    I’m so happy you made this video. I’m one who feels monkeys should never ever be kept as pets, they have such complex needs & I agree with everything you said. They shouldn’t be bred or sold in captivity. With the exception of rescues/diminished populations of course.💗

      Lori’s Hartland Yeah, I feel there's a line between animals that do well being kept as pets, and animals that really shouldn't. Monkies and other primates definitely fall in the latter category.

      I agree with you very much! In my country it's so easy to find monkeys being sold as pets. And while they're waiting to be bought, they are kept (or should I say squeezed?!) in a small cage! It's so heartbreaking to see that. I wish I could do something about it, but sadly I don't think there is any animal sanctuary or rescue organization in my city (I live in the capital city of my country). :"(

    If only people would understand that because something is cute or entertaining to us it doesn't mean we should take them into our homes. Could you talk about the various parrots that also need the company of their own kind? I know you've touched on it, but perhaps a more in depth video?

    Thank you for tackling this issue in a way that all ages can understand, while being firm about your stance. I personally find it difficult to straddle the line between being honest and being kind, and I think I'll be sharing this video from now on, instead of trying to word it myself! Thank you for your contributions to the animal loving community and the lives of the animals you care for!

    I am okay with people having exotic pets for animals. So long as they are well taken care of and get all the time, attention, nutrition and medical care they need and deserve. If you want that cockatoo, go for it. But realize it needs a lot of care, fresh food, attention and mental stimulation for its life, and yours to be enjoyable. This is why it is imperative people do extensive research before getting a less-domesticated animal such as a bird or reptile. If you are not prepared to meet the needs of an animal for its health and well-being, then please, don't get it. I really loved this video and the answer she provided. I love this channel!

    Thank you SO MUCH for answering Tae'veon's question!! I don't know how we missed this video the first time it came out (we almost always watch Animal Wonders and SciShow Kids videos the moment they hit UA-cam), but somehow, I didn't see this video until a couple days ago. Tae was SO EXCITED that you chose to answer his question! His first grade teacher also decided to play the video for their whole class (and she was excited to be introduced to Animal Wonders).
    I really appreciate that you gave such a thoughtful and thorough response. Like a lot of young kids, Tae'von loves science -- has been interested in science since he was really little. (He's been watching SciShow kids videos since he was three.) I'm trying to keep encouraging that interest, and the desire to learn and ask questions more generally. I've found that it makes a HUGE difference when adults and professionals treat his questions and interest with respect, and that's something that Jessi does so well -- both here and on SciShow kids. Thank you for helping to educate him and encourage his interests -- and for all the other little ones out there that you're impacting.

      I hope Tae'veon continues to love and study animals. Science is very rewarding as a hobby even if it is not your profession, but if animals are his calling I wish the very best for Tae'veon to pursue a career in animal care!!

    This is how I feel about the monitors I’ve taken in, my water monitor lives in a 12’x6x4’ enclosure, with a heated and filtered 150 gallon pond, special uvb bulbs are $50 each, $400 for a misting system I’m easily $2000 into his enclosure alone. Is he super rewarding to care for? yes is it expensive and time consuming? Absolutely. Thanks for advocating on what good pets.

    Hi! This was a great video and very educational. I once worked abroad for college in a rehabilitation centre which must've had at least 20 common marmosets! Cleaning them was back breaking, and feeding them was nerve racking as they would reach out to scratch or even pee on you. I still love them though, I wouldn't have them as a pet but being so close to them while they are socialising and acting as they would in the wild is much more satisfying! : )

    Oh sweet boy! Do you know that even people who have rescued hundreds of animals can have a hard time with even cats and dogs? We have a kitty that was bottle fed from 3 days old. She came to be with us when she was less than a year. But because she didn’t have kitty sisters and brothers she doesn’t know how to talk cat or understand what other cats are saying with their body (like they are scared or mad). She’s as old as you! She’s six years old now and even though she lives with us and cats and dogs and is a beautiful cat she’s hard to take care of. She doesn’t know how to wash herself like other cats and because she didn’t have other cats when she was little she won’t let the other cats or dogs wash her. So even though she’s a cat, which is usually easy to give a happy life, we have to help her with things like washing her and helping her go potty every day. It can be really sad to help an animal that is unhappy.
    Can you imagine never being able to play with other kids or even your parents? Mimi is very lucky that someone who studied for years and years is able to take care of her, but it would be even nicer if she’d grown up with her family and had other marmoset friends.
    It sounds like you have lots of love to give and hopefully one day, when you grow up you can help dogs and cats, there are so many that will need you!
    We can see and love monkeys in documentaries about them or at zoos and sometimes, when things go really wrong we might be able to see a special animal in a rescue and education place like Animal Wonders. We’re very happy they ended up some place that can help them, but it’s kind of like a hospital. A hospital takes great care of kids, but if they’re there it means something happened that isn’t always nice. Keep loving animals! We need people with big hearts like yours and your mommy’s. Mua! (that’s a kiss from this Grandma on your forehead, maybe you and mommy can give each other that from me)

    I'm always impressed by how well you focus on education in your videos! I always worry with conversations about exotic pets that it immediately goes to judging people for their wants, taking the time to explain clearly the reasons why a certain animal would be more of a challenge than people want to put in as a pet is much more useful to the conversation and helps people who might want an exotic pet take a step to think about what they truly want. I love all sorts of animals but at the point I'm at in my life, struggling with depression and productivity, I know that I don't have the benefit vs effort ability to even own a cat yet. I hope to someday, but I know to be patient until I know I can give them the best life possible! In the meantime I can always volunteer to have some of the fun of animal companionship without the responsibility of an entire life

      Primates are wild animals and belong in the wild. I am a biological anthropologist. I studied human evolution and primatology in school. Keeping primates in private homes as pets is cruel and should not be done. Get a dog. They are domesticated and want to live with humans. Primates are not. Keeping primates as pets should be illegal. Unless you are keeping them in a rescue capacity you are a part of the problem. Also I think PETA is a terrible organization and I do not support them in any way. Primates AREN'T pets.

    Great video! I've been wanting a marmoset for a companion and I've been trying to research as best I can. What has been most helpful was talking to breeders and watching videos of former marmoset owners. It really isn't all sunshine and rainbows when it comes to bringing a marmoset into your life. I was thinking I should wait until I retire before getting a marmoset, but now I am rethinking that plan.
    Thank you for sharing this very important information. I hope Mimi continues to get all the care and affection she deserves.
    Keep up the good work, Jessi!

    This is so important because most people don't even know how to take care of a dog or cat properly and I don't mean their abusive, I mean they think a yard is exercise for their dog and that their cat sleeps all the time so it doesn't need to be played with. It's so important to thoroughly understand every animal and what they REQUIRE to live healthy and HAPPY. I love your answer to this question and I really hope it discouraged young viewers from finding monkeys to be a possible fun pet.

    Along with urinating and defecating anywhere they want, monkeys will also throw their own feces. As mentioned in comments below, if there's a monkey in the house, there's a very good chance the house is going to stink. The only way I would ever have a monkey in my home would be if I was rich; had lots of space for a monkey-friendly environment; could provide the constant and reliable care needed; if there were other monkeys so they could interact with each other as they're made to do, AND I would only have rescue monkeys that had no other place to go. I'd say monkeys aren't pets, they're more like disabled or special-needs people who need caregivers all their lives.

  • @melissasites1044

    Dear Mimi, as an animal lover I just want to comment you on an excellent job detailing for a child who loves animals, why a monkey would not make a good pet. I have a chihuahua at this time, and prior to owning a dog, I have had pet rabbits and pet gerbils. The difference between a dog and a more exotic animal is a lot! I had to spend a long time learning to understand the rabbits and gerbils, which was certainly very rewarding, but it was much easier to develop a shared language to communicate with the dog. This is even though rabbits and gerbils are domesticated pets. I enjoy observing the Marmoset in your video, and you made it easy to understand all the problems that would be involved in keeping her as a pet. I think maybe we envision having a monkey do tricks for us like in a movie. I bet trick monkeys are very difficult to train and that is most likely a full time job for that trainer!

    To see how monkeys can exist in a human space, one should go to Indian temples where they roam free. They are relatively calm there, used to humans, but not really interested by us. The humans leave food in the form of sacred offerings, and don't encroach their territory. Usually the monkeys will not bother people in return.

      @nyxredfern5042 6 років тому +8

      What are you feeding your leopard gecko normally? How tame is he?
      Might be worth seeing if he'll respond to tap training (assuming he's being feed enough) where you tap the outside of his tank twice before feeding him so he learns taps mean food, no taps means handling/cleaning/water change etc.
      He might also just be curious, or knows you feed him so he's reacting to you being there.

      Hey I'm not sure if this will work with leapard geckos but with other lizards I heard a good trick is to put a piece of clothing you've worn for a day into the tank. This allows the reptile to get used to your scent so it isn't jarring when you come to feed them or hold them.
      My GF has a leapard gecko and he was very skittish at first. What we did was gently try to hold him every few days but we wouldn't play with him. Just place him on an open palm and let him sit until he was fed up and put him back. Now he's much more comfortable. When I say gentle I mean really gentle. Put your hand in super slow and stay still. Let him get used to it. Then slowwwwly pick him up and then just let him sit on you.
      Another tip is don't close your hand around him when you hold him. Flat surfaces, flat palm, arm, leg whatever. Just don't close your hand over top of him. That stresses them out. This was the only way we managed to my make GFs leapard gecko ok with being held so that we could tame him.

    • @animalwondersmontana
      @animalwondersmontana  6 років тому +3

      Riley R Some people enjoy caring for animals that don't reciprocate affection, the act of caring for them is substantial enough. That's not the majority though, and it's important to understand and have appropriate expectations when entering into a situation where you're responsible for another being's health and happiness. Many reptiles live 20-30 years, which is a long time to consistently provide an animal an environment in which they can thrive. It's a big commitment, but not impossible. Which is why I qualify my statements that certain animals don't make good pets and others can make good pets for some people.

      Do some research into the pros and cons of clipping wings (from the bit of research I did, it comes down to clipped birds being less likely to fly off and are more calm, but it's pretty unnatural for a bird to be unable to fly and can make them stressed out if they can't fly off when they need to. A clipped bird can still glide around, they aren't completely land locked) before making a decision but there are definitely ways to ensure the safety of an unclipped bird. Making sure they are locked in their cage when unsupervised and having a bird proofed room for them to free fly in are great. Budgies can also be trained to come to you, which can be helpful if they manage to slip out of the bird proofed room.
      [One issue I have heard with wing clipping is that it's dangerous to the birds because they can still fly, kind of, but lose a lot of ability to control themselves and can end up in dangerous situations because of it]

      Letrell Disney I personally own a cockatiel and my sister owns a budgie. Personally I wouldn't clip their wings, especially since they're small birds. Yes, that means they can fly away from you. But the thing is, with birds, you need to build a trust bond. This is done by, for example if you just got them, sitting in front of the cage and talking to them in a calm voice. After doing that a few days, put your hand on the side of the cage (on the outside) and hold it there for 5 minutes, then put it on the other side for 5 minutes. Do that for a few days. How long these steps take depends on the personality of the bird. My bird was pretty easy to tame and a total sweetheart while my sister is still bonding with hers, it's going well, just pretty slow. After you did the previous step and your bird doesn't move away from your hand when on the outside, you're going to hold your hand in the cage, don't try to touch the bird, just hold it there for 5 minutes. Do this for a few days. After that, put some food in your hand and hold it in front of the bird, not too close, but in reach. Eventually your bird will eat out of your hand. Keep doing that for a few days. After that it's time for your bird to learn to step onto your finger. There are a lot of videos on this. I recommend ones from The Parrot Whisperer. If any of these steps fail and your bird isn't ready for them yet, don't hesitate to go back to a previous step. It's all about trust, remember that.
      Hope I was able to help and good luck with your bird.

      Letrell Disney I think bird wings shouldn't be clipped. There are situations where it can actually be for the well being of the bird that we do clip them, like dangers inside the house or a behavioral problem in the bird. Although, if clipped for specific reasons, it should always be done with the goal of solving the said problems and flight training the bird later on.
      If the bird is flighted, it's also important to flight train them. Which means to make the bird practice different flying situations, mainly flying from the ground up, from up to the ground and in a straight line. A clipped bird is less confident and more nervous. It's also very hard for a bird to have enough exercise without flying, which has a negative impact on both physical and mental health.
      Also, if a bird has a strong bond with you, it's not going to want to fly away from you. When it does happen (and it can happen even with clipped wings) it's a brief moment of impulsiveness or fear that makes the bird fly away. Although it's only a matter of minutes before the bird will want to come back to you. And the problem with birds that are not flight trained is that they won't know how to come back and you're gonna lose them for ever. With a flight trained bird, there's a significant chance that he's going to come back.

Her friend apparently thought it would be cool and fun to have a chimpanzee as a pet. It's a great example of why primates belong in the wild, and not in people's houses.

      I don't actually want to google that, but I'm gonna guess what happened: Chimp got euthanized because it was "aggressive" and "posed a danger" and similar bullshit, and the owner got a $500 fee.
      Isn't that how these things usually go?

    • @hamsterama
      @hamsterama 6 років тому +4

      +Alex S. Yes, you might not want to Google it if you don't have a strong stomach. Forget pictures - Even reading a description of the events on the Wikipedia page will make your stomach churn. Anyway, what happened was a lot worse than your guess. The chimp opened the door of a responding police cruiser, and the officer promptly shot and killed the chimp in self-defense. The officer was fine. But the victim, Charla Nash, was badly mutilated. The chimp's owner died a couple years later of a brain aneurysm, probably from the stress of the whole thing. Joshua Walker in the comments above mentioned that the chimp was drugged. That's correct. The owner gave him Xanax. She was raising the chimp as if he was a human, and couldn't handle it when he was acting like, you know, a chimp.

      Look on youtube. People having a fox made videos and they do show why.
      Foxes unlike dogs are not even pack animals, like with some breeds of dogs a fox needs 12 hours of work unlike a retriever it will not sleep most of the day and be easily motivated by food.

      Question you saying a lot of people, who are these people? Second have you experience having a monkey as pet? We should always talk about our own experience rather than other people says.
      I worked as a volunteer in a Sanctuary. You know how many Monkeys ended in those places (if they are lucky) every year?
      Just do your own research, go to Wildlife animals Sanctuaries, and see with your own eyes, what really happened with Pet monkeys and other wild animals in the US alone.
      First at all monkeys not chimpanzees because chimpanzees are apes. Monkeys were poached from the Mothers to bring them to US. You said the live better life in captivity because in the wild they will killed. Well their born to live in the wild, their DNA was made to live in their danger and they are happy to live there, because that have been always been mother nature intention.
      We shouldn't impose our ideas of "caring" to other creatures. If we care about then we let them be who they are and let them stay where they belong.
      2. Training a monkey required a lot of time, not a few minutes or days, required years.
      You said diapers is the solution for not peeing anywhere? Well sadly diapers has a lot of side effects in the physical well being of a monkey. First at all they damage the movement of their tales. Second you have to be changing that diaper frecuently because they poo and pee a lot. Pee is also a way to mark territory. So if they are not frecuently change they get rash in their genitals causing them suffering.
      When monkeys get to the puberty age, they get aggressive and taming them cause them a mental distress, ending up attacking their owners or family and friends.
      We should also think in the well being of the monkey rather What we think is good for them.
      Please visit Sanctuaries and look how the majority of Monkeys fate meet.
      You know people cut their teeth in order to keep them as pet? Do you know they cut their tales in order to made them wear diapers? Do you know many of them died prematurely because people feed them with inadequate diets with people food, allowing them to developed diabetes and heart diseases?
      Do you know that some of them ended shot by their owners or the police because the turned mentally unstable, that they have attacked some members of the owners family or neighbors?
      Wild life animals shouldn't be pets and if we really care about them we should contribute to Conservation wild animals around the world, helping them to make these animals a better life where they belong in the wild.

    So I have a question. I'm hoping to get a lovebird sometime in the near future, but the only space I'd really have is my room. I know you're not supposed to interact with them much when you first get them so that's why I'm worried my room might not be the most ideal, but the only space I have in my living room is where I put my lizard, which would leave the bird on the floor causing the dog to bug it. So is it alright for the bird to be in my room? Or should I try and figure something else out?

    • @nyxredfern5042
      @nyxredfern5042 6 років тому +4

      If you put the bird in your room, be sure to get an Air Filter and clean often! Extended exposure to the dust birds produce can cause you to develop bird fancier's lung.
      As for first bringing it home, just try to make the bedroom as quiet a space as you can and stay out of the room when possible. If you put the bird in the living room, you'd probably still be walking by the cage when you first bring it home. It's pretty much unavoidable short of stuffing the bird cage in an unused closet (please don't do that).
      P.s. Do not put the bird on the ground near the dog. That will stress the bird out.

      419 Wayward Kid* I have had my bird in my room since I got him. What you're saying is partly true, you do indeed need to leave the bird alone for a bit when you first get them, but I think you're overestimated the amount of time. It's perfectly fine to start interacting with your bird the next day. I did it with my bird and he's a sweetheart and very cuddly. You need to show them you're going to be part of this bird's life and that you're a positive influence. You're going to be the one feeding him and taking care of him and loving him. It's very important to interact with the bird very early on. It took me 5 days for my bird to from "stay away" to getting him to step up with the promise of millet, and that was this Christmas morning. I have now taught him to fly to me and come with me during my regular daily activities.

    • @christianrichard9029

      419 Wayward Kid* my budgies did perfectly fine adjusting in my bedroom. As long as you don't make loud noises for the first few weeks, you should be fine. I would say take it slow, but lovebirds are quite quick to take to their human, but id still take my time. They're sweet birds and do great with human interaction if you know how to read their body language. It's perfectly fine to start working with your bird 2 or 3 days after you get it. I suggest starting with resting both hands on the side of the cage for 5 minutes on the first two days. Then 10 minutes the next two. After that move one on top of its cage and rest it there for 10 minutes for a couple of days. After that. You can start putting your hand in the cage for five minutes, then ten, then fifth-teen and then twenty. By then he should be comfortable enough to start eating from your hand. And after 3 or four days of that, start trying to teach him to step up, and offer him a treat when he does. Food goes a long way with birds. As long as you're patient, everything should go fine. Hope this helps :) good luck.

    Lock that place up tight and then enjoy my safe deer. Or trail riding with my fourlegged kiddo.
    That or get a crested gecko.
    The deer is a dream I have because whenever I saw one as a kid it was like seeing the face of the Gods.

      nele bes I'm not an expert, but if Mimi is not well socialised and lacks the skills to interact with other monkies, she wouldn't have the skills to care for and live with a baby. That would be very unfair to the baby, plus I imagine rescues are rather rare to find.
