Need to watch this! I’ve had an issue with cool/greenish skin tones, notably in skin tone shadows. This has been an issue for others as well. Disabling Quick a start has fixed it, but it’s slightly annoying because I have to wait for the TV a to turn on every time. Other than that I’ve been really happy with it. Grabbed the 50 inch for under $400 before the Super Bowl.
Thanks for the in depth review. You have taken the time to provide a review after the updates. I own Lg basic tv's and use the fire stick, in Canada the Fire OS provides access to the major canadian channel tv apps. As a result I do not require a second cable box. Not sure if Roku does in Canada. I always use the Fire stick as a result. My concern is on the life span of TCL tv's, it is clear from the comment section your TV is working fine 6 months later with the Roku streaming stick. Thanks again for the unbiased review it is refreshing.
Nice. Good review on display test. Most reviews are shallow with words such as "this is really nice". "This looks great!" I test and calibrate every display I purchase. And thank you for including the display test!

Just bought the 55 inch version of this google tv for 400. Very pleased with it. I didn’t want to stray from my previous Roku tv but the google tv isn’t bad. This is basically the series 6 with a couple small differences and a MUCH cheaper price tag

@@faithstormer1976 the 55 is still a respectable 440, most games don’t do 120 on ps5 so I don’t think I’ll break the bank for a big tv yet. Btw that’s crazy man but at 200 it’s a steal no wonder they sold out so fast
Update - so after near 3 weeks I went to the account management menu and selected only "APPS" feature for the home screen. The TV's software was very heavy on promoting movies, shows and other items for viewing. In fact there were 18 banners under the my apps banner for apps that I installed. Each of the 18 banners has 50 thumbnail icons displaying available content from various streamers. As a result the total thumbnails was 900. Now when I turn on the TV all I see is "My APPS" which is all I need. Previously every time the TV either was turned on or selected back to home screen the banners were reloaded. I did a count for the 800 number as time is available due to covid quarantine.
This has improved the overall speed of the TV when navigating from one stream service to another. However the hidden banners may still be in memory.
Hope this helps others who noticed Google TV's is a bit slower than LG TV's.
Today I installed the PLEX app in Canada, previously this was not available for Canada. Lots of content and credible business news networks.

Did you ever test watching old DVD's on it? Seen reviews saying that's a problem, wonder if it's fixed by now. Been researching picking out a new TV for my brother to buy 75-85 inches and have been watching your videos. Recent subscriber! Keep up the great job.
I haven’t owned a DVD in over 10yrs and stream every now, most companies don’t support them anymore because the resolution is too low to make new TVs look decent. Consider looking for movies on service like Tubi, Freevee you get commercials but they support new TVs better. Thanks for the sub👍🏽
Hello Steve thanks for all your reviews. Here is my final update regarding the TCL 65s546 released in late 2021. I recently unplugged the firestick 4K Max from the HDMI input at the TV's ports. I proceeded to connect the firestick to the Yamaha 109 HDMI in port. The Earc port on the TCL tv remains connected to the HDMI Arc / out port at the Yamaha 109 soundbar. All issues have been eliminated. The audio sync isssue for the TCL tv is no longer. The inability for the TCL to connect to audio device no longer occurs. I spoke to a couple of local techs and they noted I was experiencing a protocol issue. Simply, the TCL tv was first in line as the HDMI ports I was using are on the TV. The firestick was interfering with audio protocols over the HDMI ports. The Yamaha 109 soundbar has 4K passthru for the HDMI connection. However over the past week I no longer feel the need to use the firestick. The TV's apps all function properly and to the naked eye I feel the screen clarity is slightly improved by only using the TV's apps. TCL did not provide me with this resolve they had instructed me to disconnect the soundbar from the TV. Anyway this will be my last update for a now obsolete TV (fingers crossed).
Update came thru today not sure what it affected. I think the audio section of settings had a major change in options for selecting which speakers are on , headphones Combo with TV speakers. Even bluetooth option. Possibly I missed this prior but I never accessed that menu with 6 options for audio sound. I have trried everything even a reset of my Pioneer VSX-530 receiver with no luck to get the HDMI & CEC functions to operate as expected. Receiver is 7 years old. Pioneer receiver manual does note that HDMI feature may not function. Articles on the internet desrcibe Pioneer as having a unique protocol for their HDMI parameter. I did connect the TV to the receiver's bluetooth option with no issues and no audio sync lag. I did get a cable error message but cable does work elsewhere. Today connected the Firestick mounted on the TCL TV to the Alexa home theatre with two Echo 4th Generation speakers. Wow impressive. Very nice music audio as well. No longer need the receiver, I guess?

Just bought this t.v Rocu edition 65 inch for 528 . How can you beat that for great picture. This t.v got to be the best budget looking t.v on the market. It's fantastic watching HDR 4k movies in the Dark
My first two flat panel tv's were both Samsung (46" and a 32") and they operated and still do operate very well being now 10 and 8 years old. The next set I bought was a larger 60" Vizio that was constantly needing the remote re-programmed and constantly losing it's channel memory, needing rescans, etc. I soon got rid of that tv and got a 65" Samsung to replace it with and I'm very happy with it. I recently replaced my 32" Samsung bedroom set with a 43" one. I almost bought the TCL one that size for 100 dollars less, but having been burned by that Vizio and having heard a couple years ago how shoddy TCL tv's were I went ahead and shelled out the $318.00 for the Samsung 4K Crystal UHD TU7000 43". I don't play video games so that's a moot point for me. The remotes with my new Samsung sets look just like the ones from 10 years ago so I don't need any backlighting as after all this time I have all the buttons memorized by feel where they are. While the TU7000 is a smarttv, I still have my Roku hooked up to it simply because the navigation is faster.

I now have completed all Google 11 updates and activated the "TV" selection on my receiver to HDMI. All is fine Regarding picture it is amazing. Just tested the movie The Prey on DISNEY in Canada. This is super both Dolby Vision and Atmos . Also tested sunny beach video on UA-cam in 4 K. Best picture I have ever seen.

What do you mean by "activated the tv selection on your receiver to hdmi?
@@rhsalce I selected the receivers input for tv which means audio is directed to the receiver from the tv. As opposed to blue ray or tuner or Bluetooth. the receiver also had to be programmed to HDMI as opposed to an optical cable from the tv. This was performed by accessing the online manual from Pioneer. Pioneer has a very easy step by step process to activate HDMI audio thruput from a tv. Possibly this is specific to the Pioneer brand. It took 4 steps in the Pioneer menu to activate HDMI and the CEC control function. In the end I sold the receiver and purchased a Yamaha soundbar. Less programming required. Plug and play. No manual required. Purchased a 35 foot cable which let us position the soundbar close to the seating. A 2.0 HDMI cable is what tcl techs informed I needed. TCL tv also recognized the Yamaha soundbar immediately. The Pioneer the tcl tv and the fire stick were problematic as well when all connected. Once again a modern soundbar eliminated all problems. Hope this helps.
Great video. What are the settings that you would recommend for getting the best balance/contrast/picture? I know lots of folks say movie mode but the skin coloring does appear off in it (too yellow).

Update, contacted TCL support and they were excellent. Discussed the appropriate HDMI cable technology required. An HDMI 2.0 cable is required. That has resolved the issues with the Pioneer receiver. I have ordered a Yamaha YAS 109 soundbar with Alexa to replace the Pioneer receiver. Even with the HDMI 2.0 cable the TCL TV remote still does not power on the receiver. The only capable remote to ever power on the receiver is the Firestick 4K remote. The Firestick remote is the only remote that has demonstrated success for power on/off for any TV, receiver or soundbar I have ever aligned with the Firestick technology. Even the LG magic remote, vintage 2020, will not power off my LG soundbar. Yes soundbars do power off after 5-10 minutes of inactivity. Firestick 4K has a perfect score for HDMI CEC control.

I bought this tv 8 days ago, BEWARE! I'm already having issues with turning it on and getting sound but a black screen. Now that I've been researching the problem I see a TON of other buyers are having the same issue. So far all I need to do is turn it off and then back on again but I have a feeling it will get worse, glad I bought Best Buys 2 year warranty.

Update for HDMI connection. I finally contacted a local private retailer who tested my new Yamaha YAS-109 soundbar. They deemed it defective out of the box. Yamaha SB is now returned and working as expected. After this I am still content with the quality of the Yamaha SB as it has Alexa built in and it works very well. I use an HDMI 2.0 cable as TCL indicates that is required from their support team. Tried with a 1.4 HDMI cable and connection was awkward. 2.0 cable allowed immediate control of soundbar as expected. The TV works very with well designed APPS. I have downloaded the PLEX APP which has many USA news networks which are all crystal clear. Unfortunately, Canadian APPS, CTV and Global TV Canada cannot compare to the USA designed APPS. If you are in Canada do not fault the TV. Compare it against Stations available from the PLEX APP. You will be surprised. Last I noticed that if I turn off the all APPS feature for the home screen it also turned off the Google voice assistant. I contacted TCL support to let them know. I preferred to limit my home screen on startup to only the APPS I installed. The all APPS function brings in over 500 thumbnails of movie and show selections. Not a big deal but nice to have Google voice assistant on occasion. Thanks for all your work Steve.
What's the difference between the 55S546 is it the same features as the 65S546 I asked because the 55 is on sale for $199 and I was going to put it in my bedroom because I have a Samsung 65 in my living room and you told me that TV was excellent and it is a good TV that's the reason I got it when you talk about TVs you do tell me it's a good TV

Purchased the TV today at Best Buy Canada. Will arrive in 2 weeks. I will provide a comment on my experience with setting up the TV. We will however continue using a Firestick 4K. Need it for the Canadian networks. Peace - Steve -

Tech Steve what do you think, LG 60uq8000 vs this tcl but 2022 model
I have owned the tv for 14 weeks. I will now confirm that I would choose the Roku operating system over the google OS as the unit I own has minor nuances. I have never encountered these nuances with my previous 6 HD/4K smart tv's. What I experience is slower connectivity and response to remote control actions. Yes, I do a restart for the tv once per week upon observing the sticking or freezing of an app. The unit does not coordinate 100% of the time with a 4k fire stick. I also connected a 2.0 HDMI cable to a soundbar. It actually takes 15 seconds for the audio connection. The message displayed on screen is "audio device connected" after 15 seconds. This is not a deal breaker but another branded tv connects to that soundbar in 1 second. That tv uses a 1.4 HDMI cable. Both cables are certified.
In addition when scrolling the screen to select a program for viewing the action is slower than the fire stick or native OS of our other tv. We have never required a restart for that tv in 30 months. It is also a pain not to include a pause and play action button on the remote. Yes I can request hey google pause or play tv. Yes I was accustomed to a deluxe remote on the other tv.
In summary the nuances remind me of yesteryear computers that had to be restarted a couple of times per week to permit a memory clearing reboot.
The tv's picture sharpness and nice color display offsets the nuances. The pricing available in August has not been repeated even during the early black month sales. Happy shopping and ensure the tv and the remote can be tested and compared to non Google OS tv's.

@@InterestingWorldLove the Roku version has better remote. Also updated system techwise. Roku version is 2022. The google version was released in early Nov 2021. Pretty similar more or less. Roku version may have voice remote as well, pretty convenient when looking for a show on the many streamers that carry shows. I bought the google version in August in Canada for $650 cdn. Walmart just had Roku version for $600 cdn. Maybe Walmart USA will provide a nice price. Google software a little slow as all UA-cam reviewers mention. Mine takes 15 seconds to connect to soundbar that I ran a 35 foot HDMI cable to. That was my preference as I sit almost 18 feet back. Tv is super nice however. I use a fire stick which has a pause, play and easy fast forward along with voice remote. Fire stick technology still super hardware to operate any tv and less than 35$ for the 4k version. Good luck.

@@InterestingWorldLove You will be pleased no Google interface and a nice remote with all control functions. I found that the Google interface launches 800 thumbnails for shows/ movies. Yes I counted them by row and units per rom. That is possibly causing lag. If your PC had 800 thumbnails on the startup screen it would be slow.

Do you know how to fix the motion when it goes into Dolby vision if you go into settings during a movie it disables it and i sometimes have to stop the app or turn off the tv. It’s a bug the tv seems to have.

It is now two weeks in and picture quality for Google OS Apps such as Diney, You Tube and Amazon Prime look better than the Firestick OS Apps that are from the same streamer. Not sure why, I do not possess test instruments to verify. My Pioneer receiver 2015 - 2016 is a problem however. It does pass thru sound over HDMI but CEC controls are iffy. Pioneer receivers do not follow the structure for HDMI & CEC that other manufacturers incorporate into their systems. Now I know this. Anyway I will be purchasing a TCL basic soundbar - the Alto 8i.
Last the remote is fine but does not compare to LG's Magic Remotes. The Google OS still lacks very direct actions for audio and speaker selection of internal or external by optical etc. By comparison TCL Roku Tv OS has clear selections for audio selection. This I have observed on UA-cam reviews. Considering I received a major discount I will accept the audio selection discounts. Amazing picture for basic QLED. Yes the "Hey Google" command function is working fine thus far as it will switch inputs for viewing. Firstick still operates however certain switching functions no longer work by voice command. Possibly I will contact TCL support to understand this concern.

Hello Steve, Issues this week trying to connect EARC from TCL to a new soundbar. Soundbar is the Yamaha YAS 109. The soundbar was released nearly 3 years ago but had all features we wanted, Alexa, wifi and built in subwoofer. Just curious if there is a spec I need for thi sconnection. It has been finicky. Initially the TV recognized both the 4K firestick and the soundbar in the settings menu. all appeared fine except no sound would emit. Anyway spen an Hour with TCL support, 5 HDMI cables and unplugging all items and draining power. Sent long support request to both companies. Whhat soundbar is used in this video? Are you allowed to mention it?

Hey Steve ,, new sub here. im getting this tv soon. im big into gaming , for the last 5 years I've been playing on the LG 55 inch oled thinQ web OS B8. Other then it, without warning , just stopped turning on a few weeks ago I've been more then happy with that tv. Scale 1-10 how well do you think my new 65inch TCL qled is going to stack upp to it? with a 1 being "what was you thinking 100% down grade" and a 10 being "bro this is great I just upgraded and added 10 inches for half the price"

Get a HDR roku, it will make your experience fantastic. I’m using in my bedroom, only thing that drives me crazy is the location of the sleep timer

I went to Best Buy to pick up TCL 6 series 55R646 purchased online at 400$(600-200) and saw this TCL 5 series 55S546 brand new priced at 140$(400-260)… Not sure it is price error or they really want to get rid of old TVs but 140 for 55inch QLED TV? I just brought both home 😅 I will test with PS5 and UA-cam steaming, and probably will return one of them…

I purchased the TCL TV, 65" in Canada August 5th. Setup was not as easy (related to audio & CEC) as an LG with web os 5+ or greater. Thus far no performance issues. There are features missing in the setup for audio: such as selecting optical out, optical out with speakers or simply speakers.
I am having a problem with CEC. Not sure if this TCL will power on my receiver? Currently I have the audio connected from optical out TV to optical in on receiver. Receiver is set to TV. Any ideas Steve?
I previously had a Firestick connected to an HDMI input on the receiver, had to relocate to HDMI 3 on the TCL as screen was all fuzzy yellow with Firestick on receiver. No issues after relocating the firestick to TV port. No issues while setting up Google TV. Not sure I will use Google interface considering the firestick is in place. Firestick powers on receiver and controls audio on the receiver as always with no issues. Not sure why TCL as of today cannot power on stereo or control its audio level.
As far as colour from HDR and Dolby Vision, the TCL TV has a cleaner image than my previous LG 55" UM7300. However the gain is truly in dark secenes. Also we do not notice any lag which is why we selected a TV with basic QLED technology. On occasion, TV sizes with a 65" screen may have lag. Never ever noticed lag on our previous 4 LG Tv's (43", 50" 55") which were all budget TV's. I will not offer a comment that states basic LG tv's are tv's to avoid. This TCL QLED is slightly more modern however only when streaming HDR or Dolby content. Viewing regular broadcast TV with a QLED TV is not a big deal. Not much of a visual difference for broadcast TV that i salready 1080 P.
Pricing for the TV in CDN dollars was great for this 65" model. All in, $655. Amazon ran a special last week and Best Buy price matched. The actual store price for Canada is usually $950. In summary basic entry 65" TV's in Canada cost more than $900. so TCL pricing was very attractive - Black Friday in July I guess.
In a couple of months I will provide an updated review.

OK went back and set up the Pioneer receiver for the "TV" input which is dedicated to optical, to HDMI ARC. Did not realize each selection for input on the receiver requires HDMI ARC to be activated. So sound is now controlled by TCVl TV remote. However poer on & off function remains idle.
How’s the tv?
The tv just received an update last week. First sytem update in 15 months. The TV prior to update was working fine I had disconnected the Firestick from HDMI and the Pioneer receiver had been disconnected from another HDMI as I elected to give up on the receiver connection. Local techs noted it was too old for modern HDMI 2.0 connections. Currently I have a soundbar - Yamaha YAS 109 - connected to the EARC HDMI and all was working fine until update. The function to turn on the soundbar while turning on the TV was awkward again after update. I resolved this by doing the - restart - TV option when turning on the TV. Prior to the current update the TV on function was activating the soundbar each time using the TV's quick start option. The TV takes almost 30 seconds to arrive at home screen using the restart startup option. At least all works well. The last feature I just installed was the downloader app I had on my firestick. With the downloader app installed I can add alternative streaming apps to the TV's app section and they work well. If I use the firestick to start the tv and the soundbar all works well as the firestick is connected to the HDMI in port on the soundbar. Basically a good soundbar and Firestick will resolve all peculiar situations with the TCL Tv's software. I did ask the local TECH about these issues and he noted they are linked to the GOOGLE OS. He was not tring to sell me another TV as he only installs systems. Finally if no soundbar, Firestick or receiver are hooked up and the sound comes thru the TV speakers than all is fine. The tv itself related to colour schemes is excellent even 18 months later. @@oilerguy5494
Hi another update. OK the soundbar Yamaha YAS - 109 has Alexa built in, along with wifi and network capabilities. The setup was working peculiar. Different results on TV startup, almost never the same related to the TV home screen or Firestick Home screen as well audio on or not on. The following is a functioning solution. I disabled the soundbar and activated a soundbar reset back to new out of the box (virgin soundbar) condition. I elected not to activate all the extra features for the soundbar - wifi, Alexa and network for streaming music apps. I also removed my 35 foot HDMI cable from the TV's EARC/ARC port to the soundbars ARC port. The connections are now TCL TV EARC/ARC HDMI port connected by 6 foot cable to soundbar ARC port. I believe my adjusted setup has possibly eliminated conflicts (cannot prove that for sure) between Google OS on the TV, a Fire OS for the firestick and Alexa for the soundbar. Firestick is connected to soundbar HDMI IN port (soundbar has a second HDMI port). Soundbar has a feature to allow all devices that are connected to the second HDMI port to pass thru at 4K and high quality audio to the soundbar's ARC port and then travel by the HDMI connection to the TV. All is now working fine, my tech brother in law noted that the long HDMI cable was adding to the performance issues. It is an HDMI Ethernet cable but a cheap unit without a signal booster. Finally when I elect to operate the TCL TV with the Firestick I utilize an Amazon Echo 4th gen speaker connected by bluetooth to the Amazon echo speaker for the audio. Our second TV (LG brand) also uses an Amazon Show 8 speaker connected to that TV's firestick by bluetooth for audio. We do not experience any audio sync delays for the TV's when using bluetooth audio on the firestick streaming unit. If I connect the TV's by bluetooth from the TV's bluetooth function to those Amazon speakers there are audio sync delays. The TCL TV, the Firestick and the soundbar all function as they should when a device is connected by a simple HDMI EARC/ARC port. The HDMI cable in use is a HDMI 2.0 4K cable as was the 35 foot cable. I also have the TCL TV's power on feature (takes 25 seconds) set to do a restart on every power on. I gave up a while back on activating the quick start feature for power on. I guess the Google OS requires a fresh restart same as a computer. Hope this helps. I will avoid fancy soundbars in the future. I will stay with my Amazon speakers forever. As far as the TCL QLED screen performance it remains outstanding after 17 months. Finally I can now turn on the TV and simply watch it. @@oilerguy5494

The 5-series isn’t mini-led like the 6-series. Moving forward I think they want to promote gaming more and Roku App Store doesn’t support online gaming platforms
Have the new firmware updates fixed the out of box color and 480p upscaling issues?
The colors looks good to me and if you’re still using 480p it’s time upgrade your content. I don’t have any to even test that.

Just bought this TV today too as well because me and my siblings are getting my little brother a PS5 for Christmas. Bought the TV for all 3 of them so they could all enjoy it.
I’ve been looking at non stop reviews on this TV. And so far a lot of people say it’s good for gaming, it’s obviously not all the way up there with the TOP TOP models but you can get a good quality picture and a good gaming experience from it. I mean for $200? This is a win. Especially since they’re used to 720p TV resolution.

I just bought this TV (65") and we have a glitch with the volume buttons on the TCL remote with our sound bar. If I try to turn the volume down by holding it down, it won't turn down at all. I then need to press volume up, and I can only volume down by pressing down one at a time. It also will not take the sound bar down all the way. It will take it down to 10 and then stop but it's also inconsistent with that. Sometimes it only goes down to 14. If I hit the up volume again, I can often go down another level until it stops again. It's very odd and annoying because I have to use 3 remotes now (#3 being the original sound bar remote).

Theses TVs are know to have glitches, I’m currently using in my bedroom with a 4k HDR roku. The google tv software is buggy most of the time.

@techsteve. Just purchased this tv open box from bestbuy. Noticed that every time I'm on Netflix and i go from one movie to the next on the main page, there is a short delay and entire screen flickering (like 2-3 flashes of light that seems to be backlighting) is this normal or is this an issue and needs the tv to be returned? Thanks
Also so far I'm only noticing it in Netflix and no other apps or when moving from app to app.

Would you recommend this TV for someone looking for a 75 inch or the u6G from hisense?
I've owned the 75s546 for a month, and the picture is stunning. The sound from the TV is actually pretty decent. BUT, the TCL ts8132 soundbar set I've added is phenomenal for our living den. Back to the TV, my only complaint is the sensitivity of a poor HDMI cord will completely knock out the sound on an input - meaning, it will come back eventually after normal powering down. This issue came with my new XBOX Series S' HDMI cord.
Dolby Vision is okay. Basically, I had to adjust the brightness after activation of Dolby Vision. Yet, the screen brightness really is incredible. I have the TV in our basement with minimal lighting. But, when I turn on the nearby ceiling light (that's 16' away) I have a blinding glare.
All in all, the VRR, Dolby Vision, and it's judder adjustments has impressed me. The picture really does look outstanding with its color presentation. My WIFI is literally across the house, and even at half signal, I've received ultra 4k with no cuts. My family of 5 all use their own devices, and the TCL Series 5 has no issues.
My friend has a Hisense UG7. It's pretty great, also! So, if you want to take my opinion, the TCL Series 5 is pretty damn sweet. Excellent sound through eARC. CEC
.....I almost forgot, the CEC is not responsive to its soundbar cousin, the TCL TS8132, or the XBOX.

As I'm in the east alot of tvs are imported here and tvs that are not sold in West. Tcl is great price decent quality I'm torn between several makes tcl Sony samsung LG. I know all of the overs away from tcl are more expensive. I'd like a 55 inch which would you recommend. Also could you do a video on tvs at the various price points.

I have an Xbox and this exact tv... and there is no way to play games at 120hz, even at 1080p. This tv does not have HDMI 2.1 and is only 60hz panel so what Steve did there makes absolutely no sense at all! My series S doesn't even have an option to change the Hz of the TV. How did you do this wizardry Steve?
He did it through the XBOX settings. That’s where you can mess with the picture resolution.
There are some more videos on here who show you how to.
Its you either play 1080p at 120hz or 4k at 60hz.
