I remember him hitting the first home run of the year for the Twins in 2015 in Baltimore. As a Twins fan, he was one of my favorite players, I always viewed him as a underated fielder, with pop. This was a great concept and really fun first episode. I felt like you had great stats planned out to talk about, and you and Trev vibed really well. I think I'd watch any of these you want to make - always great to get to know more Major Leaguers as guys and hear some of their thoughts on their careers, even with guys we know well like Plouffe.

I have a few questions about the discussion at about 19:30. 1) Why does loving closer to the foul line increase WAR(or as you mentioned an outfielder moving back)? You mention that it limits extra base hits. What about WAR favors players that are good at preventing extra base hits? 2) Listen to what Trevor says at about 19:45. He says that "idk if front offices are going to tell you to do that" and that players should "play that game" to do all they can to increase their WAR. Obviously it is in the players incentive to increase their WAR, but isn't it still in the teams incentive as well. Why would a team not want a player increasing their WAR, if it only makes them more valuable. Trevor suggests this(very slightly) that increasing individual WAR may not always be best for the team. Is that true and in what cases would that be true? Just curious on the interpretation of that.
My interpretation of both 1) Moving closer to the foul line (at least in Trevor's case) resulted in an increase in his overall defensive metrics. His WAR increased because the defensive component of WAR (in this case, Defensive Runs Saved) increased. 2) WAR and team wins aren't always 1:1 correlated. I think Trev felt that taking a step closer to the line artificially increased his WAR. He appeased the defensive metrics, but didn't necessarily become a more effective defender. And if WAR becomes a standard for salary arbitration, then players who use defensive positioning to increase their WAR would have money to gain, and the front offices money to lose.

As a former 1B, I've always thought it was WAY more important than modern analytics would let you believe, and I'm glad Trev agrees. You don't really appreciate a good 1B until you've played with a bad one, and then you can understand how much value they provide.
It’s kinda weird to see how we judge like player age. Like when Trevor said the first time he faced Scherzer was in the minors it felt weird for me, even though I know they’re about the same age. The difference is like my brain considers Trevor Plouffe to be a young baseball media guy, and Max Scherzer to be an old baseball player guy, if that makes sense.
This is Episode 1 of the best baseball content on the internet. A series that in time will hit 100 episodes with acclaim. Begin with Rojas, Glasnow, Giolito, May, Brault and roll with it!

An interesting thing about defense at 1B is statistically the best defensive 1B this year was Ty France, someone who was a 3B basically his whole career. Just goes to show how much defense is something that can be learned when you have a dedicated position to learn.

If the Twins were not into analytics it is not surprising that Trevor did not focus on getting on base because batting in the middle of the lineup traditionally means you need to knock in runs. Had come up with an analytical system in the minors he likely would have had a different outlook on his approach. Great career nonetheless. I wonder if he ever played on any teams with the guy from Antonelli Baseball? I like that channel too.
