Hi guys 🥰 I added a second masterclass! There are spots to sing or observe. I am so excited to be able to work one on one with some of you! hannahbayles.as.me/schedule/e6fb197a/?categories%5B%5D=Masterclasses
Love the Moulon Rouge review! Perhaps you could one day cover Chicago to see what you think of Richard Gere, Catherine Zeta Jones and Renee Zellweiger's singing
Christian's reaction was very much in line with a young man experiencing his first love, with all the dramatic highs and lows that come with it. Does that excuse him? No, but Satine chose to forgive him and still love him and in the end that's what matters. And in the end, Satine was able to spend the last of her life with a man who truly loved her. Yes, the medleys were lots of fun, but I love laughing at the Like a Virgin part - and Come What May is one of the most romantic songs ever.
ONE OK ROCK, Japanese band, has a phenomenal vocalist, Taka, he covered *HELLO and Easy On Me - Adelle, he can sing it in original key* check them out!! I guarantee you'll be surprised by his unique voice!! Also check *Take What You Want - LIVE Tokyo Dome 2018!* their LIVE performances are always top tier, even far more better than the studio version!! I'd really appreciate it! Thank you
She got shot? You’re likely remembering The Phantom of the Opera (the sequel) . . . That’s how Love Never Dies ends, where Christine accidentally gets shot when aiming for someone else.
Also, did you watch and react to that yet? Wasn’t it horrible how even though the Phantom’s character arc came to a good conclusion at the end of the Phantom of the Opera, Webber undid part of the Phantom’s arc, made Raoul a drunken entirely different personality than in the original story . . . I hope if you have already watched that that you noticed those things. 😌
I was way too young for it but I remember watching Moulin Rouge when I was 10 shortly after it came out on DVD and loved watching it all the time during that period - Ewan McGregor in this movie was probably one of my first big crushes when I was growing up (it blew my mind at the time seeing Obi-Wan singing amazingly and since then I tend to swoon if an actor I like tends to be a good singer too 🥰)… about 2 years ago, I was lucky enough to go to my first convention in my area where Ewan was a guest and I got to do a photo op with him and my inner 10yo self was screaming the entire time - for anyone interested, it was a very quick interaction but yes, he was such a sweet person and utterly gorgeous irl 😍
the "jealous man" scene is such an overused trope but its played so beautifully in this movie with Ewan choosing to approach it in an almost childlike way, being sheepish and apologetic because he was warned and knows he`s wrong to ask. His eyes dart around avoiding direct eye contact as he`s ashamed of the request and its so endearing. Paired so beautifully with Nicole remaining the stoic adult in the room, but her expression collapses as soon as her face is hidden from his sight. Its such a blink and you`ll miss it sweet little scene. Quite different from the "ultimatum", "picking a fight" or "putting their foot down" approach this trope usually takes in most movies, cause the reality is he just wants to be reassured
yes it is played in such a way, and it would almost be uncharacteristic of his character to not be concerned. I mean she passed out in his arms...but there really is no good way out of it because it would be against his heart to not do anything, but yet she is trying so hard to hold it together for him and he makes her crack.🥺 I think the character of christian is so infatuated with idea of love that he doesn't know how to properly express his love. It is very much so a story of their weakness's lining up and that is how they "fall in love'. I mean anyone who goes through something traumatizing together... he is also the best she has seen, she didn't believe she deserved better, because her job trained her to believe she wasn't enough for a different life.
It gets me every time. I lost count of how many times I've seen this movie, it's my number one top favorite movie of all time, and it STILL gets me. 22 years later and it hits like the first time, every time.
My favorite part of this movie is that every time Ewan McGregor sings he gets that smile on his face like 'hey guys, look! I'm singing!' Also, this soundtrack was my entire personality for a hot minute.
El Tango de Roxanne from Moulin Rogue is one of my most played on Spotify. I think it's a wonderful song and I listen to it everyday. No joke. lol This movie is incredible to me, I cry every single time. When Christian screams out, it is so visceral! Ugh. Such a great movie with a great soundtrack.
Also, the dance number is fire! I get chills when all the dancers are performing the Argentinian Tango in unison. It's an incredible number that highlights the over sexualized, often violent life Satine leads.
To be fair, he did probably catch tuberculosis from Santine. They made out and sang face to face all the time, so he would have been continuously exposed from they met till she died.
It’s so funny cause I always knew she had tuberculosis, but I never figured that he somehow got it, lol. Because they never showed him getting it and they never referred to it so I just figured he was fine.
@@Rosannasfriend Totally same, I only had the thought while watching this video. Of course he might not have gotten it, but it seems unlikely? I think?
No, speaking in accusatory and hateful ways to someone you claim to love is NOT something to aspire to, but neither is giving into someone against your better judgement, dating someone with a significantly lower maturity level, or LYING to and ABANDONING them regardless of the circumstances. Sateen is not an innocent victim, she made some poor decisions herself. They hurt EACH OTHER. Excusing women from accountability doesn't protect or empower them. Also a quote: "For many of us in India, it was a matter of pride that the country was being represented in a way that had nothing to do with slums and poverty. Even during my most recent re-watch, I guffawed at the mix of Indian ingredients thrown in to flavor the film, but I didn’t hate it. I found it comforting. Nostalgia played a part in that, but part of the appeal of the film is how far removed it feels from reality. So, it’s understandable that young Bohemians in Montmartre, France, would cobble together a flamboyant idea of the country; just as it is believable that an Australian filmmaker would be taken in by the glitz and glamour of an Indian film and use it as inspiration for his next project. After all, Moulin Rouge! is a fantasy and India is part of that fantasy." - Mohita Mohan Moulin Rouge throws a hyper-dramatic and colorful light on EVERY nationality, personality, occupation, and archetype it includes. Was there a single French person in the main cast? Were prostitutes accurately portrayed? Were bohemian beliefs and behaviors "appropriated" by non-bohemian actors? Was Toulouse being played by John Leguizamo disrespectful to actors/people with dwarfism? It's a goofy remake of a movie and book released in the 1950's. Holding it to the "woke" standards of today isn't reasonable.
I think youre missing the point of when this movie was set and what her "job" actually was. He was very hurt at the end of the movie by her and acted out. She also lied to him to protect him but he didnt understand and all he thought was that she fooled him into falling for her. I love the ending, it makes it so emotional and the music is absolutely great in this movie. Absolutely one of my favorites
Yeah, I think she breezed over or forgot about the part when Satine told Christian she was just using him for his writing ability, and that their whole relationship was a lie. I do remember Hannah saying she didn't feel like Satine's lie was believable, but that's *her* pov. In the movie though, Christian believes it entirely. Sure, he acted really shitty, but it's a very human response to someone, whom you believed you shared real love with, to betray you like that. It's not a perfect response, which makes it believable in a movie that's very fantastical. I think sometimes people react to these things with just their emotions (maybe a bit of projection?), without actually analyzing the sequence of events against the context of the plot.
@@jhmi7877okay but if the things you say when you’re hurt are that awful and sexist and cruel along with being physical then that means you do feel those things inside. Him believing she beguiled and used him doesn’t excuse his actions. If he had called her a liar, a user, heartless, things like that, it would have been totally understandable. But calling her a whore and chasing her down to pay her is showing that he always disrespected her and her job.
@@arifikeI mean she is, literally, a whore. It's the crass word for it, but it's still not wrong. The rest of what he says is certainly hurtful, but not misogynistic (you're nothing to me, I'm cured of my obsession with love). And after she essentially gaslit him into thinking she was using him and never loved him in the first place it's essentially cheek for cheek.
I think you’re looking through a 2023 lens, at a 2001 movie, set a hundred years before then. It’s hard not to see things which would not stand in a script written today, played out on screen. I try and look at it like I do my childhood favorite musical, Seven Brides for Seven Brothers, as a product of its moment in time. Nicole Kidman and Ewan McGregor’s version of David Bowie’s Heroes, is perfection.
for sure. tbh even in today's light (though definitely it would have been written differently if made now) Christian is way harsh but she also gaslit him saying their love was /all fake/ and ghosted him. He doesn't know what to believe. He can't trust his memories or beliefs. Plus, he's not privy to the information we have as the audience. He's young, naive, and sheltered as well as a starry-eyed idealist. He doesn't really understand the seriousness of Satine's life or the power of the Duke; a privilege but one that also makes him vulnerable in this situation. He doesn't understand why their love isn't conquering their hardships. So in that way, his heart isn't just broken, he's losing his faith and experiencing a paradigm shift too. also love heroes in this, it's so perfect as like a bohemian sentiment that falling in love is a heroic act
Thank you--I was starting to get beyond irritated at Hannah calling Christian a 'red flag' and whatnot. Like no one has ever lashed out at the person they loved after they've been hurt by them. Also, also, if she would remember, when they were in his bedroom writing scenes, he basically played out in real life how the scene was supposed to go: "Thank you for curing me of my ridiculous obsession with love!"
@@lykelrae oh my god you're right, i forgot! He's not making a scene, everything he says on stage is him just finishing the scene as written, it's why the line is so over the top. (obv with now a personal truth, but not bc he was publicly humiliating her to a theater full of strangers lol)
I think it may have been overlooked that she told him she didn’t love him anymore and that she chooses his arch rival, that’s why he was so hurt and angry and that’s also why she needed to do a grand gesture to prove that she actually does love him. I look at like flipping the genders to remove that from the equation. It would be like if he had told her that he chooses someone else and that their love was fake and not real. Just how I see it, they truly love each other and were hurt and hurt people hurt people even when they love them deep down.
@@RosannasfriendNo. Its not. He wrote those lines in the musical. He was acting out the part. Have you seen the movie before? If you haven't and went only by Hannah's response I can understand why you feel this way. As someone who is a ***survivor*** of domestic abuse, and has watched this movie a million times, I can assure you he is just reciting the lines he wrote for the play. Is he angry? Yes. Is he channeling his anger through those lines? Also yes. Does that make it abusive? Depends. I don't think so. He's not a misogynistic asshole. I he didn't think she owed him her love. He was hurt. He was reciting the lines he wrote for that play. That is all. Yet, again I ask: Have you seen this film? Do you know the context? Do you remember him saying that he'd write those very lines into the play? It happens during the montage of "Come What May." "Come What May" is a lovely song, but its not lovely enough to cover up an entire plot point.
Honestly though. I had to stop and roll my eyes at Hannah completely flipping on Christian like that. Like... Ok, Satine making him believe that she'd been lying to him and using him the entire time, breaking his heart and making him feel completely worthless, probably making him doubt himself and question all his future relationships if the truth hadn't come out, is completely fine and chill, but when he reacts like someone who feels betrayed and heartbroken he's suddenly complete trash. And like.. yes, i understand why Satine did it, i don't blame her for doing it, but I feel like so often women are allowed to totally destroy men and it's not seen as an issue, but if a man reacts at all it's disgusting. I really wish people would stop to flip the genders for a minute before making judgements.
@@RoseCentaur1916 I don't think Christian is an abuser (not enough data for there to be a pattern of behavior) but he is a giant asshole and he does deserve a lot criticism for his actions, even if he was hurt. For one, even if those lines are in the play, and she knew that, they are being said out of context, out of scene, by someone who is not the actor and not supposed to be here. He could have approached her at another time to express his hurt. Instead, he cornered her to yell at her while she's in the middle of something important, chased her and tried to physically keep her from running away, then publicly humiliated her using something that was important to both of them and could fuck over everyone in that play if it failed because he thinks his feelings trump everything. For two, they went from Satine having a hysterical breakdown on Christian about how she couldn't sleep with the Duke and the Duke knows about her real feelings and making plans to get the fuck away to her coming to him stone faced and saying I choose the man who terrified and coerced me over you less than 48 hours later. It does not take a genius to look at this scenario and go oh something is wrong here and one or both of us is in trouble. It does take someone incredibly self-absorbed and shallow to take that entire interaction at face value because it hurts his feelings. For three, swapping the genders (as OP suggested) means shit. If Satine is a largely penniless man being pressured into sex work to save the life of the woman he loves and the livelihoods of everyone else he cares about, his position would be just as bad, his actions just as understandable, and Christians response would not be any less terrible for coming from a woman instead. Satine didn't need a big gesture to prove she loved Christian. Her selling herself and trying to scare him away to save his life WAS her big gesture. Christian is the one who fell at every test of their relationship and then threw a public tantrum like the Duke when things didn't go his way. He is not wrong for feeling hurt (even if I think he's an idiot for believing any of that for any stretch of time) but he is 100% wrong in how he dealt with that hurt.
When Christian throws the money at Satine, it's actually part of the play. You can see them rehearse the scene earlier in the film. He's saying the lines like he's the main character in "disguise." He probably means it, but he is just following the script.
I looooooove this movie so much, and am so happy you did a reaction to it. The brilliant thing about the movie is that the romance is portrayed so intense and so good that you forgot the beginning where Christian says 'the woman I love is dead', so that when the death scene comes, you get the emotions and the rollercoaster feeling. Everyone singing sounds amazing, but Ewan's version of 'Your Song' is still the best one I've hear, including Elton's original - you know I'm right, don't fight me on this. I would love to see a reaction to Sweeney Todd, if you don't mind a bit of horror and blood. Jamie Bower's rendition of Johanna, omg chills every single time
Glad you're back and I hope all is well! If you're looking for more to watch and/or react to, how about Enchanted? Amy Adams and James Marsden understood their assignments and played their roles to perfection.
Honestly, Christian at the end was pretty much just him being hurt and acting out. She really hurt him deep to keep him safe and he didn’t see that until it was to late and the tuberculosis got her.
I disagree so much, but I love you. I love your reactions. I don't think Christian is a jerk, I think he was hurt and angry and lashed out after she broke his heart. That doesn't necessarily justify his reaction, but I think it definitely explains a bit. It was a very human reaction. She didn't lie to him because of the Duke, but because she is dying. He loved her, but all in all he is a flawed character. He's jealous, and she knew she could use that against him to try and save him. Her singing was telling him it was all a lie. I admit my favorite character has to be Zeidler, or Zeigler I can never remember. His song is absolutely heartbreaking. And he cares for Satine, yes he's using her for his business, but he is so broken to know she's dying.
Come What May has me in a chokehold, especially the reprise(?) at the end. The call and response, the harmony, the HARMONY!!!! it gives me chills and it brings a tear to my eye every single time i hear it
Christian being the cutest, most lovable boyfriend throughout 99% of the movie. Then he makes one bad move cause he is deeply hurt, heartbroken and miserable. Hannah: "I hate him, he is a jerk" Welcome to the world of 2023....
We read Camille in our theatre masters class in college (courtesan dying of consumption story similar in nature) and our professor said he had never seen this. We cancelled his planned class one day and made him watch this. Youre welcome Doc
I don't think anyone mentioned this yet in the comments, but all the singing is done live in this movie, no lip-syncing. The director wanted their genuine acting & voices so he had them do it all live. Makes the movie all the more enjoyable to me knowing it's live
They may have sung live while filming but most of the audio is definitely the prerecorded audio. They probably did the live singing while filming so it would look genuine on camera but then used the recorded audio for the final product. There was a handful of times that a line or two of the live singing was used though.
@@Spirits-n-Giggles You should watch "Why Les Miserables (2012) is Worse Than You Think" by Sideways. He goes super in depth about the production and recording of the movie and how the director set up all the singers for failure. Its wild.
I SCREAMED WHEN I SAW THIS TITLE!!! THIS IS THE MUSICAL THAT TURNED ME INTO AN OBSESSIVE MUSICAL FANGIRL!!!! THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR DOING THIS!!! IT'S MY FAVORITE!!! I love Ewan Mcgregor so much in this movie. So awesome!!
I never thought Nicole Kidman had a strong enough voice to keep up with the other amazing actors in this movie...but over time learned to appreciate it. Still one of my all-time favorite movies!!
I think you're being too hard on Christian. He's just had the WORST 24 hours, and it wasn't even over yet. The day starts with the love of his life "sleeping with someone else" (granted it didn't happen, but that's where his mind was that morning), then she runs to him and they're going to run away, but then she comes BACK and says "Psych! never mind. I'm staying with the Duke".... Yeah, he's a little bit out of his mind and in my opinion his outburst is understandable. Everyone has a breaking point. To suggest we don't and that people should be discarded the instant they do something less than ideal is an unfair standard and expectation.
YES!! That would be amazing!! Sierra and Ramin are 100% THE best Christine an Phantom to date imo. Their voices and chemistry are just absolutely breathtaking.
This movie was literally everything to me when it came out and I think I was like 14 or 15. It was the first musical I'd ever seen, I fell in love. I fell in love with the music, the story, Ewan McGregor and his voice, with Nicole Kidman and her voice and THE red dress that I absolutely wanted as a prom dress but couldn't get one. This played each night for 10 nights at the local cinema and I went to 9 showings, missing only one for band practice. I was obsessed. Literally.
22:45 "Why do I remember her being shot?" / *cuts to a scene of Satine choking on blood, dying in Christian's arms* / probably that scene right there is why lol
I'd love it if you reacted to West Side story, either the original or remake. Also, Singing in the Rain. Thank you for making a small corner of the Internet so lovely ❤
One of my favorite films of all time, Ewan McGregor lives rent free in my heart since then. His incredible singing gets me every time I watch it. The songs, the set design, just everything is so pretty.
This was one of my most favorite movies of all time. When me and my husband was just dating as bf and gf, we were like a year into dating. It was his birthday and i got him a tag necklace with the saying from this movie on it. "The greatest thing you will ever learn is just to love, and be loved in return." He still wears it and our 10 yr wedding anniversary is next year ^_^.
I would 100% recommend going to see Moulin Rouge onstage, they are touring. I saw it and it was amazing. And they used some more updated songs too, they did a mix between the classic songs and new ones.
Could you react to Dreamcatchers newest album VillianS Album description: Dreamcatcher returns 6 months after wrapping up the Apocalypse Era. The second installment of their parallel world series, VersuS, is about the diversity of ways to reach your goals and respond to temptation. The title track of VillainS, the first album in the series, OOTD is short for "Outfit Of The Day", which means fashion of the day. It's a big part of the "me" identity, showing the narcissism of Villain's strong convictions, and transparent greed. The album also includes 'Rising' to showcase Dreamcatcher's rock sound and strong convictions 'Shatter' about the longing for freedom from being turned to stone by Medusa 'We Are Young' with a message of hope that we can accomplish anything while we are young.
the canadian team, tessa virtue and scott moir? i think it inspired a performance in the tv show Spinning Out with Kaya Scodelario, love everything about this
@@jenniferhiemstra5228 I think what this commenter was actually referring to was more that Moulin Rouge has a lot of La Boheme vibes and it was probably at least a Little bit inspired by it, but yeah not the primary inspiration.
I love Ewan McGregor in this. He's just incredible. His is my favourite singing voice. Just love how you just feel everything when he sings, the emotion behind it. I also love that his Scottish accent slips out slightly in Elephant Love Medley when he sings "No I won't" 😊❤
OMG YES I SECOND THIS!!! Not to mention the phenomenal singing from Eddie Murphy, Jaime Foxx, and Anika Noni Rose!! Everyone absolutely KILLED IT in Dreamgirls!!
Was delighted by the Romeo & Juliet reference, as Baz Luhrmann also directed Romeo & Juliet before this, and in fact used bits of the old set for this movie (e.g. the "l'amour" sign shown at one point)
That's the actual original preformer of Chamma Chamma at 19:45. Center stage. It's not really appropriation when you have the original writer/singer, Alka Yagnik, center stage preforming a variation of her own song, in the film. Plus, the song is about enjoying life because death is envivitatable. Chamma Chamma being onomatopoeia for the jangling of Yama's anklets (best translated as god of "Entropy/Hades/Death"). The message being to enjoy your time because it's limited, eventually we all die. Embrace what you have (Love) because eventually Krishna/Yama will come jangaling to claim us sooner than we may expect. Very fitting considered the overall plot and next scene.
The harmonies kill me here and my favorite is el tango de Roxanne. I played it on repeat as a kid and it ruined the original song for me because the vibe just fits so well the way they did it and the way ewan’s part just adds to it
Oh I can't wait to get home to watch this. Depsite going into it knowing what was going to happen, I still sat there on the edge of my seat. First time I saw this was at like 3am and I GASPED at the end. Love Ewan 💫 in anything so him as lead AND singing 🌟. Such a great cast and soundtrack 🎉
He was convinced Satine had chosen the Duke literally overnite. He felt betrayed and used. I don’t think his reaction was out of bounds. Love your channel.
That isn't abusive. Apparently we just want to view things through a lens of the woman is never wrong, but she lied to him-not that he knew-and told him that their love was fake and that she was going to be with the bad guy, so his response is a pretty rational one tbh. He also said the line that they had written out for this part in the play to begin with, so his anger and sadness just made that line much more emotional. Lashing out at someone who hurt you is not an irrational or abusive response. If he had done it repeatedly or gaslit her, that would be a different story, but she is the one who gaslit him.
I'm disappointed in your disappointment in the ending. When you've been that badly hurt, and you've been made to believe that the woman you fell in love with was pretending the whole time, you're gonna act badly. You're going to say mean and hurtful things, you're going to pay your "tab", because that's all she said she was to you. Is it healthy? No, but it's reality. I'm sure it was in the plans to talk it out after curtain call. They just didn't get the chance. This is my all time, number one favorite movie. We stan Nicole Kidman and Ewan McGregor.
I get your point but he humilliated her in front of everyone 😢 For me it was a little bit to much. Yes it’s reality but it sucks. They could’ve changed it. It’s just my opinion
Thank you!! She goes to him and does her level best to convince him that it wasn't real, that she's nothing more than a whore who was using him, and he gets no grace for taking it badly?? I guess maybe I'm a pushover, but the bit right before the stage door opens, and he's begging to understand, for her to tell him she doesn't love him, just wrecks me every time. And then the spotlight is on him, and he delivers his monolog (obviously heartbroken, fabulous acting from Ewan!) which, by the way, is foreshadowed earlier in the movie when they're rehearsing with Toulouse, right down to the "thank you for curing me of my ridiculous obsession with love." Why is Christian's behavior all red flags, but Satine gets to absolutely wreck him and no one cares? Just because we know she's doing it to save his life? He doesn't know that! I think this movie is brilliant, and I really don't get how people can't have a little compassion for *both* Satine and Christian.
@@shadowcat1017 Exactly! Thank you! The system wrecked them both. He gets a little grace for filling his role as the penniless sitar player and "throwing money at her feet and leaving the kingdom forever".
@@Black-Swan-007 Well at least they could’ve charged the wey he talked to her at the end. He can still be mad but calling her those things was kind of disrespectful for me
i think it was that whole "you broke my heart that i must say this to get myself to hate you, but i still love you" style of movie that was super big around that time period. i remember watching that when iw as a preteen and loooooved it! loved the songs, had the soundtrack, watched it a lot lol, def red flags looking at it now, but that's the fun of show biz, it's all a story, not reality :) love ya! can't wait for the next video ^.^
Yeah, in high school, I was totally obsessed. Watching this video, still obsessed but yeah... Christian saying those things to her is a major red flag. Fun fact: this was just after Nicole Kidman and Tom Cruise had divorced and as an outtake Ewan yelled "SHE DOESN'T LOVE TOM!". Also watching the Duke switch back and forth between his real voice and the Duke is delightful.
How come I'm not seeing people say that Christian should have seen what she said as a red flag. The movie is about Love... the passion of emotion. Suspend your disbelief. It's a musical!!!!! There is no belief in reality to suspend. Let yourself be swallowed in it. Bathe in the warmth and tragedy of passionate love in the face of a world that seeks to destroy you.
I highly recommend reacting to anything from Moulin Rouge! The musical on Broadway!!! My personal favorite is Aaron Tveit’s El Tango de Roxanne or his rendition of Come What May which are both available via official accounts on UA-cam! Really anything from the musical or him is fantastic! He does a FANTASTIC cover of Maria as well that gives me chills every time.
what this is actually insane. so i watch binged your videos bcs you reacted to pitch perfect (i love pitch perfect) and burlesque. and i was thinking "has she reacted to moulin rouge yet?" AND HERE IT IS?!!!

This is my favorite movie of all time...I will always ugly cry at the end. I've never heard such a real and convincing sob, nothing compares to Ewan crying after she dies...makes me wonder what real life experience he had to internally tap into for that scene. Ewan and Nicole are amaaaazing together, visually and vocally. Such great chemistry. Funnily enough, I also saw it for the first time at 13! It was my 13th birthday party...also a sleepover lol...France/Paris themed bc I was obsessed at that age. From the first time I watched it I was all about it. I showed it to my husband for the first time almost exactly a year ago and he said, "Wow...this is the most Madeline thing I've ever seen in my life." Biggest compliment IMO ahahah I don't even blame Christian for being toxic...it's his first time in love, it's a WILD situation, he's lived a pretty sheltered and idealistic life before moving to France (at least that's what it seems like from the intro to the movie). I think everybody is a little toxic when they're burned by their first love. Just bc he's a grown man doesn't make that burn any less painful. Just my perspective in this *fictional* scenario. Do not condone toxicity in relationships lol
Please react to dreamcatchers album VillianS Description: Title track: OOTD, your Outfit Of The Day also serves as an expression of who you are today. If you're a confident person, you're unlikely to wear your outfit of the day for anyone else's taste. In this song, confidence borders on narcissism, and it's driven by a stubborn but firm conviction. The song is in the Pop punk genre, and it relies heavily on the instrumental and vocal effects used in Punk rock to convey this unconventional and subversive confidence. B-side: Rising this song recalls Dreamcatcher's journey over the years, while also conveying a strong message of conviction that with unbreakable willpower, they will do well in the future. It is a metal rock song with a fast tempo and an intense sound that seems to move forward without stopping. B-side: Shatter, it represents the "self" that has been deprived of its freedom and is being turned to stone by Medusa. It suggests that the oppressed self is as good as dead, and that if someone breaks it, it will disappear or be liberated. Based on the narrative, the song highlights the lyrics of someone who would rather ask the birds to take them up to the sky, followed by the the 'self' turning to stone in despair and finally not being able to speak. B-side: We Are Young, To everyone who cares about the future, right now. A message of hope that we are young and can achieve anything. This is a progressive house track with an emotional melody and cool synths that reinforce the message of hope.
Art imitates life... or vice versa. Christian's hurtful words during the play were the words from the play. He had written the end of the story, then ended up living them himself. It's a bit conflicting to decide if he himself felt that way or was simply destined to that end by fate. Oh, and I thought it was funny when you called him out for being over the top calling out for Satine. What part of the movie up to that point wasn't over the top? 😂
Aaron Tveitt is the best Christian and that one clip of him singing El tango De Roxanne lives in my heart.... and Hannah, trust me, you need to watch it
I always took it as Satine had convinced Christian that it was all a lie and she was playing him for a fool the entire time. So he was like, fine, if that's all this was to you then have it your way. It's kind of immature, like when a kid will say, "I don't love you" when they're mad even though you know it isn't how they really feel. They're just hurting so they want to say something to hurt you back.
Funny you should mention Romeo & Juliet, because Baz made a movie of that just before he did this one to round out the Red Carpet Trilogy. I LOVE the singing in this movie, my favourite being probably Roxanne. I just adore the arrangement on that, it was such an inspired choice to make it into a tango piece...
I'm so glad you rewatched it!!! I LOVE this movie, Ewan and Nicole killed it! Also definitely not excusing Christians actions but he did say hes never been in love before at the beginning of the movie, so maybe thats why he is so rude to Satine. Also this is a hot take but I don't think the musical on Broadway is anyway near as good as the original movie. The movie just had a special quality that only the early 2000s can encapsulate lol (also the fact that the musical got rid of Come What May reprise that Nicole sings to convince Ewan to come back, honestly I just have beef with the musical lol)
I agree that his reaction was 100% horrible, but we as the audience also had insight into her character that he didn’t. So he was reacting to what she said and did to him. Does that make it ok, absolutely not, but I also think it’s far to easy to judge someone else’s emotional reaction, especially when you empathize with the other party. We’ve all said and did things we are ashamed of in the heat of the moment. Unfortunately, it’s part of humanity and we learn and grow and usually get better at communicating with time. I also don’t agree that he wasn’t the right person to write the story, I think she would be happy with how he wrote it. But that’s just me. We all watch and respond to things through the lense of our experiences, so I understand that the way I saw things might not be how others saw them and that’s ok.
I have been waiting for so long for you to do this movie! Thank you so much!! I cant watch it anymore because I'm in love and the ending always emotionally destroys me for a whole week that my husband has said no more. But still. Thank you!!
The one thing that I would have changed about this movie is taking out the spoiler at the beginning of the movie that she dies. One of the first lines of the movie is "The woman I loved is dead" or something like that. Sure, it wouldnt have changed much: You still have all of her scenes dealing with and showing the battle with consumption, so early on most people would probably think "wait, is she going to die at the end?" and then, throughout the movie, a subplot of sorts to follow amongst the love triangle-esque plot is the "will she die/live" but I think it would have added even just a little more tension to the whole thing, and made her death at the end just that much more heartbreaking.
I do agree but I also like the spoiler because it has you rooting for them the whole time in the film hoping for a better ending or praying it ends differently than what he says happens.
I have seen Moulin Rouge once or twice, but your musical review is a good refresher! A movie I'd love to see you review is Sister Act 2. Movies about underdog school kids in a choir are always fun!
This is my actual favorite movie! Every little negative thing Hannah said stung, but I was so happy to see this come up on my recommended! I have the sudden urge to rewatch this movie for the millionth time! 😍😁
If you love Moulin Rouge and haven't already seen it, you have to check out Tessa Virtue and Scott Moir's Ice Dance routine to the soundtrack. Greatest routine ever and won them the Olympics in 2018! ❤️🔥
Hey Hannah! Happy to have you back. I'd love to see you react to Only Murders in the Building's 3rd season! It's got Meryl Streep, Paul Rudd, and of course Steve Martin and Martin Short. Such a great who done it series!
Yes! Not only it is a fantastic show, but Season 3 and its musical theme is perfect for a good TV/song reaction mix. “Look For The Light” is a genuine masterpiece outside of the show.
I never would've thought to see Obi Wan Kenobi singing about Aquamans mom😂😂 Btw please check out Epic the musical it's an incredibly underrated musical of the odyssey.
The "I paid my whore" scene is partially Christian acting, he isn't supposed to be in the play so he has to play it off to the audience, but he is obviously fueled by emotion as well. Coming from a woman's perspective, if I had just been devastating by the man I loved I would have a very similar reaction towards him that Christian had towards Satine. Honestly, if he hadn't reacted the way he did then Satine would not have sang their song and Christian would have gone on believing that she really didn't love him, she would have died and he would have never learned the truth.
Ewan McGregor singing in Moulin Rouge = instant chills
Ewan mcgregor doing anything is hottttt
YESSSS 😍😍😍
I had a huge crush on Ewan McGregor until he left his wife. I didn't think he would do that.
Obi Wan fucking KENOBI!
the "jealous man" scene is such an overused trope but its played so beautifully in this movie with Ewan choosing to approach it in an almost childlike way, being sheepish and apologetic because he was warned and knows he`s wrong to ask.
👏🏻 👏🏻 yes! this!
yes it is played in such a way, and it would almost be uncharacteristic of his character to not be concerned.
23:18 by cutting out Christian's scream of anguish you just saved me from a lot of tears
He really shines the brightest in this movie for me, Ewan. He acted his ass off and he SANG.
same
It gets me every time. I lost count of how many times I've seen this movie, it's my number one top favorite movie of all time, and it STILL gets me. 22 years later and it hits like the first time, every time.
To be honest I’m only partially here for the vocal analysis. I’m mainly here for Ewan.
Girl same
🙋🏻♀️ Me too 😂
Exactly
💯
That's totally fair. I'm here for Nicole. Little bit o' something for everyone in this movie. :D
My favorite part of this movie is that every time Ewan McGregor sings he gets that smile on his face like 'hey guys, look! I'm singing!' Also, this soundtrack was my entire personality for a hot minute.
It was mine too 🤣
So relatable 😂 My friends and I would belt out lyrics from Your Song and Elephant Love Medley at each other every time we got.
Me too. My highschool agenda was covered in pictures from this movie.
This movie made me aware of just how gorgeous his smile is.
Can we all agree that the Elephant Love Medley is one of the most iconic movie scenes ever
Yes, but also
✨Roooooooooxanne✨
I will accept no criticism of Ewan McGregor in this! 😂 He is perfect in every single way.
Mine too!!! It's definitely my favorite song of the show....so gutural and painfully beating
Also, the dance number is fire! I get chills when all the dancers are performing the Argentinian Tango in unison. It's an incredible number that highlights the over sexualized, often violent life Satine leads.
Agree, absolutely amazing and powerful!!!
To be fair, he did probably catch tuberculosis from Santine. They made out and sang face to face all the time, so he would have been continuously exposed from they met till she died.
Omg I never thought of that 😢 poor Christian.
Oh yeah he's definitely got to have been infected.
i really had no idea what she died from when i watched this when i was younger. damn
Also a quote:
"For many of us in India, it was a matter of pride that the country was being represented in a way that had nothing to do with slums and poverty. After all, Moulin Rouge! is a fantasy and India is part of that fantasy." - Mohita Mohan
Moulin Rouge throws a hyper-dramatic and colorful light on EVERY nationality, personality, occupation, and archetype it includes.
Absolutely one of my favorites
but why would she fool him if he's broke? what would the agenda be?
@@_bebeboudeur_ They answer that. They want his story/his writing for the show.
I think it's fair to say ladies, this is not what you are looking for. What makes for a dramatic scene is not what you want in real life 😂
Yes exactly, he was saying the words as scripted (we assume) @@circabooks4549
Who did not Fall in love with ewan, his Talent and his charming smile? 😁
Honestly not surprised he and Nicole had an affair during filming. Who wouldn’t fall in love with him?
I did ❤😍
I didn’t because I fell in love with Nicole Kidman 😊
His enormous talent...
He had me first in Star Wars. I saw this after. Instant place etched in my heart forever
I think we all understand what was happening. He was still a misogynistic asshole, no matter what he thought she did, lol. This was abusive.
@Rosannasfrieni dont think you understand what that word means
Jamie Bower's rendition of Johanna, omg chills every single time
Ewan's version is always going to be the best. nothing can top it. it gets me every time.
I completely agree Jamie's version is my favorite! Ugh so good!!!
Glad you're back and I hope all is well! If you're looking for more to watch and/or react to, how about Enchanted? Amy Adams and James Marsden understood their assignments and played their roles to perfection.
I loved watching James Marsden in Enchanted. He was the perfect blend of charming, oblivious and hilarious
The come what may reprise is one of the greatest musical moments of my heart. I loved seeing Hannah struggle so hard to not love that ending lol
Not Ewan McGregor playing two characters who fall in love with a character called Satine and then dying a tragic death. 😭
Every time he hits "Myyyyy gift of my song..." My heart skips a beat and I get goosebumps.
"She's singing her emotional ballad. It's just a girly thing we do" is me in a sentence thank you Hannah
me three, loved the validation
Come What May has me in a chokehold, especially the reprise(?) at the end. The call and response, the harmony, the HARMONY!!!! it gives me chills and it brings a tear to my eye every single time i hear it
Christian being the cutest, most lovable boyfriend throughout 99% of the movie. Then he makes one bad move cause he is deeply hurt, heartbroken and miserable.
Hannah: "I hate him, he is a jerk"
Welcome to the world of 2023....
You should definitely react to the Rocky Horror Picture Show one day!! It's camp, it's bizarre and has INCREDIBLE songs, you would loooove!
We read Camille in our theatre masters class in college (courtesan dying of consumption story similar in nature) and our professor said he had never seen this. We cancelled his planned class one day and made him watch this. Youre welcome Doc
They share the same source material!
I don't think anyone mentioned this yet in the comments, but all the singing is done live in this movie, no lip-syncing. The director wanted their genuine acting & voices so he had them do it all live. Makes the movie all the more enjoyable to me knowing it's live
So you're telling me that Moulin Rouge sounds THIS GOOD LIVE??? What was Les Mis excuse????
They may have sung live while filming but most of the audio is definitely the prerecorded audio. They probably did the live singing while filming so it would look genuine on camera but then used the recorded audio for the final product. There was a handful of times that a line or two of the live singing was used though.
@ginarainone1189 soooo very interesting!!!! Thank you!!! Love learning cool things like this! ❤️
Yeah, that's definitely not true.
@@Spirits-n-Giggles You should watch "Why Les Miserables (2012) is Worse Than You Think" by Sideways. He goes super in depth about the production and recording of the movie and how the director set up all the singers for failure. Its wild.
YES! THIS IS THE REACTION I HAVE BEEN WANTING FOR SO LONG!!! Hannah + _Moulin Rouge!_ = MATCH MADE IN HEAVEN!!!!
Ewan MacGregor was ROBBED of an Oscar for this movie.
You would LOVE Galavant. It makes fun of itself and the fantasy trope and the songs are so catchy!
I miss this show so damn much!
thank you for suggesting galavant! i hope more people react to it
Ewan enchants me with his singing voice every time I watch this movie, which has been numerous times. He just makes me swoon.
Ewan McGregor’s Come What May at the end is the best ❤
I SCREAMED WHEN I SAW THIS TITLE!!! THIS IS THE MUSICAL THAT TURNED ME INTO AN OBSESSIVE MUSICAL FANGIRL!!!! THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR DOING THIS!!! IT'S MY FAVORITE!!!
I love Ewan Mcgregor so much in this movie. So awesome!!
Same! Moulin Rouge was my gateway to musicals
I never thought Nicole Kidman had a strong enough voice to keep up with the other amazing actors in this movie...but over time learned to appreciate it. Still one of my all-time favorite movies!!
HANNAH, you NEED to hear Aaron Tveit sing "El Tango de Roxanne", I promise it will make your life better
YES I AGREE
I would love to see you react to the 25th anniversary of "The Phantom of the Opera" with Sierra Boggess and Ramin Karimloo !! 😊
YES!! That would be amazing!! Sierra and Ramin are 100% THE best Christine an Phantom to date imo. Their voices and chemistry are just absolutely breathtaking.
i stopped everything i clicked IMMEDIATELY OMG I'M SO EXCITED
YES REMAKE!
'Is that her...office space' 😂😂
I would 100% recommend going to see Moulin Rouge onstage, they are touring. I saw it and it was amazing. And they used some more updated songs too, they did a mix between the classic songs and new ones.

'Shatter' about the longing for freedom from being turned to stone by Medusa

Moulin Rouge was inspired in La Boheme, Rent has the same inspiration.
Rent came from La Boheme, yes, but Moulin Rouge came from La Traviata. Similar to Miss Saigon coming from Madama Butterfly.
Glad to have you back, Hannah! Hope you're doing ok💖
Would love to see a reaction to Dream Girls! Beyonce and Jennifer Hudson...possibly my favorite musical to movie adaptation 😍
OMG YES I SECOND THIS!!! Not to mention the phenomenal singing from Eddie Murphy, Jaime Foxx, and Anika Noni Rose!! Everyone absolutely KILLED IT in Dreamgirls!!
Would love to see you react to 'Come From Away'. Its just so good.
I played it on repeat as a kid and it ruined the original song for me because the vibe just fits so well the way they did it and the way ewan’s part just adds to it
The best song in the movie
Same!
Yesss El Tango de Roxanne never fails to give me chills. I was a little put out because she didn't talk more about it!
So happy that you are finally reviewing this! I saw the show’s national tour yesterday at my local theater and it was VERY good.
Looking back, I have to agree with Hannah. He was downright abusive, no matter what he thought she did.
@@patti-tb8ky9qn7s Changing it would have ruined the point of it all and made them coming back together less impactful.
He can still be mad but calling her those things was kind of disrespectful for me
Hannah, please react to Chicago! You would love it, the singing is amazing!!
i think it was that whole "you broke my heart that i must say this to get myself to hate you, but i still love you" style of movie that was super big around that time period. i remember watching that when iw as a preteen and loooooved it! loved the songs, had the soundtrack, watched it a lot lol, def red flags looking at it now, but that's the fun of show biz, it's all a story, not reality :) love ya! can't wait for the next video ^.^
I was so waiting for your thoughts of El Tango de Roxanne which is a masterpiece but it was so quick :( great video anyway !
I just watched moulin rouge yesterday, I cried and it was a really good movie
Especially Aaron Tveit’s opt up at the end of Roxanne 😍
@@aimeelyman4529 oh my gosh it gives me chills every time😩 I’ve watched the clip on repeat an embarrassing amount of times...
I would add the west end live clip with Jamie muscato singing it
what this is actually insane. so i watch binged your videos bcs you reacted to pitch perfect (i love pitch perfect) and burlesque. and i was thinking "has she reacted to moulin rouge yet?" AND HERE IT IS?!!!
Movie to watch: Chicago, Jersey Boys, Grease, Les Misérables, A Star is born, Mamma Mia, Sweeney Todd, Eurovision Song contest: a story of fire saga, The prom, Labyrinth
Animated movie: Anastasia
TV show musical: more Crazy ex-girlfriend, New girl, Schitt's Creek Alexis song
Show: the european Eurovision Song contest
This is my favorite movie of all time...I will always ugly cry at the end. I've never heard such a real and convincing sob, nothing compares to Ewan crying after she dies...makes me wonder what real life experience he had to internally tap into for that scene. Ewan and Nicole are amaaaazing together, visually and vocally. Such great chemistry.
Funnily enough, I also saw it for the first time at 13! It was my 13th birthday party...also a sleepover lol...France/Paris themed bc I was obsessed at that age. From the first time I watched it I was all about it. I showed it to my husband for the first time almost exactly a year ago and he said, "Wow...this is the most Madeline thing I've ever seen in my life." Biggest compliment IMO ahahah
I don't even blame Christian for being toxic...it's his first time in love, it's a WILD situation, he's lived a pretty sheltered and idealistic life before moving to France (at least that's what it seems like from the intro to the movie). I think everybody is a little toxic when they're burned by their first love. Just bc he's a grown man doesn't make that burn any less painful. Just my perspective in this *fictional* scenario. Do not condone toxicity in relationships lol
Please react to dreamcatchers album VillianS
Description:
Title track: OOTD, your Outfit Of The Day also serves as an expression of who you are today.
Girl I have never clicked a video so fast! Come what may was my first dance at my wedding so it makes me cry everytime🥲😍
Next time you're in New York, go see Moulin Rouge on Broadway. It's such a fun show!
Would love to see you react to Aaron Tveit singing El Tango de Roxanne... absolutely breathtaking
YES! AGREED!
But still. Thank you!!
Dear god, so happy you did this! I vividly remember watching this in the theater and it still is one of my favorite movies ❤
I owed EVERY mix bootleg cd of the soundtrack I could find. The grip this movie had on me!
I fell in love with Ewan McGregor from this movie simply because of his beautiful voice. I love it so much! How can you not swoon!?
YES!!
Yes 😁
yes I'd love her to react to "Look for the Light"!
Look for the Light is amazing, so is Steve Martin's patter song and Meryl amd Paul's duet ❤️
OMG I WAS THINKING ABOUT YOU REACTING TO THIS FOR AGES AND I JUST SEARCHED THE FILM UP AND YOUR VID WAS FIRST RECCOMENDED, YAYYYY
I’m soooo happy u finally reacted to this, one of my absolute favssss!!
That rasp in Roxane is iconic
AHHHH Hannah stoppp this is my favorite musical it is all i watched on repeat the summer before my freshman year i hope you love it
I never would've thought to see Obi Wan Kenobi singing about Aquamans mom😂😂 Btw please check out Epic the musical it's an incredibly underrated musical of the odyssey.
My favourinte musica movie ever.
I believe Ewan and Jim Sturgess sound very much alike when singing
Please do Across the Universe!!!
Never seen the movie, but love the musical with my whole heart! A reaction to the musical would be so cool!!!
I always love hearing Christina Aguilera’s riff at the start of “Sparkling Diamonds”
My first dance song at my wedding was Come What May. Our first date was star gazing and singing along to musicals. That’s a keeper!
