Considering she was forced upon him by his psycho abusive father when he was 16 and she 18 while she had a choice and he didn't I don't really blame him much, he was kind enough to come back and try to save her and their children instead of saving himself and running away with lyanna
I was always fascinated how Game of Thrones was all thrown into motion through the actions of a dead man. Although dead, Rhaegar was the most important character for the series and everything that happened in it could be traces back to Rhaegar. Just brilliant stuff

Technically Robert caused the war for not realizing Lyanna despised him and never wanted to be with him. Oh wait, he did actually realize that. Then we find out that he anulled his marriage to lyanna,thus making lyanna queen instead of elia and making all of her children with rhaeghar bastards. There's also the fact elia ended up brutally murdered and raped(with her children killed as well) by a man rhaeghar knighted, due to a war rhaeghar started. As if to rub salt in the wound,we find out rhaeghar and lyanna named their son(jon) aegon,the same name as that of rhaeghar's first son with elia. Elia's entire story is basically rhaeghar finding new ways to shit on her

Rhaegar parallels Robb Stark in a way. They were both the sons of great men destined to inherit their mantles yet were undone essentially by marrying the wrong person and dragging hundreds of thousands of people down with them for their mistake.
Rhaegar's grandfather married love over his betrothal of tully girl, like his father ( aegion the 5th ) married love over his betrothal of a cousin Targaryen.
Although I will say in Robb's defense he didn't start the war and he didn't intend on falling in love, plus his demands for peace were reasonable, it's just everyone around him ended up screwing him over. Rhaegar from the looks knew what he was doing, knew what it would cause, and did it anyway. I have more sympathy for Robb in this case.
An important part, if not the most important, of rhaegar's story is that he was a slightly weird/aloof child who suddenly was struck with a sort of divine inspiration to fulfill an ancient prophecy. His interest in the realm, his interest in history and knowledge, was not until he was inspired to pursue the prophecy. Before that, for all intents and purposes, he was a strange and unknowable child to almost everyone.
Great acting by the actor of Ned Stark at 1:05. Truly amazing. He EXACTLY displays the emotions of keeping a secret, knowing that what Robert was saying was not true. Ned Stark is the real GOAT of GOT.

I have never been so captivated by a character that had been talked about for 7 full seasons like I was with Rhaegar. Hearing everybody’s different views of him. It really helped paint a picture of him. His kindness, his braveness, and in the end, his selfishness. Elia Martel and her kids were butchered because of him and that is heartbreaking. Honestly, I really hope that we get a Robert’s Rebellion prequel.
Was he really kind? In the real world if a man leaves his sick wife for a younger prettier girl he's usually considered a douchebag and an asshole and the girl is considered a homewrecker. Not to mention that it is kind of implied (in the books) that he didn't really love Lyanna, he only married her to complete his interpretation of the prince that was promised prophecy, he believed that a line in the prophecy stated that the prince that was promised must have 3 children. The show kind of implies the same thing though because in the show we see Dayne try to kill Ned on sight on orders of Rhaegar- he didn't care about Lyanna or her family(after all he did ride out to fight her two remaining brothers in the battle of the trident), he only cared about her offspring. Lyanna isn't much better either - she literally finds out that her future father-in-law killed her brother and father brutally and still decides to marry into that family. Add that to the fact that she knew he was married to Elia and still decided to marry him, and this clearly shows that Lyanna didn't care about anyone's feelings but her own. LIke I said in the real world we would consider both of them to be the lowest of the low but in fiction, we see this as a tragic love story.

I forgot who said it, but “Love is the death of duty” goes for the whole show. How many characters died acting out of love? Rhaegar, Littlefinger, Jaime, Dany, Robb, Oberyn (for his sister) etc and it was Jon who finally decided to choose duty over love

When you think about it, it just goes to show how gifted Robert was as a warrior. Rhaegar unhorsed Barristan Selmy, one of the finest knight Westeros has ever seen, and yet he was killed by Robert on the Trident. I wish we’ll get to see this part of the story in a TV show one day!
I believe Robert was used to walking in the mud and blood that the trident didn’t really affect his fighting style, while rhaegar may not have been as used to unstable footing. Just my assumption of course

At the time of his death Ella and her children were in presumably one of the safest places in the realm the Red Keep of King's Landing. Also the plan was for the women and children to be sent to Dragonstone prior to the war reaching King's Landing. However, King Aerys decided to send only his queen and son to Dragonstone and refused to allow Ella and her children to leave. Don't get me wrong, Rheagar did not do right by Ella at all! But from his perspective i could understand how he could not foresee the horrible end that befell them.

Robb- Makes a vow to a man to marry his daughter for his help. Breaks his vow and married another woman. He got a lot of people killed. And he accomplished nothing in the end. He didn’t save his sisters and he didn’t avenge his father. He got his wife and unborn child killed. His mother. If Tywin and Roose hadn’t ended it with that dinner the North would have been entirely ruined. All in all, they broke their vows and got a lot of people killed. And all over a woman.
It’s such a tragedy that Dany never knew how good of a man Ned actually was, I have no doubt that he would’ve taken her to raise at Winterfell in secret to keep her safe, given the opportunity.
He even tried to save her in the first season and gave up his position as hand of the king when it was enacted. He wasn't loyal to the targaryens but to innocent children. We should have gotten a scene like that

She was killed by Ser Amory Lorch, who found her hiding under Rhaegar's bed, hoping he would protect her, and so Lorch dragged her out from it and stabbed her fifty times. Roose Bolton eventually fed him to a bear at Harrenhal, but it wasn't out of vengeance for Rhaenys.
Rhaegar gets way to much credit for what he did. He was the last straw that broke the camels back. People where fed up with the mad king, the was was bound to happen. They just needed a guy like Robert to go off.
thing is, its hinted at in the books that Rhaegar planned to remove the Mad King from the throne and become king himself, because he seen how bad his father was getting. Sadly Robert killed him before this could happen.

You can really see the inspiration this story took from Hellen of Troy, the Greeks destroyed Troy because they were told she was raped and kidnapped (like Roberts rebellion) but she and Paris were actually in love.
Eh...some sources claim that Paris died during the war, and later Helen actually returned to Menelaus willingly and lived happily and even had a daughter. Apparently it was Aphrodite who used her magic to make Helen fall for Paris as it was his reward per their deal.

In the books it’s theorized that Rhaegar only wanted Lyanna to birth the prince who was promised. A child with blood of the first men and the blood of valyria. Actually I think he was trying to recreate the trio that conquered Westeros: Aegon and his sister-wives, Rhaenys and Visenya. He already had Aegon and Rhaenys with Elia Martell but like you said, she couldn't have anymore kids, so he sought out a new wife to give him a second daughter, Visenya. I think he believed his son was the Prince that was Promised but to fulfill the prophecy, he'd have to grow up and marry his two sisters, just as Aegon I did, as that would be the only way to complete the three-headed dragon

The best off screen acting award goes to rhaegar even though we don't hear him talking in the books but everyone is talking about him it makes us more love the character that we haven't seen

At no point in the books does it say he was obsessed. We see one scene in Daenerys’ House of the Undying dream where he speaks about the three heads of the dragon and the prince who was promised and looks directly at her. That’s it. He likely crowned Lyanna because he fell in love with her when he discovered she was the Knight of the Laughing Tree, the mysterious knight who Aerys tasked him with finding.

I wouldn't say scumbags when you think about it in GoT's / medieval context. People are forced to marry people they don't care for or even hate just to make alliances. Here they loved each other and wanted to be together despite their family decisions, which is understandable. Could argue it was selfish for not thinking about the consequences but they were young. Kind of a Romeo Juliet scenario when you think about it.
The editing and choice of dialogue is phenomenal… not to mention the use of Dr. Ford’s score! Game of Thrones will always be my no.1 show, despite everything after s6 ep10 ( A.K.A peakkk GoT). However, Westworld season 1 is also up there as the best I’ve ever seen and just like GoT, a lot of that was down to an amazing soundtrack by Ramin Djawadi. I can’t believe how good Westworld season 1 genuinely was, such a compelling story of the mind and reality itself. It definitely does NOT get its flowers.
Something I always find myself wondering about is how Lyanna reacted to the death of her father and Brandon if she really did love Rhaegar when she left with him and set the whole land to war did she still love him when she heard his father had roasted her's alive and laughed while her brother strangled himself to death trying to save him.

He returned also for her sake. He didn't have any reason to return to fight Robert. He could have just moved with Lyanna to his ancestral palace and lived there, yet he returned for Elia's sake even after receiving an annulment.
Except the Martells never blame the Targaryens in the books and Doran, her brother, literally wanted to side with Daenerys. Why? Because they didn’t blame Rhaegar. It was Tywin, Gregor Clegane, Robert Baratheon and Aerys. Aerys was the one who kept her and the children hostage. He was paranoid over everybody, including his son.

Lot of folks in these comments talking like it was Rhaegar and Lyanna who set off the rebellion, and not whoever told the Starks that Lyanna had been kidnapped instead of running off of her own accord. Robert would've be plenty upset if she'd run off willingly, of course, but the Starks would likely have taken a very different view (and probably kept their heads in the process), and Robert wouldn't have gotten far on his own.
Nobody talks about Aerys Targeryan mad King...how he still supported his son knowing he was wrong to ditch elia martell yet still he went to wars against great houses for his sons mistake.

Jon Arryn started it when he refused to execute Robert and Ned, as wished by Aerys.
Except not a single one of them, except Robert who was jealous over Lyanna, describes him this way. Ned only thinks about him a few times and Oberyn never disses him in the books because he’s worse. Oberyn has dozens of bastard daughters + frequently abused and abandoned his lovers such as Obara’s mother.
what gets forgotten is that even though it was presented as a Lovestory, from what we now Lyanna was somewhat realistic, she would never have agreed to Rheagar taking her away from her Family, getting her Pregnant which (because he already was married) would be considered a Bastard later on, and throwing her and Elia obviously under the Bus, for what he though was ment to be Destiny cause hes the chosen one. The whole Point of the many POVs is to proof that there is no chosen one, there are only People, and RHeagar was more than willing to sacrafice 2 Woman and a Whole Kingdom for his Idea of Destiny
Seems to me that Rhaegar and Lyanna were an reinterpretation of Lancelot and Guinevere. Both loved each other, but because of their passions, members of the Round Table started to hate each other, King Arthur's authority was questionned to the point where he had no other choice but to make war to his best knight and loyal friend. Their love started a series of event that brought the end of the arthurian age. Both survived the downfall and both went seperately on a road of repentance for the remaining of their lifes at the price of their own selfish desires.

"Rhaegar at tourney" story has been referenced at various instances throughout GOT, yet it was never picturised. Something that makes it even more beautiful.
“Rheagar never liked killing” yeah but he sure didn’t mind starting a war that killed thousands. It’s funny how the starks are right about a lot of things. The man who passes the sentence should swing the sword. Kinda speaks to rheagars character, he didn’t like killing but he didn’t seem to mind other people killing each other for him. If you’re going to start a war at least fight in that war not wait until the last battle to show up with an army. He deserved a hammer to the chest whether it was for love or not.
Rhaegar didn't start the war, Robert and Aerys did. Years of pent-up frustration at the Mad King reached a boiling point and tipped over when Rhaegar and Lyanna eloped, giving Robert and his allies the perfect excuse (alongside the death of Ned's brother and father) to go to war.
Last time I checked, Rhaegar wasn't an omniscient prophet who knew what the exact outcome of his actions would be. I think you are giving him way to much credit.

Rhaegar parallels Robb Stark in a way. They were both the sons of great men destined to inherit their mantles yet were undone essentially by marrying the wrong person and dragging hundreds of thousands of people down with them for their mistake.

Rhaegar's grandfather married love over his betrothal of tully girl, like his father ( aegion the 5th ) married love over his betrothal of a cousin Targaryen.
Although I will say in Robb's defense he didn't start the war and he didn't intend on falling in love, plus his demands for peace were reasonable, it's just everyone around him ended up screwing him over. Rhaegar from the looks knew what he was doing, knew what it would cause, and did it anyway. I have more sympathy for Robb in this case.

An important part, if not the most important, of rhaegar's story is that he was a slightly weird/aloof child who suddenly was struck with a sort of divine inspiration to fulfill an ancient prophecy. His interest in the realm, his interest in history and knowledge, was not until he was inspired to pursue the prophecy. Before that, for all intents and purposes, he was a strange and unknowable child to almost everyone.
Great acting by the actor of Ned Stark at 1:05. Truly amazing. He EXACTLY displays the emotions of keeping a secret, knowing that what Robert was saying was not true. Ned Stark is the real GOAT of GOT.

I have never been so captivated by a character that had been talked about for 7 full seasons like I was with Rhaegar. Hearing everybody’s different views of him. It really helped paint a picture of him. His kindness, his braveness, and in the end, his selfishness. Elia Martel and her kids were butchered because of him and that is heartbreaking. Honestly, I really hope that we get a Robert’s Rebellion prequel.

Was he really kind? In the real world if a man leaves his sick wife for a younger prettier girl he's usually considered a douchebag and an asshole and the girl is considered a homewrecker. Not to mention that it is kind of implied (in the books) that he didn't really love Lyanna, he only married her to complete his interpretation of the prince that was promised prophecy, he believed that a line in the prophecy stated that the prince that was promised must have 3 children. The show kind of implies the same thing though because in the show we see Dayne try to kill Ned on sight on orders of Rhaegar- he didn't care about Lyanna or her family(after all he did ride out to fight her two remaining brothers in the battle of the trident), he only cared about her offspring.
Lyanna isn't much better either - she literally finds out that her future father-in-law killed her brother and father brutally and still decides to marry into that family. Add that to the fact that she knew he was married to Elia and still decided to marry him, and this clearly shows that Lyanna didn't care about anyone's feelings but her own. LIke I said in the real world we would consider both of them to be the lowest of the low but in fiction, we see this as a tragic love story.

At the time of his death Ella and her children were in presumably one of the safest places in the realm the Red Keep of King's Landing. Also the plan was for the women and children to be sent to Dragonstone prior to the war reaching King's Landing. However, King Aerys decided to send only his queen and son to Dragonstone and refused to allow Ella and her children to leave. Don't get me wrong, Rheagar did not do right by Ella at all! But from his perspective i could understand how he could not foresee the horrible end that befell them.

If Tywin and Roose hadn’t ended it with that dinner the North would have been entirely ruined.

She was killed by Ser Amory Lorch, who found her hiding under Rhaegar's bed, hoping he would protect her, and so Lorch dragged her out from it and stabbed her fifty times. Roose Bolton eventually fed him to a bear at Harrenhal, but it wasn't out of vengeance for Rhaenys.

You can really see the inspiration this story took from Hellen of Troy, the Greeks destroyed Troy because they were told she was raped and kidnapped (like Roberts rebellion) but she and Paris were actually in love.

In the books it’s theorized that Rhaegar only wanted Lyanna to birth the prince who was promised. A child with blood of the first men and the blood of valyria. He was apparently obsessed with prophecy and legend. He believed that he must have three children, but Elyia Martell couldn’t give him a third...

Actually I think he was trying to recreate the trio that conquered Westeros: Aegon and his sister-wives, Rhaenys and Visenya. He already had Aegon and Rhaenys with Elia Martell but like you said, she couldn't have anymore kids, so he sought out a new wife to give him a second daughter, Visenya. I think he believed his son was the Prince that was Promised but to fulfill the prophecy, he'd have to grow up and marry his two sisters, just as Aegon I did, as that would be the only way to complete the three-headed dragon

where in the books does it say that he was obsessed? we know he knew about the prophecy, as did all Targaryens before him, and they all believed in it... And it ended up being true...
So, what's your point?
At no point in the books does it say he was obsessed. We see one scene in Daenerys’ House of the Undying dream where he speaks about the three heads of the dragon and the prince who was promised and looks directly at her. That’s it. He likely crowned Lyanna because he fell in love with her when he discovered she was the Knight of the Laughing Tree, the mysterious knight who Aerys tasked him with finding.
Ned's expression tells it all.. He had to live on with this burden of secret in his life

I wouldn't say scumbags when you think about it in GoT's / medieval context. People are forced to marry people they don't care for or even hate just to make alliances.
Here they loved each other and wanted to be together despite their family decisions, which is understandable.
Could argue it was selfish for not thinking about the consequences but they were young.

Game of Thrones will always be my no.1 show, despite everything after s6 ep10 ( A.K.A peakkk GoT).
However, Westworld season 1 is also up there as the best I’ve ever seen and just like GoT, a lot of that was down to an amazing soundtrack by Ramin Djawadi.
I can’t believe how good Westworld season 1 genuinely was, such a compelling story of the mind and reality itself. It definitely does NOT get its flowers.
Something I always find myself wondering about is how Lyanna reacted to the death of her father and Brandon if she really did love Rhaegar when she left with him and set the whole land to war did she still love him when she heard his father had roasted her's alive and laughed while her brother strangled himself to death trying to save him.

Lot of folks in these comments talking like it was Rhaegar and Lyanna who set off the rebellion, and not whoever told the Starks that Lyanna had been kidnapped instead of running off of her own accord. Robert would've be plenty upset if she'd run off willingly, of course, but the Starks would likely have taken a very different view (and probably kept their heads in the process), and Robert wouldn't have gotten far on his own.

I seriously loved the part of character Lord Eddard Stark, He was the One of the Most Honorable Character, father, brother and Uncle.
Rheagar and Lyanna’s story gives me Helen of Troy vibes. Clearly that was the inspiration for GRRM. Rheagar and Lyanna were selfish and their forbidden love brought about the fall of the Targyrian dynasty and killed hundreds of thousands.

what gets forgotten is that even though it was presented as a Lovestory, from what we now Lyanna was somewhat realistic, she would never have agreed to Rheagar taking her away from her Family, getting her Pregnant which (because he already was married) would be considered a Bastard later on, and throwing her and Elia obviously under the Bus, for what he though was ment to be Destiny cause hes the chosen one.
The whole Point of the many POVs is to proof that there is no chosen one, there are only People, and RHeagar was more than willing to sacrafice 2 Woman and a Whole Kingdom for his Idea of Destiny
Seems to me that Rhaegar and Lyanna were an reinterpretation of Lancelot and Guinevere. Both loved each other, but because of their passions, members of the Round Table started to hate each other, King Arthur's authority was questionned to the point where he had no other choice but to make war to his best knight and loyal friend. Their love started a series of event that brought the end of the arthurian age. Both survived the downfall and both went seperately on a road of repentance for the remaining of their lifes at the price of their own selfish desires.
Just like how Bran is the fisher king.

“Rheagar never liked killing” yeah but he sure didn’t mind starting a war that killed thousands. It’s funny how the starks are right about a lot of things. The man who passes the sentence should swing the sword. Kinda speaks to rheagars character, he didn’t like killing but he didn’t seem to mind other people killing each other for him. If you’re going to start a war at least fight in that war not wait until the last battle to show up with an army. He deserved a hammer to the chest whether it was for love or not.
Rhaegar didn't start the war, Robert and Aerys did. Years of pent-up frustration at the Mad King reached a boiling point and tipped over when Rhaegar and Lyanna eloped, giving Robert and his allies the perfect excuse (alongside the death of Ned's brother and father) to go to war.
Last time I checked, Rhaegar wasn't an omniscient prophet who knew what the exact outcome of his actions would be. I think you are giving him way to much credit.
@@highlyopinionated5611 sorry, but it's a bullsh*t: he was the crown prince, the heir to the throne, so he should know that power comes from political alliances and stability with your vassals; so if you disrespect those alliances and your vassals's rights (by this move, Rhaegar insulted the rights in primis of House Martell, since he publicily humiliated and then cast aside their beloved princess Elia; House Baratheon, since Lyanna was betrothed to Robert; and in the end House Stark, since he took away Rickard Stark's daughter without his knowning and consent and ruin his alliance to the Baratheons), you'll have to face a rebellion.

Characters like Tyrion, Jon, Jamie.... The Kingslayer had a phenomenal character arc before it went to shit. What a disappointment.
