  • I had an old grimy, dirty, rusty vise that I wanted to give a new life to. This is the process I went through to restore it and add a forced rust patina. I also replaced the metal jaws with wood & leather ones so I can use it to hold small wood pieces when woodworking.

I have an old Wilton vise from the late '70s when I worked with heavy equipment. Somewhere in my travels, a jaw broke out, and farther down the years that jaw got lost. Oddly that lost jaw has really kept me from restoring and putting the vise into service in my wood shop. But, now I know that heavy equipment working vise needs wood and leather jaws to to go to work in my retirement woodshop. Thank you for the video and idea!

That forced layer of rust is a new trick to me. It worked out nicely - the reconditioned vise looks quite beautiful, in its own right. Thanks for sharing.

Thanks John! Now I'm curious to try to create rust on more surfaces 😂

    Linn, love this video.
Perfect to watch on a lazy St Patty's Day afternoon (especially as I am NOT Irish)
My Grandfather had a vise similar in his shop, he passed in 1970, my father put it is his shop, he passed in 1978, I refurbished it and it is now in my shop. I had to paint mine Railroad Caboose Red.
Keep making these great and wonderful videos.

You’ve have just entered the weirdly satisfying world of restoration videos Lin! Loved the video, thanks. How far are you willing to go? Stick with the ‘gateway drug’ or go all the way and get sucked into the hard stuff and rival ‘My Mechanic’? 😂

in my experience the wooden jaws will split on you, i changed mine back and made from a old cutting board two pieces with strong magnets and that works as a dream even when i apply strong force. he looks nice.

Awesome job on the restoration Linn! 😃👍🏼👊🏼 .... I was thinking, if you have one of those thin HDPE cutting sheets lying around that you're not using, you could cut it into a big washer to perhaps have the vise swivel even more smoothly (potentially) .... 🤔 ... Anyway, just a thought, not that it's necessary.

Came up well most people would have just sent it to the dump.

    I have a question.
Why do vise makers, put anvils on vices, and then place a statement in the instructions, tell owners to not hammer things on the anvil?
Seriously, everyone that knows what an anvil is for, is going to see that anvil, pick up a hammer and bang something flat or curved.

This old vise made in China 🤭🤨

And half the cr@p you own is made in China, too. These days, the goal is to reduce the impact of our disposable society. Unless you're a hypocritical snob...
