    A study was released that shows rack pulls above the knee have a 98% traps activation. It was the primary muscle being stimulated. So it seems your video fits science. Nice!

    I've been doing these for about 6 months and you absolutely have explosive trap growth visible on almost on a weekly basis, it's amazing. For the first few week you will feel it all the way to the glutes but after a while your back catches up and you mostly feel it in the traps. When you first start don't go up in weight until you hit 10 reps on your top set with a given weight to allow your back time to catch up and prevent that hidden weakness in your chain to be missed.

    I thought Alex was full of shit at first with the power shrugs and rack pulls but god damn was I wrong. I started doing rack pulls and power shrugs and my back and traps have blown up in the last 2 months. It is unbelievable. Weighted stretching is the key to getting jacked for natural lifters. Good work getting Alex on here Omar.

    Just wanted to say thank you for publishing this video. I use to shrug the entire rack of dumbbells. Going from 110's down to like nothing and then back up again 10 reps each. Did barely anything for me. I started doing these rack pulls maybe like 3 weeks ago. I saw results IMMEDIATELY!! Like within 3 times of doing them I noticed observable gains. And you're right, people look at me crazy when they see me loading the bar and then only shrugging about... 3-5" but I don't care what they think. The shit is working and I love it. Thanks man. FYI, I'm doing these rack pulls every other day. I'm currently pulling 405 but I feel like i'm already ready to throw on a couple of 25s to get get up to 455. I should be pulling 500 by end of month. I know that's no where near 1000 but it's not my goal.

    Heavy Farmer's walks and heavy deadlifts are probably the best for building bigger traps in my own experience.

    • @alexilaiho321
      @alexilaiho321 8 років тому +25

      yeah but your deadlift will never be as big as your rack pull thus the stretch that deadlift provides is inferiour to the rack pull stretch = missing trap gains. You can incorporate rack pulls in your program and do all these 3 lifts ,your traps will explode

    • @thedeadliftfanatic6779
      @thedeadliftfanatic6779 8 років тому +13

      Yeh. I gotcha. You're talking about specificity. As in if your traps are lagging. But from my own experience, if you have mediocre trap genetics, overtime very heavy deadlifts will build big traps ( even though your method might be optimal ), and I just started adding in very heavy farmer walks, and that added upon that even further. Not disagreeing with you, I'm merely suggesting that your method might be better suited for individuals who tried everything, but nothing seemed to work. peace ✌🏼️

    Saw this video a few months ago and thought I'd give it a try. Farmer walks and lifting a heavy bar whilst stretching the traps...really started to work and I am seeing good results.
    I kept seeing no results with deadlifts, shrugs and overhead shrugs which I have also tried for years. Thank you for this, stretching the trapezoid downwards is what really targets that muscle and I can feel the doms exactly on that spot the next day.

    Good points in this video. I used to get super sore traps (worse than any shrug) from Romanian deadlifts for high reps (15-30 reps). If ou watch guys shrug in gyms as well they use stupid levels of weight and they aren't actually moving their traps so they aren't really shrugging anything. If I was to recommend you guys a shrug that does imo work quite well, try single arm shrugs, you can use a dumbell, a barbell (suitcase hold), low cable attachment etc. Really shrug right up to almost your ears and try reps in the 20-100 range. Using this version I have on a number of occasions had horrendously sore traps the next day it is the one shrug I recommend if you do them.

    i can vouch for this information. the good news is that you can make insaaaaane progress in power shrugs, im talking about going from 3 plates to 7 plates in 2 months. and it isnt that dangerous because your torso is straight and as alex said the traps can handle insane weights.

    Fully agree. I have terrible shoulders, but my traps are actually not bad and that's without EVER doing any kind of shrugs. But I deadlift and perform weighted carries which put a ton a stress on the traps. Haven't thought of rack pulls above the knee, but it makes perfect sense. Very intelligent recommedation.

    He speaks sense recently started doing barbell shrugs with wraps lifting from above the knee and you can get the high volume but a he'll of a lot heavier than you thought . I was shrugging 35kg dumbels before using the barbell and wraps I'm doing sets with 180kg on and in recent months I see a big difference in trap size I also use the trap bar deadlift for a different hand position this again allows you to overload

      yeah, once you can powershrug 6+ plates for reps you´ll do plate jumps if not more. I usually do 60kg for 5-8, 120kg for 5-8, 180kg for 5-8 etc and the only break you take is putting on more weight. Takes 20 mins tops to complete a rackpull workout

  • @CLe-cr4zp
    @CLe-cr4zp 5 років тому

    I like how he talks fast and adds no BS nonsense on the side. Also no BS music's for 10 mins. Although doing power shrugs with heavy weight can cause injury easily on your spine as the momentum of the weight coming down can compress the spine.

    For someone with lower back problems, can I expect heavy rack pulls (above the knee) to be safe? I've got a bulging disk that makes certain exercises quite painful or even risky(deadlift for example) - even with proper form (put myself out for a week doing front squats with 135 lbs..... my 1 rep is like 400 lb). I'm all down for big traps/upper back, but I'm not down for blowing out my lower back to find out lol. Would you recommend the advice to someone in my position?

    Some good info there. Mostly regarding weight. Don't be a puss, you can shrug a lot so pile it on. If your grip or arms are failing you, use straps so you can really get the traps, especially on farmers walk. I can get about 50 ft. with 120's normal, with straps I can get about 400 ft. or a lap around my entire gym. Huge difference!

      People with lower back issues report that this exercise doesn't irritate their backs, due to the upright back angle at which you pull the weight. So try it and see what happens. Also perform sets of reverse hyperextensions and lat pull downs afterwards, to decompress and traction the spine.

    I'm currently focusing on shoulders and bodybuilding the arms, and everything upper body as I build up muscle fibers. This video is actually great advice, especially for getting your heavy weight workout done confidently. The 500 pound lift is the real deal and this method of exercising is doable, remember to muscle up the 100 pound dumbbell and walk around, It's true that once you establish your stance with these levels of extreme heavy weights you will become stronger at that weight level and eventually be capable of other exercises utilizing the 100 pound range and higher. My method is to establish the highest weight my body can handle and then using that power lift once through my bodybuilding session. It's after I've done that extreme heavy lifting that the weights 60 pounds and lighter actually lifted easily. Start out light to your maximum weight and then lift light weight again, remembering that It's nutrition and sleep that builds muscle and the up down weight method that burns into higher strength levels.

    • @xtraterastrielrede5513
      @xtraterastrielrede5513 5 років тому

      I'm a ARMY veteran and this is my best advice for Bodybuilding, it takes a full year or three to actually see those Arnold Schwarzenegger results though, if I was in person I would say only lift 200 pounds at maximum weight for safety reasons if really doing that cRaZy high intensity workout routine because It's a better muscle burn.
