I am not even a Bears fan but to this day the highlights of the defense are fun to watch. Every team was in their way that year and everything went right.

Actually they weren't if you count takeaways. The change in defensive philosophy to a more passive defense made their +/- go to about breakeven from around +24. If Buddy Ryan would have stayed they would have won another Super Bowl.

Thank you for posting this! Born, raised and still living in Chicago I watched all these games first hand. The 85 Bears were the most baddest team EVER! NOBODY will ever come close to their skill, character and passion to win. These guys were the epitome of teamwork. I still jam to their superbowl shuffle! Know every word! Best defense I ever seen. That secondary was incredible, too. Frasier, Richardson, McKinnon, Gayle, Duerson, all of them could fly after the interception. McMahon could play, he could scramble and throw. Of course with a great running game, play action is unstoppable.
Wilbur Marshall was like a heat seeking missile. Loved watching that guy play. Hated when he left to go play for the Redskins.
It's interesting to see what happens if the Dolphins beat the Patriots in the AFC Championship and went to the Super Bowl. One of the greatest "what ifs" in NFL history, since Miami dominated Chicago in the regular season

The 1985 Bears are famous for their defense and for good reason. But people don't pay attention to how good their offense was under McMahon. This was an excellent all around team. As dominant as you will ever see.
I was a kid when I became a football and Bears fan this very year...been a loyal Bears fan all my life / ever since...and yes it's been rough for quite a while. But I do look back on this season of my childhood with great love...THIS Bears team was simply magical and legendary...thanks for posting this !!!

Those Bears pitched shut out of 45-0 in the playoffs. I don’t think that’s ever been done since 1970 merger.
and hasnt been topped. not just one game, but all of their playoff games that year were blowouts.
The Patriots scored 10 against them in the SB. The Bears shut out the Giants and Rams. 1n 3 games that will Never happen again.
They were the only team that I have ever seen where the opponents were frightened of them.
There were games where the defense scored more points than the offense.
I saw genuine fear in the faces of the St.Louis Rams players. I actually felt sorry for them. I believe they played the Cowboys and beat them 47-0 and coach Tom Landry told Mike Ditka while shaking his head “You guys are really good.”
Nearly every player on the team was “varsity”!
They didn’t have a junior varsity. I was in the Army in W.Germany in 1985 and television was tape delay and difficult to avoid the outcome of a game before seeing it, but still couldn’t believe it.
It was a lot like watching Mike Tyson fight early on in his career when no one survived the first round. The event was over before it began.

There couldn't be a more exciting and fun season for a football fan than what '85 Bears gave us. The electricity was phenomenal.
Perry was a true PHENOM - making sacks, lead blocks, running-down ball carriers for tackles, short yardage runs and CATCHES for touchdowns...
His speed was unmatched for a guy his size.
Most underrated = WILBER MARSHALL. 17:25 sounds like a gun shot!!! Love it.
McMahon told me (I drove limo in Las Vegas) Marshall was, absolutely, the hardest hitter on that team. Look at what that defense did, after he joined them; '84.

The most ultimate, grand, unbelievable one hit wonder of all time in any realm of life. Ungodly team that never approached 1985 again. Same players came back but were quite ordinary after 85. Unreal, Thought they would win 3 or 4 in a row. The Redskins, led by...Jay Shroeder,,,,made that defense look pedestrian in 86. Montana and Rice wrecked the Bears in 88, the Cowboys shut down the Bears in 91. Will never understand the dominance that never sustained. Even the Packers, Cowboys, Steelers , who had great defenses but not the 85 Bears won more than one. The stars aligned for one season. Unbelievable.
I thank you for this memory. Such good times watching DA BEARSSS when I was young with my family. Brought tears to my eyes with remembrances of these games. I'll always be a Bears fan because of these times and I hope to catch at least one game next season. Bears Forever!

It was a thing of beauty whenever the Defense took the field in '85. The personalities and skillsets of every single guy just seemed to gel and come together perfectly that season. Buddy Ryan was definitely the man! He had the respect of his guys and even Ditka had to give credit where credit was due when it came to Buddy and his "hit squad". Definitely every QB's nightmare that year.

I was born in 65, in Chicago. Grew up in Bloomington before moving to Ohio. Stayed a Bears fan. Watching the Super Bowl in Cincinnati i was the only one still watching after halftime. It was so sweet to watch the total domination of that game. The headline in the paper the next day was Chicago: Offense 46 Defense 46

its ironic becuase they, the dolphins, are the only absolutely undefeated team (including super bowl win, i know that the patriots' short lived dynasty won all regular season games and playoff games but not the super bowl) AND because the dolphins went undefeated 13 years earlier, the unlucky number to most people
And if they do not play the Dolphins that season. They may go undefeated and be the greatest team ever for a season.

That Mon. night in Miami( I was 15) the Fish were simply too fast and Marino had the best receiving tandem in the league with the "Marks" brothers.

I so much wanted to see a rematch, but the Dolphins D was pretty bad by that time, especially against the run. Arnsparger was gone by then and it showed.
Bears lost focus and it showed. Didn’t help that a Marinho pass literally bounces off a receiver’s helmet, right into the hands of another receiver for a td. Yeah, that was planned . Let’s stop the nonsense about Miami winning the superbowl if this or that. They didn’t get there.

Thank you, 85 Bears for providing us with the best football ever played. The only downside is, we will never be entertained with that kind of football again. What a group of characters and football players.

The 70's Steel Curtain was the second best defense of all time over a long stretch. If you take their best 8 years from 72-79 only the Vikings from 69-76 were better.

The really sad thing is that Walter Peyton didn’t get to score a touchdown in the Super Bowl. Just don’t understand what Ditka was thinking.

Watching an interview on the game (America's Game 1985 perhaps) Ditka actually confesses not having Payton score is the biggest regret of his coaching career. I might be wrong here, but think I recall him saying that mid-game he lost track of all the touchdowns, and coulda swore Payton had already scored, and that's why Perry has a TD. He woulda called on 34, had he known otherwise

Though it is difficult to watch that Super Bowl because I am a pats fan, you have to admit the Bears defense is so unstoppable! Wow, just crushed everyone. One of the best, if not the best.
It's sad to see that Mike Hartenstine isn't mentioned often as an important part of the '85 Bears defense.

Watching these highlights, and seeing them live back then, I am convinced Wilber Marshall was one of the very greatest defensive players ever to play. And very few know how truly great he was. He's everywhere on the field and the most explosive player going.
Like i said: he may have been the best of them!
