Yoooo this is Alex from AlphaDestiny here with another full body workout. Today we’re starting with the rack pull above the knee working up to a max with the max effort method.
Had another content creator try to convince me that these didn't work the back. I guess that soreness and long term dense thickness from adding them in was just in my imagination!
woah woah woah, Rack Pulls? the nostalgia hits hard here. I've never had issues pulling from the floor, but I cannot wait to reintroduce the movement in September, good work Alex!
Stretched position on the traps has led to a lot of gains for me. Especially with farmer carries. But I definitely get some fatigue from the farmer carries. Thanks so much for the great content!
How's that working for you Tim? Threw my back on conventional twice this month and have considered dropping it in favor of RDL's which have always worked well for me and adding rack/block pulls.
Yo Alex I just wanna say you've helped me tremendously as a 15 year old, helping me with me gains and knowledge. I've now made a small home gym and am training 5 people, earning some good bucks. Thanks a ton my man Edit: They're also getting super strong using your knowledge
Wow!! 5 homies putting quality work in the home gym. That's what's up, I'm happy you're killing the strength gains. You will be so ahead of the average gymgoer with this hardcore atmosphere, imagine the long term potential bro.
love reflecting on your videos from years ago as now the “science” lifters finally pick up on the same stuff like the importance of heavy lengthened partials/stretch.
I really miss the old school bear mode videos. I still go back to watch those. Because of bear mode videos im currently 6'3 300lbs benching 4 plates for reps
I never went away from rack pulls at the knee or just above the knee. As a beginner, I built a good upper back and traps working between the 5-10 rep ranges. I kept doing them when everyone was off them because of SFR. I just liked them, and my upper back and traps are still one of my best body parts
Started believing in natty potential back in the days where rack pulls above the knee were the ultimate yoke meta you brought to us, time flies, can't thank you enough brother
Thank you for taking the time to put out excellent content. We know you could be doing a million more things with your time, but you choose to share your knowledge with us.
Rack pulls & RDL'S are my bread and butter for back thickness. Between those and power shrugs I don't have to do anything else for my back and it looks gifted.
Hello Alex, I started implementing almost every single thing that you talk about in your videos around the start of 2024 and my biggest weakpoint were my arms ever since I started my journey and thanks to only you and no one else today my biceps measured 42cm after a pull day (I'm 182cm 76kg) and I cant express how greatfull I am. Thank you so so much and keep up the good work man ❤
This video finally settles it for me. I’ve been considering having some of my coaching clients do more rack pulls and block pulls, especially beginners with big bellies and poor mobility who need to train the hip hinge. I still teach them to conventional from the floor, but you’re right- the conventional deadlift really is a dogma that we all just kinda settle with, often to the detriment of training the actual hip hinge. If raising the bar 2” actually teaches them to deadlift and gain the mobility to eventually pull heavy from the floor with good mechanics, hell yeah.
Totally unrelated, but I stopped deadlifting at 365lbs and just did RDLs for a year and went from a 135 for 10 to 225 for 10 on RDLs then tried deadlifting again and hit 430lb 1rm + 65lbs on my deadlift without deadlifting. Also i went back to do RDLs and am now repping 275lbs. The carry over between those two lifts is insane for me rn and am hoping it'll get me to a 500lb DL and 315 RDL in the future. Great video tho bro, definitely gonna use rack pulls at some point to help grow my DL and back musculature even more 💪
@hooktraining3966 definitely wanna try deficit DLs or RDLs at some point. Although my build is super leggy so i already have a big range of motion lol but yeah good shout mate 💪
I remember grabbing those bar pads that people use to hipthrust and placing them over the pins to stop that Metal on Metal Sound. Nice throwback to your earlier content.
I loved rack pulls. I wasn't strong enough to hoist them up with back power alone so i would almost slide my quads under the bar to get more assistance when lifting. I messed up my knees doing that. Sucks cause they were working. I was so sore the days after. Hopefully one day I can bring em back
Definitely feel like the stretched position with Rows and pull-ups has gotten me most of my back gains. I feel like using the contraction or top range to track whether or not I’m increasing strength is helpful but definitely not as important for muscular growth. And what I mean by that is basically whether or not I’m doing a full repetition. Otherwise, I feel like I can fall into a gray area with partial reps, which is harder for track progress for myself. Also, I tried behind the neck pull-ups based on your recent video about them. They definitely get the lats going ha ha.
Yeah, I was doing rows with 225, 102 kg, for 12. But it was garbage for gains because the ROM sucked. I found myself using 57 kg and making more gains. Currently on 68 for 13 underhand and probably some more overhand. I did 72 for 12 already in May, though the ROM did fall slightly short towards the end.
@@TheBcoolGuy I have actually really been liking double dumbbell rows. Because I feel like underhand rows and overhand rows both feel slightly off. Neutral grip feels perfect.
Thanks for this video Alex, strongly considering adding rack pulls to my routine!!! I have a long torso, long legs, short arms so I've been exclusively doing RDLs for quite some time, though I've been getting a little bored of them so this video came at the perfect time. 🤘
THEY'RE BAAAAACCCKKKK. I haven't done any rack pulls, but I've been doing cheat shrugs again for about the past 4 months. I got noticeable trap growth in a deficit (lost 15 lb), and have gotten sore every workout. I do them super heavy overload style, 95%+ of my deadlift 1RM for sets of 10-15. Maybe have to give some rack pulls a try again during my next training block, but for now I'm milking all the gains I can out of the shrugs.
@@AlexLeonidasyou know, right now I'm doing beltless RDLs followed by the cheat shrugs on a back/posterior chain day. I can just sub in below knee rack pulls for both movements which will save me some time and also some fatigue (even considering rack pulls can be systemically taxing, one exercise is better than two).
i quit deadlifting because i kept getting reoccurring back injuries pulling from the floor since i have pendlay-row leverages as well. i also realized i am a hypertrophy bro but i felt ive always been missing something in my back training since dropping deadlifts. Below the knee rack pulls are gonna be the move. Throws me back to good old rack pull days too haha.
Solid content. Agree that pretty much all deadlift variations are really taxing. Might as well use the most optimal variations for you. Hating on rack pulls is like hating on the smith machine.
this is an amazing video and i agree with a lot that you have said. You also mention that rack pulls are better because you can adjust the Range of motion depending on your anthropometry and your active hinging range. Which i agree with, however you don't mention that you can improve your active hinging range so that your active hinging range will be to the floor or even beyond. The same way how people with long arms can improve their mobility in their shoulders/chest to bench through a full range of motion.
LOOKING ABSOLUTELY YOKEDD!!. Btw I'd appreciate help on this, I won't be able to go to the gym for various reasons for a few months, I have access to a pullup bar and dip bar at home along with a few bands, it is possible for a novice (80kg squat, 60kgbench, 20kg chinup 1 rep max) to make comparable gains at home compared to the gym?
I love that you talk about this topic, like the old videos. Your quality now is impressive. By the way, can I ask you about your novice program? I'm following it and I'm wondering if when I feel a little sore I should go to the gym or leave it for when I'm recovered and if the lifts, regardless of whether they are paused or not, should be explosive (what does that mean? What would the tempo? go up fast and go down fast? Should I control the eccentricities?) Excuse me for these questions that may seem stupid. thank you and sorry for bad english.
