Polaris cards aged like fine wine. I ran an RX 580 for four years before upgrading to an RX 6600. If you can tame expectations and are willing to put up with medium settings, cards like the RX 470 and 580 will serve you just fine!

medium settings look 80-95% as good as ultra nowadays anyway, while doubling or tripling the performance.

Used the 4GB RX 570 (essentially just a slightly faster RX 470) in the past and I had a great fun with it. It can still game at 900p or 1080p in AAA games as long as you put it in the lowest settings. The 4GB memory is the one big limitation though. I'd recommend the 8GB version for a slightly better performance and avoid the memory limitation.

They're not much more expensive either for 8gb. Snagged a MSI armor RX570 8gb for $40 on Ebay after offering a few different sellers.
A whole $2 more then what ProYamYam paid for that 470 4gb. Usually they're about $50-$60 from what I saw, but even at $12-$22 more I think the extra VRAM is worth.

I bought one recently myself for a build. The only issue is that I didn't know that it only has a DPI port to work with no HDMI or double DPI just one DPI so I ended up having to buy an adapter.

I ran across a Sapphire RX 470 Nitro 8GB in the original box packaging and since I am still rather new at PC building and gaming, and what's considered old hardware is all new to me, I bid on it and won it for $31 US. It has LED and dual bios switch and works great paired with my Z97 I7-4790K machine. The Sapphire Trixx software is still applicable to this card.

I just got a BOX of these and the auction guy claimed they were used. They dont look like it one bit. They are the single DVI port version with the MSI Armor cooler attached. They also mentioned they were NOT gaming cards. I assumed they had mining bios installed but they just show up at the "MSI RX 470 OC" I am very excited as these will allow me to make a few systems to sell and one of my sons friends wants a fortnite PC so they can play together. These cards work great for that use case. This will make like the 6th free fortnite PC that I'll be building. You cant knock the cyberpunk performance. It beats the ps4 and xbox one versions and you can squeeze a bit more res out of it and still maintain 30 fps. Shiz, the previous gen consoles drop to 20 fps at times and run at 12 fps on the menu for some weird reason. Same thing applies to Hogwarts, just like you had mentioned. I got 17 of these bad boys and paid less than $200 so I dont think I did too awful.

It really depends on the game. Some games get a significant bump to FPS, others not so much. It does absolutely nothing on a benchmark test. I think it is more a scam to keep gamers in the dark and overspending. Makes it harder to test a gaming PC because it will only do something in a game and may or may not be relevant.

Oh man I just picked one up a couple days ago for $19USD. Scrolling through FB marketplace. It stood out as too good a deal to let slide. Ha only thing is it's the mining edition and only one DVI port. Works perfect in linux and in my MacPro 5,1 running Monterey. Really pulls it's weight in older titles like demonstrated in this video. Not i just need to solder on a few HDMI or DP.

A reman 5500 for under $100 with 8GB sounds a lot more like a suitable budget card in 2024. A used 5700XT is the new meta for budget eSports and can be had for as low as $100 in the US. The RX series is done. 4GB GPUs are done. Fortnite is well on its way to having similar system requirements to a AAA title. Esports as a multiplayer game that runs on a potato is dying. They brought back CS:Go and there are some other old shooter still active, like Wolfenstein ET but the games that are popular with the kiddies are evolving.
Fortnite Performance mode might deliver high framerates on obsolete hardware but that doesn't make it a good gaming experience. Visual quality is just as important in a competitive shooter and you should strike a balance. Not throw detail out the window for as many frames as possible. Give me 90 fps and I can be competitive.
Nobody is pairing an RX 470 with a 12400F and that framerate in Fortnite is more about the CPU you are using and less about the GPU. Try it again with a Haswell i7 and do a realistic test. Yes, if you blow all your money on a CPU, you can play most CPU intensive titles at reasonable framerates on a cheap GPU. I started playing Cyberpunk on a R9 380 and it ran a lot better then than it does in 2024. CDPR made it into a Nvidia showcase and completely pissed all over AMD GPU owners. Hell they even pissed all over Turing and Ampere GPU owners with the RT enhancements (which you mostly don't notice anyway). Used to run Psycho RT well on a 2070 Super. Not anymore. Can do it on a 3060 with some DLSS but it isn't worth it.

Fortnite is not that hard to run on the GPU front, it will run fine on GPUs like the GTX 760. 4GB cards for eSports games are totally fine for low settings and decently high frame rates, which is shown in the video

I bought a Sapphire Nitro+ RX580 8GB secondhand in 2019 off a suspected miner (he has 5 of these cards for sale then).
When doing benchmark in F1 2021, the temperature hit the 75C limit (have not given it a deep clean, only just brushing off the dust on the fans and backplate) and drawing 170W of power.
Underclocked it to 1400Mhz with 50mV undervolt, now it barely hit 70C with peak 140 FPS, average of 120FPS and low of 100FPS while drawing under 140W of power, all on ultra settings.
The only problem with AMD is the driver update made old games not working like it used to, i used to play Cossacks 3 as a kid and in 2019 i bought the remastered version on steam, i worked fine then, last year when i tried to play again all the water textures were missing, a quick search on the forums and there were multiple complains about the issue since 2021 and AMD basically ignored it.
