  • Women have been playing Hamlet since the 1700s. So why does the choice to cast a female actor in Shakespeare’s largest role still matter today? Sara Clark is an actor, playing Hamlet as a woman at Cincinnati Shakespeare Company in 2020. She talks about how the decision to play the Bard’s most temperamentally capricious and preternaturally intelligent character as a woman can help us imagine a better world. Learn more at: cincyshakes.com Sara Clark is a philomath and a storyteller, who believes wholeheartedly in curiosity, empathy, and the power of words. She is a resident actor, director, producer, teaching artist, and grants administrator with Cincinnati Shakespeare Company, currently serving as its Associate Artistic Director. As a fourteen-year member of the CSC Resident Ensemble, she has racked up over 75 productions with CSC, tackling such roles as Rosalind, Juliet, Marc Antony, Elizabeth Bennet, Lady Macbeth, and in the spring of 2020, Hamlet. Sara is a Shakespeare mythbuster and loves teaching with CSC’s Shakespeare Summer Camp and Groundlings Program, a year-long Shakespeare intensive for high school students. She genuinely believes that one person talking to one person is the only thing that will ever change the world. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at www.ted.com/tedx

      I think the two key takeaways. Recent years royal Shakespeare productions have buried (unintentionally) several productions that women have taken the lead in, in ways that could be described no other way but iconic.
      I'm happy csf is going this route and has a performer that is capable enough to handle it (it's a toughy for most actors).
      I think placing it in modern day makes a huge difference as well, but I need to see how well that's handled first person to be sure.

    I fully understand this sentiment. For the past seven years as I led the charge in my second country Belize 🇧🇿 to coordinate a musical band and show- Some of my greatest Opposition and even SABOTAGE came from some males. Yes there were some who were very supportive but others were NOT. Even some of the public support was stymied by the fact that the typical male was NOT at the helm.

      Or, perhaps, men simply disagree with her. Also, I've seen plenty of arguments between women and men about this topic that didn't end in the disbanding of their relationship. Even so, why would you end a relationship with someone simply because they have an opposing political view. Thats sounds very toxic and intolerant.

    • @ryla22

      Men AND women probably hated this because of how many times we've seen this exact same idea spouted over and over again. Nobody wants to hear it again society understands your mesage and science knows you're wrong. Only the people who don't know a lot or don't know how to do proper research are feminists, everyone else (in my opinion) just wants feminism to chill out a bit so it stops getting crammed down their throats.

      Yeah, one of Hamlet’s major personality is being a total misogynistic a-hole to women, believing to be whores and lustful. If Hamlet is played as a female… it would seem more self-hatred and low self-esteem I suppose? Unless female Hamlet would be played younger (in her 20’s or teens) and her mother was still able to have children. Then she could be played a jealous and angry character since her mother married her husband’s brother to attempt having a ‘true heir’ and taking female Hamlet’s role as a future ruler since, males go first in line of succession despite’s having older sisters back then.

      Why, Maria Knez, do you assume I'd have her be Ophelia? And if *_you_* understand what the meaning of this TedX talk is, would you please explain? I don't get it.
      Hamlet was created a man by a man, what's the point arguing about that? Many male roles have been played by female actors, no problem as I see it, but attempting changing the gender of Hamlet seems a bit crude imo...
      I also can't imagine any woman reacting as he did. It's such an extreme male emotional pattern and scheme - so Nordic that I actually suspect there's a true story behind Shakepeare's script.
      Anyway, it's probably just my inability to navigate the paths of high female intelligence that leaves me stumped. I've read the subtitle, but still can't quite seem to grasp her point. Is it possible that she over complicates things a bit?

    • @Hallands.
      @Hallands. 4 роки тому

      Maria Knez Also, what made you introduce the concept of "awakening"? Sara didn't, and I didn't... But it's of course true, "awakening isn't falling in love". The "falling" kinda gives that away right off the bat.

      we are not going to get backlash for this we are just trying to get equal footing in the world. why is it so hard for you to understand? Are you just that sad and pathetic that you can't let women be equal to you?

    Stop blaming people for you’re problems and stand up, work, make and effort. Stop blaming the “patriarchy” you’re not victims. 1st world problems. What about the little girls refused any education, without something as simple to us as toilet paper? That’s oppression.
    Women like softer roles. We tend to adore the idea of raising a family and there is nothing wrong with that. Stationary jobs whether that’s being a nurse, vet, teacher, office worker, scientist or lawyer. Also, no one likes noisy women or loud obnoxious men.
