Just so you know, John Leguizamo was playing the artist Henri Toulouse Lautrec, and he wasn't a little person. He had a condition that made the bones in his legs super fragile, so they broke often, couldn't bear his weight, and ended up being stunted. So as an adult he was significantly shorter than the average person, but with the same proportions from the waist up. So without an actor with the same condition, this was the most accurate way to portray him

In many ways, this movie's visual style and camerawork is closer to animated films than live-action. I love how both the viewer and the characters are constantly careening around the space with no regard for physics or even logic, but purely because it fits the FEELING of a particular moment.

If a theater near you brings Moulin Rouge back for a viewing on the big screen you have to go see it! It’s a totally different experience! At the opening Satie as the conductor really looks like he’s standing there as a full-sized person. And there are things going on in the corners of the frame you don’t notice on a computer or television screen. Not to mention the sweeping shots through the windmill are so much better experienced on a large screen.

Down With Love (a duet with Renée Zellweger during the credits)
A Life Less Ordinary (a duet with Cameron Diaz)

Thank you for a great reaction! I have always loved this musical.
John Leguizamo wasn't playing a little person. Henri Toulouse-Lautrec was a real person. Because of an accident his legs never developed. "Born into the aristocracy, Toulouse-Lautrec broke both his legs around the time of his adolescence and, due to the rare condition pycnodysostosis, was very short as an adult due to his undersized legs."

As others have mentioned, John Leguizamo wasn't playing a little person. He was playing someone with a condition that hindered the growth of his bones, which, in combination with an accident as a child that broke both his legs, made him shorter than the average man. However, he wasn't little person. One of only two real historical figures in the movie. Henri Tolouse-Lautrec, a Post-Impressionist painter who spent a lot of time in Montmartre. The Moulin Rouge was/is a real place, a cabaret hall in the Montmartre section of Paris, which was co-founded by Charles Zidler. Though, sadly, he would have been dead two years by the start of the story.

Great movie and reaction! Baz Luhrmann did an amazing job with this and Ewan McGregor & Nicole Kidman were "spectacular spectacular" & pulled on those heart strings. I've had the chance to see the Broadway production. They updated/changed a lot of the songs for the stage show (Backstage Romance is amazing)...a great show overall with the theater draped ceiling to floor in red...and a windmill and elephant at the front of the stage. Definitely go and see the touring production if it comes to your area.

I don't know if opera is of any interest to you, but if you get the chance to see a production of La Boheme (1896), I recommend it. Baz Luhrmann produced it in Australia in the early 1990s and modernized it a bit (he set in the 1950s), and you can definitely see how he made the leap to Moulin Rouge. (An aside, La Boheme is also the inspiration for the musical Rent).

I’ve always read this movie as a rock opera mashup between Puccini’s “La Boheme” (an opera Luhrmann has directed) & the Greek myth of Orpheus: full of frequent allusions & metaphors to the underworld, Orpheus’s transformative gift of poetry/song, looking back…etc. More than anything, I think this mythic underpinning to the story is what has contributed to the film’s enduring appeal.
Something else I love about the film no one talks about is the cinematographer, Donald McAlpine. His other beautifully lit & colorful film from around this time is 2003's “Peter Pan.” Nobody seems to remember that film…it’s not amazing, but in many ways it's more joyful & more thoughtful than even its own source material! (The Native tribe, for instance, is an actual tribe in the film...as opposed to Barrie's thoroughly racist depiction in the novel, but I digress.) With how McAlphine lit & shot it, visually it's a super fun companion piece to watch with “Moulin Rouge,” although they’re totally different films.
Last word & hot take...I don't think I'd enjoy this anywhere near as much as a musical: a major aspect of this film has been how it is very, very much a cinematic work. The editing! The sound mixing! The closeups! McAlphine's fairy tale lighting! It's exactly the kind of experience the movies were invented for.

Wow I haven’t watched this since back when it came out.
Honestly all I remember is Nicole Kidman being incredibly hot in it and John Leguizamo playing some kind of little person.

Henri Toulouse-Lautrec was a real person - an artist as well as a designer for posters for the Moulin Rouge. He had some sort of a condition so when he had an accident as an adolescent his legs basically stopped growing so he had the torso of a full-grown man on the legs of an adolescent the rest of his life. His family was aristocracy (his parents were cousins) who could trace their family back to the time of Charlemagne, but he felt out of place and rejected by them because of his legs and felt more at home with the artists and prostitutes of Montmartre.

It's a shame to watch this movie in a small screen and without a badass home theater surround sound system.

@@LatetotheParty I'd like to add that you probably know this already but just in case you don't; Les Miserables was the first musical movie to be done LIVE. so instead of recording the songs and putting those recordings over the actual scenes, they were sung LIVE. Anne Hathaway's perf of I Dreamed A Dream was one take. She asked to do 7 other takes but they chose her first. They did it because they wanted the acting to be as important as the singing hence it being done live. Makes it even more incredible.

This is going to sound funny. But the first time I saw this film, I didn't pay too much attention at the beginning nor I saw that she was coughing because of the TB... I saw her coughing later and then was the corset thing, when the woman is tighten it. So, fast forward when comes the end and I thought Satine died because the corset was too tight... sorry hahaha but it was real, I was like 15 😂😂

I've always hated the way Christian treated Satine when he thought she broke up with him, regardless him throwing her on the ground and tossing money at her was unacceptable. His character was very selfish and immature, but love your reaction and love the musical especially Roxanne.

If you go back to the middle, he's actually playing the original plot of the Spectecular Spectecular through, where the Penniless Sitarplayer does exactly as he does: throws money at her and thanks her for "curing him of his ridiculous obsession with love". Which is when - haha - the magical Sitar says its lines ("the greatest thing ....") and Satine sings their Secret Song to make him see that it was never true.
Christian even says "I was filled with doubts. And I had to know and there was only one way to find out the truth".
But when I first watched it and the second time, too, I found his actions just as appalling. It's only recently that I realized it was a play to make her be truthful. ALTHOUGH I think that he went a 'bit' overboard when they were still behind the curtain.
