  • This video translate one poem by Wang Wei and another poem by Li Bai on romantic love. Even writing on the same subject, the two poets could not be more different in their styles and the emotions expressed in their poems. While Wang Wei is reserved and cool about his feeling in his poem, Li Bai is his usual passionate and dramatic self expressing strong emotions in his poem.

Li Bai composed many love songs while Wang Wei composed only one poem on romantic love. Yet Wang Wei's poem is far more popular than any other poems. I would love to know what you think of the romantic poems of these two great poets!

Dear doctor gao,I am a poet to and I am a men.I am nearly sure that Wang Wei s poem is about romantic love between men, because love between men Is very common. It doesn't mean that you are only loving men, during a livetime many things can happen and loving both genders makes you double Happy ....

Thank you for your comment. I certainly would not exclude love between men from this poem although there is no evidence either way. I mean, the Tang Dynasty was a rather open minded when it comes to gay romance.

I am planning to make some videos about poems explicitly expressing romantic love of same gender in the future. There are quite a few of them. 😀😀

Thanks Dr Gao, I love your videos., keep posting please.
Although I had read a few poems by Li Bai your content has opened a new, rich world of poetry to me.
Just a suggestion, but instead of repeating "Lovesickness" twice in the Li Bai poem, you could also translate the line as "Long lovesickness, Long lovelorn.."
Lovelorn is an old-fashioned word with very similar connotations to lovesickness.
I recently came across a recital of the poem Exile's Letter by Li Bai, which I found beautiful : ua-cam.com/video/NjpTWqdSQuw/v-deo.html
The wonderful emotion the reader gives the lines, I think, makes up for any errors in translation.
It would be nice to know more about Exile's Letter, if ever you need ideas for future videos : )
Thank you so much, once again.

I find the poem read in the video you pointed out. It is a very long poem. I quite like the poem. Maybe I will make a video about the poem in the future. It is great idea. Thank you!!

It’s interesting the point about killing in autumn given the 內經曰:
    秋三月,此謂容平,天氣以急,地氣以明,早臥早起,與雞俱興,使志安寧,以緩秋刑,收斂神氣,使秋氣平,無外其志,使肺氣清,此秋氣之應,養收之道也。
    秋後問斬,非養收之道也!

Thanks for this comment. I love this kind of questions. They make me think much deeper that what I would normally do.
I think the argument follows exactly what I stated in this video. The energy or Qi of the autumn is 刑 which means to punish or kill. To carry out execution in the late autumn is to follow the natural pattern of things. However, for people who are not in a position of acting out this natural tendency, it is a dangerous time. Because he either suffers depression due to the fact that he could not act out his impulses of violence or needs to do something about such impulses. I think this passage offers a way to release some of the negative energy built up within oneself. I hope my argument make sense to you. Let me know what you think of this line of arguments. 😅😅😀😀

@@dr.gaosclassroom Wouldn’t it be the opposite? As the autumn period is about withdrawing and preserving (收回、保存). Hence one shouldn’t “act out their impulses” (無外其志). Rather they should settle their impulses (使志安寧) and restrain their spirit (收斂神氣).
以緩秋刑 is hard to interpret. It could be mean to lessen the severity of those punishments as interpreted by 王冰 or it could mean to reduce or postpone those punishments.
I prefer the second interpretation because it fits more neatly with 使志安寧.
But the first interpretation is probably correct given historical context.

Thank you. I agree with you that the text is telling people to restrain from acting out. I think the problem is that the original text does not clarify who is the subject here. My interpretation is that the subjects here are the natural cycle as well as the people. The natural cycle does its killing in this season, that is 刑. and the people will power could also act out in executing criminals and raising war campaigns. However, the mass as part of living creatures are also in danger of being hurt by the killing season. That is why they need to preserve themselves and calm their natural impulse so that they would not be hurt or hurting others. @@HakuYuki001
