I remember seeing this in a completely random, dark and smokey arcade back in the 90's. I didn't know what the game was called back then. The text was all Japanese. Brings back memories seeing it again after all these years.
I'm pretty sure that 1991's Mutant Fighter was a stealth sequel to this. Notably, Pon the Giant (renamed Pon the Hercules) is one of the playable characters in that. (As I was typing this post up, I went to check that, and I'm wrong - Mutant Fighter is *explicitly* the sequel to Hippodrome, even though the fighting style is entirely different)
Thanks for the info, I never heard of it, but after watching the longplay, I'm like 90% sure it was supposed to be a wrestling game but after they couldn't secure the WWF license or maybe they just thought the game wasn't fun enough, they replaced all the wrestler sprites with monsters and went with the Hippodrome sequel. Either way, that was entertaining. So sad there wasn't an actual Hippodrome sequel, with weapons etc.
I have been looking for this on UA-cam! I used to play this at the laundromat when I was in college. I remember it was being called “Gladiator” at the time. Maybe I was wrong.
I love these sorts of games. They're not fighting games, but puzzles in which you have to figure out how the enemy behave. Well here, not so much, but there are some ideas
Oh, wow. This game was in a local pizza shop when I was a kid. And the best part, it was free. One of the few arcade games I got to the end because I had unlimited continues. I was thinking about this game a few weeks ago, but couldn't remember the name of it. And lo and behold, this came up in my recommendations. As soon as I saw the thumbnail, I recognized the game.
So "the Kingdom, Queen, and a life of peace are yours..." so wth every year the Queen gets a new sidechub? Damn this Queen's a playa. I wonder what her inevitable kids think XD
Gran: A Gargoyle gets in a fighting game over two decades before Firebrand in Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3. Steve: Feared Assassin. Pon: "Who here remembers Rygar?"
Ah yes, the dreaded lizard man gladiator, "Norfolk," majestic dragon "Sharon," and terrifying assassin "Steve." Truly the most fearsome of all warriors. I'm sorry, I can't take a final boss that BELCHES when you hit him seriously. Also, anyone else think the Lamia's kind of a babe? Can you play as her?
It's always a bit amusing when you can guess the game's developer by their sound fonts, like picking out rock musicians by the way their guitars sound.
My favorite trick was against the scorpion man. If you timed it just right when he spat gum, your sword would be extended and he'd impale himself on it.
I played a different version of this game, titled 'Fighting Fantasy'. Maybe i'm not remembering it well, but the dragon was much more difficult, using its dragon's breath non-stop at various speeds, and also launching a flying fireball occasionally. I remember it being the most difficult enemy not counting the final boss. An oddity was that Pon the giant wasn't rendered at all, only his weapon. The game played normally but the boss was invisible (making it much more difficult because you couldn't see his shoulder charges). Maybe the board hadn't enough memory or something like that.
Yo siempre ignoraba este juego pensando que seria un juego de apostar a un caballo y verlo correr una carrera, ahora veo como es y le voy a dar oportunidades jugandolo. XD
Good friggin grief this was ear rape! Hilarious as balls though. Steeve the Assassin and Pon the Giant. That being said, I kinda like the idea. Imagine this game in the vein of No More Heroes - wherein you go to different arenas to defeat foes culminating in you fighting these creatures who have been terrorizing different nations. Insert a story of these creatures having been created by the Kingdom's evils and Bob's your uncle.
Probaly they both refer to the same preexisting mythological chinese dragon. Dragon in japanese in 'ryuu', and 'long' in chinese. That 'long' is pronounced as 'ron' by japanese speakers. 'Shen' is chinese for 'divine' or 'god' (japanese 'Shin'), probably 'Sha' is just a misspelling (or a pun!)
Cawnus and Norfolk can be beaten this way. The others... not so much. But you are going to take some damage, and that's not good in this game, because that affects the fight money you earn and you need all the money you can take from previous fights to buy weapons and health (you don't heal to full after a battle)
Moron didn't hit the Lamia's tail, that's damage he was wasting right there. Gargoyle is super vulnerable to down stabbing attacks. That and the spikey mace and he's two shottable. I do appreciate how he played against the Armor Dragon, he's a random pool of suck with all the fireballs and such.
Boss list:
00:00 Intro
00:24 Boss 01 Cawnus (Lamia Noble)
01:16 Boss 02 Gran (Gargoyle)
02:02 Boss 03 Norfolk (Lizard Man)
03:02 Boss 04 Sharon (Armor Dragon)
03:59 Boss 05 Daldnoa (Scorpion Man)
04:44 Boss 06 Solomon (Wizard)
05:36 Boss 07 Charry and Steve (Assassins)
06:54 Final Boss - Pon (Giant)
08:45 Ending
Lamia: you can duck and hit her tail when she attacks with it.
World Of Longplays play this game
I have learned today that wizard is a race and not a profession.
Same for assassin.
In some settings they pretty much are with magic bloodlines being such a big thing.
Their natural habitat is airbrushed on the sides of vans that smell of illicit substances.
Wizard life matters
Well I mean if Dwarf can be a class then why can't Wizard be a race? :V

it was named Fighting Fantasy in Japan, actually.
The fearsome and terrible dragon....Sharon.
"Dragon's Breath"
The fearsome assassin, Steve
She is married to Ozzy.
You mean Karen 🤣

Watching the gameplay and the enemies design I immediately thought so too (I have never seen this game at our arcade at the time, only Mutant Fighter)

The "Haaah'" followed by the Mexican restaurant-like cheering was the absolute best lol
The Giant is literally a Fist of the North Star reference
Rygar got swole
One could say it's a *giant* reference, eh?
Laugh now
Cassandra live for ever........ bruh
@@Robeebert Totally Rygar!
All must fear the Assassin named Steve.
And the only assassin Steve would ever fear is Charry
Or a giant named pon

Love how the Magician sounds like he's drunk and only half-remembering the spells and the "assassins" just rush headlong at the player, lol.
So "the Kingdom, Queen, and a life of peace are yours..." so wth every year the Queen gets a new sidechub? Damn this Queen's a playa. I wonder what her inevitable kids think XD
Wait... exactly what race is the Queen, and would she be okay with any of the contenders?
You damn right! And next year, I’m gonna be her new plaything!! 😤
@@0utrunner237 Wonder how it worked for the Queen, due to Pon the Giant being the previous champion.
@@osakatales9228 she enjoyed it
LMAO! What if the dragon had won..🤔
Daldnoa with the eardrum-piercing "WEHWEHWEHWEH" death sound effect. The SFX are at master levels of jank in this game.
Gran: A Gargoyle gets in a fighting game over two decades before Firebrand in Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3.
Steve: Feared Assassin.
Pon: "Who here remembers Rygar?"
The final boss is just Uighur from Fist of the North Star. Even the shoulder attack is the same.
Also the Twin Paradises are The Shura's Sha and Zhan from Fist of the North Star
@@kuugarx100 Damn
Thanks for uploading this. I remember playing it ages ago but couldn't remember the name.
Norfolk really doesn't work as a lizardman name.
I dunno...I live in Norfolk, Va....it’s scores of lizard men here 😂😂😂😂
Reminds me of Sword Master, kind of.
Man of culture I see
I like how DEAD is plastered over the challengers
Fight Money?
Now we know Balrog will want to go. He loves that stuff
They should have a warning about there being no actual hippos.
I see why Capcom won the fighting game race. I like how Pon the giant belches every time you hit him, though.
Sharon...SHARON THE ARMOR DRAGON?!
ファイファンうますぎ!こんなに上手い人見たことない!
Pon sounds like he's "burping" himself to death.

Whoa, I completely forgot about this game. I do remember beating it back in the day but not a no hit run.
*"Hello there! Very well done!"*
Next level footsies! Gr8 gameplay
"HAAAW!"
I've been played tones I've been watched tones of gameplays and there are still games I don't know
Old school game like this I enjoy it's too bad We don't get to play on today's consoles
King No Damage Channel 👍
I don't know. I'm pretty sure that Gladsheim and Abyss we're the only bosses.the others we're just regular stages.
The music in this game is very "Data East".
and the sound effects too. It is a Data East game.
The assassins and Giant are Fist of the north star reference!
The final boss is constantly burping
It's always a bit amusing when you can guess the game's developer by their sound fonts, like picking out rock musicians by the way their guitars sound.
I swear that giant character was modeled after Uighur from Fist of the north star
got reminded of Sword of Sodan
Bruh Solomon has the text to speech voice
My favorite trick was against the scorpion man. If you timed it just right when he spat gum, your sword would be extended and he'd impale himself on it.
Was I the only one disappointed that the actually very cool looking Armor Dragon didn’t do very much?😣

What in the fucking world was that gargoyle yell??!! Shit made me jump back and do a double take.
3:40 Sharon: this is fine
perfect!!
The Gargoyle is literally Summoned Skull
4:02 Reminds me of those Stingers from Neverwinter Nights: Shadows of Undrentide.
Show's how little effort some manufacturers put into their product
this games needs a remake
That last boss sounded like he drank too much soda
Pretty basic, but pretty great 👍

Do Tiny Toon Adventure (NES) All Bosses (No Damage) pls
The assassin's name is...Steve?
Charry and Steve? Master assasins or work in HR department?

I Do Defeated Scorpion Man But I Never Defeated Old Wizard
Even in 2020 he takes no damage.
Snake is cute.
Final boss burps instead of moaning, lol
